TVC 689.3: Ed welcomes back singer, actress, and philanthropist Ruta Lee (High Rollers, Witness for the Prosecution, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Consider Your Ass Kissed). Ruta will celebrate her ninetieth birthday this coming Friday, May 30 with an evening of song and stories at the Debbie Reynolds Main Stage at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. Proceeds for the evening will support The Thalians, the charitable organization to which Ruta has dedicated much of her life over the past sixty years, and which to date has raised has raised more than $50 million for mental health related causes. (NOTE: Though Ruta's performance on May 30 has sold out, you can still make a donation to The Thalians in any amount by going to Thalians.org.) Among other topics this segment, Ruta shares a few memories of co-starring opposite Patrick O'Neal in “A Short Drink from a Certain Fountain,” an episode of The Twilight Zone from 1963 that Ruta considers one of her all-time favorite television performances, not only because of the character she played, but for the opportunity to perform the words of the great Rod Serling. Ruta also tells Ed why her experience filming Sergeants 3 (1962) with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop—and hanging out with the Rat Pack in general—ranks as her “favorite time in life.”
NOTHIN' COMES EASY: The Life of Rodney Dangerfield (April 29, 2025) is the first biography of the "bug-eyed, sweaty, herky-jerky, tie-pulling comedian with the doleful countenance." Dangerfield's indelible beat-down image was played for laughs, but there were sad truths behind his sad-sack persona. TV writer Michael Seth Starr has crafted an immensely entertaining bio of the comedian's slog up the show business ladder. Ten years as a C-level stand-up comedian, he quit the business to sell aluminum siding and paint to keep the lights on. Then he went back to the clubs under an entirely new name, from Jack Roy to Rodney Dangerfield. A career-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe age of forty-five would be the lucky break, opening doors to television, movies, and comic fame at last. His catch phrase, "I don't get no respect," underscored his circuitous rise to the top after years of setbacks and grit. "What stood out for me, in authoring this book," writes Starr, '"was Dangerfield's perseverance in the face of such overwhelming odds. I was impressed at how he launched a second comedy career as a man already in his forties and out of the game for a decade. He never abandoned his undeniable urge to get back in the game and to share his seemingly unending reservoir of magical one-liners." At the beginning of his comeback, he began writing jokes for comedians like Jackie Mason and Joey Bishop, in the days before the "no respect" persona was solidified. He worked agentless, making his own deals. And it took him a solid five years to clinch his now celebrated debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. It took another few years of hustling on the circuit before he landed on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, which opened a wealth of doors in Hollywood. Dangerfield's comedy style - a self-mocking angst, the comedy of the perpetual loser - was endearing and universal. He was the schlubby Everyman snubbed by life, finally making it big. Soon Dangerfield would be leaving his mark in films, most famously in Caddyshack and Back to School. He was rebuffed in later years by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which refused him membership. But Dangerfield had already cemented his place in comedy history as a writer and performer. When he died in 2004, his death made international headlines. Among his pallbearers were George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Larry David, Andrew Dice Clay, Jon Lovitz, and Carl Reiner. The book closes with a highly engaging chapter, "Riffs on Rodney," with remembrances of the comic from his peers including Jay Leno, Rita Rudney, Bob Nelson, Robert Wuhl, and Pauly Shore. Grab your best duds, we're hopping in the Time Machine for Las Vegas in the 1950s to catch up with The Rat Pack -- or at least the comic relief -- in the form of Joey Bishop who was a presence in Vegas showrooms, in movies, and on television well into the 1980s. A product of the New York nightclub scene, where Frank Sinatra caught and liked his act, Joey was Frank's opener for years and when Sinatra took the helm of the Rat Pack, he brought Joey along for the ride. That association would end in the early 1960s, but Joey remained a celebrity and hosted his own ABC late night talk show in the mid-60s. A deadpan comic, Joey later became a frequent game show panelist, as well as a talk show guest host. Frank Sinatra's death in 1998 left Joey as the Rat Pack's "last man standing" -- as we always say, comedy keeps you young! Find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Bishop? In the late 1990s snarky record fans started discovering records with celebrities not known for their singing having at it nonetheless. Joey weighs in here with Your Cheatin' Heart from his 1968 album Joey Bishop Sings Country and Western. It even won an award from the Academy of Country Music. https://youtu.be/_ghzOy3X1uE?si=fDIdIQWd-E07JjX8 Here's a nice sample of Joey's standup comedy from an appearance on the Dinah Shore Show back in 1960, when the Rat Pack still ruled. https://youtu.be/VR2j8nDwNbs?si=PW8wboAyjoLHz55o Joey's 1967 late night ABC talk show didn't last long, but it's a great period piece and a chance to see his co-host -- a very young Regis Philbin. The "Nehru jacket" bit we excerpted is in the first few minutes, but this whole clip is great including a visit from Sammy Davis Jr. https://youtu.be/sM7Fzz0qjuM?si=svjee052G_5QHU4A As with so many 50s/60s starts, in the 1970s Joey found his footing as a reliable game show panelist -- here Joey plays a bit of the Match Game. His bit is about 12:15 in, but the whole thing is a blast of 1976 nostalgia. https://youtu.be/Ad7IENuxZZw?si=rn6_XdQ-2UWprQd8

