This week we are back with part two of our mammoth session with Fr Conor McDonough OP, an exceptional Research Ireland funded PhD researcher in Classics, University of Galway. Conor tells us all about the new mendicant orders in 13th century Ireland: the Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites and Augustinians. Conor explains that these new orders were like 'networks of mass communication' and that friars are kind of like itinerant and urban monks. We hear tales of decline and reform, the Fourth Lateran Council, ethnic tensions, the encroaching black death, and attempts to establish an Irish university in the 1320s.Suggested reading and resources:Treasure Ireland Youtube series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdPbRZbumpDdJjMBmh_wlGVdx_rQVH38O- Ó Clabaigh, Colmán, ‘The Church, 1050–1460', in Brendan Smith (ed.), The Cambridge History of Ireland. 1. 600–1550 (Cambridge, 2018), 355–384- Colmán Ó Clabaigh OSB, The Friars in Ireland, 1224-1540, Dublin: Four Courts, 2011.- Yvonne McDermott, ‘Women as patrons and benefactors of the friars in medieval Connacht', Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies, vol. 8 (2019), pp. 235-266.- Edel Bhreathnach, ‘The mendicant orders and vernacular Irish learning in the late medieval period', Irish Historical Studies, vol. 37, no. 147 (2011), pp. 357-375.Regular episodes every month (on a Friday)Email: medievalirishhistory@gmail.comProducer: Tiago Veloso SilvaSupported by the Dept of Early Irish, Maynooth University & Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland.Views expressed are the speakers' own.Logo design: Matheus de Paula CostaMusic: Lexin_Music

Full Text of Readings Wednesday of the Seventh Week of Easter Lectionary: 299 The Saint of the day is Saint Bernardine of Siena Saint Bernardine of Siena's Story Most of the saints suffer great personal opposition, even persecution. Saint Bernardine of Siena, by contrast, seems more like a human dynamo who simply took on the needs of the world. He was the greatest preacher of his time, journeying across Italy, calming strife-torn cities, attacking the paganism he found rampant, attracting crowds of 30,000, following Saint Francis of Assisi's admonition to preach about “vice and virtue, punishment and glory.” Compared with Saint Paul by the pope, Saint Bernardine of Siena had a keen intuition of the needs of the time, along with solid holiness and boundless energy and joy. He accomplished all this despite having a very weak and hoarse voice, miraculously improved later because of his devotion to Mary. When he was 20, the plague was at its height in his hometown of Siena. Sometimes as many as 20 people died in one day at the hospital. Bernardine offered to run the hospital and, with the help of other young men, nursed patients there for four months. He escaped the plague, but was so exhausted that a fever confined him for several months. He spent another year caring for a beloved aunt whose parents had died when he was a child, and at her death began to fast and pray to know God's will for him. At 22, he entered the Franciscan Order and was ordained two years later. For almost a dozen years he lived in solitude and prayer, but his gifts ultimately caused him to be sent to preach. He always traveled on foot, sometimes speaking for hours in one place, then doing the same in another town. Especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Saint Bernardine of Siena devised a symbol—IHS, the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek—in Gothic letters on a blazing sun. This was to displace the superstitious symbols of the day, as well as the insignia of factions: for example, Guelphs and Ghibellines. The devotion spread, and the symbol began to appear in churches, homes and public buildings. Opposition arose from those who thought it a dangerous innovation. Three attempts were made to have the pope take action against him, but Bernardine's holiness, orthodoxy, and intelligence were evidence of his faithfulness. General of the Friars of the Strict Observance, a branch of the Franciscan Order, Saint Bernardine of Siena strongly emphasized scholarship and further study of theology and canon law. When he started there were 300 friars in the community; when he died there were 4,000. He returned to preaching the last two years of his life, dying while traveling. Reflection Another dynamic saint once said, “…I will not be a burden, for I want not what is yours, but you…. I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your sakes” (2 Corinthians 12:14). There is danger that we see only the whirlwind of activity in the Bernardines of faith—taking care of the sick, preaching, studying, administering, always driving—and forget the source of their energy. We should not say that Bernardine could have been a great contemplative if he had had the chance. He had the chance, every day, and he took it.