Let's talk about the wimpification of the American sportsman and how this phenomenon is evident throughout society today. It makes me crazy.  In 2015 Ruben Tejada of the New York Mets turned a lazy double play and had his leg broken by the Los Angeles Dodgers' Chase Utley. Instead of focusing on Tejada's poor fundamentals, they just changed the rule so you can't run into the fielder and worse yet, they called it the Chase Utley rule.  Chase did what he was supposed to do properly.  Tejada didn't!   In football you can't even tackle the quarterback anymore or knock a kick returner out of bounds.  The war of attrition was and still should be an important part of competition.  How does this wimping out in sports translate to society today?  I have my opinion on today's podcast.

8-1-2020 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this version of the program by bringing up Joe Kelly’s decision to police the Houston Astros cheating scandal by throwing at Alex Bregman. John has made it clear that he has no problem with players policing the sport. It has been part of the game for years. When MLB did very little to Chase Utley for hurting Mets infielder Ruben Tejada in a playoff game in 2015, Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard took matters in his own hands. While John has no problem with that, nor Kelly’s actions by themselves, he has an issue with the timing. MLB has put health and safety protocols in place with the intention of preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Part of it involves the avoidance of any team to team altercations. Kelly could have waited until the virus boils over or until next season to the season after. He was selfish to allow his agenda to override the need to be safe. A team (the Miami Marlins) is on the verge of losing their season and this guy wants to be the poster child for revenge on the Astros. Time and place. John then talks about how the use of starting pitchers may completely change the game forever. It has already cause the need for 12-14 pitchers on a staff and the universal designated hitter. It may very well be responsible for the change of the game length from nine to seven innings. Contemporary starting pitchers are ruining the game of baseball. Finally, John has a message for Mets General Manager Brodie VanWagenen- Stop trying to justify the trade for Edwin Diaz and put the best players in position to compete for a playoff spot. Diaz is not good, he is a bad pitcher. And it has nothing to do with the “bright lights of New York City.”

Jake Donnelly (AKA "Bagoon"), intros the latest episode with a quick analysis of the Boston Celtics draft (it was good) before hitting the Topic of the Day (Start-1:30). The Topic of the Day is the Breakup Slide and how it is on its deathbed, if not already dead (1:30-2:33). He first breaks down the Breakup Slide (2:34-3:25) and why it is so important (3:26-4:07). The takeoff point for the article is the Chase Utley slide and him breaking Ruben Tejada's leg (4:08-5:32) versus what is now a legal breakup slide (5:33-8:19). The problem though is the Breakup Slide is now dead; when a player like Xander Bogarts perfectly executes a Breakup Slide and it is still ruled interference EVEN AFTER REVIEW, there is nowhere to go from there (8:20-16:31). The worst part about the overregulation is that baseball plays are now being eradicated and cool moments are being stripped from the game (16:31-17:34). One of the biggest issues is that it gives runners two options; hurt the infielder because you will get called for interference (17:35-18:44) or make no attempt to help your team (18:45-19:17). Another issue is the proliferation of shifts, and how the shifting actually makes plays at second more dangerous for infielders (19:18-21:20). Jake wraps up his rant by explaining why baseball is really dying (21:21-25:20) and then finishes up the episode with some quick Red Sox talk (25:21-End)
