In this episode, we're joined by Peter Cortner—renowned for his iconic role as the frontman of the legendary punk band Dag Nasty. Of course we hit on the "Wig Out At Denkos" and "Field Day" albums. We also talk about Cortner's really cool new band, Applied Knowledge, who release their debut album in May.“Easily the equal of the Replacements at their best -- and as much a forebear of the Goo Goo Dolls' eventual success as a Minneapolis quartet -- Field Day is just that for the group. Peter Cortner's singing in a mere year's time has moved from the edgy, high-pitched rasp of Wig Out to include a ruminative, gently expressing tone, with more vocal control and a sweet edge than one will find in most of the band's peers. As for his lyrics, besides the analysis of personal interaction that defined earlier Dag Nasty material, Cortner addresses everything from being in a band and wanting to write "songs, powerful songs" to reflections on death, loss, and separation”. -All Music MusicApplied Knowledge "Earthlink"Music ClipsApplied Knowledge "Not Too Far"The Charms "So Pretty"The Dogmatics "I Love Rock N Roll"Produced and Hosted by Steev Riccardo

Ryan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. This project allowed Allen to explore a more personal and memoir-esque musical style, reminiscent of post-hardcore troubadours like Ted Leo, and Bob Mould Allen's music often reflects his personal life and experience, featuring songs about his family, friends, and his journey through music over the years. Allen has also been involved in the band BIG LIFE, a group of seasoned local musicians creating Melodic Hardcore music inspired by Dischord Records' "Revolution Summer" era. BIG LIFE's sound draws influence from bands like Dag Nasty, and Fugazi. Ryan Allen's career illustrates a dedication to evolving and experimenting within the realm of music, making him a distinctive and respected figure in Detroit's rich musical landscape. Well, we can now add writer to the list of things Ryan Allen excels at. In the Fall/Winter Edition of Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal, Volume 2, Allen penned the piece “The Ties That Bind Hardcore Punk & Power Pop.” Ryan stopped by Thunderlove Studio recently to chat with Keith about the article and the whole of his music career. Couple episodes back we discussed the various unique places we've attended a gig. Now we can add "movie theatre" to that list. This past weekend the two Arlington, TX dates from the Metallica M72 tour were simulcast to theatres the world over. We both caught the Sunday show. And decided to go the event with a fine studded wristband. We go over the setlist, our theatre experiences and veer off to places unexpected. In all, a fantastic conversation! In our "News, Views and Tunes", we struggle talking about the recent Batushka gig. Musically, we crank some Onslaught, Whiplash, Dag Nasty, the aforementioned Batushka, Inepsy, Disciples Of Power, Phantom Lord and we introduce black n rollers Hellfynder in our "Indie Spotlight". The draft is back and this time we used Dischord records as the poolfor our picks. Dischord is perhaps the most well known DIY label inthe world and it has had many great releases. We went draft style andpicked our favorite full lengths from the label. There was a littletwist thrown in. None of the bands could contain members or MinorThreat . So no Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Fugazi etc . So thatsignificantly reduced what many would pick in a normal draft includingpeople from those bands. It was fun and interesting and harder thanyou think (for us anyway) . Enjoy!

A chance meeting between Todd Philips and Kenny Chambers at a Dag Nasty all ages show at TT The Bears in Cambridge MA in 1987 led to a series of events that started with the seventeen year old drummer playing with Moving Targets. Dave Smalley's been a punk rock fixture since the early ‘80s when he fronted DYS. Stints as the lead singer in Dag Nasty and ALL followed before the touring life caused him to reconsider what it meant to be in a band. The Sandcastle demo was band comprised of myself, my brother Andrew, with musical contributions from Tony Tullai (THE LAST DANCE; THE PROPHETESS). This demo is really a collection of songs recorded in 1988 with the bulk of them were recorded in 1992. The best way to describe the Sandcastle Demo would be experimental mixed with an interest in Motorhead, Joy Division, Black Flag, and Dag Nasty. I'm not saying this demo sounds like any of that, but those were the influences as I recall from all the contributors. Many thanks to Derick Greene for sending me this demo. I did everything I could (well, at least I attempted to do everything I could) to have this sound better. I don't think I achieved that, but I thank you for listening nonetheless. Also, big thanks to Rick Greeno (HAYWIRE, EXIT WOUND, ANIMAL MOTHER) for being a constant source of inspiration and support since we met in the early 80s. Lastly, thank you to Dennis Lluy who loaned me his 4 track in 1992 to "engineer" most of this with Jeff Caudill. Yes Jeff, you were there and you took park. 0:00 - Opening 1:44 - Fire Inside 4:33 - Tough Guy 6:40 - It's My Life 8:50 - Tribute to Lemmy 11:44 - Oh Arianna! In this latest special episode of Retrosonic Podcast we welcome one of our favourite vocalists and frontmen Dennis Lyxzén, to discuss his latest project Fake Names - a collaboration with some well known names from the Washington D.C. Hardcore Punk scene, Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Dag Nasty), Michael Hampton (Embrace, S.O.A.), Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys) and Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Rites of Spring). Dennis explains how he ended up in a band with some of his musical heroes, their impressive heritage and how he first discovered American Hardcore Punk. He also touches on the songwriting process, the influence of The Ruts and what to expect during their forthcoming American tour and we pick some choice cuts from "Expendables" and the Fake Names self-titled debut album. We also cover more of his many and varied current projects including the atmospheric Post-Punk of INVSN and the Punk Rock outfit Vännäs Kasino and then there's the free-form Jazz of Backengrillen which features members of Refused and the virtuoso Jazz Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. We also discuss his new "Dennis Deep Cuts" YouTube channel and his time in The (International) Noise Conspiracy, touring with The Hives at the height of the "Swedish Invasion" and we cover what his other former bandmates in INC, Sara Almgren, Inge Johansson and Ludwig Dahlberg are up to these days. For our many readers/listeners who are into The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Dennis tells us how he first met new Refused guitarist Mattias Barjed and of working at the venue when Union Carbide Productions played his hometown of Umea in Northern Sweden. We hope you enjoy this thoroughly entertaining show in the company of Dennis Lyxzén. For full track-listing and links on where to buy the featured records and find out more information on the bands and projects, please check out the feature at Retro Man Blog at this link: https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2023/04/retrosonic-podcast-with-dennis-lyxzen.html
I had a chance to catch up with Chad Jolly and we talked about A LOT of 90’s bands – it was interesting to see where our tastes aligned, diverged and the impact these bands had on him growing up. We ramble on about; Bad Religion, The Lemonheads, Texas is the Reason, Avail, Lifetime, Junction, […]
Is the sum greater than (or ever equal to) the parts? In this case, Fake Names is the sum and the parts are Refused, Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Embrace, One Last Wish, Soulside, Girls Against Boys and Fugazi. It's a tall order to be sure and the supergroup pulls from some varied influences, some more expected than others. How close do they get to their lineage. We discuss (without surprisingly little debate). This week's guest, Tim Hinely (founder of Dagger Zine and editor of 'Where The Wild Gigs Were: A Trip Thru America's Legendary Underground Music Venues') brings us the debut album by legendary Washington D.C. band Dag Nasty. Originally released in 1986 on Dischord Records, 'Can I Say' is a blistering collection of masterfully-played, intelligent punk tunes about looking inward and moving forward. Turn. It. Up! Songs featured in this episode: Under Your Influence - Dag Nasty; In My Role As A Professional Singer and Ham - Rat Bastard (Mark Eitzel cover); The Godfather, Justification (with Shawn Brown) - Dag Nasty; Kids of the Black Hole - Adolescents; Unafraid - Alloy; Ohio is for Lovers - Hawthorne Heights; Values Here, One To Two - Dag Nasty; I Don't Care About You - Fear; Circles - Dag Nasty; Suburban Home - Descendents; Thin Line, Justification, What Now, I've Heard - Dag Nasty; Attitude - Bad Brains; Under Your Influence, Can I Say - Dag Nasty; Celebrated Summer - Husker Du; Never Go Back - Dag Nasty; Love's My Only Crime - Laughing Hyenas; 100 Punks - Dag Nasty (Generation X cover)
Descendents – Hope (Album : Milo Goes To College -1982). Dag Nasty – Circles (Album : Can I Say – 1986) Bad Religion – You (Album : No Control – 1989)
I get to sit down with the man who is probably the most influential and pivotal to modern punk rock guitar playing as we know it. Listen in as I punish Brian for an hour and consistently remind him of this fact.https://www.jimdunlop.com/
Thanks to Jason for subbing in for John Scott last week! Scott talks about his time on Beaver Island including all the beers and dudes. Former host of our show returns to remind us he's always here. Charlie Brown is the existential comic strip we didn't know we needed. Email time means we read your messages while offering our random commentary. Brian wants to know if Mickey Rourke was right about Tom Cruise. Somehow this means Piers Morgan makes an appearance on the show. Has Tom Cruise been the same guy in his movies for 30 years? Is Mickey Rourke the actor's actor for a legitimate reason? The fellas ponder which actors can shed their surface while others never seem to shake the view we have of them. Scott loves Jon Bernthal a bad-ass method actor who isn't a dick on set which reminds Mike for some reason of his time in Baltimore giving Uber rides from The Block. If you live in Maryland, you know what's up. We talk about coded media words that always mean more than they appear to up front. Riots and thugs for example. Mike can't forget some thugs from high school with one in particular invading his living space 20 years ago. All of us are judging people all the time. When it comes to Cruise and Rourke's beef, who gets to judge who is open to interpretation. The brand of crazy that Cruise and Rourke offer are vastly different according to Luke, who would much rather watch Rourke over Cruise any day of the week. Luke also idolizes Brad Pitt's smoking prowess. Danny writes us to find out how and when we get our creative headspace rolling. Luke gets pissed about condiment talk. Just know we love ALL the time and energy you give us and it's absolutely reciprocated. Mr. Pink says hello. He also wants us to remember that we can pray any problems away. Mike reminds us that at this very moment stoned teenagers are driving around in your area. Our friend Ryan Liberty died 19 years ago this week. So we decided to close the show with Million Days by Dag Nasty. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Keith Ulrey of Pohgoh. We talked about Dag Nasty's 1987 album "Wig Out at Denko's" & the history of the band and its many reunions/lineups. We also chat about Keith's record label New Granada & his record store Microgroove, which if you ever find yourself in the Tampa area, I highly recommend. Lastly, Pohgoh has a new album, "Du Und Ich," coming out later this year on Spartan Records, so keep an eye out for that! On this week's episode of Between Two Amps, we welcome the force of nature, Doug Carrion (Field Day, Dag Nasty, Descendants). We talk about getting into playing music through his exposure to jazz at a young age, getting into the punk scene of SoCal, adventures with Fletcher (of Pennywise fame), the evolution of punk and hardcore and how many varied forms the music has taken, touring, the evolution of his rig throughout his career, what gear he takes on the road, fly rigs, an impromptu commercial break brought to you by Doug, the latest with Field Day, and LOTS MORE!!! Holy Baker, our second longest episode ever! Two albums, one CD. Two guests, one vision. Two cohosts, one long spew of commentary. Well, if any band or release deserves an extra long deep dive, it's this one. Mike Gitter always brings great historic insight and was something of a hardcore Zelig. Peter Cortner needs no introduction. One of the most recognizable voices and singer on one of the most beloved Dischord releases. He doesn't do many interviews and it meant the world that he agreed to be a part of this episode. Listen all at once or in convenient bite-sized chunks!
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. WELCOME to a preview of one of our Patreon episodes with co-host Sarah Blumenthal. Every week we dig into an album from our past and find out if it still resonates with us. On this episode we talk about Farside's 1999 album, "The Monroe Doctrine." We also talk about joke songs, Revelation Records, comparing everything thing to Dag Nasty and once again, why does Josh hate fun? From the Crimean War to the Prehistoric era and across the universe to the planet of Dune, we plunge our needles into each and every groove of Iron Maiden's 1983 metal manifesto, Piece of Mind. Side quests in this congenial confab include tangents and musings about X-Ray Spex, Dag Nasty, The Getup Kids, Warren Zevon, and The Who (not to be confused with Mongolian metal band The Hu). It's a landmark episode for Arianne, who marks a year since their first appearance on the show and subsequently invokes the State Comptroller Atkins rule for a crucial cut from Piece of Mind.
Swiz is one of the great, lost DC Hardcore bands of the late 80's/early 90's. While plenty of ink has been spilt about their neighbors, Soul Side, Shudder to Think, Scream and of course, Fugazi. Swiz seems largely forgotten to time save for singer Shawn Brown's notoriety as Dag Nasty's pre Can I Say front man. None of their output is currently available on the music streaming services so wanting to hear the band today takes some effort (thanks to those dedicated fans who have uploaded their records to YouTube). All a shame really as even after all these years and hundreds of bands playing this same style later, the bands's 1988 self-titled LP still packs a wallop. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes, it's a fierce, tight testament to what this music was always supposed to be, urgent, exciting and to the point.

On this episode I chat with musician and punk legend Doug Carrion. We talk about what the punk scene was like in the early 80's and what it takes to be in a band. Plus he shares some pretty rad stories from back in the day when punk rock was considered 'dangerous'. We also talk about him playing in the legend punk bands: The Descendents, Dag Nasty and Doggystyle. And we talk about his current band, Field Day, and what they have coming up. You can follow Field Day at @fielddaysounds and Doug at @dougcarrion This was an awesome interview, give it a listen now and STAY RAD. Welcome to Episode 29! I can't believe I've kept it up for this long. I only missed a couple weeks since I started this thing and at times like I don't want to do it at all, but I always get pulled back to it because I love playing music for people.