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, is the president of Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio and is our guest on this episode. Fr. Dave grew up in a devoted Catholic family and he and his siblings were very involved in various types of sports. Fr. Dave liked the competitive nature of sports, but most appreciated the relationships that are prevalent in team sports. Looking back, he realizes how the lessons he learned in his early years in sports helped shape him for his current role. As the president of a university, Fr. Dave is a very busy man who has many responsibilities. With a full day in front of him, he finds that spending 30 to 45 minutes on a treadmill each morning before going to the office is very beneficial to his day. Fr. Dave also recently attended a Notre Dame game and is a Denver Broncos fan. He can't imagine his life without sports. Fr. Dave explains the three types of Franciscan Orders and the Third Order Regular (TOR). Although he felt called to the priesthood at a young age, Fr. Dave knew that he was not called to be a diocesan priest. He needed to be in a community, a brotherhood that supports each other. He lives with nineteen Friars and enjoys the camaraderie and the sports rivalries inherent in a group of men. Fr. Dave also explains what he likes about St. Francis who lived in the 12th to 13th century in Italy and felt called by God to “Rebuild My Church”. Fr. Dave explains some of the many assignments he had in the Order prior to his assignment as President of Franciscan University in 2019. In his current role, he talks about celebrating early morning daily Mass in a packed chapel that holds 590 people at a time when roughly 70% of “kids” stop going to church. Franciscan University also sponsors about 25 summer youth conferences across the country with approximately 60,000 young people attending. Fr. Dave discusses his collaboration with Wild Goose TV in producing a video series called My Father's Father in which he talks about experiences and discussions he had with his father that taught Fr. Dave more about Our Heavenly Father. He also collaborated with Wild Goose TV to produce a series called “Metanoia”, a Greek word that means a transformation of the heart, a spiritual conversion, which comes about through repentance. The Metanoia series was filmed in the Holy Land. Fr. Dave also talks about two video series he is involved in called “In Focus” and “In Person”. Of all the many things that encompass Fr. Dave's life, he just wants to do what God wants him to do. He hopes everything he's doing comes from his personal relationship with Jesus. Fr. Dave cannot imagine doing anything else. He hopes that his 2000 students know that “Fr. Dave is proud of me!”, like Fr. Dave's father was proud of him. Fr. Dave talks about prayer and says it's “pretty simple” and tells listeners how to have a good prayer time. Like the old Nike adage, Fr. Dave encourages listeners to “Just Do It!” In the life of a Franciscan, the word “kenosis” is important. Kenosis means “emptying” of oneself and is best described in Philippians 2:6-8. While prayer may be simple, kenosis takes practice (like hitting a baseball). Fr Dave talks about how he experiences kenosis. Fr. Dave ends by emphatically stating that young people are good, and they are not the future of the Church as he has heard some people say, young people are part of the Church today! He invites listeners to visit Franciscan University and go to Mass at 6:30 in the morning! He likes that young people are “messy” sometimes and are still trying to figure things out. With his belief in and enthusiasm for young people, it's not a stretch to say that God has Fr. Dave in just the right place! Griffin Warner and Big East Ben talk college basketball for this weekend. Griffin Warner and Big East Ben recap the week in college hoops, open with Marquette concerns after losing to Dayton, and assess the Big East as potentially a two-bid league with Providence, Creighton, and others underperforming. Ben vents about bad gambling variance but re-energizes after exciting mid-major games like Troy vs USC in triple OT. They analyze upcoming Saturday matchups: Northern Iowa vs UC Irvine, noting UNI's continuity and shooting versus Irvine's elite three-point prevention; they both lean Irvine at home. Throughout, they mix betting insights, roster breakdowns, coaching notes, and behavioral tendencies, finishing with promo details and best bets: Ben taking Marquette -21 vs Central Michigan and Griffin taking UC Irvine pick'em. In this episode I host Roger McQueen of Providence College Hockey. Roger was recently selected 10th Overall in the 2025 NHL Draft and has won two gold medals for Canada.
