Welcome to the latest edition of the Providence Journal College Basketball Podcast. This is Journal sports writer Bill Koch, and I'm joined as always by a pair of sports directors -- Nick Coit from ABC 6 and WEEI Providence, Morey Hershgordon from WPRI and Fox Providence. We dig into Bryant's upset of Syracuse (1:20), a fight in the first half and the latest round of complaints from Jim Boeheim. Providence (17:30) is up next -- the Friars face a critical trip to TCU off the back of two home wins. URI (30:40) suffered a road loss in a rock fight at Boston College. The Rams are improving but not quite ready to get over the hump just yet. Brown (40:40) held on in a home game against Maine and looks to build some momentum at Central Connecticut. The Bears women (45:50) are on a five-game winning streak and one victory shy of their total for all of 2021-22. They host a Mental Health Awareness game against Holy Cross on Wednesday -- it's such an important issue. The Friars women (55:20) enter Big East play this week off a three-game sweep of their Friar Thanksgiving Classic. Two ranked foes await Providence -- No. 3 Connecticut on Friday and No. 25 Villanova at home on Sunday. The Rams women (61:00) made easy work of a two-game Florida swing and sit at 5-1. They're back home for a strong mid-major showdown with Buffalo on Thursday. Lastly, we offer condolences to the family of Don Kaull (66:00). The former URI forward and long-time Rams radio color man passed away over the weekend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Thanks as always for listening.

Welcome and happy Thanksgiving to all our Providence Journal College Basketball Podcast listeners. This is Bill Koch with the Journal and I'm joined by my usual co-conspirators -- Nick Coit, the ABC6 sports director and WEEI weekend co-host, and Morey Hershgordon, the WPRI and Fox Providence sports director. Providence crapped out over the weekend at Mohegan Sun, swept by Miami and Saint Louis (2:00). The University of Rhode Island got off to a tough start in the Cayman Islands, blitzed by Kansas State in the Monday opener of a three-game stay (15:15). Bryant is back from a three-game Florida swing after going 2-1, and now they prepare for a Saturday showdown at Syracuse (27:40). Brown broke through for its first win to start a three-game homestand, and it has another chance Wednesday night (38:10). We close with a look at the women's scene in the state -- the Rams hosting Coppin State on Tuesday, the emerging Bears on a three-game winning streak and a pending clash between the Friars and Bulldogs in a holiday tournament this weekend (48:50). Thanks as always for listening. Best to you and your families.

It was exactly tendays after the disaster. Using great persistence, they began toremove huge pieces of marble that had once been the Altar. Itwas a devastating sight, almost as if a giant hand had smashedit, or the fires of hell had tried to consume it. Part of the Altarhad fallen, blocking the wall where the Tabernacle had been. The Friars and their helpers lifted the heavy piece of marble. There was the cubicle, where the Tabernacle had been, but theTabernacle had melted from the intense heat. All that was leftwere wood splinters and fragments of marble. Tears in theireyes, they reverently began to lift the fractured parts of the Lord'sformer palace, the Tabernacle. They gently brushed aside themound of grey soft ashes that had collected in the opening. Theycould not believe their eyes. There was something gleaming! As they peered deeper into the alcove where the Tabernacle hadbeen, Father Battista beheld the Holy Eucharist! There OurLord was, in the middle of a cave, once again, unharmed as inBethlehem. Only now, the swaddling cloth was the corporal, atop another linen cloth. The corporal was scorched and thesecond cloth burned more; but the Host rested intact under alight pall of ash.Excerpt from Miracles of the Eucharist book 2 by Bob and Penny LordSupport the show

I'm joined as always by my two co-conspirators -- WPRI/Fox Providence sports director Morey Hershgordon and ABC6 sports director/WEEI weekend co-host Nick Coit. Providence's men (2:50) are 2-0 despite feeling their way through opening games against Rider and Northeastern. The Friars are trying to thread the needle between success and growth -- it's an interesting calculation for Ed Cooley. Rhode Island's men (14:10) have endured similar struggles in their first two games. Turnovers and poor shooting doomed the Rams against Quinnipiac and Texas State. More on that here. Bryant's men (24:30) made some headlines by slaughtering poor Thomas College in a matchup against a non-Division I opponents. We get into scheduling, why the Bulldogs shouldn't have to play such a game and more. South Kingstown native Keegan Records returned with Colgate and made life tough on the Brown men (39:30). The Bears are 0-3 against a difficult early schedule -- more on how they might be able to get well soon. URI hosts Providence in a women's rivalry battle at the Ryan Center on Monday night (50:30). A look at what the game means for the Rams and Friars along with a recap of their first week. Brown women (60:30) and Bryant women (63:00) also in action shortly. Thanks as always for joining us.

