V letu spomina, ko mineva 80 let od konca druge svetovne vojne smo v oddaji Moja zgodba objavili nekaj pričevanj članov (VOS OF) Varnostno obveščevalne službe Osvobodilne Fronte. Za današnjo in dve naslednji oddaji smo tokrat izbrali pričevanje enega od »prvokategornikov« Franca Stadlerja Pepeta, ki je med drugim ustrelil Lamberta Erlicha in bana Marka Natlačena. Njegovo pričevanje v dveh delih je bilo posneto v letih 1978 in 1979. Dosegljivo v Arhivu Republike Slovenije. S komentarji bo tudi tokrat z nami znanstveni sodelavec Študijskega centra za narodno spravo dr. Damjan Hančič, ki je eden od vodilnih raziskovalcev revolucionarnega nasilja v Sloveniji.Pred časom smo objavili pričevanje narodnega heroja Eda Brajnika Štefana, ki je bil nekaj časa komandant varnostne službe. Bil je tudi vodja 1. odseka OZNE za Jugoslavijo in po koncu vojne je vrsto let delal v zvezni upravi za notranje zadeve v Beogradu. Zatem smo objavili pričevanje Lidije Dermastia kasneje poročene Kovič. Njen mož je bil Anton Kovič Sine, njen brat pa je bil komandant in vodja VOS Marjan Dermastia Urban, imenovan tudi Urban Velikonja. Življenjepis iz slovenske biografije:Stadler Franc - Pepe, narodni heroj rojen 30. maja 1915 v Šiški v Ljubljani. Tu je končal osnovno šolo, 4 razrede gimnazije in dvorazredno trgovsko šolo. L. 1937–38 je služil vojaški rok, nato je dobil zaposlitev pri Poštni hranilnici v Ljubljani, kjer je služboval do odhoda v partizane 25. junija 1943. Politično se je udejstvoval v delavskem kulturnem društvu Svoboda, 1935 postal član telovadnega društva Sokol. Spomladi 1941 se je priključil narodnoosvobodilnemu gibanju. Konec aprila 1941 je postal kandidat KPS, avgusta sekretar terenskega odbora OF v Šiški, jeseni kvartnega odbora OF II. Spodnja Šiška. Oktobra 1941 je postal član VOS v Ljubljani, novembra je bil sprejet v KPS in bil sekretar terenske celice KPS v Šiški, marca 1942 komandir skupine VOS v Ljubljani, maja 1942 komandant VOS za mesto Ljubljana, novembra 1942 pa Narodne zaščite za mesto Ljubljana. 25. jun. 1943 se je priključil Cankarjevi brigadi, kjer je bil namestnik komandanta III. bataljona in bil 11. julija 1943 ranjen pri Semiču. Zdravil se je v partizanski bolnišnici do septembra 1943. Zatem je postal inštruktor VOS v grosupeljskem in stiškem okrožju. 16. februarja 1944 je postal namestnik komandanta slovenske divizije vojske državne varnosti (VDV). Maja 1944 so ga poslali na Štajersko, kjer je reorganiziral VOS, ustanovil III. brigado vojske državne varnosti ter sodeloval pri osvoboditvi Zgornje Savinjske doline. Novembra 1944 so ga dodelili k OZNA za Slovenijo, kjer je ostal do 2. maja 1945. Od 2. do 30. maja 1945 je bil upravnik specialnega sektorja OZNE v Trstu, od začetka junija 1945 do 27. februarja 1958 pa je bil šef oddelka OZNA za Slovenijo. Bilj je načelnik oddelka pri republiškem sekretariatu za notranje zadeve SRS in prejemnik mnogih visokih vojaških in političnih odlikovanj ter Partizanske spomenico 1941; z redom narodnega heroja je bil odlikovan jul. 1952.

