She Could Fly, the groundbreaking graphic novel, is a one-of-a-kind reading experience. And now that experimental graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and Berger Books is a documentary escape game designed to challenge how we think about the deeply misunderstood mental illness, OCD. In Episode #651, Wayne talks with leader/co-designer Sara Kenney and co-producer Mairéad Ruane. They worked with a team of ‘Lived Experience' experts to inform the content and create a global engagement campaign to shift how we think about OCD and mental health. Scientists, psychologists and medical humanities experts were part of the iterative design process, checking and commenting on scripts and game drafts for over two years. It's described this way: “Combining comic art, documentary films and interactive gameplay, the She Could Fly Documentary Escape Game is a point and click, psychological game from Wowbagger Productions that takes players on a looping adventure to explore OCD.” We discuss how this project came to be, who the characters are, and how you can access the book as well as the now-available game. Don't miss this entertaining interview! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers Patreon member. It will help ensure Wayne's Comics Podcast continues far into the future! [su_signoff]

Jace chats with Sara Kenney and Kiana Firouz about the recently released She Could Fly Documentary Escape Game. Inspired by the incredible She Could Fly comic by Christopher Cantwell and Martin Morazzo this game is designed to help dispel the misinformation and cliches associated with OCD. Drawing from documentary style clips from real people who live with OCD, the game is hugely educational and emotional at times. The puzzles are engaging and entertaining with proceeds going to programs to help strengthen mental health services.

Legendary comics editor Karen Berger talks with us about her new project at Image Comics, Surgeon X, with writer Sara Kenney and artist John Watkiss. We also talk about her work at Vertigo, the creator-driven, mature-readers publishing imprint she founded at DC Comics. Karen is well known in comics circles as the editor on massively influential comics work, including Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, The Sandman, Preacher , Y: The Last Man, The Invisibles, Fables, and many, many more. Written by documentarian and comic-newcomer Sara Kenney, with art by John Watkiss, Surgeon X explores a near-future world where antibiotics are becoming ineffective and governments regulate their availability to patients. In a time when minor infections and previously treatable diseases are now deadly, hospitals are forced to withhold services from patients who fall low on a Productivity Contribution Index. The rise of increasingly autocratic governing parties who arbitrarily decide who is worthy of live-saving treatments provokes riots and violent counter-measures. And one doctor, sick of the restraints on the medical community, leaves her position at a hospital to pursue unregulated, underground surgery solutions. She becomes the titular Surgeon X, struggling against a corrupt system, and against her own growing god-complex as she controls who lives and who dies.

In episode two of Changing Reels we turn our focus to Kasi Lemmons' 2001 thriller The Caveman's Valentine. The film follows a homeless man, Romulus (Samuel L. Jackson), who was once a promising composer but now lives in a cave in New York City. When the frozen body of a young man ends up in a tree near his dwelling, the paranoid schizophrenic Romulus ignores the police's assessment, of it being an accidental death, and embarks on a quest to find the killer. We also discuss our short films picks of the week Ryan Coogler's Locks and Sara Kenney's Angels and Ghosts.
