Find Paddy on Instagram & the Toughness Podcast here. His Book will be out March of 2027! Quick recap The Elevate Podcast featured Paddy Steinfurt, a performance and pressure coach, discussing his transition from professional Australian football to working with elite athletes and professionals across various high-pressure fields. Paddy explained the physiological effects of pressure, focusing on hormones like cortisol, dopamine, and serotonin, and how they impact performance. He shared insights into the challenges of applying positive psychology in high-performance environments, highlighting the importance of balancing optimism with reality. Paddy recounted stories from his work with athletes like DeMarco Murray and Patrick Mahomes, emphasizing the role of trust, consistency, and character in coaching. He also discussed practical techniques for managing focus and stress, such as attention training, and shared personal travel hacks for maintaining performance. The conversation concluded with Paddy reflecting on what brings him joy in his work, which is the gratitude and positive impact he sees in those he helps. Summary AFL Player to Performance Coach Tyler interviewed Paddy Steinfurt for the Elevate Podcast, discussing Paddy's background transitioning from professional Australian Football League (AFL) player to a performance coach working with high-level athletes across multiple sports including MLB, NBA, NFL, and FIFA World Cups. Paddy explained his journey from a seven-year professional career that ended due to surgeries to pursuing a Master's in Positive Psychology at University of Pennsylvania, which led to his current work as a "pressure coach" helping athletes and professionals manage performance-related stress. The conversation began to explore Paddy's 2015 article "The Inner Game" about balancing mental health and high performance in sports, though the transcript ended before this topic was fully discussed. Mental Health in Sports Discussion Paddy discussed the complexities of mental health in sports, noting that while there is increased awareness and discussion about mental wellness, there is a risk of over-sensitization that can prevent appropriate intervention. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between performance frustration and actual mental health conditions, sharing his approach from previous roles with the Philadelphia Eagles and Toronto Blue Jays where he focused on covering all aspects of performance while being careful not to mix mental health issues with performance concerns. The conversation ended as Tyler began asking about hormones related to high performance, but the transcript ended before Paddy could respond to this question. Cortisol and Pressure Hormonal Effects Paddy explained how cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone, plays a significant role under pressure rather than during general stress. He described how cortisol can lead to increased levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, affecting decision-making and emotional responses under pressure. Paddy also mentioned that this hormonal imbalance can cause difficulties in focusing and making balanced decisions. Stress and Mental Health Effects Paddy discussed the potential negative effects of sustained high-stress environments on mental health, explaining how it can lead to depletion of serotonin and link to conditions like burnout and post-traumatic stress. He shared an anecdote about implementing positive psychology techniques with an NFL team, specifically mentioning an interaction with player DeMarco Murray who approached thinking differently about stress and recovery. Paddy observed that high-performing individuals sometimes resist positive psychology practices because they know that feeling good all the time is not always necessary for peak performance. High-Performance Psychology Approach Paddy discussed his approach to working with high-performance individuals, noting that the best operators often reject traditional positive psychology techniques because they focus on immediate task execution rather than emotional management. He explained the need for a balanced approach that combines both emotional handling and optimism, which he terms "3D thinking" using both "rose colored glasses" and a "blue lens" perspective. Paddy emphasized the importance of psychological safety and team connection in high-performance environments, suggesting that support and compassion from teammates can enhance willpower and help athletes maintain focus on their goals rather than just personal comfort. Building Trust with Athletes Paddy and Tyler discussed the importance of building trust with athletes, with Paddy explaining that trust is built on three C's: character, competence, and consistency. Paddy shared a story about Patrick Mahomes from his college years, highlighting Mahomes' reliability, openness, and willingness to engage in challenging exercises as key qualities that made him stand out among other athletes. Sports Psychology and Performance Techniques Paddy discussed his work in sports psychology, sharing insights about attention training techniques and how he helped athletes like Patrick Mahomes and TJ McConnell manage their mental focus. He explained his travel hacks for managing jet lag, including proper pillow management, exercise, and careful substance management. When asked about what brings him joy in his work, Paddy emphasized the satisfaction of helping people improve and receiving their gratitude, citing examples from his time as a physical therapist and coach.

