Pourquoi les soldats américains sont-ils surnommés "G.I." ?

Le film "The Story of G.I. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? In 2011, Robbins, along with Kerosene 454's drummer and fellow Channels bandmate Darren Zentek, bassist Brooks Harlan, and guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, released an EP under the name Office of Future Plans. The band, who had been playing since 2009 and released an album on Dischord Records in November 2011, but as of October 2016, they are not together anymore. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two veterans of ‘90s rock who went on to form bands that referenced air travel in their name and whose biggest bands both start with Jaw: Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and J. Robbins of Jawbox. Sorry if that was confusing, I'll clear it up for you. Blake Schwarzenbach was and is the singer and guitarist of the band Jawbreaker, which had its initial run from 1986 until 1996, at which time they acrimoniously splintered after longtime fans turned their backs on 1995's Dear You, mostly because these dogmatic listeners were mad that the band had signed to a major label. These things were a big deal then, which seems kind of quaint now. History was incredibly kind to both Jawbreaker and Dear You, so much so that in 2017 they reformed to headline Chicago's massive Riot Fest, and they've been playing together on and off ever since. In the intervening years, Schwarzenbach also played in other great bands, most notably Jets to Brazil, which is what I was referencing earlier. Jawbreaker is on tour now, and they're bringing along some of their favorite bands to open, which brings us to… Jawbox, which followed a sorta similar trajectory to Jawbreaker. They came together in the late ‘80s, released a couple of incredible albums for a respected independent label, and then moved into the big leagues, with all the baggage and joy that might bring. Jawbox split in 1997, and Robbins went on to form Burning Airlines—are you seeing a pattern here?—but Jawbox reconvened in 2019. Those two bands certainly aren't the beginning and end of Robbins' amazing contributions to the world of music, though: Prior to Jawbox he was in Government Issue—you'll hear them referred to as GI in this chat—he's served as producer for a number of bands over the years, including Jets to Brazil, the Promise Ring, the Dismemberment Plan, Against Me, and other bands that make my 1990s heart sing. I hope you'll notice I haven't said emo once yet. In this conversation, J. and Blake talk about what it feels like to play shows together again after all these years—and all this pandemic. Blake compliments J. on his psychedelic guitar playing, and J. isn't sure what to make of that. And we learn—I think for the first time—that Jawbox briefly considered calling themselves Jawbreaker, before J. discovered Jawbreaker's first single at a record store and crossed it off his list. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to J. Robbins and Blake Schwarzenbach for chatting. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.

Episode 72 is a conversation with Enoch Thompson who you may know as Skeeter Thompson. Enoch has played bass for the band Scream for over 40 years now. Rather than start at the beginning of time like I normally do we start in 1981 and talk about his time in Scream from their first tour with Government Issue to trips to Europe, recording various records and more recent shows all the while forming a family like bond with his bandmates that still exists today. Enoch also talks about a number of current projects as well. Music is in his DNA and his bands music has been a big part of mine so it was great to talk to him here.

This week we talk about the first release of the classic line-up of Government Issue, "Boycott Stabb". It's a record that was important to both me and Jeff growing up. GI were one of my favorite bands to see live. John Stabb was, by turns, thoroughly intense, vulnerable and hilarious on stage. Tom Lyle always played at a crushing volume with extreme precision. Marc Alberstadt was one of the best drummers of the era. The bassist slot was always rotating, but always excellent players. This record is, in many ways , the re-birth of the band and the beginning of GI mach 2. Some of their best songs start here. We were lucky enough to have a conversation with the architect of their sound, Tom Lyle, in what is hopefully the first of a series of conversations about this mighty band's career. Drew Stone also stops by, to speak about what this important record means to him. Join us for a peek behind the torn curtain. It's worth the risk and worth your time. John Stabb lives on in our hearts and on the recordings we are privileged to revisit.