We're talking about 50 years of living well with type 1 diabetes, alcohol's effects on blood sugars, sexual wellness, and the Spare A Rose, Save A Child campaign with musical inspiration from Dean Martin. Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti and was later nicknamed "The King of Cool." His big break while performing as a duo with comedian Jerry Lewis, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes later in life at the age of 71. After the two entertainers split in 1956, Dean Martin pursued a solo career. He established himself as a singer, movie, and television star. Along with the other members of the infamous "Rat Pack", Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis, Jr., he became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas. With his dark good looks, smooth voice, hilarious one-liners, and ever-present rocks glass, Dean Martin was a walking, talking, singing advertisement for cocktail parties. Guests: Fran Carpentier, Mama Rose Marie, Lynne Steger and Sex Therapist Janis Roszler PhD, CDCES. Throughout this podcast, we will be featuring music from The Essential Dean Martin album courtesy of SONY Music.

Authors Lon Davis and Richard Lertzman discuss their newest book, “Deconstructing The Rat Pack:Joey, The Mob and The Summit”. Peter Sheridan, London Daily Express I T'S BEEN 60 years since film classic Ocean's 11 first propelled the Rat Pack's rakish cocktail-hour swagger and perpetual partying into a cultural phenomenon. Their free-wheeling streetwise machismo embodied Sixties Mob-run Las Vegas with a penthouse suite-style that endures in culture, fashion and music to this day. Frank Sinatra was the Rat Pack's chairman of the board, with his inseparable friends and drinking buddies crooner Dean Martin, entertainer Sammy Davis Jr, British actor Peter Lawford, and comedian Joey Bishop, who boozed, brawled and womanised together. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support

RAT PACK A NEW BOOK REVEALS HOW THE GROUP CAME TOGETHER AND BECAME LEGENDARY “We're just the cocktail of the moment.” —Dean Martin You think you know the Rat Pack? Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford collectively have been called by that moniker. “They were friends through business.” It was the screenplay for 1960's Ocean's 11 that united the five. “They came up with a plan to, during the day, shoot the film in Las Vegas, and at night do a show,” Lertzman explains. And while the mythology of the Rat Pack suggests that the boys were partying all night, it wasn't exactly like that. “These guys were actually in their 40s, had kids and were hardly the swingers that they were portrayed as on-screen,” he says. END OF AN ERA? You might think that the party has been going on for 60 years, but it turns out that, like the Kennedys and Camelot, the group's heyday only existed for a brief shining moment “This whole Rat Pack era only really lasted a year,” says Richard Lertz- man, whose new book Deconstructing the Rat Pack: Joey, the Mob, and the Summit, comes out Oct. 5. “They were at the height of the entertainment world,” he tells Closer, “but it only lasted through 1960.” The idea for the group began as part of a marketing plan for the Sands Ho- tel in Las Vegas, of which Frank owned a small percentage, says Lertzman, add- ing that it was an attempt to “put Vegas on the map.” And while the entertainers all knew each other, “these guys did not hang out. They were friends, but they were Business partners Still, the few weeks in 1960 they spent filming and performing solidified a leg- end. For a moment in time, there was no bigger act than the Rat Pack. “In 1960, ev- erything clicked. It is an era onto itself,” Lertzman explains. “It still resonates with many people today who want to go back and live in that time of swingers” Want to interview the authors? New Book. How the Mob turned Las Vegas into a world destination creating The Rat Pack-Sixty Years Ago. “Deconstructing The Rat Pack: Joey, The Mob and The Summit” Sixty years ago, in February of 1960, a carefully designed event was unveiled in Las Vegas, Nevada. Titled “The Summit” the spectacular would last over three weeks and would include the greatest entertainment icons of that era. Led by “The Chairman of the Board” Frank Sinatra it included his “pals” Dean Martin, Sammy Davis,Jr. , Joey Bishop and Kennedy brother-in-law Peter Lawford. Now a new book, Deconstructing The Rat Pack: Joey, The Mob and The Summit which debuts later this month, exclusively unveils how an intense, brilliant blueprint developed by the mob bosses of Las Vegas along with their high paid publicists would be developed to place Las Vegas on the world map. For over 20 days, Las Vegas became the epicenter of the world. All eyes were on the party in Sin City that was anchored at The Sands Hotel and reverberated though-out the city. While the shenanigans-occurred during the night, during the day the group, which became known as The Rat Pack, was shooting a major motion picture from Warner Brothers called Ocean's Eleven that would debuted in August 1960. And for three days of the Summit, the group would welcome a sixth member, Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy which was carefully coordinated between his brother-in- law Peter Lawford and his father,Joe Kennedy. The event would usher in the swinging sixties and the era of Camelot until the bubble was burst on that fateful day in November of 1963. The book featured explosive new stories about The Rat Pack, The Mob and how a mediocre comic named Joey Bishop became a star with the help of his racketeer pals. Exclusive interviews with the infamous mob bosses of Vegas including Moe Dalitz, Carl Cohen, Mickey Cohen, Billy Weinberger and others tell the real background how the mob carefully used Sinatra and friends to make Las Vegas a world destination More at our free blog https://thelifeandtimesofhollywood.com/new-book-how-the-mob-turned-las-vegas-into-a-world-destination-creating-the-rat-pack-sixty-years-ago-deconstructing-the-rat-pack-joey-the-mob-and-the-summit/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support