Welcome back, hoop fans. We're primed and ready for another season of college basketball. This is Bill Koch, sports writer for the Providence Journal, and I'm joined by my regular pair of co-hosts for this edition. Nick Coit is the sports director at ABC 6 in Providence and the weekend co-host of Cordischi and Coit on WEEI-Providence. Morey Hershgordon is the sports director of WPRI 12 and Fox Providence. This 2022-23 season preview editions spans three chapters and covers all eight Division I teams in the state. We appreciate you partaking in some or all of these two hours. Our two NCAA Tournament teams come first -- Providence men, Bryant men. How much more ceiling is left for the Friars and Bulldogs? Our two mystery teams come next -- Rhode Island men, Brown men (53:16). How will the Rams respond to a new coach and the Bears replace a pair of frontcourt cornerstones? Last but not least, our women (1:33:47). URI and Bryant both came close to March Madness bids last season. How soon until one of these four programs breaks through?  Pods will come out once or twice a week through the season depending on our schedules and happenings around the state. Thanks as always for listening. It's much appreciated.

Hit the road with us! We head to the Big Apple for Big East Basketball Media Day, the Yankees' series-winning victory over the Guardians, and our visit to the Barstool headquarters in Manhattan. We take you in live to our segment on last week's episode of Macrodosing, as The Wonton Don, Billy Football, and Arian Foster review our very own Don's Early Light. Also making their second appearances on the show are college basketball expert Andy Katz and Providence head coach Ed Cooley. Will chats with Georgetown head coach and Knicks legend Patrick Ewing, and Jake catches up with Marquette head coach & former marshal of the cinderella-story VCU Rams, Shaka Smart. Finally, Providence's Jared Bynum joins us to break down the Friars' season and tells us which transfers we should keep our eyes on. BEERS: We're clinging onto NEIPA season like our lives depend on it. Jake tries Barewolf Brewing, a nano brewery in Amesbury, MA. This week, it's “Pina Colossus,” which reminds us a lot of one of our HBC favorites, Grocery Store Joe - with real pineapple and notes of other fruits, this is one we'll be looking for again. Will tries Zonk, a cannabis-infused imperial IPA from Grimm Artisanal Ales. While the high wasn't there, the flavor most certainly was, as this is one of the more hoppy beers you can find in New England. BUSINESS: We tease two big storylines that we'll dive into more next week. In the ever-evolving saga of Elon Musk, he visited the Twitter HQ today, and many think it's to evaluate who he will be laying off. What's next? Also, Adidas cuts ties with Kanye West after his off-color comments. They'll take a $246 million hit due to severing their partnership, but many believe they've actually saved themselves from more long-term losses by cutting ties with ‘Ye now. BALLS: This week's Contenders are playing against each other, while our Pretenders have two veteran quarterbacks struggling to continue to prove their worth. Who rises up to the challenge, and who caves? The Yankees are now out after getting swept by Houston, and it's down to the Astros and the Phillies in the World Series. We close with poking some fun at the LA Lakers, who are the worst-shooting team in NBA history right now. We're proud to present Manscaped as our latest partner! California Accelerates Its Push For Electric Cars This week, air pollution regulators in California voted to phase out sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles, with a complete ban on gas car sales by 2035. The decision could have a larger impact on the automobile industry, however, as many states choose to follow California's lead with regard to air quality and emissions decisions. Sophie Bushwick, technology editor at Scientific American, joins guest host Roxanne Khamsi to help unpack the decision. They also discuss some of the other science stories from this week, including a survey-based study showing that Americans really do care about climate change and support mitigation measures, a look at how sugar substitutes can change the microbiome, and an engineer's advice for how to build the sturdiest sandcastles.   