Welcome back for episode two of MetsMerized's new podcast, Pleasant Good Evening! This week, myself (@SamLebo14) and Jack (jackhendon_) break down a very long and busy week of Mets baseball. We discuss the social undercurrent of the week, surrounding Dom Smith and the Mets' walk-out of Thursday's game against the Marlins. We also discuss exactly how the Mets did in their eight games this week, down the most frustrating detail. How did the pitching hold up? How about the catching? Jack and I also talk about today's trade deadline and what we think the Mets will do with a much clearer picture of where the team sits since last week. To round out the episode, we discuss the (likely) new team owner and what his first order of business should be. We also reminisce about Addison Reed's amazing 2016 and, as usual, remember some random Mets! Stick around to the end of the episode to see which random Mets we remember. In June of 2011 the Atlanta Braves selected Ryne Harper in 37th-round. On February 2, 2018, Harper signed a minor-league contract with the Minnesota Twins. We have all heard the saying “a cup of coffee in the big leagues”. Ryne Harper, literally, had a cup of coffee in the big leagues with the Seattle Mariners. He was called up for three days and didn’t throw one pitch in a game before he was sent back down. In 2019, Harper was given a non-roster invitation to major-league spring training. On March 27th, 2019 Ryne Harper was told that he would be on the Twins' Opening Day roster. To say Harper kept a fairly low profile going into camp is an understatement. If you googled his name in March, a 25-year-old Indy leaguer who posted a 7.88 ERA in 2017 with Garden City comes up first. Harper's odds of making the team as a non-roster invitee where slim to none. He had to earn a spot and his competition was..... Trevor May – big-leaguer, and out of options Addison Reed – multi-year deal Trevor Hildenberger – big-leaguer Taylor Rogers – the team’s most valuable reliever in 2018 Matt Magill – out of options Fernando Romero – high ceiling Adalberto Mejia - No. 5 starter Martin Perez – out of options Blake Parker – legit big leaguer He earned as spot! On the latest episode of the Stokke On Podcast, FanRag Sports MLB insider Jon Heyman joins to discuss his latest Inside Baseball column. This week's column was a reaction to the MLB trade deadline, including winners, non-winners and one loser. Before Jon joins, the episode opens with thoughts on my latest column regarding the Milwaukee Brewers and why they should look to acquire Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander. It would take the Tigers being realistic about what they can get for Verlander, and it would take Verlander approving the deal because of his 10-and-5 rights, but it's a deal that makes a lot of sense for both sides. Jon joins the episode, along with co-host Chris Schubert, to discuss who he thinks will be the biggest difference maker from those acquired at or near the deadline. Is it Sonny Gray with the New York Yankees? Perhaps Yu Darvish with the Los Angeles Dodgers? What about the Chicago Cubs and Jose Quintana and Justin Wilson? The conversation shifts to the only loser on Jon's list, the Houston Astros. What was the biggest mistake they made in not acquiring Zach Britton or anyone else? Are they being smart in waiting for the right opportunity or just hoarding prospects? The Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox, along with the Washington Nationals, also had a very good deadline, according to Heyman. Is he ready to say the White Sox have a better farm system than the Atlanta Braves? The Boston Red Sox acquired Addison Reed, but did they make a mistake in not getting a starting pitcher? What's next for the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants? Giants fans probably won't like the answer. Finally, the show ends discussing the teams in the middle, including the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles, along with Heyman's take on what happens with Verlander and the Tigers.

The Stokke On Podcast returns after a too-long hiatus and introduces new co-host Chris Schubert, who is the host of FanRag Sports Radio in Phoenix. The opening take is on the Houston Astros and their relative inactivity around the trade deadline. They acquired starter-now-reliever Francisco Liriano from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Nori Aoki and Teoscar Hernandez. They didn't get a starter pitcher. They didn't get a bigger name in the bullpen. Should they have? The conversation breaks into a bit of a comparison of the Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers in terms of championship windows and where each team stands. Speaking of the Dodgers, they made a big move in acquiring starting pitcher Yu Darvish from the Texas Rangers. What does this mean for Los Angeles moving forward? No, they aren't guaranteed a title. But how do they stack up against the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals in the National League? Those are the three top dogs in the NL, but are the Arizona Diamondbacks or Colorado Rockies built to challenge them in the postseason? Get ready for the D-backs to be everyone's "surprise" team. In the American League, the New York Yankees traded for Sonny Gray, while everyone else stood pat for the most part. Did the Red Sox make a mistake by not acquiring a starting pitcher or was trading for Addison Reed enough? What about the Cleveland Indians? They acquired Joe Smith, but did they need to make a move to bring in a starting pitcher, such as Darvish? The show wraps up with rapid fire on teams that stood mostly pat, not buying or selling: Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

