Rifkin shares his background, including his consultancy roles as a pop music historian and his 12 years as a touring musician. They discuss his first concert experience, watching Bob Dylan with Ani DiFranco as the opening act at the Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia, and the interesting intersections his life has had with notable music historians like Alan Lomax.Rifkin recounts his experience attending a unique U2 concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, highlighting how seeing a globally famous band in an intimate venue was a surreal and memorable experience. He emphasizes the different dimensions of enjoying massive arena shows versus small, underground music scenes. He talks about his favorite bands, particularly Akron Family and other experimental groups, often performing at DIY venues like Silent Barn and emphasizing how these experiences felt more personal and impactful. The conversation shifts to Jesse's walking tours, which often focus on the punk and post-punk scenes in NYC, featuring iconic sites like CBGB. He discusses the importance of understanding the human and local context behind legendary music and bands, offering a more tangible and relatable connection to this history. His tours aim to demystify the grandiosity of famous musicians by highlighting their humble beginnings in intimate settings. Finally, Jesse talks about his book and its evolution from his extensive tours and Instagram presence, which caught the attention of his editor in 2019. He details the content of the book, which spans 60 years of music history, categorizing different NYC music scenes, and offers practical insights into creating community-driven music venues. Jesse's mission is to show that music and performance spaces can be accessible and transformative, urging people to see the possibility within DIY approaches to music and community building.BANDS: Akron Family, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Castanets, The Cure, Elephant 6 Recording Company, Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynard, Neutral Milk Hotel, New York Dolls, Olivia Tremor Control, Patti Smith, Ramones, Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, U2, Velvet Underground, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, Woods.VENUES: 171A, Apollo Theater, Bowery Ballroom, CBGB, Death by Audio, Jelly NYC, Silent Barn, Tonic, Uncle Paulie's, Wolf Trap. On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're stepping into the grimy, graffiti-smeared chaos of CBGB—the legendary Bowery dive that became punk's ground zero. A Cathedral of Misfits. Picture this: December 1973, Hilly Kristal, a former Marine, opens a bar at 315 Bowery, dreaming of country, bluegrass, and blues. Instead, the junkies and misfits of New York's underbelly gave him something else—a revolution.  CBGB wasn't just a club; it was a musical laboratory for rebels. With a simple rule that bands couldn't play covers, The Ramones hammered out three-chord blitzkriegs, Patti Smith snarled poetry into punk, Blondie strutted to stardom, and Talking Heads turned weird into gold—all while helping change rock forever. The place stank, the bathrooms were a nightmare, but the music? Pure, unpolished fire.  By the ‘80s, Sunday matinees flipped it to hardcore—bands like Bad Brains and the Beastie Boys' early thrash days tearing the roof off.  From punk's birth to its brutal evolution, CBGB launched a global DIY movement, proving you didn't need polish, just guts.  But the story ends ugly—rent wars and gentrification killed it in 2006, turning a punk mecca into a fashion boutique and an airport restaurant.  Grab your leather jacket, because we're diving into the birthplace of rebellion, the chaos inside those peeling walls, and how a little club with a country name rewrote rock's rulebook. This is CBGB, unfiltered. Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. (Bad Brains) and many more. Join Spike and myself as we talk about his remarkable career so far, we find out why he moved from his native Holyhead to Peterborough where he know lives with his family. We chat about his early years in North Wales and the suprisingly vibrant punk scene that was happening in the area at the time that ignited his love of this genre of music. Spike tells us about joining Memoriam, a midlands based Death metal band and how it took quite a bit of thinking about before finally commiting to the band as this was a genre he had played very little of before. It was only right to talk about the late great Robin Guy, Robin was a great friend of Spikes and they used to cover eachothers gigs quite frequently. Robin was a great former guest on the podcast, a lovely man and a great drummer, if felt right to pay tribute to Robin with Spike. We had such an enjoyable chat, Spike is such a great and very popular guy, it was a pleasure to have such a great natter with him! Cheers spike. check out his website - www.spiketsmith.com

To help us explore Black culture in hard rock, punk and metal, we have enlisted one who knows this category inside and out.

