On our radar this week… Dozing Donald woke up from his nap long enough to shout out an 18-minute campaign speech, laden with lies and blaming everything on Joe Biden. It was the centerpiece of a truly horrific week politically for Trump and Republicans. The ACA tax credits are going, going and nearly gone … and with them, Republican prospects for the 2026 midterm elections. Adding to the political challenges to the GOP: Donald Trump's massively offensive responses to two mass shootings, and the horrific murders of Rob and Michele Reiner. The chorus of one-time MAGA acolytes breaking with Trump is growing louder … and his shouted 19-minute televised falsehood-laden campaign speech didn't help, a speech Jimmy Kimmel labeled “a liar-side chat”. Also this week: The Michigan Legislature has concluded the 2025 session and setting an unenviable record in the process: not counting the years when the Legislature only met in even-number years, it was the least productive legislative session in history. The record up until this year was 1842 when the Gov. John S. Barry signed 90 public acts. The 2025 session of the 103rd Legislature is estimated to pass around 70. The unprecedented slashing of the state's budget by House Speaker Matt Hall is drawing bipartisan backlash … and creating pain for Republicans across the state. Two top aides to former state House Speaker Lee Chatfield are sentenced for corruption, agreeing to testify against Chatfield … and also accusing Chatfield of raping one of them. Another special election, and another Democratic over-performance. Democrat Gary Clemons scored a landslide victory in a special election for the Kentucky Senate on Tuesday night, demolishing Republican Calvin Leach by a 72-25 margin. That's a full 20 points better than Kamala Harris' margin in 2024 and 18-points better than Joe BIden in 2020. We now know both more and less about pythons in Peru – thanks to a 10-minute rambling, fictitious fantasy by America's Poster Child for “weaving.” His hate-filled response to the murders of Rob and Michele Reiner drew condemnation from all sides … including some of the most influential voices in MAGA world. In Trump-the-Man-Child News: His gilded “Presidential Wall of Fame” has been transformed into a tacky Wall of Insults … guaranteeing it will be gone when he leaves office. Trump’s hand-picked Kennedy Center board has decided to rename the cultural center the Donald J. Trump-John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts (even though Trump is allegedly still alive), giving him top billing over JFK. The Kennedy Center is named by federal law, which prohibits renaming the building without congressional approval. The price for Trump's ballroom has doubled from the original estimate, with the master contractor saying it's now going to require $400-million in billionaire largesse to finish. Looks like Trump is transforming the White House into a theme park. We’re joined by Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, the senior member of the state's Democratic delegation in Congress. The Dingell legacy, dating back to her father-in-law John Dingell Senior's first term in 1933, is the nation's healthcare program. Debbie Dingell was first elected to the House in 2015. She succeeded her late husband, John Dingell Jr, who was the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history. Her husband had succeeded his father who was first elected in 1932. There's been a Dingell in the U.S. House non-stop for 92 years. A hallmark of their service has been a proposal for a national health insurance system, first introduced by John Sr. in 1933 and re-introduced since at every Congress by the father and then the son. Last summer, Perez Hilton, the gossip blogger who rose to fame for his scoopy and sometimes vicious takes in the early 2000s, was served a subpoena by Blake Lively's legal team. Perez Hilton decided to resist the subpoena under the argument that he is a journalist who is entitled to protect his sources. Micah speaks with Joel Simon, the longtime former head of the Committee to Protect Journalist and founding director of the Newmark School's Journalism Protection Initiative, about who gets included under the umbrella of journalism and why expanding the legal framework of journalistic protections is so important in today's media landscape. We'd love to have your feedback and ideas for future episodes of Retail Unwrapped. Just text us!Big brands in the food industry face a double-edged challenge: Make snacks healthy and deliver duller colors and unfamiliar tastes. Eliminating dyes and reducing preservatives and sugar are consumer demands that are forcing food manufacturers to reformulate decades-old products that those consumers have developed taste preferences for. Join Shelley and Misty Skolnick, Co-owner of Uncle Jerry's Pretzels as they discuss how this company in rural Pennsylvania has been producing handmade, 100% natural pretzels as healthy snack options for decades. The conversation covers more than commercial food trends; it explores the challenge from consumers who demand product transparency certification that is resulting in reformulating products that transform familiar food tastes in deference to healthy ingredients. Will this movement collapse when visual appeal and familiar flavors disappear from well-loved products? The food industry is facing an existential crisis balancing wellbeing with familiarity. Unlike food giants scrambling to re-engineer their formulations at scale, smaller producer Uncle Jerry's Pretzels figured this out 40 years ago.Special Guest: Misty Skolnick, Co-Owner of Uncle Jerry's PretzelsFor more strategic insights and compelling content, visit TheRobinReport.com, where you can read, watch, and listen to content from Robin Lewis and other retail industry experts, and be sure to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter.

