Ryan SinnTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Ryan Sinn. Ryan Sinnott is the bass player for the pop punk band The Distillers, and the founding bass player for the pop punk band Angels & Airwaves. In this episode, we chat about how he came to be a bass player in the first place, and how important it is to him to maintain the structure of the role of a bass player. We talk about the fancy flourishes and fills that some bass players get overly enthusiastic about, and how there can only be one Les Claypool! As Ryan is bound by an NDA, he cannot really discuss his time with Angels & Airwaves; so instead, I tell him about the first time I heard that debut album. It was a magical experience for me and one that I remember to this day. Next, we dive into where I first heard his band The Distillers, and how he came to be part of that project. He does let me play that first song by The Distillers that caught my attention (thank you Ryan). Ryan is a certified audio engineer, and he does explain why he felt the need to go that route, and he gives some less expensive shortcut tips for anyone out there who wants to go to audio engineering school. Lastly, we discuss some of the interesting paydays that come along with songs being selected for video games. The Distillers had a song on the video game Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. He was indifferent to many of them (“No one is going to like you guys, but I'll have you back,” he told Joey Ramone), blissfully unaware of how important his scruffy little club would soon become. In the span of only 15 months, the five groups that comprise the CBGB's pantheon all debuted: Television in March 1974, followed by Ramones in August and Blondie in October, then Patti Smith in February 1975 and Talking Heads four months later. Those five groups all quickly got record deals and became popular enough to outgrow CBGB's. By the fall of 1977, Smith was the only one who was still playing there. What succeeded the Big Five was an array of new and retro styles, all of which feature here: No Wave (Sonic Youth, Mars, DNA, Bush Tetras), post-punk (Ritual Tension, Unknown Gender, Khmer Rouge), mutant funk and R&B (James Chance & The Contortions, Mink DeVille), art-rock bands (R.L. Crutchfield's Dark Day, The Revelons, Erasers, Jeff and Jane Hudson) hardcore punk (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Vatican Commandos, Beastie Boys), and lots of power pop (Sorrows, The dBs, The Rudies, The Miamis, The Paley Brothers) . The club's best-known bands are present on this compilation but we've also revived interest in dozens of unfairly forgotten acts that, for a moment in time, made an album, EP, 45, or even a demo that crackled with innovation, wit, and joy. CBGB no longer exists, at least not in the physical plane, but what happened between those soot-filled, beer-stinking walls continues to reverberate around the world.

The sounds of new wave pop music and the early days of MTV were defined by the work of a handful of iconic musicians, and few stood taller in that era than Ric Ocasek, frontman and primary songwriter for the Cars. The Untold Story of Spikey Goldbach and His Musical Journey /////////////// In this episode, we're joined by Chris “Spikey” Goldbach, a longtime figure in Florida's punk and alternative music scene. He talks about growing up in Tamarac, getting his first drum kit at 10, and discovering early influences like The Ramones, Devo, and AC/DC. Spikey walks through the South Florida scene of the 1980s and 1990s, mentioning venues such as the Cameo, Club Soda, and Washington Square, and the impact of seeing bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Descendents.He reflects on his work with bands including Distant Anger, Blatant View, Nuclear Beer, RadioBaghdad, Collapsing Lungs, Irish Car Bomb, Hudson, Shai Hulud, and others, sharing stories from touring, recording with Jeremy Staska and Bill Stevenson, and experiencing a major-label run. Spikey continues to perform with Against All Authority and remains active in music today while living in Indiana.

SNFU founders Marc and Brent Belke discuss band history, rare recordings, records, vinyl reissues on Trust Records, upcoming events at the Punk Rock Museum & more. Topics Include: Marc and Brent Belke join from Vancouver and Victoria to discuss SNFU's December 5th Punk Rock Museum exhibit and album re-release. The exhibit coincides with Trust Records' re-release of SNFU's debut album "...And No One Else Wanted to Play" with extensive extras. The re-release includes a 53-page booklet with rare photos, interview excerpts, and a full record of early demos and alternate versions. The exhibit features band paraphernalia, posters, t-shirts, and artwork, originally displayed at a Saskatchewan museum last summer before moving to Vegas. Marc and Brent will provide guided tours at the Punk Rock Museum and participate in a roundtable discussion on December 5th. The brothers describe Edmonton's early 1980s scene as intimate with only 50 people, mixing new wave, rockabilly, and emerging hardcore sounds. Getting punk records in Alberta meant ordering from New York stores via mail, waiting two months, and receiving only 25% of selections. Pivotal records included Bad Brains' ROIR cassette, Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation, Sex Pistols' debut, and Minor Threat's Out of Step. The LA hardcore scene heavily influenced SNFU, with bands like Circle Jerks, Social Distortion, and Youth Brigade making significant impressions. SNFU formed when Marc and Brent's band lost members, recruiting bassist Curtis and drummer Evan Kaufmann based on personality over experience. Singer Chi Pig brought irreverent humor and sarcastic lyrics that became central to SNFU's identity and separated them from serious hardcore bands. The band recorded their debut album in two weeks with limited preparation, creating the raw energy that defined their sound. Early SNFU combined hardcore speed with melodic elements, drawing from both aggressive punk and bands like The Damned and Buzzcocks. The band signed with BYO Records for their second album, appreciating the DIY ethos and direct artist-to-label relationship. SNFU toured extensively across North America, playing everywhere from established venues to DIY spaces and experiencing varied punk scenes nationwide. The brothers discuss how the band's legacy feels incomplete, with the Trust re-release helping emphasize positive aspects of their history. Brent left SNFU to attend music school, studying jazz and strings, and now works creating music for film projects. Marc emphasizes Trust Records' meticulous approach, taking four years to perfect the release compared to SNFU's tendency to rush. Both brothers have never visited the Punk Rock Museum and look forward to experiencing it while giving tours on December 5th. We're joined by Nancy Barile, award-winning author of "I'm Not Holding Your Coat", an insightful chronicle of her life as an OG Philadelphia/Boston punk who lived through the golden age of hardcore music as it evolved in real time before her eyes. The Ramones, Bad Brains, Misfits, Minor Threat, Black Flag... You name it, she saw it. We talk about the legendary brawl in Kensington, booking the infamous "Gathering of the Tribes" show, cold calling CBGBs to get bands booked, and bumping elbows with just about every legendary figure in hardcore punk, and much more. Her husband, the late great Al Barile of SSD, was a pioneer of the straight edge movement and a name brought up often on HardLore throughout the years. He sadly passed away in April of 2025, and we talk all about their chance meeting, his impact on us, and share stories of Al through the years and look back at his perception of how straight edge and hardcore music have grown since his early days in SSD. Published by writer and musician Howard Wuelfing, Descenes was a hyperlocal chronicle of D.C.'s burgeoning punk, hardcore and new wave communities. It featured scene reports, interviews, and passionate live and record reviews of now-legendary acts like Bad Brains, Slickee Boys, and Half Japanese and dozens of others that never gained national recognition. Punk music branched out in the late 70s / early 80s into a harder, faster, thrashier style than its earlier predecessor. If (as is often claimed) the original wave of punk was a reaction to the complexity of prog and the lack of danger in other forms of popular music, then hardcore was the next phase of that during the era of post-punk. It was about catharsis and screaming out about injustice. Then there was Bad Brains. Welcome to episode 129 of See Hear Podcast. Tim has selected the 2012 documentary Bad Brains: A Band In DC for round table discussion. Bad Brains brought something different to the table for their time. In America in the early eighties, punk bands generally weren't playing reggae music as a regular part of their sets. Certain British bands were combining punk energy with a reggae outlook in their music. Bad Brains had gone from being influenced by the jazz fusion stylings of Return To Forever to being converted to punk via the Sex Pistols (already making them unique). Seeing Bob Marley perform made them convert to Rastafarianism and incorporate reggae as well as hardcore punk into their music – not a hybrid, but two sides of the same coin. The documentary goes back and forth between current day events (at the time of filming) and archival footage of the band to tell their story. We get a worrisome start with a “how-did-we-get-here?” approach to the rest of the film.....a trope I'm quite fond of. In a way, the Bad Brains tale could be the story of millions of bands, but they're seen as hugely exciting pioneers of what they do. Many important bands that followed sang their praises as an influence (Beastie Boys, Nirvana....) HR, their “lead throat” gradually became more and more unstable in his behaviour, and in a time where no one was using the expression “mental health”, his behaviour was probably explained away as “that's just HR”, rather than investigating if there was something wrong. Sadly, Kerry wasn't available, but Tim and I discussed positive mental attitudes, wearing motorcycle helmets on stage, not showing up to gigs, punk that wasn't nihilistic, and much more.