The guys jump right into the news that DeMarco Murray was a candidate for the Penn State running backs coach job, but will stay at OU after all. Lock in for another DeMarco Murray/OU running backs discussion (1:30). Lee did not quite realize how lowly ranked OU's 2025 signing class is. This takes us on a journey of OU's previous recruiting classes. The 2017 class was incredible (28:05). Over to the John Mateer/Ben Arbuckle 2024 watch as Washington State won a 54-52 2OT shootout against San Jose State. Mateer and Arbuckle continued to show a lot of promise, while Mateer also provided two massive lowlights. Through 4 games we are still very much pleased about what we've seen from both Mateer and Arbuckle (41:20). Jalen Hurts and the Eagles dominated the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, it was a very poor game (1:14:00). Grant opens the show by reminding everybody that DeMarco Murray and Joe Jon Finley continue to be on staff and presents a new conspiracy theory. We transition smoothly to OU bringing on Nate Dreiling and Wes Goodwin to coach linebackers. Brent Venables also announced that he will be calling plays in 2025 (7:45). Ben Arbuckle is going to make $1.5M per year (25:05). Thoughts on John Mateer and Ben Arbuckle in Washington State's win in Week 3 over Washington. There's a lot of good with this duo through three games (28:10). Brian Hartline is going to be the next OC at Ohio State. Grant really likes this guy (1:04:45). Grant opens the show with some recent news that required a visit to urgent care. We get past that to get to the great news that R Mason Thomas is coming back and FSU transfer Marvin Jones Jr. will join him on the defensive line (3:20) OSU transfer Kendal Daniels is joining the roster as well. What will be his role? Grant seems to think he could play more linebacker than DB (11:20). Lee saw a tweet that caught his eye that leads to a major hypothetical situation that involves OU's defensive coordinator opening (19:15). Joe Jon Finley and DeMarco Murray continue to be on staff. Is it possible Ben Arbuckle can improve the offensive staff as a whole (27:00)? We answer a listener question about the types of players OU has gotten out of the transfer portal so far. Brent Venables' formula for 2025 is looking more and more clear (34:20). We wrap it up with our final thoughts on the CFP semifinals and how the first year of the 12-team playoff has not been as fun as we had hoped (43:40). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets
Grant is back from Rome. Deion Burks is returning to OU. Grant is hoping OU is not breaking the bank for him. Lee struggles to care about all the money stuff (2:30). BREAKING: John Mateer commits to OU in the middle of the pod. Will/can OU now go get a top tier WR out of the portal? The tight end room looks to be a mess and an unknown (13:10). Is OU bargain shopping in the portal? Will Joe Jon Finley and DeMarco Murray be on staff after the bowl game (33:25)? OU got commitments from a tackle from Stanford and a punter from Kennesaw State. Grant goes over some defensive targets for OU (41:45). What's going to happen with Damonic Williams (46:50)? Jackson Arnold is off to Auburn and LSU is taking two of OU's offensive players. Kalib Hicks will look to get some playing time at OSU and Makari Vickers is off to Colorado (55:15). Alex Grinch is the new DC at UCF and Bill Belichick is going to be a head coach in college football (1:03:30). We make our Playoff picks against the spread and randomly also pick the Hawaii Bowl (1:11:20). Grant predicted almost exactly how the 2024 season would play out (1:26:00). Brent Venables opens the show with his story of late night Taco Bell following the win over Alabama. The guys are incredibly excited about this development and go into detail about why (00:00). Venables admitted he failed on the Seth Littrell hire. Does this do anything for you? Did the Alabama game show us what OU could have been this season with a competent offense (10:10)? Venables joked about DeMarco Murray finally letting Xavier Robinson play more. We don't think this is a laughing matter (20:35). We look at the improvement in OU's rush offense in the four games since Joe Jon Finley has been calling plays (27:00). Doesn't sound like Deion Burks or Jalil Farooq will be available this week (33:05). We preview the LSU game with all of the most interesting aspects of this matchup. LSU's pass offense is elite. Can OU's DBs cover? LSU's defense is not good. Can OU's offense replicate the success they had against Alabama? Venables has a chance to prove the Bama game was not a fluke (36:45). Brief thoughts on the SEC slate, followed by our weekly picks. Games include Memphis-Tulane/South Carolina-Clemson/Notre Dame-USC/Miami-Syracuse/Texas-Texas A&M (59:10). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets
