It's the episode you've all been asking for....Alcohol and the menopause. Why does it make you feel like drinking? Will a glass of red help your symptoms? If I am sober will the menopause be easier? So many questions and only two uneducated buffoons to answer them! It's not a topic that Vic and Hame know much about so they had to learn on the go and bring in an expert - Dr Sally Hunt from the University of Newcastle explains why women feel the need to drown out the side effects of 'the change' and how preparing yourself mentally, and quitting drinking before menopause will mean you will cope much better. Today is all about the ladies but don't switch off completely gents! We also have a little chat about the male menopause (yes, there is such a thing!) and why it's so important for partners to understand what's going on and how to approach this, strangely taboo, topic. This week on Wellbeing, we speak with Dr Sally Hunt from the University of Newcastle, Australia. Dr Hunt is a Clinical psychologist having worked in both a clinical and research capacity in the field for almost 20 years. Sally completed her PhD in 2015 which focused on the connections between mental health struggles and alcohol use disorders. Her post-doctoral research has been focused on problematic alcohol use by women, and developing better tools and interventions to assist with this demographic. In this episode, Dr Hunt talks about how alcohol can affect and - in extreme circumstances - alter the brain, how drinking can affect an adolescent's brain development, the culture towards alcohol in society, the connections between mental health struggles and alcohol, and the phycological reasons why people love alcohol. “(Alcohol) affects all of the brain. When you are intoxicated with alcohol, your brain is swimming in it.” - Dr Sally Hunt on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we speak to Dr Narelle Eather about fitness and movement. Sally Hunt came on the scene after finding out that a evangelical Christian group called Thrive was teaching sex education in schools around her St. Louis, Missouri home. She joined a protest and has seen positive results. From that she turned her attention to a giant (and I mean giant) In God We Trust sign put up at a city council chamber. The mayor had her escorted out by police and because of that she got the attention of Fox News and absolutely killed it on the Laura Ingraham Angle show. We talk about all that and how to deal with the wave of negativity you get from being an out atheist, and sometimes it’s from fellow atheists. Sex Education brings up fond memories for most of us. Long days of sitting in class, staring down the barrel of the copious photos of mangled and infected genitals. Countless hours of practicing how to avoid talking to girls by staring at our feet. An endless journey of blushing and uncomfortable giggles every time your instructor says "penis". Ahh, memories... What could make that even better? Maybe Cheeze-It's induced shame after spitting mouthfulls of crackers into a cup of water as a metaphor for unprotected sex... Wait, what? Did they really pass a cup around and have the students all spit into? You just have to listen to learn more about religious groups like Thrive that teach for "Free" in public schools. The role of British universities as places for building and nurturing multicultural communities might be at a risk as a result of Brexit. Canada has recently overtaken the UK as the most desirable destination for EU students, and the number of those applying for early deadline courses via UCAS has dropped by nine per cent. And it doesn’t look much different for the teaching staff as the University and College Union found that 76 per cent of EU academics working in Britain are now more likely to consider leaving the country and a third of them already know of fellow academics leaving the UK. To get some insight into how universities, their students and staff are feeling about this we brought on Sally Hunt, who’s the general secretary of the UCU. We discuss what a multicultural campus offers its students and what is needed, especially from Theresa May in her government, to sustain this. #Podcast #Brexit #BrexitPodcast #Referendum #EUReferendum #VoteLeave #VoteRemain #VoteIn #EU #UK #TimHeming #JenniferHahn #News #Politics #highereducation #university #college #sallyhunt #universityandcollegeunion #ucu #erasmus #students #student #internationalstudent #semesterabroad #academics #teachingstaff #lecturers #researchstudents #phd #master #bachelor
