This week in the Flamingo Lounge, it's a family affair with father and son Richard and Richie Derwald. Recorded on February 25, 2024. Richard "Dixie Dee" Derwald, a musician, composer, vocalist, and recording artist, has been active in the music industry since 1957. His career began amidst the explosion of rock and roll, a genre he passionately pursued.  During high school, Richard balanced musical ambitions with aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler. He played upright bass and played on extended gigs at the Knickerbocker Lounge located on the Niagara St. corner of Arthur and then at the Capri Lounge also on Niagara St. Simultaneously, he trained at the YMCA, befriending wrestler Steve Stanlee (Mr. America), who mentored him both in the gym and on the mat.  This chance encounter led to a wrestling opportunity in Rochester, where promoter Pedro Martinez offered Richard regular bookings.  This propelled him toward his wrestling goal, leading him to leave the band and dedicate himself to the squared circle. Richie Derwald, a versatile performer, has consistently reinvented himself throughout his career. Beginning with country music tributes in local clubs, he then explored rock with The Memphis Flames, embracing a glam rock persona. The Nightwing Showband era saw him tackling diverse genres, from Las Vegas tributes to light jazz, culminating in opera training and performances at upscale venues. After a Las Vegas residency, Richie created his critically acclaimed "Live from Las Vegas" show, touring with Sandy Hackett's showcase. A subsequent stint with Whitestar Tours showcased his tribute artistry, alongside his wife Debbie. The pandemic halted his touring, but Richie channeled his energy into "Comfort Through Creativity," promoting art's mental health benefits. His original song "Changes" received acclaim, leading to a video series addressing mental fitness. Overcoming a stutter, Richie now speaks publicly about his personal struggles with depression, using performance and humor to inspire hope. Dr. Katherine Ansuini calls him the "Poster Child for Experiential Learning." Today, Richie partners with Nels Ross in "The Up Guys," delivering inspirational presentations blending Ted Talks and "America's Got Talent" elements.

Jeremy Guthrie knows the connection between the design of baseball cleats and that of baseball gloves. Since his retirement from professional baseball in 2017, Jeremy has worked to make Custom Cleats the premier location for athletes looking to convert sneakers to athletic cleats. His keen eye for footwear started in his youth with an appreciation of the Jordan 1 sneakers that his older brother's middle school basketball team rocked one winter. From there, he was always on the quest to grab the latest footwear from Nike. Fast forward to late high school and Jeremy found himself as a premier pitching prospect for Major League Baseball teams. From there he embarked on a journey in which he was drafted three times and eventually landed with the Cleveland Guardians (at that time the Indians). During his grind through the minor leagues, he decided to refresh some of his equipment. He ended up changing his glove to model the Rawlings glove worn by Red Sox legend and Cy Young winner, Pedro Martinez. New glove in hand, Jeremy went on to start over 270 games across parts of 13 MLB seasons and he never wavered from that model of glove.During his run in pro baseball he crossed paths with the company, Custom Cleats. They converted a number of pairs of sneakers into cleats for him during his career and in 2015 as his Kansas City Royals were competing in the World Series, Jeremy signed a deal to own a portion of Custom Cleats. And since retiring he has become the sole owner of Custom Cleats. As the baseball glove market grows each and every year, it shows a lot of signs that it is becoming something similar to that of the sneaker market. The desire to draw attention to a glove due to its look and design continues to increase. As well, gloves are being collected as pieces of art nowadays separate from their ability to defend balls on a baseball field. We hope this interview with Jeremy profiles both the sneaker and glove industries and sheds light on their similarities!Check out Jeremy's Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/therealjguts/Check our Custom Cleats' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/customcleats/Visit the Custom Cleats Site: https://www.customcleats.com/Shop gloves from JustGloves: https://www.justballgloves.com/Questions or Suggestions?E-mail: experts@justgloves.comToll Free Telephone: 1-866-321-GLOV (4568)We hope that you enjoy Beyond The Glove! They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. October 20, 2004 Game 7 of the ALCS began at 8:30 in the evening at Yankee Stadium. After winning the first three and loosing the next three, the Yankees were sending Kevin Brown to the mound to face Derek Lowe for the Red Sox. Johnny Damon, suffering through a 3 for 29 slump decided to play aggressively leading off the game with a single to left and a stolen base, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a Manny Ramirez base hit. The very next pitch, however, was lined into the right-field bleachers by David Ortiz to give Boston a 2--0 advantage. In the second inning, the Sox loaded the bases against Brown, causing Yankees manager Joe Torre to remove him and put in Javier Vázquez to face Johnny Damon. Damon hammered Vázquez' first pitch into the right-field seats for a grand slam. The rout was on. Damon, who also added an upper deck two-run blast in the fourth, had three hits in the game. Boston also enjoyed a solid performance from their starting pitcher, Derek Lowe, who allowed only one run and one hit in six innings of work, and was never even intended to be a starter in the postseason. He pitched game seven on just two days of rest. Pedro Martinez relieved Lowe in the seventh inning, receiving loud chants of "Who's Your Daddy?" which intensified as he gave up two runs. He eventually raised the velocity of his fastball to the mid-90s and shut down the rally. At 12:01 a.m., on October 21, Rubén Sierra hit a groundball to second baseman Pokey Reese, who threw to first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz to finish the unprecedented comeback. "Not many people get the opportunity to shock the world. We came out and did it," Boston first baseman Kevin Millar said. "You know what? We beat the Yankees. Now they get a chance to watch us on the tube."The Red Sox won 10--3 and became the first team in Major League Baseball history to win a seven-game series after losing the first three games.

October 11, 1999 -- With the American League divisional Series between Boston and Cleveland tied at two games apiece, the Red Sox send Bret Saberhagen out to face Charles Nagy. In an eruption of runs, both starters find themselves out of the game by the third inning and the game tied at 8. With the season on the line, Sox manager Jimy Williams summons his ace, Pedro Martinez from the bullpen. The electrifying move sent shockwaves through Jacob's field since Martinez was removed from Game 1 after 4 innings due to a strained back, and all expected they had seen the last of Pedro's incredible 1999 season. Martinez was masterful, striking out eight and walking three despite having neither his fastball nor changeup at his disposal. Throwing hiscurveball almost exclusively, Martinez and the Red Sox won the rubber match of the ALDS 12-8 in what is cited as one of Martinez's greatest appearances. Also memorable in this game was the Indians strategy to intentionally walk shortstop Nomar Garciapara to face outfielder Troy O'Leary. Twice they walked Nomar and twice O'Leary returned the favor with a homerun driving in 7 runs for the day.October 11, 1985, George Brett steals the show in Game 3 of the 1985 American League Championship Series. Down 2-0 to Toronto in the series, Brett drove in or scored every Kansas City run, going 4 for 4 with a single, a double, and two home runs. When Brett wasn't busy torturing Toronto pitcher Doyle Alexander at the plate, he was mystifying in the field making a back-handed stop at third base to throw out a runner at home, and recording the final out to give the Royals a much-needed 6–5 win; their first in a series that they would win in seven games
