Show notes provided by Arco EspositoAs comic book fans we all have a particular favorite era that we can either remember fondly or relate to in some way that makes it a bit more special than others. However, has there ever been a time in comics history that has graced the medium with as many memorable, and dare I say even legendary, characters as the run between Fantastic Four #44 through #66?? The Marvelous Marvel Minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby gave us the classic debuts of the Inhumans, The Black Panther and he would soon be called Adam Warlock! Classic villains such as Klaw and Doctor Doom would also feature prominently in a few stories but nestled in between all this grandeur was the piece de resistance, the jewel in what many call crowning glory of all that is Marvel: THE COMING OF GALACTUS! That's right! The world devourer and his herald The Silver Surfer made their way to Earth in a three issue arc, #48-50, and comics were forever changed. For how can mere mortals even comprehend let alone fight against a virtual force of the universe?! Stan and Jack showed us the way and in doing so literally opened up the universe and all its wonderful characters to us. Join James, Joe and Arco, your guides through all that is Cosmic Marvel and listen in to the awe, joy and appreciation of how the Earth almost being literally eaten turned out to be one of the greatest stories ever told!

I want you all to get off your seats, pull out your lighters or your cell phones, and get ready to listen to some boys bring you the music in an absolutely unplugged manner. And by unplugged, I mean I do not know what I am writing right now. Breakfast; is it the food of champions or is it the lazy man's late-night snack. Who knows? I do know that chaos will reign supreme in my house when I bring home hot dogs from Costco at 10 AM. So be like me and drive your family crazy! What about sleazy people in sleazy cafes? Are they stereotypes, or are they just dives? Are you going to need a tetanus shot if you make the mistake of sitting down? Will you sneeze after leaving and find an entire dish cloth has fallen out of your nose? Probably. And then we have the Inhumans being all high and mighty in their castle in the sky. Who do they think they are? Some type of mafic space race that sucks gas. Well...yes, because they are. I just have nothing to say here. And then we have the Baxter Building all cut up. Who would want to live in that place? No walls, so drafty, no privacy....all of your stuff being shown to the world. Noone in their right mind would want to live in this glass house. So there. First issue of the new volume! Are you excited? Are you entertained? The answer is a surprising yes. I mean, Matt Fraction! C'mon now, this shall be interesting if not funny. Plus, more content!!!! Yeah, baby! New beginning, means new storyline and new characters? But, I just got to really know the Fantastic Four. It only took me 50 years to get to really know them...do I really need to learn about new people? I guess we need to talk about where the Terrific Three plus One are going and why they will not be here. But I think you should listen to our show or read the comic to figure out those reasons. That is my opinion, and I am making this web page, so that is what we will do. What about these new people....who are they, why are they here, what does mac and cheese taste like on the moon? Some of these questions can be answered now, some will never be known, unless we go back to the moon. I guess we can say that one guy is Ant Man. He changes sizes and steal things. We do have She Hulk back, so that is a big plus. It is great to have a little bit of green on the team. It would be better if they had green money, or gold, or a platinum credit card. Without that, a lawyer who can work some pro bono and punch villains is always a plus. Royalty time. We have Medusa from the Inhumans who is taking a bit of a sabbatical from being a queen to becoming one of four. She does bring a bit of class and conditioner into the team. She also brings along her own hair nets, so that is good. Val and Franklin are going with the Fantastic Four so I guess we don't need to talk about them. We should talk about Darla, but she really is showcased next issue, so we can ignore her for now. See, this is fun, right? I guess that leaves the rest of the Future Foundation. The kids are all still here, including our favorite boy, Alex Power...and our second favorite boys Leech and Artie. We like seeing them. They are nice. So, there we go. And we did it. We made it to the last issue of FF. What a fun little series. Hickman put together some compelling stories and weaved them through this and Fantastic Four. We should take a moment to think about what we learned from our review of this series, FF, over this past year or so. Time has been spent on this book, and beer has been drunk. That all being said, what has been read and what has been discussed. We started with everyone thinking that the Human Torch was dead, and the hiring of one Mr. Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. This changed the team dynamics and beat of the team. We started with the team at a low point, but we end with a stronger and more knowledgeable family. There was also the introduction of the Future Foundation. This is the team that has our boy Alex having something mover tangible than what happened to him in the New Warriors, but not by much. At least he was treated like he had intelligence and not just a paper weight. But the Future Foundation was a great idea. A group of smart kids solving the world's problems. They were a weird group of punks who brought something different to the conversation. THe ensemble could have been used more effectively at certain points, but it was not bad. We discovered that AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) having the bright idea to free The Wizard from prison and making him their leader proves that their ideas really aren't too advanced as they gave him back at the end of the series and asked for a do over. We learned that having Spider-man on your team is a great idea, while having Dr. Doom is an occasionally good idea if you can stand the Doomness of him. Also, inviting The Wizard, Diablo, The Mad Thinker and The High Evolutionary to stand with you for some out of the box thinking is a great way to to get betrayed and stabbed in the back when the chips are down by people that you just fed lunch to. A surprising number of issues deal with Black Bolt and The Inhumans interacting with the Supreme Intelligence and the Kree...we both found these issues, storylines and interactions to be boring, unwelcome and a distraction from important things, like what the Future Foundation kids are up to in their own title. Unfortunately, what they are often up to is standing off to a side, quietly observing the actions of other characters while storylines unfurl around them and their contributions amount to them being able to say that they were there too. Speaking of surprises, a surprising number of beings were turned into pets. Dr. Doom to a multiversal Reed Richards, a couple of multiversal Reed Richards' to a Supreme Intelligence, Johnny Storm to Annihilus, Annihilus to a resurrected Johnny Storm, and Galactus to a Franklin Richards. All in all it was a fun series and a worthwhile read, but it really shined when it dealt with the title holders of this series, the kids. Their developments, their growths, their failings and their foibles, their interactions and all the things that make them the foundation of the future. By Walt HickeyWelcome to the Numlock Sunday edition.This week, I spoke to Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzales, coauthors of the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, out in paperback this week.I really loved the book, it dives into what is the main flywheel of mainstream entertainment, for better or for worse, and dives into the fascinating history of the MCU. Whether you're a fan of Marvel movies or just someone living in a world dominated by them, the book is a really interesting look into contemporary filmmaking and the pressures and economics and just simply human scale of these massive operations.We spoke about Marvel's journey from underdog to cultural icon, how its moviemaking process has changed over time, and what it was like covering a narrative that was developing in real time.Robinson and Gonzales can both be found on the podcast Trial by Content, and the book can be found wherever books are sold.This interview has been condensed and edited. Dave and Joanna, thank you so much for coming on.GONZALES: Absolutely.ROBINSON: Thanks for having us.I really, really love this book. So happy to see it out in paperback. I guess I'll just kick it off with an easy one: What were each of your first experiences with Marvel? How'd you get into this?ROBINSON: As in the comic books or the films?Anything.ROBINSON: Anything at all. Gosh, I think X-Men: The Animated Series was my introduction, back in my infancy. It really got into the world they created, the various characters, their character sets, the trading cards, and then everything spirals out from there. That was my introduction.GONZALES: Mine was probably with the comics. I might have had some X-Men: The Animated Series in there, but I got much more into the comics around late 1993, early '94, when I happened to buy a Spider-Man issue that was part of “The Trial of Peter Parker.” Suddenly I had questions: Why was Peter Parker on trial? How many different Spider-Man books were there? Because I bought an issue of The Spectacular Spider-Man, but the next part of “The Trial of Peter Parker” was The Amazing Spider-Man.That led me to get a cubby at my local comic book shop in Louisville, Colorado, which was Time Warp Comics at the time. That was my way in, just being a comic book fan. I also jumped in on one of the longest and mostly considered worst Spider-Man arcs, but loved it. So imagine how good “good” Spider-Man was to me as a child, because I got weaned in on “bad” Spider-Man.Amazing. One reason I really dug the book is that it's about the MCU, but it's also about Marvel, the history of this entire company, and its very different evolution over time, from the '60s to the period of the '90s. What was it like trying to cover not just a film series, but a big franchise with a lot of moving parts as part of an even bigger company with even more moving parts?ROBINSON: A good question we asked ourselves was both where to start and where to end, and where to end was a constant, ongoing question mark. I'll let Dave address that. But in terms of where to start, there were certain things we felt we had to backdate, because there were players involved in the major “How did Marvel Studios come to be?” question and you had to know who they were, why they were important, how did we get here and what were the stakes? Being able to loosely explain who's Stan Lee, who's Perlmutter, who's Avi Arad, who are all these people, helped us tell that story without losing the audience entirely by throwing a bunch of new names at them. Dave, what about ending the book?GONZALES: Oh, ending the book. That was super fun. We started right as Avengers: Endgame was in theaters. I remember seeing Endgame and knowing that Joanna and I were going to work on this, so we started off thinking, what a fantastic hill that Marvel climbed, this interconnected universe with three phases. Everything surely was planned out from the beginning and could only go up from here. The book was originally “The Rise of Marvel Studios,” because we thought surely this was just up and up and up.Then the pandemic hit — which was very good for us, having to write the book and just sit down and figure out what it was. It also gave us and a lot of sources a pause to regain our footing. As Marvel started rolling out, we tried to peg an end date. I wanted it to be Blade to Blade when we started, but Mahershala Ali's project has still not come out, so that became an impossibility. Then WandaVision premiered and suddenly there was this whole other aspect to the story we were trying to tell. So we wanted to do that and just tried to report things as they went along.We were blessed and cursed by the year that we published the hardcover, October 2023. As we were turning in the final part of the book in January and February, a whole bunch of Marvel news started breaking. Ike Perlmutter left Disney; Victoria Alonso, who was a big mover and shaker in Marvel Studios, was let go, so we had to report that out; Jonathan Majors went on trial.It was only in a panic over all those things that I really ended up appreciating what we had done just by thinking of all these topics so thoroughly for several years. Even though we were tacking new endings on, it wasn't that hard to make it feel like it was a whole arc because we were kind of working there anyway. I wouldn't say I'd've enjoyed releasing the first version of this book in one of Marvel's worst financial years and most critical years ever, but I do think it provided an interesting little tie-off or a fascinating ellipses that allowed us to be relevant and, more importantly, in the year 2024, look like we knew exactly what we were talking about in Marvel's rebounds.That's a really good point. When I met you on tour, a key thing you were getting at was that the idea that Marvel has not had a slump before is naive, and also ahistorical. A fun thing about the book is that you go through all these different eras, and sure, there's an easier story and probably a more polished, corporate story that's ever upward, toward Excelsior, all that crap.But you really do cover the pits and troughs of this. There was Iron Man 2; there was Thor: The Dark World; there was that period of time between the assorted Spider-Mans. What was that perspective like, particularly as it was coming out and as you were able to talk about the issues in 2023?ROBINSON: It was important for us, just on a basic journalistic level, to try to tell as much of the story as possible. We're fans of Marvel, of the movies, but as long as I've known Dave, both of us have been people who don't like to feel like we're not being told the whole story. We don't want the PR version of something — we want to know all the messy details as well. And it's not to knock Marvel or have any kind of “gotcha” moment. It's to say, “Okay, they had these various pitfalls, these various problematic people that they were working with, X, Y and Z. Look what they accomplished anyway.” That's the story in broad strokes. It was important for us to be able to acknowledge the stumbles along the way.When we found ourselves in a 2023 space where everyone was saying Marvel is cooked, or Marvel used to know exactly what it was doing from the beginning and now they're just making it up — no, they were always making it up. They just did it so well, you didn't notice. That gave us a better perspective to be able to say, let's just slow down. We were looking ahead to 2024, saying they're only putting out one movie and two shows next year. If those hit, then you'll start to hear that Marvel's back, baby. Then Deadpool & Wolverine makes a gajillion dollars and Agatha All Along is a pretty solid hit for them.So I think that “Marvel is over” narrative that was so prevalent a year ago is now the question, “Is Marvel back?” Looking even further forward at the next couple of big projects coming, I think Captain America: Brave New World is going to be a tough one for them. I don't know if that's going to hit the way a lot of people want it to. I think Thunderbolts is going to be hit for them, and I think The Fantastic Four: First Steps is going to be hit for them. They're still getting their bearings, but to your point, it was a bit naive to say they've been nothing but successful and now they've run off a cliff. Dave, what do you think?GONZALES: It was just a less interesting narrative, ultimately. I actually found myself getting less adversarial the more we learned, especially being a fan when all this started around 2008. There was this idea that Joanna was talking about, which is even a fan perspective today, that if something doesn't work out it's because we've been denied something at some creative step. Like, you know what, screw those guys; we want to do Harrison Ford as Red Hulk instead, or something like that.But it's not that at all. There are a whole bunch of different drama and production and business problems, and all these things come together to make these gigantic machines of a movie work. It was really important for us to drill down on Marvel Studios and get into those ups and downs, because a lot of times you can try to compare Marvel Studios to something through contrast, through Warner Brothers trying to do it with DC back in the early 2010s. Everybody started trying to launch an interconnected universe from the first movie, but all you could really say is that Marvel's worked and these others didn't. The details of the alchemy are in the tiny stories and little conflicts. That's why I think they were so important to track, be they how movie stars look or how we use CGI to make movie stars look. Tracking that over at Marvel Studios was just as important as how many movies Tony Stark was going to be in.Can you speak more to how much of this was on the fly? One of my big takeaways from your book was just how much things aren't necessarily set in stone during the production of a movie, and how sometimes one person's smart idea, regardless of where it comes from, can drastically alter what a lot of folks think was written in stone in 2007.ROBINSON: That idea of “best idea wins” — without ego; best idea from whomsoever — was a prevailing concept at Marvel. Kevin Feige was also this really interesting figure that has no comparison at any other studio. He's head of the studio, a creative producer, a storyteller in his own right and someone who wanted to make movies as a kid and thought he would be a director. He wound up an executive, but he has that storytelling sense. When Marvel was putting out fewer films and TV shows — or no TV shows at all and just a few films a year — the process was, “Go shoot your movie. Bring me, Kevin Feige, back the pieces and I'll tell you what you're missing.” They had this built-in reshoot window where you could go and add scenes where he felt like you hadn't really nailed this character, or cut this action out to bump up the action over here a bit more. They had this rough-drafting process with the master editor being Kevin Feige himself. There's no system like that at any other studio.That works so well for them, and in doing so, they're able to cement over the cracks and make it all feel like one smooth story that they're telling, because that refining process is built into their filmmaking process. Once the mandate comes from Disney, from Iger on his way out the door, from Chapek in his seat for a while, that they need to compete with Netflix and all these other streaming services, that they need more and more content — then the pace becomes untenable for that revision process that made them so solid in the first place.You talk about Feige not having an analog. I was really shocked reading the book because there's not even anything recent. You have to go back to Cecil B. DeMille for someone who has that producer, authorial presence. He's really a fascinating figure, and it's a key takeaway from the book that I loved. It really highlights the people who make these movies, not just the corporation. It's actual human beings who do this kind of stuff, often with long continuities. Do you want to speak about some of that?GONZALES: Definitely. Actually, while you were talking, I was wondering if part of the chip on Zack Snyder's shoulder was because someone at some point told him he was going to be a Kevin Feige and he's been chasing that ever since.A lot of the Marvel continuity that's been going on is still going on, even after our new chapter. It's been interesting to see how it's developed. It could be that the best idea wins, but then they also have that old school, in-house process where the starting team is very often the same people and has been since phase one. You put together a bullpen of concept artists, so you're constantly using concept art. Not only is that smart from a design standpoint for making a movie, but then you can have those things scanned and it goes directly into making toys. So at the beginning, there's no fight about bringing on these design creatives super early on.Where we start to see the wear and tear is, as Joanna was saying, with this output increase. All of the pressure starts being put on post-production, which is the place where you can't make more time. The solution is to hire more people, and because of that, the job of keeping things consistent falls to Victoria Alonso.She does a pretty good job considering that she's working a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week work schedule because the industry is so messed up. It was never built to do stuff like this. In a lot of ways, the way the VFX industry is structured is still from the '90s turn of the century, when you would bid on a number of shots to do and get money for that number of shots. You'd have to work those shots until they get approved by the director. There isn't an extra budget, and there isn't an overtime, which was a fine way to do it when there were three or four VFX shots in every movie. But now that we're in the 200s or some such, there's a natural strain put on that, and it's impossible to budget on the VFX side. They have to underbid because there's a limited amount of work. If Marvel decides they don't like you, as much as a third of your entire year's work can just not come to your company.As Marvel ages into it, we get a lot of people who are able to make their careers there, from Kevin Feige to Mary Livanos, who's doing great things on Agatha and seems really close to being ascendant. We have Brad Winderbaum, who's been made head of streaming now to take some of that pressure off Kevin. You have all these great continuities. You're less likely to see continuities in visual effects artists, just because of how they're going recently. When Joanna and I were interviewing people like ILM for Hulk, occasionally we'd do a person that was in three or four movies. Now, like for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there was a team of about 12 people at Framestore who make animals look good. They just come in for that movie to make animals look incredibly good. They did it the whole time, but they're not as legacy as other parts of the Marvel development studios — which I hope will change, because there are some people who are really good at making Hulks. And if you've made Hulks for 20 years, shouldn't those be the people that are making Hulks in Brave New World? We'll have to see.ROBINSON: I love that you mentioned Cecil B. DeMille. As we were putting this whole story together and realizing that they bring all these teams in-house, Dave and our coauthor Gavin and I, we are to varying degrees students of old Hollywood history, and we had this realization that it's just the old Hollywood studio system. You're putting actors under contract for nine movies, all this other stuff, and we felt so smart. Then I was talking to someone who worked at Marvel and they were like, “Oh yeah, Kevin says that all the time.” I was like, oh, I thought we really put something together. But at least we were right! We were consciously doing this.I think that industrial element of it is really interesting. A key thing that changed the way I see the film industry was realizing that every movie is basically a corporation that briefly exists. Every movie is an entire apparatus, with a CEO operation and departments and all that. Then it folds and you move on to the next one.With Marvel, though, the circus never closes; it's just onto the next city. It was really interesting to see its place in the industry. Like Dave was saying, the limiting reactant for some of this is just the number of animators on the earth who are capable of making this kind of stuff. It's so cool to get a look inside this apparatus through the book.ROBINSON: Thank you.GONZALES: What an apparatus. It's really interesting to me, even now, as we are pending the return of the Russo brothers, who are just able to find this and also find the emotion in it.In Endgame, the Tony Stark “I am Iron Man” moment was the last insert. They had to go to dinner with Robert Downey Jr. and Joel Silver and have Silver be like, “You'd be dumb not to do it, Robert,” because Downey didn't want to go back there. He's a weird dude, but for him, it felt like in order to get to what he needed to do, he had to take off a scab that had formed and get back into the character. Whereas the Russo brothers are like, we built a workout system and we have our smoothies and every day is trying to make the machine work. Somehow, through the alchemy of those two things, the machine works, and occasionally we get these story moments that feel like they were created individually for that movie.That, I think, is the mystery that the book is trying to unravel. At the beginning, it's untapped storytelling potential. Everyone's like, if you don't have the X-Men, if you don't have Spider-Man, what do you have? There's so much in just proving that you have good stories. Now that you're the biggest game in town, that idea of, “Are you going to make me feel anything?” is so much different than what the initial promise was, that they're going to bring Thanos to the screen and you're going to understand who he is and what he wants. That was the big lift. Now there's a whole simultaneous saving of the industry, and bestowing status on different actors. There's just so much more mixed up in it now. It's amazing we got where we did.The book is also a really interesting look at the transition from being a super underdog. As you describe in the earliest chapters of the book, Marvel was bankrupt, and all the executives were folks who fell out of the toy industry or Revlon. The folks who were in charge came to it in the manner of somebody accidentally having to join a carnival, and then eventually it becomes the hegemonic juggernaut of everything, in many ways the thing that people stand against. In the book, watching the perception around it change and then internally having to adapt to that change in perception was a really cool tension.ROBINSON: My favorite indicator of that underdog status versus top-of-the-world status versus wherever we are now is the making of the first Iron Man movie. Marvel Entertainment in New York — who was, to your point, chiefly concerned with merchandising and toys — had the attitude, “Okay, go make your cute little movie. If it doesn't cost us any money, you can go do your little cinematic experiment in Hollywood and we don't really care that much. Just make sure you don't spend any of our money. Other than that, go have fun.”And they make Iron Man, and Iron Man is a massive, smash hit, and all of a sudden the people in New York are like, we're forming something called the Creative Committee. We would like a lot of intake. We want to be part of this. This is the big shiny thing, and everyone wants to weigh in on it. So it's really interesting to track this going from a weird little project they were doing out in Los Angeles to The Thing for Marvel. You can track it by who needs to have an opinion about what and when they start to care.GONZALES: One of my favorite moments — it's after the book chapter “Marvel vs. the Creative Committee” — is when Kevin Feige gets on stage himself to unveil the entirety of phase three, which includes Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and everything. That is such a telling moment for me. He had just won his battles with these behind the scenes. He's fully in full control. Black Panther is coming. Joss Whedon is in the edits for Avengers: Age of Ultron, in the audience, but they already know he's not coming back.There was a version of a chapter in the book that was just me going through that and being like, here's why each one of these announcements is like Kevin Feige spiking a football in the face of someone that told him he couldn't do it. That's still the purest creative energy I've seen. “We could finally do it!” burst out of Marvel. I think they've been more reserved since, even with some big announcements, but I like to go back and look at that just to see the pivot point when Marvel was the underdog. It was like, we want Black Panther, we want Captain Marvel, but the studio won't let us do it. Then Kevin Feige gets up and goes, “Here are the next 10 years of your life.” It's just such a joyous moment.ROBINSON: We love that moment. We talked to people behind the scenes who were working at Marvel at the time about it, and there's a reason that whole presentation wasn't at a Comic-Con. It wasn't at D23. It was its own thing at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles, and internally, they jokingly called it Kevin-Con. It was this whole thing, and part of it was that they weren't ready to announce certain things at Comic-Con.But part of it was this moment for Feige who fought various personalities across the various companies to get control of the narrative. And I agree, Endgame is of course in all of history going to be looked at as the pinnacle of achievement at Marvel. But I actually think it might be Kevin-Con at the El Capitan Theater, when Chadwick Boseman comes out and Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are there to anoint him as the future of the franchise. That, of course, comes with its own terrible poignancy. We were really lucky to talk to Chadwick Boseman for the book before he passed away. These were things that happened while we were writing the book. History was constantly happening as we were trying to frame this entire narrative.If there's a protagonist in the book, it feels like it's Kevin, even in the earliest days when he was advising on the Fox products. Having read the book and then seen Deadpool & Wolverine — which, as you mentioned, went on to become a phenomenal financial success — it was really cool to come away with a little more admiration for the role that Kevin had in some of the Fox properties. Seeing that manifest in the MCU was just really nice.ROBINSON: I love that he got to have his Wolverine story, given that it all starts with him in a trailer with Hugh Jackman saying it needs to be bigger, it needs to be bigger, it needs to be bigger. I love that.GONZALES: I don't even know if it's still called that, but Joanna used to call that the “Feige fix-it.” Instead of developing these things by always going forward and introducing younger Avengers, he's actually much more interested in reaching back. There were good things there. Or, I guess the generous way to think about it is rewarding the fans that were around before it was the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like, “You didn't waste your time with X-Men: The Last Stand. I know it might have felt like that occasionally, but here's this. Or Andrew Garfield. Yeah, maybe we treated him badly, but don't worry. You didn't waste your time with that because boom, here it is paying off in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”Initially there was some hesitancy about Marvel homework. Do I need to have seen these things to do these things? But ultimately, if we're just talking dollars and cents, the nostalgia play has made them a billion dollars so many times that it doesn't surprise me that Deadpool & Wolverine is a huge hit just by being a swan song for the Fox movies.ROBINSON: I was personally incredibly gratified to finally get Channing Tatum as Gambit. That was a very important moment for me.My favorite version of the Feige fix-it was putting the storyline from Thor: The Dark World into Endgame and making Thor: The Dark World, the most universally mocked and reviled MCU film, an integral part of their biggest triumph. All of a sudden that's wrapped into the larger tapestry in a way so you can't just toss it in the garbage and say, oh, don't bother watching Thor: The Dark World — now you have to watch it to understand everything you're seeing in Endgame, which is certainly not a movie you're ever going to skip.It's a magic trick that really works and almost shouldn't work as well as it does. But even how they were able to get the Infinity Stones, almost taking elements of the first couple films that were dropped or introduced somewhat randomly and then doing that. It's a trick that they keep on pulling.GONZALES: Kevin Feige will say this, but we're coming up on 80 years of comic book history, and if there's one thing that comic books do more than any other medium, it's just use the same story. How could you have another angle on this story? They have so much A/B testing on what we like about this character, or what we'll buy about a certain character, it's interesting to see Marvel adapt that along with what sort of story you like on the Hollywood side of it.But yeah, we're going to see Captain America: Brave New World and finally see that Celestial that came out of the ocean in Eternals. Every Marvel property contributes something, we're told. Except the Inhumans; that never happens.The book is MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, and it's a fascinating look at the intersection of the humanity behind these movies and the technology of these movies. And if there's one figure that reminds me of that in particular, obviously, one of the most central people in the Marvel universe is Green Steve. Let's talk a little about him before we wrap this one up.ROBINSON: He's my favorite! Green Steve, a Chippendales dancer that was painted green in order to make sure they understood how the green light on skin would be captured accurately for the Hulk. Green Steve was one of my favorite anecdotes we got, and it was out of the book for a while before we worked it back in. Dave, what do you want to say about Green Steve?GONZALES: I love Green Steve. I love that this bodybuilder from Long Island can technically say he played the Hulk in a sort of way. In theory, because it's a whole CGI character, he might have played the Hulk close to how much Mark Ruffalo played the Hulk in that first movie. I love that story.Pretty early on, we brought in Gavin Edwards, our third author, to help us do a book, since Joanna and I had never done a book before. We were starting to put together the notes and I was like, can we please have a mid-credits scene? Can we just have a chapter in the middle of the notes?ROBINSON: That was Dave.GONZALES: I held onto that for as long as possible. I remember in one of the final meetings after we turned in the draft, we pitched it up to the editor and they were like, “That's really fun,” and I thought, oh thank god. That was a really early idea, and Green Steve fits that perfectly; it's a super interesting story that doesn't really belong anywhere else, but will stick in your mind as, Marvel literally tried everything to make the best Hulk. So I'm very happy that it's the mid-credits chapter — and remains the mid-credits chapter! Even when we added another chapter in, we were like, where does this go? Not before Green Steve.ROBINSON: He's got the final word for sure.Amazing. The book's out of paperback now. Where can folks find it? Where can they find you? It is time for us to talk about the Inhumans...again. They are like a pennies that keeps on showing up. They just appear in my pants pocket right when I am about to wash my jorts. He took it from one end of the universe to the other. Mostly looking for people to fight, but also for love. Speaking of lovers, the man had many wives, amongst many races. This meant that he had an awesome group of fighters that served him with a might love. I think that I have said love one too many times. These mighty warriors now how to make an entrance. (0:00:55) Al: Oh no. Well, I mean, you know, a snake isn’t an insect. (0:01:01) Codey: It’s not, but it’s like in the very first day (0:01:04) Codey: They were like, this is the ultimate– (0:01:06) Codey: pit viper. If you get bit by one, you need to go to a hospital immediately, and you still might lose your limb. (0:01:13) Codey: And they had all these things. And then literally the next day I’m walking on a trail, and I– (0:01:18) Codey: I’m from Pennsylvania. We have– or I’m not from Pennsylvania, but I’m in Pennsylvania. (0:01:23) Codey: There’s lots of rattlesnakes here, so I’m used to it. You’re walking on a trail. You still look down. (0:01:27) Codey: You don’t look around you. You look down. And I almost set my foot down, and I was like, “Oh, that’s a snake.” (0:01:33) Codey: She was very well camouflaged. (0:01:36) Codey: It was Epen, she remained Epen, but I told people, I was like, “Hey, don’t go that way. There’s a Tertio Pelo or, gosh, what is the other, Fertilance?” (0:01:44) Codey: And people, of course, were like, “Oh, I wanna see it!” (0:01:48) Codey: And then I came over, so then I stood there and was basically like a bouncer for this snake. (0:01:56) Al: I - this is why I don’t travel very much. I just don’t - we just - like Scotland, pretty (0:02:05) Codey: Ah. (0:02:06) Al: safe place. We don’t really - technically we have one venomous snake, but it’s like (0:02:13) Al: the sort of venomous that you’re gonna have an itchy leg for a while, like that’s about (0:02:18) Codey: Yeah. (0:03:01) Al: They’ll understand why soon (0:03:04) Al: There’s a whole thing (0:03:06) Al: We’re gonna talk about that before that we have some game news a decent chunk of game news (0:03:11) Al: We’ve gotten it’s gotten busy again, and it’s not all game delays (0:03:16) Al: But we have hit that period and we have had that time in the year where there’s lots of games getting delayed till next year (0:03:18) Codey: It is getting to be mostly game delays, but not all. (0:03:24) Codey: Maybe like half game delays right now. (0:03:24) Al: No, no, it wasn’t, it’s not… (0:03:26) Codey: Next episode will be more. (0:03:29) Al: This is not even half, it’s not even half. (0:03:31) Al: There’s only three game delays this episode. (0:03:33) Codey: Uh-huh, for now. (0:03:55) Codey: Here we go. (0:03:58) Al: It’s my favorite time of the year, uh, game delay season. (0:04:00) Al: Uh, yeah, cool. So we’ve got some news, but first of all, Cody, what have you been up to? (0:04:06) Al: Other than trying to die in Costa Rica. (0:04:08) Codey: Uh, well, uh, unsuccessfully dying in Costa Rica. (0:04:13) Codey: Uh, and then just a lot of research stuff. (0:04:16) Codey: Um, and I was very, so I was in Costa Rica to do fly school, learn about flies, (0:04:21) Codey: learn how to identify them. (0:04:22) Codey: So I’ve been like super jazzed about getting through some of my (0:04:24) Codey: specimens, which is great. (0:04:26) Codey: Um, also did, uh, just did the great insect fair, which is Penn state’s big, (0:04:30) Codey: um, outreach event. (0:04:31) Codey: We had about 3000 people from across the state come and visit, um, (0:04:34) Codey: and learn about insects. (0:04:36) Codey: And that was super cool. (0:04:38) Codey: Uh, but when I wasn’t, uh, crippled by stress about the great insects, (0:04:43) Codey: great insect fair, uh, I was playing, uh, coral Island, of course, (0:04:47) Codey: a dove back into this game with both feet. (0:04:50) Codey: Um, not deep enough, but let, but we’ll get to that. (0:04:53) Codey: Uh, also a Disney dream light Valley. (0:04:56) Codey: I still play it every day. (0:04:57) Codey: Um, I’m trying to get all the critters and they, whether or not they show (0:05:02) Codey: up each day as a, you know, tossup. (0:05:05) Codey: Um, so I check. (0:05:08) Codey: Log on every morning and I check and see like, Oh, are they here? (0:05:10) Codey: I think I still have two of the crocodiles that I want and then one (0:05:14) Codey: Fox, um, that I don’t have, but I have befriended all of the other critters. (0:05:19) Codey: I’m also just like 100%ing everything in that game. (0:05:23) Codey: So I’m trying to get all the achievements. (0:05:24) Codey: So I give it maybe like 20 to 30 minutes a day. (0:05:28) Codey: Um, and then, uh, my best friend, Devin and I have moved on from (0:05:33) Codey: Minecraft for now, we’ve just tabled it. (0:05:36) Codey: and we’re playing Call of the Wild. (0:05:38) Codey: the angler so it’s a very uh it is farmville fishing oh sorry not farmville um (0:05:45) Codey: farming simulator fishing it’s like that quality but fish where it’s like really detailed about (0:05:53) Codey: do you have a float set up do you have a spinner set up do you have a what kind of set up do you (0:05:57) Codey: have what kind of rod do you have it’s it’s pretty intense but i’m enjoying it (0:06:02) Al: That looks like a game I do not want to play (0:06:06) Codey: it’s nice because it’s it’s all (0:06:08) Codey: open world. So there’s like, a bunch of different maps that (0:06:11) Codey: you can go to. And part of it, you just like explore the world. (0:06:15) Codey: And you also find you tell the people like when you see the (0:06:20) Codey: invasive bark beetle or the invasive purple loosestrife, (0:06:26) Codey: which is an invasive plant that often takes over like around (0:06:29) Codey: ponds. So you find these things. And it’s really cool because a (0:06:32) Codey: lot of it is legit. Like they told me about oxide daisy and (0:06:38) Codey: be on the lookout for oxide daisy. And then I was like, (0:06:40) Codey: this plant is glowing. And this is an oxide daisy. This looks (0:06:42) Codey: like a loosestrife. And I was like, Oh my gosh, it is. So it’s (0:06:47) Codey: just another thing that I can turn on play for like, five (0:06:51) Codey: minutes and then turn off if I don’t want to play it anymore. (0:06:54) Codey: The problem with Coral Island and games like it is I start a (0:06:58) Codey: day and then I’m like committed to that day. And then after the (0:07:02) Al: Yeah, but the games aren’t very long (0:07:02) Codey: day, you’re like, Oh, I can make those days last man. (0:07:08) Codey: I think I’ve also isn’t this one of the games you can like make (0:07:10) Codey: the days go slower? I think that’s one of the one of the (0:07:12) Al: Maybe I mean coral islanders are yes, we will do everything that you suggest type of game. So probably (0:07:13) Codey: accessibility things that you can do. (0:07:18) Codey: So I think I’ve done that because that was one of my (0:07:20) Codey: issues with Stardew is I was like you blink in the days over. (0:07:21) Al: Yeah, oh (0:07:23) Codey: But (0:07:23) Al: No, I like I like the shortness cuz then it’s like bam done I can put it away (0:07:28) Codey: no, I need, I need to be able to do everything. (0:07:29) Al: We. (0:07:32) Al: But you’ve got another day. See, this is how, this is how I’m four years into the game, (0:07:36) Codey: And I’m not even, it’s true. (0:07:36) Al: and you’re not even one year into the game. (0:07:40) Codey: The FOMO is so hard. (0:07:43) Codey: Like I, I finally did the thing where you like write down what you need to do for (0:07:49) Codey: like the basically community center, but it’s the Lake temple. (0:07:53) Codey: Like I wrote it down in a notebook that I have in front of me at all times. (0:07:57) Codey: And I wrote down like when you find all of the things. (0:08:00) Codey: So I’m like, and I didn’t do this until fall. (0:08:03) Codey: So now I’m like, look at all these fish that are spring and summer that I didn’t (0:08:06) Codey: know that they were evening fish in the river forest. (0:08:08) Al: Yeah. The fish is the thing I don’t have the most, and oh my word. We’ll get to that. We’ll get to that. We’ll get to that. We’ll get to later in the episode. (0:08:12) Codey: Or that, or that one. (0:08:16) Codey: What have you been plucked to? (0:08:18) Al: This, just before I do it, I was reading reviews on Call of the Wild, The Angler, because the reviews are, shall we say, mixed. (0:08:21) Codey: Yep. (0:08:27) Al: There are lots of people really like it, but here’s a fantastic review. (0:08:32) Al: 4.1 hours on record, not recommended, posted 4th of September. Somehow they managed to- (0:08:38) Al: -capture the true essence of real-life fishing in this game. Boring as hell? Check. Managing gear is tedious as hell? Check. You can spend hours fishing and catch nothing? Check. (0:08:47) Codey: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. (0:08:51) Al: The only thing they failed to capture was what a chura is to clean the fish/gear at the end of the day, but I shouldn’t give the devs any ideas. (0:08:58) Codey: Correct! So if you like fishing I’m sure you’d love this game because then you (0:09:02) Codey: don’t have to clean it either but yeah it is TDM it is the TDM of like (0:09:06) Codey: having to pick like oh you’re like oh you want a rainbow trout you have to (0:09:11) Codey: make sure that you have the right bait the right gear you have to go to the (0:09:15) Codey: right place you have to do all this stuff the right way and then yeah you still (0:09:21) Al: I mean, I will agree, that sounds like not fun. (0:09:24) Al: It does not sound like something that I would want to have anything to do with, but it’s (0:09:29) Al: a fishing sim. (0:09:30) Codey: Yep. What did