Brad Evans and Pat Boyle welcome in Rob Dauster of the Field of 68 to break down the opening weekend of tournament action and what to expect in the second second and beyond, including if the tournament is becoming more chalky, why the Big Ten should be celebrating National Championships and not second weekend appearances, is St. John's a legitimate threat to beat Duke, why UConn matches up well with Michigan State, does Illinois have a matchup advantage over Houston, and more! Then, a deep dive into the National League Central division, discussing why it is foolish to count out the Brewers even after a handful of key losses, what is the Cubs biggest concern, can the Reds continue to build on last season's playoff birth, the Pirates being contenders to overachieve, and the Cardinals being the worst team in the division by a country mile. The hour wraps with a game of Start-Sit-Cut choosing what to do with Acuff-Peterson-Boozer, a coaching edition featuring Izzo-Hurley-Lloyd, and NL Central Center Fielders in Crow-Armstrong, Chorupio, and Cruz.
In Episode 528, Patrick, Jeffrey and Craig chat about the WBC, and then preview the National League Central 1. The Cubs are the most solid-average watchable team of all2. Welcome to Episode 155 of Tablesetters, where we continue our division preview series by turning to the National League Central heading into the 2026 season. The NL Central enters the year without a clear dominant team, making it one of the most unpredictable races in baseball. Several clubs have a realistic path to the top depending on health, pitching stability, and whether their young talent continues to develop. Chicago may have the most balanced roster after a strong 2025 season, but early rotation questions could shape how quickly they establish control of the division. Milwaukee continues to lean on its familiar formula of pitching development and athletic defense while building around a young star beginning to anchor the roster. Cincinnati brings one of the most dynamic young cores in the league, combining elite athleticism with a rotation that could be dangerous if it stays healthy. St. Louis is shifting toward its next generation of talent with several young players beginning to take on larger roles, while Pittsburgh continues building around a rapidly emerging ace as the organization works to improve an offense that has struggled to keep pace. In a division where no team appears overwhelmingly ahead of the pack, the margin between contender and disappointment could be small, making the NL Central one of the most intriguing races to watch this season.

Our MLB Preview Series rolls along on the Jack Vita Show, as MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis joins the program to break down the National League Central division! Originally taped on Wednesday, March 20, before Opening Day, Jim and Jack put the NL Central under the microscope, leading off with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs impressed in 2023, compiling 83 wins and missing the playoffs by only a game. Over the winter, the club parted ways with manager and 2016 World Series hero David Ross, replacing him with Craig Counsell. Counsell signed the richest contract for a manager in baseball history. The Cubs also re-signed Cody Bellinger, added Japanese star pitcher Shota Imanaga, and traded for Los Angeles Dodgers top corner infield prospect Michael Busch. The Cubs have the second-best farm system entering the 2024 season, according to MLB Pipeline. The club hopes that its young players can continue to take steps forward and under a new manager, it will return to the postseason for the first time in a full, 162-game season since 2018. What is the outlook for the Cubs in 2024, and why is Jim so bullish on them? Despite finishing in last place a season ago, the St. Louis Cardinals enter 2024 as favorites to win the NL Central. The club boasts of the highest over/under win total in most sportsbooks. Will the Cardinals jump from worst to first in 2024 and return to the top of the division? The Milwaukee Brewers enter the season with the fourth-highest odds to win the division. Despite losing manager Craig Counsell and starting pitchers Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff, Milwaukee could have its best lineup of position players that it has had in years. The Brewers have reached the postseason in five of their last six seasons, winning the division three times during that stretch. Are they being slept on? The Cincinnati Reds are the trendy pick in the NL Central. Will their young team exceed expectations? Through the first month of the 2023 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates had the best record in the National League. The club ended up winning 76 games. Can the Pirates win the division in 2024? Jim and Jack discuss how difficult the Central division is to forecast. There isn't a clear runaway favorite, but one could make a case for any of the five teams to finish atop the division. Jim also highlights the best prospects in the division, detailing which players fans should keep an eye that could potentially make a big impact at the Major League level in 2024. Jim and Jack provide detailed outlooks and over/under win total projections for each team! Chicago Cubs (0:00 - 14:25) St. Louis Cardinals (14:25 - 20:40) Milwaukee Brewers (20:40 - 29:30) Cincinnati Reds (29:30 - 39:20) Pittsburgh Pirates (39:20 - END) You can follow Jim on Twitter (@jimcallisMLB) and catch all of his prospect analysis at MLB Pipeline!

As we get closer to the start of the season for every team not named the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, the Baseball Bar-B-Cast guys take their 2024 division preview series to the NL Central. There isn't necessarily a clear-cut favorite to take the crown this year and perhaps a shift could be happening after multiple offseason moves. One of the biggest changes in the division is former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell taking his talents to the Chicago Cubs. Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman wonder if that move is big enough to give the Cubbies a slight advantage over the St. Louis Cardinals, who are coming off of an embarrassing 2023 season. However, there is reason to believe that maybe the Cincinnati Reds and their slew of sophomore stars can find a way to take the next step and compete for the crown in the central. Also in the division, the Pittsburgh Pirates are excited to get back Oneil Cruz after missing the majority of 2023, with hopes that he can become a core player that they can lean on moving forward. The guys also discuss the first game of the 2024 MLB season in Seoul, the San Francisco Giants signing Blake Snell & the drama unfolding with the MLB Players Association. 1:54 Dodgers-Padres opener8:12 Giants sign Blake Snell11:40 MLBPA drama13:26 Pittsburgh Pirates21:57 Milwaukee Brewers34:17 Cincinatti Reds47:43 Chicago Cubs59:45 St. Louis Cardinals1:15:27 Baseball Bar-B-Cast fantasy league[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for the 2024 MLB season]Follow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
