In this Movie Show Digital Extra, T.C. Christensen, writer/director/cinematographer for the new film Raising the Bar: The Alma Richards Story joins Andy Farnsworth and guest co-host KellieAnn Halvorsen to talk about the movie, including why this story is so personal for him, which parts of the story happened exactly as depicted in the film, and how he was able to recreate that specific time period.  Christensen's film tells the story of the first-ever Olympic gold medalist from Utah, Alma Richards. Hailing from the tiny town of Parowan, UT in the early 1900's, young Alma Richards can't quite figure out what he wants to do with his life.  When he discovers he excels at track and field, especially high jumping thanks to his days growing up on the farm, Richards begins a journey that will take him to Salt Lake City, Chicago and eventually Stockholm, Sweden for the 1912 Olympics. Along the way he crosses paths with some of the biggest sports names from the early 20th Century, including Amos Alonzo Stagg and Jim Thorpe. Raising the Bar: The Alma Richards Story, in theaters starting Apr. 24th, stars Paul Wuthrich, Ali Durham, Nick Matthews, Walter Platz, Sandy Hackett, Bryce Bishop, Anthony Garcia, Skyler M. Day, Pamela Beheshti and Paul Cartwright.  Directed by T.C. Christensen. Listen to The Movie Show with Andy Farnsworth and Steve Salles on Fridays from 11am to 1pm on 102.7 FM & 1160 AM in Salt Lake City, streaming on kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSL NewsRadio App. Follow the show on Facebook at @TheMovieShow and join The Movie Show Club for exclusive perks! This week in the Flamingo Lounge, it's a family affair with father and son Richard and Richie Derwald. Recorded on February 25, 2024. Richard "Dixie Dee" Derwald, a musician, composer, vocalist, and recording artist, has been active in the music industry since 1957. His career began amidst the explosion of rock and roll, a genre he passionately pursued.  During high school, Richard balanced musical ambitions with aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler. He played upright bass and played on extended gigs at the Knickerbocker Lounge located on the Niagara St. corner of Arthur and then at the Capri Lounge also on Niagara St. Simultaneously, he trained at the YMCA, befriending wrestler Steve Stanlee (Mr. America), who mentored him both in the gym and on the mat.  This chance encounter led to a wrestling opportunity in Rochester, where promoter Pedro Martinez offered Richard regular bookings.  This propelled him toward his wrestling goal, leading him to leave the band and dedicate himself to the squared circle. Richie Derwald, a versatile performer, has consistently reinvented himself throughout his career. Beginning with country music tributes in local clubs, he then explored rock with The Memphis Flames, embracing a glam rock persona. The Nightwing Showband era saw him tackling diverse genres, from Las Vegas tributes to light jazz, culminating in opera training and performances at upscale venues. After a Las Vegas residency, Richie created his critically acclaimed "Live from Las Vegas" show, touring with Sandy Hackett's showcase. A subsequent stint with Whitestar Tours showcased his tribute artistry, alongside his wife Debbie. The pandemic halted his touring, but Richie channeled his energy into "Comfort Through Creativity," promoting art's mental health benefits. His original song "Changes" received acclaim, leading to a video series addressing mental fitness. Overcoming a stutter, Richie now speaks publicly about his personal struggles with depression, using performance and humor to inspire hope. Dr. Katherine Ansuini calls him the "Poster Child for Experiential Learning." Today, Richie partners with Nels Ross in "The Up Guys," delivering inspirational presentations blending Ted Talks and "America's Got Talent" elements.

The Good, The Bad, and The Sequel

This week we are discussing "Robocop 3", which is the polar opposite of the first 2 films. This movie is very tame because of its cartoon and toyline that was targeting kids, so this movie barely had any blood, but it was still fun to discuss. We had a friend of the show Jerry Lou stop by with his Robocop expertise to break it all down. We discussed the odd plot, Roboninjas, the cast full of familiar faces, Rip Torn being Rip Torn, and lots more. This a video review that you can watch at sequelsonly.com/Robocop3 The next sequel we are reviewing is “Cannonball Run II" which has Burt Reynolds, Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, the voice of "Munchie" Dom Deluise, plus many more, and a cameo by next week's guest Sandy Hackett, son of comedic legend Buddy Hackett. Sandy talked about growing up with a legendary comedian as his dad, his video short called "My Buddy!" bout his father, his Rat Pack show, his acting career, comedy, and lots more. Sandy does a flawless impression of his dad and it was a blast. My guest in this episode is Sandy Hackett. Yes the son of Buddy Hackett. I asked him if being the son of such a famous person make life easier or harder for him. However, before he answered the question, he let me know that I had asked the wrong question, and then he shared his journey in life - full of shifts. He shared bits of wisdom from his dad - but the one word answer Buddy gave to Sandy in the midst of a major shift in Sandy’s life is my favorite, and I have used it more than once on myself since I heard it. Nope, not sharing it now, you will need to listen. Most of all Sandy stresses that true success can only be found by following your heart. I know he will inspire you to follow yours.

Nowadays if you're the offspring of an iconic celebrity, you can get work regardless of your talent as the subject of a reality TV show or by providing vacuous interviews on red carpets. But some of those who were born famous actually spend their lives trying to both make their own mark on the world and protect the legacies of their parents. In this episode, we'll hear from two men who have done just that, Louis Prima Jr and Sandy Hackett. Prima continues to try to rescue the dying Vegas lounge act that his father made so great and Hackett is a comic and musician in his own right whose Rat Pack production at the Sahara bounces off of his own family history with Frank, Dino, Sammy and Joey. Both have struggled with and enjoyed perks from their famous names and both speak openly about that mixed blessing as well as their fascinating Vegas histories. In Banter: The Aria buffet, Phil Ruffin's Bellagio play, the Build It Bigger on CityCenter, Forbes on Adelson and Ruffin, the MGM Mirage Xmas Day outage and more.Web: TheStripPodcast.ComE-mail: TheStripPodcast@aol.comTwitter: @TheStripPodcastBlog: VegasHappensHere.comVoicemail: 206-424-4737