Don't do it! Playlist Megadeth - In my darkest hour (So far, so good…so what!, 1988) The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years (1988) - IMDb “Documentary showcase, what life was like for the music artists living during the Los Angeles Heavy Metal scene in the mid and late 1980s.” Bad Brains - The Regulator (Bad Brains, 1982) Bad Brains: A Band in DC (2012) - IMDb “Bad Brains are one of the most important and influential American bands still working today. They melded punk and reggae into an innovative style that has yet to be copied. Their impact and influence can be heard in groups like Beastie Boys, No Doubt, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction and countless more. Despite the troubles of an eccentric front man they have stayed together for 30 years without ever reaching the level of success so many think they deserve. In this interview on Seeing Them Live, the guest, Ben Apatow, shares his insights and experiences in the music world. Ben is an accomplished author of the books Metallica, the $24.95 Book, and Body Count, part of the Bloomsbury 33 1/3 series. Ben's writing has been featured in various well-known music publications. He begins by recounting his first concert experience, seeing Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead at RFK Stadium in 1995, a formative event for him. He also highlights memorable concerts, including two Prince shows at Madison Square Garden, citing Prince as an extraordinary performer. However, he also shares his most disappointing concerts: Bad Brains and a recent Jane's Addiction show, noting specific incidences that led to his disappointment with these performances. The Jane's Addiction show, in particular, was tarnished by Perry Farrell's visible struggle, which affected the overall performance quality and led to tour cancellations shortly after.Transitioning to his literary works, Ben discusses the events around his book Body Count, which covers Body Count's controversial debut album featuring the song Cop Killer. The song elicited backlash from police unions, the Senate, and even the President, leading to its removal from the album after only three months. Ben details the dichotomy of the intense reactions to Cop Killer and the larger issues of censorship and societal fears in the early 1990s.Regarding his book on Metallica, Ben describes its comprehensive coverage, spanning the band's history, individual members, concerts, and broader cultural impact. He also delves into the influence of punk and metal within their music. Ben emphasizes the significance of word-of-mouth and live performances in Metallica's rise to popularity and reflects on how their approach to live shows continues to engage and expand their fan base. He concludes by expressing his enthusiasm for writing these books and outlining potential future projects, including collaborations and new biographies.BANDS: AC/DC, Bob Dylan, Body Count, Fiona Apple, Fishbone, Iron Maiden, Living Color, Metallica, Patti Smith, Prince, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, The Ramones, Ultimate Classic Rock, Velvet Underground.VENUES:RFK Stadium, Madison Square Garden, Alpine Valley, Navy Pier, Salt Shed, Lollapalooza. In this explosive episode of *The Metal Maniacs Podcast*, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd are joined by two heavy hitters from the scene: Luke Forton, the vocalist of **Reinventing Yesterday**, and Jeremy McClarey, the frontman of **Snake Out**. Together, they introduce Jay and Modd to the world of **hardcore**, diving deep into the extreme metal subgenre that has shaped everything from metal to punk and beyond. **Hardcore 101: The Roots and Rivalries** What comes to mind when you think of "metal"? Heavy riffs, brutal breakdowns, and epic solos? Now, what about "hardcore"? Luke and Jeremy help us explore the defining characteristics of hardcore as a genre, its connection to punk, and how it differs—and sometimes overlaps—with metal. We dig into the age-old debates: *Why can't we all just get along?* **The Evolution: From Punk to Metal** Hardcore's journey through music history is rich with influence. From its roots in 1980s punk with bands like **Black Flag**, **Minor Threat**, and **Bad Brains**, hardcore began blending into the metal world, influencing a wide range of extreme genres. We discuss how crossover thrash emerged, with bands like **Slayer**, **Metallica**, and **Anthrax** adopting hardcore and punk influences to shape the sound of thrash metal in the 80s. As hardcore evolved, it birthed new subgenres like **metallic hardcore** in the late 80s and 90s. Bands such as **Cro-Mags**, **Biohazard**, **Integrity**, **Madball**, and **Hatebreed** became central figures in the hardcore scene, mixing thrash, hardcore, and metal to create a new wave of aggressive, high-energy music. **The Blurring Lines of Metalcore** The line between hardcore and metalcore has always been fuzzy. As metalcore rose in popularity, many fans and critics argued about what truly defines the genre. **Proto-Deathcore and Beyond** As hardcore and metalcore evolved, so did the more extreme subgenres. **Deathcore** emerged as a brutal hybrid of death metal and hardcore, and while it's often debated whether it retains any hardcore essence, the influence of hardcore can still be traced in bands like **The Acacia Strain**, **The Red Chord**, and **Bleeding Through**. However, hardcore's reach didn't stop with metalcore or deathcore—it also inspired the rise of extreme bands in various niches of the underground scene. Luke and Jeremy give us their personal recommendations of modern hardcore bands, such as **Drain**, **Ingrown**, **Knocked Loose**, and **Candy**, discussing how they continue to carry the torch for hardcore with fresh, innovative sounds. **The Sound of Hardcore Today** In the second half of the episode, we dive into the current state of hardcore, where bands like **Twitching Tongues**, **God's Hate**, **Gates to Hell**, and **Fuming Mouth** have brought the genre to new heights. Whether it's the blistering speed of **Enforced** or the pummeling grooves of **Pain of Truth**, hardcore continues to push the boundaries of aggression, intensity, and emotion. Jay and Modd get to react to snippets of some of these bands' latest tracks, which leads to some fascinating conversations about the evolving sounds of hardcore and how the genre is both changing and staying true to its roots. The energy and raw emotion in these tracks are undeniable, and you'll hear firsthand the passion both our guests and hosts bring to the discussion. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the deep roots of extreme music. Whether you're a seasoned hardcore fan or new to the scene, Luke and Jeremy break down everything you need to know about the genre's evolution, its influence on modern metal, and how it's still thriving today. So, tune in and get ready for an unforgettable ride through the world of hardcore! **Don't forget to subscribe** to *The Metal Maniacs Presents: The Last Week on Earth*, where we bring you all the latest and greatest in metal, hardcore, and beyond! In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. On May 24, 1996, Sublime played their last show at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma. No one knew it'd be their final concert. But no one knew at the time, either, that singer Bradley Nowell would pass away the next morning at a motel in San Francisco. Sublime would go on to sell over 17 million records, and for obvious reasons, that final show in Petaluma has attained mythic status. An audio bootleg exists; legal issues over still-unreleased video footage have continued for years; and snippets of people's memories can still be overheard at parties in and around Petaluma. But only 900 or so people witnessed Nowell's final performance. The rest of Sublime's millions of fans always want to know: what was it like? While still nowhere near the sound of classic Sabbath, “Tyr" is the closest we've been since "The Mob Rules." If nothing else, the 1990 sound of the band was unique from what other guitar driven bands were doing at the time. It's not the Pixies or Jane's Addiction or Bad Brains or Alice in Chains and it's certainly not Cannibal Corpse, each of whom released significant records that same year. What it is is a band that sounds fully in belief of the music that they're making and along with Bathory's “Hammerheart,” also released in 1990, it could be argued that “Tyr” helps invent Viking Metal (for better or worse).   Recommended Listening:    Khrunagbin “Hasta El Cielo” https://open.spotify.com/album/0CCC2ksZMrvRVXf9F1NADZ?si=WUk4n6zbRC6au_ANIsYQnQ   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ MidCityThree:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=4UnUthYNR4K9FMv2dqFOVw   instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill

Doni Blair is the kind of lifer that isn't content to just sit around between tours and wait for the call. He likes to get his ass kicked. Literally. You probably know him as the bass playing dynamo in The Toadies — but an ever growing number of people know Doni as a practitioner, instructor, and advocate of martial arts training. In fact, he wrote an amazing and REALLY funny book about becoming a black belt in his 40s called EVEN IF IT KILLS ME — and you should totally buy it and read it. But even with all that, all Scott really wants to talk about is Doni's old band Hagfish. So on this episode we do that — BUT we also talk about Willie Nelson, Judo, Doni's brother Zach, having a DJ for a dad, mailbox baseball, mooning, straight-edge, a new way to say Zoetrope(?!?), first tours with Bad Brains, Only Crime, learning to play bass with a pick to get the Toadies gig, recording their new album with Steve Albini, and —thanks to Doni— the long awaited Iron Maiden round of WHAT'S THE BEST?!? is NOT going to go the way Gabe had planned.

The Making of OUT OF STEP by Minor Threat - featuring Ian MacKaye

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2024 92:07

In celebration of the recently unearthed Out of Step Outtakes, we take a detailed look at the making of the original record. After Minor Threat formed in Washington D.C. in 1980, they began to find an audience in the American punk scene. Their first two seven-inch records contained songs written by Ian MacKaye, such as “Straight Edge” and “Out of Step,” which kickstarted the straight edge movement within punk. By 1982, guitarist Lyle Preslar had left for college and Minor Threat temporarily broke up. After speaking with H.R. of the Bad Brains, MacKaye was convinced of the impact the band was having and considered reforming. At that point, Preslar agreed to quit college and rejoin the band. Despite accusations of the band selling out by reforming, Minor Threat began playing shows in their hometown and embarked on a cross-country tour. Brian Baker decided to switch from bass to second guitar so they asked Steve Hansgen to join as the new bassist. In early 1983, they returned to Don Zientara's Inner Ear Studio to begin recording as a five-piece. Out of Step was eventually released in the spring of 1983. In this episode, Ian MacKaye describes this pivotal moment in the band's history when they decided to reunite and change their sound by adding a fifth member. Though they faced backlash about reuniting from their hometown crowd, this fueled the next batch of songs they would write as a band. MacKaye discusses how most of his lyrics on this record reflect the gossip and backstabbing that was prevalent in their scene at the time. In addition, tension within the band was rising over MacKaye's lyrics and their overall musical direction. The new version of the title track reflected their differences as Jeff Nelson convinced MacKaye to include a spoken word interlude that explained how the straight edge lyrics were personal to MacKaye and didn't represent the band's views. From Minor Threat's first 12-inch to a joke song about selling out to recording vocals live for the first time to the benefits of an expensive strobe tuner to hearing the call of punk to self-define, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