Brian does not apologize for pulling a Chris Sale and earning his one week suspension. Then the two figured out if it's better to be the best player on a World Series winning team or to be a Hall of Famer with no rings. Then they went into whom the Mets should acquire before the upcoming trade deadline, and specifically discussed if Jonathon Lucroy wanting "peace and quiet" means anything. Then Brian talked about Jeurys Familia's saves streak that Roger jinxed, before Roger revealed Addison Reed is more awesome than you already thought. Michael Conforto doesn't suck in center field, and you better believe that was discussed too. Roger was forced to elaborate on Bud Harrelson's love making after the debut of a new award. Finally, a peak in the mailbag led Roger and Brian to ask the eternal question: WHY?

This week: - The double A Binghamton Mets considering changing their nickname to, among other monikers, the Stud Muffins; Roger explains why it's the perfect choice - Was the Citi Field reception to Daniel Murphy's return what we expected? And do we regret swapping out Ol' Murph for Neil Walker yet? - Addison Reed is doing well by just throwing fastballs, and Brian gets exasperated trying to figure out how. - The boys feel bad for Carlos Torres, whose name is getting dragged in the mud thanks to the deaf, dumb, and blind home plate umpire with the same name that won an essay contest we guess and screwed the Mets over the weekend. - In the mailbag, Roger and Brian explain why it seems like our pitching staff isn't great even though they're 1st in WAR, and figure out if they would rather manage the Atlanta Braves or get shot out of a cannon. -After the credits, there's a special surprise. It's like a Marvel comic movie, except in this case you lose a lot of respect for Addison Reed's taste in music.

So Corey Kluber might be good. We chat about his game for a moment and then discuss his place among the pantheon of other elite pitchers. This leads into some concerns we have about David Price. We discuss some potential fantasy trades with him and what we think of his value. Continuing a pitcher discussion, we move to a former 2020 All-Star favorite, Yordano Ventura. Is he better than some “Whack or Back”-type guys? The Closerpocalypse is upon us. Neftali Feliz looks like he is out. Shawn Tolleson seems to be the man and the guys behind the guy is Tanner Scheppers and Keone Kela. The other guys that we are worried about are the Axman and Addison Reed. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex previews the NL West with Eric Stephen, the managing editor for the True Blue LA Dodgers blog on SB Nation. Alex and Eric talk about the Dodgers heading into the season, and if they have the best 40-man roster in the league. They also talk about whether the Dodgers are the most enviable organization in Major League Baseball due to their seemingly unlimited financial resources, and how Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett have been perceived in Los Angeles. The Giants feature virtually the same core that captured the championship in 2012, even though they won 76 games in 2013. Alex and Eric attempt to prognosticate the Giants season, and whether they'll be closer to where they were in 2012 or 2013. The Diamondbacks are coming off a .500 campaign, and acquired slugger Mark Trumbo and closer Addison Reed over the offseason. Did they improve enough to make a run at the division title, or does their roster still fall short? Though it's unlikely that the Padres or Rockies will win the NL West in 2014, both clubs have the potential to be competitive if all breaks right. The Red Sox signed David Ortiz to a one-year, $16 million contract extension with vesting options for 2016 and 2017 Sunday even though they didn't have to. This decision makes little baseball sense, and it appears it was made for public relations purposes. The Red Sox have set a potentially dangerous precedent with the decision to reward Ortiz with an extension for complaining about his deal all spring long. John Farrell has strongly implied that Grady Sizemore will begin the year as the club's starting center fielder, which should've been evident when he was signed in January. If Sizemore was healthy at the end of Spring Training, the plan was probably always to have him begin the season in the Major Leagues while Jackie Bradley receives more tutelage in Triple-A. The Boston Globe published a terrific, but disturbing investigative piece about Jared Remy's extensive criminal history in Sunday's paper. Though Alex previously believed Jerry Remy should stay on Red Sox telecasts despite his son's upcoming murder trial, the revelations outlined in the article may be too much for him to bear. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex rants against MLB's seemingly asinine decision to begin the regular season overseas in the wee hours of the morning Saturday. A few more Australian kids may have signed up for little league, but millions of fans were unable to watch the first game of the season because it aired at 4:00 a.m.! A new potential destination for Stephen Drew, top prospect George Springer's possible lawsuit against the Astros for sending him to minor league camp and more is touched upon as well. Email Alex at ajreimer0@gmail.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Alex will be a regular fixture on "The Big Show Unfiltered," as he'll appear every Friday at 4:00 p.m. for the next several weeks. Opening Day is next Monday! We've almost made it through another long, harsh winter, baseball fans.
