Jenny Toomey & Kristin Thomson—arguably the two women most responsible for the ceaseless onslaught of incredible indie music in the 1990s due to the Simple Machines Records label and their explosively powerful band Tsunami—go head-to-head-to-head with Discograffiti during an unprecedented 3-hour interview during which they discuss the entirety of their catalog, which thankfully is being reissued today by Numero Group in a lovingly compiled box set entitled Loud Is As. Do yourself a big favor and get yourself one. Here's just some of the many things Jenny, Kristen, and I touch on in this podcast:  The story of how and why their label Simple Machines Records came to be; A track-by-track discographical discussion of everything they've ever released;  And why the band finally decided to initially call it a day. Brad Tolinski and Jaan Uhelszki are the authors of MC5 An Oral Biography of Rock's Most Revolutionary Band. It's an oral biography of the proto-punk Detroit rockers MC5. Centered around a series of interviews with MC5, their manager, and their inner circle—many of whom are no longer with us—that Tolinski and Uhelszki inherited from CREEM Magazine founding staffer and Mojo's US editor Ben Edmonds before his death, this book presents a genuinely candid, funny, and moving portrait of rock's most uncompromising and articulate band. Purchase a copy of MC5 An Oral Biography of Rock's Most Revolutionary BandFollow Brad Tolinski on FacebookFollow Jaan Uhelszki on FacebookContact Jaan Uhelszki: creemmagazinejaan@creem.comUpcoming Detroit Book Signing Event Info Episode Playlist ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/booked-on-rock-with-eric-senich--4901091/support.

We decided to make this episode of Nersey entirely free, just like an issue of VICE Magazine sitting in American Apparel circa 2006. Nersey is a podcast by Trey Smith, Drew Millard, and Slava P. We are produced by Steel Tipped Dove and our music is by Craig S. Jenkins. Our show is technically about music. We publish new episodes most weeks, plus blog posts sometimes. Free subscribers get to listen to the first half of each episode; paid subscribers get to listen to the whole thing, which includes our legendary “Joe Budden Podcast-Style Sleepers Section.” We're also on Patreon. Batten down the hatches and put on your raincoats, sailors, because we're headed straight into some damn unfavorable economic headwinds. By that, we mean that once again, VICE has laid a bunch of people off and is generally in trouble. As all you Music Man heads know, trouble starts with a T, which rhymes with P, and that stands for “podcast.” Our podcast. Which, today, is about VICE. We're joined by mega-genius Zachary Lipez of Creem Magazine to help us figure out what VICE was, because he was in the NYC scene back in the 2000s when the mag was really popping off; meanwhile, we were all dumb teens who would grow up to work at VICE in the 2010s. Other topics discussed include Zach's excellent piece on the downfall of music journalism, how bands used to take a bunch of money from cigarette brands, performatively not taking care of yourself, the lost art of talking s**t in incredibly low-stakes contexts, and also electroclash. Special thanks to Yuri for letting Drew record at his house and also informing us that VICE created a “virtual Lower East Side” in like 2007. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit nersey.substack.com/subscribe

1979 was an important year for rock and roll, but it was a bigger year for my musical journey. This was the year that the real obsession with buying records began. I had a job. I had a car. And I had put together a pretty awesome sound system in my bedroom. This was the first year I was buying new music AS it was coming out. I was no longer saving up for a record I read about in Creem Magazine. I was at the record store each and every week. In fact, this was the year I first started working at a record store, and you know I spent more money on music than I actually made at the store. So tonight’s celebration of the UK sounds of that year is truly a trip back in time. With a handful of exceptions, this was indeed a good portion of my playlist back then. London Calling. A Different Kind of Tension. Setting Sons. Cool For Cats. Labour of Lust. The list goes on and on of music I forced friends to endure whether they liked them or not. A lover of music and someone that is heavly influenced by culture, he is considered to be one of the most "influential people in NYC" and has editorial expience for prestigious outlets such as Vice, Brooklyn Vegan, New York Times, Revolver, just to name a few. It was great speaking as well as meeting Fred as we spoke about his youth growing up in DC's hardcore scene, going for it when it comes to shooting your shot, bringing rock n' roll's most legendary publication back to life, Creem Magazine and so much more. This episode is a business theme with my guests Chairman (and son of Creem magazine's co-founder Barry Kramer), JJ Kramer along with CEO/Publisher John Martin. Anyone from my generation may recognize the magazine or be reminded; I grew up reading it as a young teenager. It was around for twenty years and then disappeared for over twenty more. Now, it's back in both monthly digital and four issues a year of print.  Creem magazine was a ground-breaking music magazine back in the day and I'm happy to say, they're picking up right where they left off. Let's listen. Enjoy!

In this week's first segment (3:33 to 14:28), hosts Brent Butterworth and Dennis Burger start by celebrating the return of Creem magazine and discussing a new article about the resurrection of 8-track tapes thanks to Sacred Bones Records. Next up (15:26 to 37:09) they dig into the August issue of AudioXpress, which is dedicated to acoustics and acoustical treatments. Unsurprisingly, Brent and Dennis have opinions about how the high-end audio industry covers room acoustics, including the fact that the most thorough and conclusive research on this subject has largely been ignored. And for something completely different (38:06 to 51:00), they discuss a recent SoundStage! Access article by Dennis about Midjourney, a text-to-image neural network that might give some insights into public perception of the audiophile hobby.  Sources: “Sacred Bones Resurrects the Objectively Greatest Audio Format: The 8-Track” by Grace Scott: https://www.creem.com/fresh-creem/sacred-bones-records-sacred-8-track-townes-van-zandt “8-track player shootout” by Brent Butterworth: http://nebula.wsimg.com/70d6cc9f190ef501628c12bc8abc0c89?AccessKeyId=DF4B3AC4447AE4612BF0&disposition=0&alloworigin=1 [PDF] “Acoustics and Great Audio Electronics in audioXpress August 2022”: https://audioxpress.com/news/acoustics-and-great-audio-electronics-in-audioxpress-august-2022 "Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms (Audio Engineering Society Presents) 3rd Edition" by Floyd E. Hey, welcome to WASTOIDS With  Jaan Uhelszki of the legendary CREEM Magazine. Founded in Detroit in 1969, CREEM covered rock & roll irreverently and with a wickedly funny style. It closed up shop in 1989, but 30 years later, a new documentary film, 2019's CREEM: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine, helped to reignite interest in the publication, and now, CREEM has returned in full force over at CREEM.com. Not only is the site home to a remarkable archive—featuring stories by Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe, Patti Smith, Greil Marcus, Lisa Robinson, Susan Whitall, Dave Marsh, Robert Christgau, our guest Jaan, and so many others—it's also home to brand new features, interviews, articles, and music recommendations. We launched WASTOIDS last year for a lot of reasons, but one of the main ones is that it feels increasingly like music fans are looking for original and fun places to discover new music. CREEM was one of our primary inspirations. Uhelszki joins us for stories about the pot-fueled “cult of CREEM,” her role in its return, seeing Big Star live, and that time she got up on stage with KISS in full regalia. Thanks for listening. Dusty's worn more hats in the biz than the guys on Bonanza, it's no wonder people call him 'the metaphysical cowboy'. He even ran Prince's fanzine, spending weeks at a time at Paisley Park ...Dusty takes us from his first hearing "Strutter" on WMMS The Buzzard in Cleveland in '73 to meeting Gene Simmons in '92 to hear the Revenge pitch, stopping off on the way to 'alleged goings-on' July 23rd of '75 when KISS recorded their set in Wildwood, NJ, some of which would be used on their ultimate breakthrough ALIVE! ...I forgot to ask if Dusty's willing now to enlist but his wife did date Paul Stanley at one point so let's call it even. In Episode 57, Mike Derrico talks to Robert Duncan, former managing editor of Creem Magazine and lifelong rock and roll obsessive. Duncan, a musician himself, has been in and around the rock and roll world through some pivotal years, perhaps through rock’s most hedonistic period of all, the 1970s. Aside from Creem, he has contributed to notable publications such as Rolling Stone, Circus, Life and is the author of books such as The Noise: Notes from a Rock and Roll Era, Only the Good Die Young: The Rock and Roll Book of the Dead, the very first book ever written on Kiss, and has now, after decades written his first novel, Loudmouth. https://www.amazon.com/Loudmouth-Nove... https://www.duncanwrites.com/   As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history leaves an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone.   In past episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, J Geils Band, Billy Miller, Chris Cornell, Turn Me On Dead Man, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, disco vs. rock, Ticketmaster, Tom Petty, and most overrated and underrated artists. In this episode, we talk with Jaan Uhelszki, one of the founding editors at Creem and one of the first women to write nationally about rock n' roll. It's a fascinating road trip through the backyard of the Creem offices in the 70's. They were a group of outlaw writers, living in cramped quarters 24-7 and determined to reach rock readers with the unvarnished truth. Along the way, Jaan reveals rich stories on legendary misfits like Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh and Creem publisher, Barry Kramer. There probably isn't a rock icon that Jaan hasn't interviewed. In the 70 minute conversation (which does not drop in attention level), Jaan talks in great detail about Lou Reed, Neil Young, Ronnie Van Zant, Kiss, Ted Nugent, to name a few. Hear what it felt like, both intellectually and emotionally, to cover these seminal artists firsthand. In the history of rock ‘n' roll, Creem was the only true Rock ‘n' Roll magazine. It began in a run-down neighborhood of Detroit and at the epicenter of a rock movement (The Stooges, MC5) that was far removed from the commercial pressures of either Coast. This gave Creem the freedom to be bold, mercilessly speak the truth and damn the consequences. The magazine's all-star staff included legendary critics like Dave Marsh and Lester Bangs. Decades after the magazine ceased publishing, its fanatical and loyal readers still celebrate Creem's fearless, non PC humor.. and regard it not just as a magazine about rock, but an integral part OF rock. In this interview, documentary filmmaker Scott Crawford discusses the four-year making of the movie and the challenges, joys and obstacles to bringing this story of a revolutionary editorial movement to the screen.

Pasadena, California. Hard rock music was reborn with the release of the self-titled debut album from Van Halen. Guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen, along with his brother drummer Alex, Bassist Michael Anthony and flamboyant lead singer David Lee Roth, took hold of the airwaves and the stages across the world with awesome, energetic live shows that rocked. But amid all that success is a whole lot of weird and interesting things about the band. So, let’s take a deep dive into Van Halen… The band’s original name was Mammoth. They changed it after finding out another band had it first. It was Roth's idea to use the name Van Halen; though, ironically, Eddie and Alex didn't like it In 1977, Gene Simmons of KISS fame saw the band in concert. He liked them so much, he booked them for their first recording session. Simmons flew them to New York and bought them new clothes, but they still didn’t score a record deal. At the time, record companies were reluctant to sign Van Halen because disco was hot, and rock was not Years of jumping around on stage took its toll on Eddie. He had hip-replacement surgery in 1999. He also lost part of his tongue after being diagnosed with cancer in his throat and tongue On their 1979 tour, David Lee Roth gave each of the crew members some backstage passes. Those passes were to be given to “hot chicks.” If Roth got lucky that night, he gave the “winning roadie” $100 the next day Eddie and Alex were born and raised in the Dutch country of Holland. Their family moved to Pasadena in 1967 when the boys were young Roth was hyperactive as a child, and that behavior carried over to adulthood. Because Eddie had terrible stage fright, David Lee Roth did all the talking in interviews and on-stage Speaking of Eddie’s stage fright, he tried to qualm those fears using alcohol, which turned him in to a high-functioning alcoholic. He eventually got sober, but it took until 2006 to do it thanks to his new wife In 1982, David Lee Roth was firing zingers at fellow rocker Sammy Hagar in the press, telling Creem Magazine, “Sammy definitely has a social problem; I think it’s based on lack of education.” Ironically, of course, Sammy ended up replacing David Lee Roth as the new lead singer in 1985

The city of Boston in 1976 was a busy musical town, as the debut album from the band Boston hit the airwaves and music store shelves. It was in this very same year that Ric Ocasek and The Cars came forward to produce a sound totally unlike Boston the band, focused on pop synth new wave experimentation that earned them millions of record sales, and eventually a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Ric Ocasek made a name for himself not only as a prolific singer and songwriter, but also as a producer for fellow new wave bands like Romeo Void and Suicide, and later, alternative rockers Weezer. He even began producing the 90s pop trio of brothers Hanson but was booted off the record for forbidding corporate presence in the studio while the brothers were recording. In 1984, the band produced one of their best pop songs of all time, Drive. During the video shoot, Ocasek met supermodel Paulina Porizkova on the set. They fell in love, got married in ’89, and had two boys. 1978 was a great year for the debut of the Cars, as they were named Best New Artist by both Rolling Stone and Creem Magazine. In 1979, they lost their Best New Artist Grammy award to one-hit wonder, A Taste of Honey. Anyone that has met Ric Ocasek might say he was a little bit off the wall. Perhaps that’s because his family life wasn’t exactly simple. Ocasek's father worked for NASA on Top secret projects. Ric recalled one time when government agents visited his house and questioned his mother about the dreams his father had at night. The band broke up in 1988 and Ocasek told reporters that a reunion would never happen. So, in 2005, surviving bandmates joined fellow 70s-rocker Todd Rundgren to form “The New Cars,” performing many of the Cars and Rundgren’s hits. The band toured in 2006, then disbanded shortly after, with the full Ocasek-led group reuniting in 2010 for a new album. But the reunion didn’t last long. The band toured for less than three weeks before calling it quits. The next time they appeared together occurred during the live and televised performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2018, when they played several of their biggest hits together. It turned out to be their last performance together, as Ric Ocasek died in 2019.

This is a the definitive episode of the Fall season! Fred has a history in underground music that is as massive in scope as it is varied in station. Having been published in Vice, worked the Toyota/Scion Rock Fest, presented the absolutely incredible NOLA documentary for NOISEY... phew, lets backpedal. You see, Fred started out booking shows in NYC, bringing his favorite bands to town. he parlayed that into a career in journalism that led him to becoming Senior Editor of Brooklyn Vegan for 6 years.   He'd had a brief stint as Editor In Chief (as well as DJ/Host) for Invisible Oranges. On to Noisey, where he'd also served as Editor in Chief for almost 3 years. On and on to Editor At Large/Director of Marketing at Revolver. He had then struck out on his own, as the Owner and Operator of Jackpot Plus Artist Services... Deep breath... The long lost, terribly missed, and deeply regarded CREEM Magazine came calling, and Boy Howdy, who would say no?! Intro music "Martyrs" by Heart Out. Theme music by Gown. find Creem on IG @creemmag
