Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 25, 2025. Ben Affleck returns as the assassin/accountant on the autism spectrum in “The Accountant 2,” and this follow-up features great chemistry with Jon Bernthal as his brother. Also in theaters is a locally made film about Utah's first Olympic gold medalist, titled “Raising the Bar: The Alma Richards Story,” by our Movie Show friend, Writer/Director T.C. Christensen. This is a faith-filled family film with a sprinkling of patriotism for extra measure and an all-over good sports story. On streaming, there's a new Tom Hardy movie on Netflix called “Havoc” with lots of bullets and lots of mess. And Star Wars fans are rejoicing as the second and final season of “Andor” hits DisneyPlus. Don't miss out on this tie-in to the 2016 movie “Rogue One,” as the lore of that galaxy far, far away is everything fans like Andy could hope for: nuanced, with plenty of intrigue, visually immersive, and even heartbreaking at times. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. For decades, David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz were Australian film reviewing royalty, having built up a loyal following with their weekly show on SBS, The Movie Show. The 90s and early 00s was the peak of David & Margaret's influence over Australian audiences. What they recommended, people would head out and go and see. Both David and Margaret are staunch supporters of cinema, becoming advocates for all kinds of cinema and decrying the impacts of censorship. While both have played roles in the way that film censorship in Australia has impacted what we see, it's Margaret's role with the notorious Larry Clarke film, Ken Park, which saw her make headlines after she put on an ‘illegal' screening of the film after it received a ‘Refused Classification' status, aka, the film being banned from Australia. That pivotal moment in Australian film criticism history is what sits at the heart of Zachary Ruane and Alexei Toliopoulos' comedy show Refused Classification, which is currently making its way around Australian comedy festivals, having recently played at the Adelaide Fringe, with shows to be held in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth on the horizon. The show sees Zachary don a salt and pepper wig as David, while Alexei somehow manages to imbue himself with the spirit of Margaret Pomeranz with her trademark golden locks. Together, they retell this point in Aussie cinema history through the form of comedy show, documentary and verbatim theatre. In the following interview, Zachary and Alexei talk about how the show came about, their experiences watching Ken Park, how Simon Miraudo's brilliant Book of the Banned (buy it here) helped inform the show, and Alexei goes deep on his personal connection with the At the Movies board game.I should add too, if you're interested in reading the transcripts of David and Margaret's work on both The Movie Show and At the Movies, then check out this Letterboxd account which has logged all of them over the years. And keep in mind that the shows are all available on SBS On Demand too, if you want that real nostalgia trip.To keep up to date on where the show is playing, make sure to follow both Zachary and Alexei on Instagram. We are a completely independent and ad free website that lives on the support of listeners and readers just like you. Every career has to start somewhere, and Academy Award winners have to pay their dues like anyone else. Sometimes you kick things off punching a stuntman through a glass wall, and sometimes you start out chasing a character actor behind a high school gymnasium. February 21, 2025 ~ Greg Russell from Movie Show Plus reviews "The Monkey" in theaters and "A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story" on Britbox.
The Buddies dive into All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whittaker. A story that manages to combine elements of Joe Dirt, Shawshank Redemption, Where the Crawdad Sing, and Forrest Gump into one surprisingly coherent narrative. Or more simply put, a tale about a pirate turning into a great painter. The book had the Buddies debating proper broccoli-roasting techniques, questioning why Ivy League acceptances are treated like community college admissions in small-town Missouri, and wondering if maybe eyepatch technology is due for an upgrade after several centuries. So, grab your sketchbook (preferably filled with portraits of missing persons), double-check that your doors are locked, and join the Buddies as they navigate through this heart-wrenching story. The Buddies enter Britain and the world of King Arthur in The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell. If you're sophisticated, you'll know this as an "Arthurian tale" or a retelling of the classic animated TV show King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. The book had the Buddies debating the merits of LSD-powered sorcery, comparing bar game courage to battlefield bravery, and wondering if maybe everyone in the Dark Ages just had terrible eyesight. So, grab your sword (named or unnamed), pour yourself some liquid courage, and join the Buddies as they battle through Book 1 of the Warlord Chronicles. As we wrap up the year, we've got something a little different in store for you today. We've invited Zach Davis, Bill Turnbull, and McKay Coppins on for a conversation about two Hollywood Films that are making waves. Zach is the executive director of Faith Matters, Bill is one of the founders, and you may remember Mckay from his previous episodes. He's a New York Times bestselling author and staff writer at the Atlantic. They're joining us today for a deep dive into two films-- Heretic, the dark thriller about two sister missionaries lured into a man's home by his feigned interest in their faith and become trapped in his sinister and malevolent plot -- and Conclave, which takes us into the heart of the Vatican during the election of a new pope. It's a gripping drama filled with politics, power, and ultimately, divine mystery. Both films explore profound questions about belief, choice, and the human longing for transcendence. In an era often skeptical of organized religion, these movies take faith seriously and, in their own ways, seem to reaffirm the relevance—and beauty—of spiritual truth. This was a rich and thought-provoking conversation, so whether you've seen these movies or not, the questions explored in this episode and the insights are going to spark deep, and valuable reflection. With that, let's jump into the discussion!