Live at the Safari Club: A People’s History of HarDCore is the uncensored oral history of a notorious underground punk venue in the nation’s capital, told by the very bands, fans, zinesters, promoters, graffiti artists, scenesters, senators’ kids and activists who made it happen.  From 1988 to 1997, the Safari Club was Washington, DC’s version of New York’s iconic CBGBs. An Ethiopian restaurant by day turned-Go-Go club-on-Saturday nights, this windowless dive deep in the heart of the city then known as the “murder capital of the world” transformed into an all-ages venue every Sunday afternoon. New York bands Sick of it All, Murphy’s Law, Bold, Earth Crisis and Gorilla Biscuits played their first DC shows on the Safari’s tiny mirrored stage. Southern California’s Chain of Strength, Insted, and Strife all breezed through at least once, while local legends Ignition, Kingface, Swiz, Battery, Damnation A.D. and Government Issue screamed for change. Live at the Safari Club allows the scene to tell its own tales—the broken arms, bruised egos, back-stabbings, riots, rip-offs, fights, lifelong friendships and love stories revolving around the music. John Finn of Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor (guest interviewed by Stacey Finney)/May 31, 2014 Stacey Finney guest interviews John Finn of the bands Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor. John was born in the lower Northeast section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania known as Feltonville, eventually moving to the Mayfair section of the city. John spent his formative years playing ball on his street with the other local kids and protecting their playground turf. John talks about the discipline and respect he gained as a result of his Catholic School education and the positive influence it had on him personally. John discusses his experiences as a kid diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how the nuns handled his active behavior by tying him to a chair with an electrical cord as a means to keep him seated. He was consequently labeled early on as Beelzebub by his former nuns and even given his own private classroom in which his daily lessons were delivered one-on-one. John discusses the early influences that led him into the Philly hardcore music scene and how he became involved in his bands, Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor, in addition to some of the escapades that ensued during his tenures in these bands. Both of John’s bands opened for the likes of the Cro Mags and Government Issue as well as some other well known groups which are mentioned in the interview. John talks very comically about his ongoing conflicts with the band Circle of Shit and how they eventually became friends. He also shares some other follies, such as when he and friends “kidnapped” a metalhead coworker to keep him safe during a fight that broke out at a house party. Some of John’s interactions with skinheads and his anti-racist views are brought up, providing valuable perspective on those volatile times in the Philadelphia HC punk scene. Many grew up in the Georgetown and Northwest areas of DC, where they developed a sense of social justice by witnessing its injustices first hand - they were rich kids living in a privileged world, a social elite.   Some of the many legendary DC bands:   Minor Threat, Teen Idols, S.O.A., FUGAZI, Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Iron Cross, VOID, The Faith, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Marginal Man, Gray matter, EMBRACE, Soul Side, rites Of Spring, Ignition, Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Battery, Ashes, Gauge, SEGMENT 3:       Essential DC Hardcore Records from Our collections:            DAG NASTY - Can I Say Original release 1986 Dischord Records Re-Released in 2002 on CD - CD contains bonus material   Dag Nasty was a Washington D.C. melodic hardcore band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/   BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light             Original Release 1983 on PVC Records             Reissued 1987 Caroline Records             ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records.   Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of  their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs.           The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers  Bad Brains, released in 1983.   A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains               MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records   Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat             Other Links and Info:   Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio

Welcome back! You've got yourself a bigtime MEGA-POD here, fellow Conspirator... In this one, GG and Furb explore the claims being made by the Obama Administration (and the Brits) that the Assad regime in Syria used chemical weapons against people in that nation. We also look at a fundamental question that if often posed to anarcho-capitalists (ie voluntarists), which is, as the title implies, "Wouldn't an anarcho society simply turn into a de-facto government/state run by the folks with the most powerful police agency? Good information here. Plus a refutation of a statement made by David Friedman about so-called "Market Failure", which is a HUGE misnomer and runs contrary to the reality of what a market is! That plus music by Broadcast "Come on, Let's Go", Government Issue with "Jaded Eyes", sundry clips from The Stooges, The Cult, The Demons, Killing Joke, and Massive Attack, and The Cult "The Witch". Thanks for joining us! We have a special, non-radio production available for you to hear and spread to friends, and in this we concentrate on some of the fears people express about anarcho, or voluntaryist political/philosophical ideology. How would it work? Why wouldn't it devolve into a battle of the biggest private police force? How would disputes be handled? What about protecting children? Gardner Goldsmith and Furb (founder of the Freedom Book Club, found at www.freedombookclub.com) discuss some of these issues, in this the first of a series of special productions in which we attempt to attract more people to the foundational ethics of freedom. With music by Government Issue ("Jaded Eyes") and The Horrors "Sea Within a Sea"... Visit us at www.libertyconspiracy.com! Be Seeing You!

Welcome back, and thanks for listening! Spread the word, and remember to visit us at www.libertyconspiracy.com! In this production, we look at a piece recently written by actor John Cusack. Mr. Cusack is well known as a leftist Democrat. But in this recent piece, he explains to readers that he can no longer trade the destruction of civil liberties and the murders of innocent people for what he thinks are beneficial social programs in the US. Libertarians Gardner Goldsmith and Joy Sandoz delve into this, and why it is so refreshing and important. That and a visit from Soph, listening in the UK, and music! Yep! Listen for: Government Issue "Jaded Eyes", The Bell Rays "Blues for Godzilla", Broadcast "Come On, Let's Go!", Raphael Saddiq "Over You", MOTORHEAD "The Ace of Spades", Throw Rag "Swingset Superman", The Sex Pistols (live) "Holidays in the Sun" (note the similarity in the opening of "Holidays" and "Swingset") and The DEMONS "I'll Make You Sorry"! Welcome back to the gang of plotters we call the Liberty Conspiracy! In this program, we offer a podcast version of our May 1, 2012 radio show, on which Gardner Goldsmith covered breaking stories such as the revelation (which we already knew) that Nancy Pelosi lied when she claimed she was not made aware of CIA torture (oh, sorry, "enhanced interrogation in the form of waterboarding, but remember, it's not 'torture' any more, not the way it was in WWII), and we look at the lies of the current President that GM has paid back all of its TARp bailout cash -- Not true by any stretch of the imagination! Then, we take a good look at a mini debate between Ron Paul and Paul Krugman, going more in-depth and seeing who truly believes in freedom and prosperity. This is a valuable segment unto itself, and we hope you'll recommend it to others! That and music from Paul Weller ("Green" and "Around the Lake"), Plan B "Welcome to Hell", Telly Saalas "Who Loves Ya Baby?" (REALLY!), Hall and oates "Rich Girl", Government Issue "Jaded Eyes", WIRE "Comet" and "Hard Currency", Silver SUn Pickups "Panic Switch", and Paul Weller again with "No Tears to Cry" (off "Wake Up the Nation")!! Hope you like it! Be Seeing You!