Margery Kempe cried so much and so loudly that she became one of the most annoying women in her hometown of Lynn as well as neighboring Lincoln and Norwich not to mention Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de compostella where she made pilgrimages. She was regarded as a madwoman, a heretic, a faker, and a lollard. She was also called a deeply pious and religious woman. She was examined by priests, bishops, and archbishops and threatened with burning at the stake. Friars denounced her from the pulpit. Anchorites alternately encouraged and rejected her. She idolized St. Bridget and met St. Julian of Norwich. And she wrote, with the aid of a priest as scribe, what is probably the very first autobiography in the English language.

2025 MLB Trade Deadline has come and past, and play-by-play broadcaster Michael Marcantonini is here to discuss this year's trade deadline winners and losers on the Jack Vita Show! The San Diego Padres once again made the most noise on deadline day, as president of baseball operations AJ Preller made a flurry of aggressive moves, most notably dealing the no. 3 prospect in baseball (and three pitching prospects) to the Athletics in exchange for closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears. The Padres also acquired catcher Freddy Fermin, outfielder Ramon Laureano, starting pitcher Nestore Cortes, and first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn. Michael and Jack share why they believe the Padres won the deadline, and Jack makes a bold proclamation that the Friars will win the National League West over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs were strangely quiet at this year's deadline. Will their passiveness come back to bite them? The Cubs missed an opportunity to upgrade their pitching staff, just days after the Milwaukee Brewers passed them for the NL Central division lead. Jack assesses the Cubs' approach at the deadline, as they enter into the final crunch of the regular season. Elsewhere, the Houston Astros brought home Carlos Correa, while the Seattle Mariners added a pair of big bats from the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the form of Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez. The Philadelphia Phillies added star closer Jhoan Duran, as the Minnesota Twins blew up their team. Michael and Jack discuss and break down it all! Michael is the play-by-play voice of the Aberdeen IronBirds, the High-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. He also broadcasts Division I athletics. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Lectionary: 390The Saint of the day is Saint BonaventureSaint Bonaventure’s Story Perhaps not a household name for most people, Saint Bonaventure, nevertheless, played an important role in both the medieval Church and the history of the Franciscan Order. A senior faculty member at the University of Paris, Saint Bonaventure certainly captured the hearts of his students through his academic skills and insights. But more importantly, he captured their hearts through his Franciscan love for Jesus and the Church. Like his model, Saint Francis, Jesus was the center of everything—his teaching, his administration, his writing, and his life. So much so, that he was given the title “Seraphic Doctor.” Born in Bagnoregio in 1221, Saint Bonaventure was baptized John, but received the name Bonaventure when he became a Franciscan at the age of 22. Little is known about his childhood, but we do know that his parents were Giovanni di Fidanza and Maria Ritell. It seems that his father was a physician and a man of means. While Saint Francis died about five years after the saint's birth, he is credited with healing Bonaventure as a boy of a serious illness. Saint Bonaventure's teaching career came to a halt when the Friars elected him to serve as their General Minister. His 17 years of service were not easy as the Order was embroiled in conflicts over the interpretation of poverty. Some friars even ended up in heresy saying that Saint Francis and his community were inaugurating the era of the Holy Spirit which was to replace Jesus, the Church, and Scripture. But because he was a man of prayer and a good administrator, Saint Bonaventure managed to structure the Order through effective legislation. But more importantly, he offered the Friars an organized spirituality based on the vision and insights of Saint Francis. Always a Franciscan at heart and a mystical writer, Bonaventure managed to unite the pastoral, practical aspects of life with the doctrines of the Church. Thus, there is a noticeable warmth to his teachings and writings that make him very appealing. Shortly before he ended his service as General Minister, Pope Gregory X created him a Cardinal and appointed him bishop of Albano. But a little over a year later, while participating in the Second Council of Lyon, Saint Bonaventure died suddenly on July 15, 1274. There is a theory that he was poisoned. Saint Bonaventure left behind a structured and renewed Franciscan Order and a body of work all of which glorifies his major love—Jesus. Reflection Bonaventure so united holiness and theological knowledge that he rose to the heights of mysticism while remaining a very active preacher and teacher, one beloved by all who met him. To know him was to love him; to read him is still for us today to meet a true Franciscan and a gentleman. Click here for more on Saint Bonaventure! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