The Wellington mayor went out, not really in a blaze of glory yesterday, but more a fireball of misery and bitchiness. Tory Whanau is probably the local body poster child for ineptitude. She's given her bye-bye speech. She was a shambles. She may still be back, as she is standing in the Māori ward. She seems like a person who if she wasn't in local politics, might have trouble finding work. She admitted, after it was too late, that she really should have done her homework before chasing the big mayoral job. She won because too many people stood for mayor and split the vote, so by the time you deal with the appalling turnout and split the vote several times over, you need not a lot of support to get a job you weren't even qualified for any way. But that's local body politics, isn't it, at least at national level. Whether list or electorate, a group of experienced operators give you the once over. Locally literally anyone can have a go and that, if you haven't worked it out yet, is a problem. It wasn't all her fault of course. A mayor is not a president and is but one vote. But a mayor's job shouldn't be a "funsies" party trick because you are bored or unemployable. There were the personal issues. That is another problem in the lack of vetting. Some people are basically just a shambles and she is clearly one of those. That's not a crime, we all have issues. It's just advisable not to have them on display while you are trying to run things like a city. The city is pretty much a reflection of her leadership – a mess. Infrastructurally it's an embarrassment; level one water restriction when we are barely out of autumn, a devastated CBD and angst, fury and backstabbing having been a feature of decision making. That particular trait aired yet again in her farewell speech. We seem to be in an era where quality in so many parts of life has gone by the wayside. Tory Whanau is certainly an example of that. She came, she cocked it up, she flailed and flapped about like we were her psychologists as she aired her many and varied problems, then poof! She's off! Until she wasn't. They, sadly, rarely are. But honestly, in a city of Kitts, Fowler, Belich (maybe even Wilde and Prendergast), ol' Tory is hardly one for the record books. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we will be talking to a notorious former pastor about their experience growing up inside high control religion, becoming a poster child for purity culture, being set up to take over for a large church and ultimately giving it all up, deconstructing his faith and leaving the church. If you grew up in evangelicalism, and likely even if you didn't, you're sure to be familiar with Joshua Harris, author of the wildly popular Christian dating, ahem, courting, book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. He's here to share with us about his time inside of high control religion, what opened his eyes to the unhealthy dynamics inside the church and his process of healing after leaving. It's an episode that all of our younger selves never saw coming and definitely one you won't want to miss! [00:30] The Radical Left Loves Criminals (32 minutes) MS-13 illegal immigrant criminal Kilmar Abrego Garcia is the Democrats' anti-deportation poster child, but his nefarious criminal past raises serious questions about why the Democrats are so focused on protecting due process for this man who isn't even a U.S. citizen. The radical left's heart is with criminal illegals, but even CNN admits that most of America thinks President Donald Trump's immigration policy restrictions are on the right track. Rewriting World War II history is dangerous because that history is now repeating itself.
This week in the Flamingo Lounge, it's a family affair with father and son Richard and Richie Derwald. Recorded on February 25, 2024. Richard "Dixie Dee" Derwald, a musician, composer, vocalist, and recording artist, has been active in the music industry since 1957. His career began amidst the explosion of rock and roll, a genre he passionately pursued. During high school, Richard balanced musical ambitions with aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler. He played upright bass and played on extended gigs at the Knickerbocker Lounge located on the Niagara St. corner of Arthur and then at the Capri Lounge also on Niagara St. Simultaneously, he trained at the YMCA, befriending wrestler Steve Stanlee (Mr. America), who mentored him both in the gym and on the mat. This chance encounter led to a wrestling opportunity in Rochester, where promoter Pedro Martinez offered Richard regular bookings. This propelled him toward his wrestling goal, leading him to leave the band and dedicate himself to the squared circle. Richie Derwald, a versatile performer, has consistently reinvented himself throughout his career. Beginning with country music tributes in local clubs, he then explored rock with The Memphis Flames, embracing a glam rock persona. The Nightwing Showband era saw him tackling diverse genres, from Las Vegas tributes to light jazz, culminating in opera training and performances at upscale venues. After a Las Vegas residency, Richie created his critically acclaimed "Live from Las Vegas" show, touring with Sandy Hackett's showcase. A subsequent stint with Whitestar Tours showcased his tribute artistry, alongside his wife Debbie. Hisham Awartani was visiting family in Vermont over Thanksgiving break in 2023 when he and two of his friends were shot. All three victims are of Palestinian descent and were wearing traditional Palestinian scarves when the attack happened. While his friends made full physical recoveries, 20-year-old Awartani now has to grapple with a new life that involves using a wheelchair. In this episode, producer Suzanne Gaber meets with Awartani on his last day in rehab before heading back to Brown University, where the shooting has made him a poster child for a cause that's deeply personal for him: the movement to free Palestine from Israeli occupation. Kai then speaks with William Youmans, an associate professor of Media and Public Affairs at the George Washington University, about Hisham's story and why so many people have become attached to it, revealing much about how American media has reported Palestinian narratives since Hamas' October 7th attack in Israel. Youmans also takes a look at how Palestinian-American identity in the U.S. has changed over time.
