Minor Threat. Bad Brains. Dag Nasty. Fugazi. Dischord Records. DC punk & hardcore. Incredible music, incredible stories, incredible history & it's all captured in an incredible documentary called "Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-1990)". Written & directed by Scott Crawford, "Salad Days" received critical praise from the NY Times, Washington Post, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, MTV, and sold out theater screenings all over the world. The film examines the early DIY punk scene in the Nation’s Capital. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows—without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. And I got Scott Crawford on the horn to talk to me about it all. Beyond honored to get to interview someone who was a part of something that was so special to me and has influenced my ethos and style of comedy/living. Very very cool & I hope ya'll like it. http://www.ianfidance.com for dates to see me live @ianimal on instagram - DM me to ask questions or lemme know what ya think @IANfidance on twitter - same thing ianfidanceswildworld@gmail.com to email me http://www.saladdays.com for info about Scott's documentary https://www.amazon.com/Spoke-Images-Stories-1980s-Washington/dp/1617755001 - to purchase his new book about DC hardcore called "Spoke" thanks for listenin! xo, IAN

Ever go to a restaurant and there’s actually a fly in your soup? And you want to say something, but you feel like a punk for even bothering to raise your voice? Welcome to The Citizen’s world. He couldn’t be a punk if he tried. It’s that Jewish guilt. But Scott Crawford knows real punks. And he knows real punk musicians. He’s hung around and worked in the Washington, D.C. punk scene since he was a kid. His tour de force documentary, “Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90),” about the local D.C./suburban Maryland independent music scene, garnered rave reviews and a popular following. Scott has turned the work and photos from that project into an exciting and thoroughly researched new book, “Spoke: Images and Stories from the 1980s Washington, DC Punk Scene.” In this episode of “I Am Citizen Abels,” entitled, “A Punk In My Soup," recorded January 11, 2017, The Citizen and Crawford discuss everything on this episode – from kids and rock guitar to white angst, divorce angst, and the American Dream gone south. So listen up, turn it up, and bang your head against the wall, because only The Citizen is listening to you. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Mark Andersen of Positive Force DC, We Are Family, and the books Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital (co-authored with Mark Jenkins) and All the Power: Revolution Without Illusion. On the thirtieth anniversary of Washington, DC’s “Revolution Summer,” I wanted to celebrate and illuminate the event that sent reverberations out into the world that continue to resonate today. While Mark has nothing to do with the Philly punk scene this project focuses on, he’s like some other interview subjects (e.g. Martin Sprouse) whom I’ve elected to interview for being so influential on all punk scenes, including the Philly scene. Mark Andersen grew up on his parents’ farm in Montana. He never fit in there and was looking for something else, something to draw him away from the sad cycles of addiction and conformity he saw all around him. Mark’s salvation came in the form of the nascent punk scene. A few years later, Mark found himself in Washington, DC where harDCore reigned supreme and the scene was eating itself alive. Then came Revolution Summer, where committed members of the scene — many of whom, like Mark, were frustrated with the state of affairs both in the scene and in the world — came together to create a new, engaged scene. In our long interview, originally conducted in two parts in the same day, we talk about Mark’s upbringing, his discovery of punk (most critically, The Clash), coming to DC, straight edge, Revolution Summer, Positive Force DC, coming to the Catholic Faith, social activism, the We Are Family organization that reaches out to elderly people, and much more. In one of the best interviews of this project, Mark talks frankly about many subjects he’s never been interviewed about and he earnestly approaches all subjects with a rare and raw sensitivity. For more information about the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene, I recommend the following books: Banned In DC: Photos and Anecdotes From the DC Punk Underground (79-95) by Cynthia Connolly (1988) Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital by Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins (2001) And these documentaries: Positive Force: More Than A Witness; 30 Years of Punk Politics In Action directed by Robin Bell (2011) Salad Days: A Decade of Punk In Washington, DC directed by Scott Crawford (2014) Positive Force DC We Are Family The post LOUD! Greetings INTERNET! Welcome to episode 25 of CINEPUNX!!! This week we were lucky to sit down with Scott Crawford and Jim Saah, makers of Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, D.C. Check out the trailer below [youtube link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF3uSPyrQyQ” width=”612″ height=”345″] Salad Days does an admirable job documenting one of longest running and most diverse scenes in the American Hardcore Punk landscape. Scott and Jim were great to talk to, and we cannot thank them enough for sitting down with us. We discuss the film some in the episode, but due to scheduling problems we did not spend as much time on the movie as we would have liked. The interview is great of course, but we wanted also to give the movie a full review. Unfortunately, we got a little distracted so big apologies to Scott and Jim. Suffice to say, we both thought it was great and would strongly recommend seeing it. We were joined this episode by some great friends. If you are a regular listener than you should know Joseph Gervasi from our two episodes with him, but you should know about LOUD!FAST!PHILLY! His project documenting the Philadelphia punk scene, and of course his work with Exhumed Films who we love and dote over like fan boys. Joseph is great, had great questions, and again without his certainty that we could do an interview like this we might not have taken a chance to get it. Thanks so much Joseph for being awesome. We were also joined by one of my musical heros and nicest guys ever, Mike McTernan (Mike DC) of Damnation AD. Mike, being from DC and a musician, was able to add some insight to our conversation, and is just great. Also, if you don’t know Damnation AD get on that right now man. Wrong Evan was also there. SOUND NOTES: We recorded our intro section over the internet so please be patient with the sound, though it did turn out better than it has in the past. During the interview we had issues with one of our Mics not working, so at times sound cuts out some, and you have to strain to hear some of the questions. There was minimal other issues though, and while we continue to be embarrassed by the fact we don’t sound like other fancy podcasts, over all it is not so bad. Finally, Thanks to Federal Donuts for delicious donuts yet again. Technically, Liam paid for them, but if he had hit them up in advance he would have gotten them for free so that is his bad.