Meet Two Autistic Researchers Changing How Autism Research Is Done For many decades, autistic people have been defined by non-autistic people, including in science. Since the very beginning of research about autistic people, neurotypical scientists and institutions have been at the helm. The field has largely been defined by what neurotypical researchers are curious about learning, instead of prioritizing research that the autistic community asks for. Because of that, and the invisibility of autistic adults in our society, a large chunk of this research has neglected the needs of autistic people. In many cases, it's caused harm to the very people the research aims to help. Until recently, there have been very few openly autistic researchers who study autism. But there is a growing body of openly autistic scientists who are using both their expertise and their own lived experiences to help shape the future of autism research. Guest host Roxanne Khamsi speaks with Dr. TC Waisman, a leadership coach and researcher studying autism and higher education, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Patrick Dwyer, a Ph.D. candidate studying sensory processing and attention in autism at the University of California, Davis. They talk about the history of autism research, why the inclusion of autistic people in research leads to more helpful outcomes, and how they see the future of autism research changing. Ira Kraemer consulted on this story.   Ecological Data From Deep In The Pantry Most people wouldn't be excited by a call offering a basement full of canned salmon dating back to the 1970s. But for researchers trying to establish baselines for what's normal and what's not when it comes to aquatic parasite populations, the archive of fishy tins, maintained by the Seattle-area Seafood Products Association, was a valuable resource. Natalie Mastick and colleagues combed through the tins with tweezers, counting the numbers of parasitic anisakid worms they found. (Since the salmon was cooked, the worms—though gross—posed no risk to human eaters.) The team found that in their samples of chum and pink salmon, the incidence of parasitic infection increased over the 40 years covered by the salmon archive. The finding might be good news—an increase in the numbers of marine mammals in the area, key hosts for the parasites, could be responsible for the wormy increase. Natalie Mastick, a PhD candidate in the University of Washington's School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, joins guest host Roxanne Khamsi to explain the study.   Medieval Friars' Farming May Have Caused Tummy Troubles What was life like back in medieval England? You might think that the learned friars who lived in the town of Cambridge—scholars, with access to innovations like latrines and places to wash their hands—might have lived healthier lives than the common folk. But a recent study published in the International Journal of Paleopathology says that, at least when it comes to intestinal parasites, the friars may have been worse off. Dr. Piers Mitchell runs the Cambridge Ancient Parasites Laboratory and is a senior research associate in the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. Mitchell and colleagues excavated soil samples from around the pelvises of medieval skeletons in one Cambridge cemetery, then examined the soil microscopically looking for parasite eggs. They found that friars in the cemetery had almost twice the incidence of intestinal parasites as commoners in the town—a fact they speculate could be related to friars using human feces, from the friary latrine, to fertilize the gardens. Mitchell joins guest host Roxanne Khamsi to explain the study.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Join practitioner and scholar Jean-François Godet-Calogeras as he tells his story of growth and social engagement from village to village in Belgium and the United States, from happiness to greater happiness as he lives the passion and joy of Franciscan life.   For a video version of this episode, see: https://youtu.be/KRc0LZh5Zws     From Jean-François's interview: “Reading the writings of Francis that is full of quotes from the gospel, I started reading the gospel as I had never read it before. And found out that the gospel happened and was written in a historical context, and the same thing with the writings of Francis, expressed within an historical context, a way of life. And it very quickly became a passion. I could not imagine my life outside of that.”   “I was looking for a passion, and the passion came with the writings of Francis that took me back and deeper into the gospel, the good news of Jesus. … At that point, I became very happy. Much happier than I had been before. I always loved the students, but I was dissatisfied by the institutional context.  And since then, and other experiences, I'm not a very institutional guy. I'm more of an artist or of the present. I'm an historian and I love history, but it's to help me understand and live the present. Not to be with all stones.”   “I'm not doing it on purpose, but I have been more than once labeled rebel. And it's just because I see things that for me make sense, but then I get in trouble. During that time, I discovered the writings of    Clare of Assisi. … Clare was not a nun in enclosure. Clare was a sister with the brothers. And it was basically the same way of life. The man on the road in movement, the women in a place that they called monastery. Culturally, it was just as the world was moving. Women were not normally traveling and mingling with people, but that doesn't mean that they were locked in, in prison. So, I realized that story of First and Second Order, like first and second class, doesn't really fit.”   “I realized again that the Third Order Regular, it was not a third class. And then it became very clear to me that there was one movement. One spiritual family with Francis and Clare, the brother and the sister at the root of that, inspired by the gospel of Jesus. And that movement developed in a very inclusive way to the beginning, but then of course with some complicities and good intention, it had to be organized. It had to be canonically organized.”   “It became clear that I had to leave [the Friars], and I did. … It felt horrible. It felt terrible. It felt that after 18 years or so I was losing my life. I wasn't me anymore. But I faced that. Friends were very, again, very supportive, very instrumental and some, Margaret Carney and others, when traveling to Europe would stop and visit me in my little house in the village, in Belgium. During the time that I was five years in my village, one friend told me that her mother had heard that I was not a Franciscan anymore. And she responded to her mother that no, he's not in the Order of Friars Minor anymore, but he is a Franciscan. That has been a moment of grace to me to realize that, yes, my Franciscan soul was not attached to any institution, and I was grateful for what I had received in the institution. And it's a lot that is part of myself, but I realized I am Franciscan, and I can explain what it means to me. It's a way of life and I will continue.”   For a full transcript, please include episode number and email: fslfpodcast@fslf.org.   References: Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi:  https://osfphila.org/about/francis-and-clare-of-assisi/ The Wolf of Gubbio: read at Read in The Deeds of Blessed Francis & His Companions XXIII, FA:ED, vol. 3, pp. 482-485 at: https://www.franciscantradition.org/francis-of-assisi-early-documents/the-prophet/the-deeds-of-blessed-francis-and-his-companions-1328-1337/2386-fa-ed-3-page-485.   The Little Flowers of Saint Francis: https://www.franciscantradition.org/francis-of-assisi-early-documents/the-prophet/the-little-flowers-of-saint-francis/2467-fa-ed-3-page-566   Desbonnets and Sabatier: The French Friar minor Théophile Desbonnets was the first one to publish the early Franciscan documents in one volume: Saint François d'Assise: Documents (Paris: Éditions franciscaines, 1968). A senior faculty member at the University of Paris, Saint Bonaventure certainly captured the hearts of his students through his academic skills and insights. But more importantly, he captured their hearts through his Franciscan love for Jesus and the Church. Like his model, Saint Francis, Jesus was the center of everything—his teaching, his administration, his writing, and his life. So much so, that he was given the title “Seraphic Doctor.” Born in Bagnoregio in 1221, Saint Bonaventure was baptized John, but received the name Bonaventure when he became a Franciscan at the age of 22. Little is known about his childhood, but we do know that his parents were Giovanni di Fidanza and Maria Ritell. It seems that his father was a physician and a man of means. While Saint Francis died about five years after the saint's birth, he is credited with healing Bonaventure as a boy of a serious illness. Saint Bonaventure's teaching career came to a halt when the Friars elected him to serve as their General Minister. His 17 years of service were not easy as the Order was embroiled in conflicts over the interpretation of poverty. Some friars even ended up in heresy saying that Saint Francis and his community were inaugurating the era of the Holy Spirit which was to replace Jesus, the Church, and Scripture. But because he was a man of prayer and a good administrator, Saint Bonaventure managed to structure the Order through effective legislation. But more importantly, he offered the Friars an organized spirituality based on the vision and insights of Saint Francis. Always a Franciscan at heart and a mystical writer, Bonaventure managed to unite the pastoral, practical aspects of life with the doctrines of the Church. Thus, there is a noticeable warmth to his teachings and writings that make him very appealing. Shortly before he ended his service as General Minister, Pope Gregory X created him a Cardinal and appointed him bishop of Albano. But a little over a year later, while participating in the Second Council of Lyon, Saint Bonaventure died suddenly on July 15, 1274. There is a theory that he was poisoned. Saint Bonaventure left behind a structured and renewed Franciscan Order and a body of work all of which glorifies his major love—Jesus. Reflection Bonaventure so united holiness and theological knowledge that he rose to the heights of mysticism while remaining a very active preacher and teacher, one beloved by all who met him. To know him was to love him; to read him is still for us today to meet a true Franciscan and a gentleman. Click here for more on Saint Bonaventure! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