Additionally, Victor served 20 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence and targeting officer, retiring in 2013 as a Commander. In 2017, Victor completed the “Explorer's Grand Slam” which requires climbing the highest peak on all seven of the world's continents including Mt. Everest and skiing at least 100 kilometers to the North and South Poles. He piloted the first repeated dives to the ocean's deepest point, Challenger Deep, in the Pacific's Mariana Trench - now fifteen times, and in August 2019 became the first person to visit “The Five Deeps,” the deepest point in all five of the world's oceans. Victor has now personally explored the bottom of seventeen deep ocean trenches and has made three dives to the Titanic including the only solo dive ever made there. In 2025, the US Navy announced that T-AGOS 26, a new ocean surveillance vessel of the Explorer class, would be named after him. Pete Scobell is a former U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant with 17 years of service, including six combat deployments, best known as the real-life member of the SEAL team that rescued Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009, inspiring the film Captain Phillips. Scobell served in the United States Navy as both an enlisted and officer in the SEAL Teams. For decades, rural Oregon counties that contain large swaths of federally owned forest land have depended on a share of timber revenues from federal logging to fund schools, law enforcement and other essential public services. These payments were originally meant to offset the loss of property tax revenue that counties could not collect on federal lands. But when logging on these lands slowed drastically in the 1990s due to new environmental protections — like the Endangered Species Act — those payments plummeted.    In response, Congress stepped in with a temporary fix: the Secure Rural Schools Program. First passed in 2000, Congress reauthorized it multiple times over the years until it allowed it to expire in 2023. Congress which it enacted in 2000 and reauthorized multiple times until it expired in 2023. The lapse in the SRS reauthorization has triggered the default distribution of the significantly reduced timber revenue to counties.    The federal budget process has introduced new complications as well. President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law in July, requires federal agencies to ramp up logging. But it also includes a provision redirecting all proceeds from timber sales on lands in counties to the federal government — threatening one of the last fiscal lifelines for rural governments to fund its core services.   With counties facing budgeting shortfalls that carry big consequences, questions about how to create a long-term sustainable path forward have taken on new urgency. Lane County Commissioner Heather Buch and Klamath County Commissioner Derrick DeGroot — whose counties receive the second- and third-highest federal payments in Oregon after Douglas County — join us, along with Mark Haggerty, a senior fellow at the liberal-leaning thinktank Center for American Progress to talk about the challenges Oregon’s rural counties face and what a stable funding model for these counties might look like.   Curry County Commissioner Jay Trost declined to participate in the conversation but provided OPB with a statement:  Curry County has the second lowest property tax rate in Oregon at .59 per thousand of assessed value and like most Oregon Counties, we have not been able to keep up with the inflation over the past 4 years.  We had to endure a 31% reduction in the county budget for the 24/25 fiscal year, we were able to maintain that with no further budget reductions in the 25/26 budget because of timber revenues that came in and covered the annual employee role up costs.  These O&C timber funds allowed us to remain fairly status quo in terms of service delivery.  Going forward if those funds are not made available to us, we will most likely see more reductions in county services.  We are working diligently to think outside the box, identify alternative solutions that will maximize each dollar and become more efficient. These efforts will help and are necessary, however the reality remains the same, if we don’t receive timber revenues, and or PILT (payment in lieu of taxes)  payments we will have to make cuts.  We remain confident that the federal legislature will correct the language needed to ensure that counties like ours that rely on natural resources revenue will not be negatively impacted.

Max talks with Tom Turner, Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation, about an extraordinary initiative to preserve the operational future of the iconic V-tail Bonanza aircraft. When Textron Aviation quietly stopped producing the magnesium ruddervator skins—a unique flight control surface used only on V-tail Bonanzas—it left over 5,000 aircraft potentially grounded due to a lack of repair parts. Even minor damage could make these aircraft unrepairable. To solve this crisis, the ABS Air Safety Foundation awarded the $500,000 Maciel Ruddervator Prize to SRS Aviation of Minnesota. Tom explains the history and challenges behind the ruddervator issue: the original parts were made from a now-obsolete thickness of magnesium, which is no longer commonly produced. Even worse, the chemical process used to harden the magnesium is so caustic and environmentally hazardous that almost no facility could perform it anymore. SRS Aviation, already experienced in building replacement aluminum control surfaces, initially declined to compete. But after realizing no one else was pursuing a solution, they took on the challenge, developing their own safe and FAA-acceptable hardening process. They eventually met the prize's requirements, which included certifying replacement skins for all three ruddervator design variants and producing at least 100 completed kits to prove production viability. Tom also discusses the origin of the prize money: a generous bequest from Manny Maciel, a quiet aircraft fueler in Santa Rosa, California, who left $5 million to aviation safety research. The ABS Air Safety Foundation received $1 million of this funding, which it used to underwrite the prize. Tom emphasizes that the Foundation structured the award not just to incentivize a solution, but to ensure long-term support for V-tail Bonanza owners. The story also touches on how the ruddervator issue impacted aircraft valuations and even insurance policies—some insurers were unwilling to total aircraft with ruddervator damage, knowing repairs were impossible. Tom notes that after the prize was announced, Textron resumed limited production of the original ruddervator skins, showing how serious ABS was about finding a solution. Max wraps up by asking what other challenges might face Bonanza owners. Tom replies that while issues will always arise, most are solvable. John Stryker Meyer is a decorated Green Beret who served two tours in Vietnam (1968-1969 and 1969-1970) with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group(MACV-SOG). Enlisting in 1966, he earned his Special Forces tab in 1967 and joined Spike Team Idaho, later leading Recon Team Idaho at Command and Control North (CCN) in Da Nang. Meyer's missions took him across borders into denied areas, facing intense combat—including surviving multiple gunshot wounds and leading his team through impossible odds.