you expect? (0:09:33) Al: If you don’t like fishing, maybe don’t play a fishing sim. (0:09:37) Codey: Yep. (0:09:37) Al: It’s not like something like trying to be different and trying to be interesting. (0:09:41) Al: It’s trying to be realistic, right? (0:09:45) Al: play a realistic fishing sim if you don’t like fishing. (0:09:48) Codey: Yep. It was funny because after playing it, and Jeff watched me play it a little bit, (0:09:54) Codey: we ended up we were near a Bass Pro Shop, which is like a giant, it’s like a Cabela’s or a big (0:10:02) Codey: like hunting store, but for fit, but mostly just for fit. Well, they I guess they had they had guns (0:10:07) Codey: as well. And we went in there to just walk around. Yeah. And we went in and walked around and then (0:10:09) Al: Of course it’s America, of course you would. (0:10:15) Codey: and then someone tried to sell us a vacation. (0:10:18) Codey: We’re like, Oh, we’re done. It was a hunting trip. (0:10:20) Al: I do enjoy how you mentioned like a fishing shop, which I was like “okay, a shop that (0:10:25) Al: has everything you need to do fishing, fair enough” and then you try and explain it by saying (0:10:29) Al: “it’s like a hunting shop, but for fish” and I’m like “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hunting shop”. (0:10:36) Codey: Yep. (0:10:38) Codey: Well, so I started explaining like, (0:10:40) Codey: oh, it’s like a Cabela’s. (0:10:41) Codey: And then I was like, I bet. (0:10:42) Codey: Al does not know what a Cabela’s is. (0:10:43) Al: I don’t know what that is either. Like I’m pretty sure shop that sells you fishing (0:10:50) Al: pretty self-explanatory. I know what that would mean. (0:10:54) Codey: but it does also have a hunting area and like you you can make bait bait traps (0:11:00) Codey: for your deer to like bait deer into your property like scent for deer like (0:11:04) Al: Oh. Classic fish. And also guns. What have I been up to? I have been playing Astrobot. (0:11:06) Codey: all there’s there’s more than just that yeah America anyway what have you been (0:11:21) Codey: You have to explain to me. (0:11:22) Al: So are you not aware of what Astrobot is? So, and he’s a little bit of background here. (0:11:24) Codey: I am not aware. (0:11:27) Codey: Okay. (0:11:29) Al: So Astrobot is a PlayStation character and he (0:11:34) Al: I think his first game was Astro’s Playroom, which was a free game that came with the PS5 (0:11:45) Al: and was basically like a tech demo of like all the things that the new controller could do. (0:11:51) Al: And it was super fun. And it’s like he’s this little cute robot. And the idea was you’ve got (0:11:55) Al: these little levels where you’re going around and you’re basically rescuing old Sony PlayStation (0:12:00) Al: stuff so you’re like getting a playstation one and then (0:12:04) Al: you’re getting like accessories for it you’re getting the original controller and then you get (0:12:09) Al: a ps2 and you get accessories for and it’s like that you end up building out this really nice (0:12:12) Codey: Grabbing the–grabbing those memory cards that you had to grab. (0:12:15) Al: yeah yeah exactly exactly loads of things like that and you’re built basically building out this (0:12:19) Al: museum and it was super fun um so they’ve built onto that and made a bigger game that they could (0:12:26) Al: actually sell um called astrobot and so it’s um I mean I basically it’s like (0:12:34) Al: way I would describe it is if sony decided to make a 3d mario game that’s basically what it is (0:12:42) Al: so it’s super fun i’m not very far through it because it came out a week ago and i’ve (0:12:46) Al: not had a huge amount of time so i’ve you know i’m through a few levels and um stuff but yeah i’m (0:12:52) Al: i’m enjoying myself it has the same fun whimsy of astro’s playroom it has the really nice controls (0:13:00) Al: of a good mario game it has the (0:13:04) Al: unique mechanics that mario wonder had um where lots of different levels have like one specific (0:13:10) Al: thing that doesn’t that level uh less kind of like trippy and more just like a mechanic type (0:13:15) Al: thing like oh sometimes you have monkey arms and you use them for climbing and sometimes you know (0:13:21) Al: the standard kind of mario stuff um so yeah it’s super fun um and it’s it’s I don’t know if it’s (0:13:28) Al: meant to be I don’t know if it’s going to be as nostalgic as the other one but it’s it feels like (0:13:34) Al: trying to do a similar sort of thing um in that your ship that you’re trying to rebuild is a ps5 (0:13:42) Al: and there’s a few things that i’ve kind of found that they’re not hardware stuff they’re like game (0:13:47) Al: based stuff this time so like you’re rescuing little robots like astrobot and there some of (0:13:53) Al: them are in costumes so I found the crash bandicoot one and I found the spyro one and stuff like that (0:13:55) Codey: oh my gosh (0:13:58) Al: so I think it’s more going for the nostalgia of the games this time which I mean makes sense (0:14:03) Codey: nostalgia machine activate. (0:14:05) Al: Um, I was wrong. They did have another Astro Bot game before Astro’s Playroom, (0:14:09) Al: and that was a PlayStation VR game for the PS4 in 2018 called… (0:14:14) Codey: So still showing off new technology. (0:14:16) Al: Yes, yeah, so I guess that’s kind of the same thing. But yeah, it does really fun stuff with (0:14:21) Al: the controller, and it’s enjoyable to play. And, you know, it’s a game for me to actually play on (0:14:26) Al: my PS5. [LAUGHS] There’s like 20 PS5-exclusive games, and half of them… (0:14:28) Codey: to justify that expense. (0:14:34) Al: And we’re four years into this console. (0:14:40) Codey: seems legit have you played a heavy rain have they remade that (0:14:44) Al: I have not. I don’t know. [LAUGHS] (0:14:49) Al: Fair enough. I remember when it came out, and I remember being like, “Oh, it’s great.” (0:14:56) Al: I’ve not made a remake. I’m not seeing anything about a remake. (0:15:02) Al: What else? I’ve also been… (0:15:04) Al: playing lots of Marvel Snap and this week, if people were listening last week, I was (0:15:09) Al: sitting kind of like ranks 70 I think. I am now at rank 100, infinity rank, so I’m at (0:15:15) Al: the top of the ladder. So wooo! Exciting. I know I’m not sure what to do. Well, yeah, (0:15:17) Codey: Woo. (0:15:20) Codey: Well, no, now that now the real game begins, right, max rank. (0:15:26) Al: I don’t really care. So the problem is, I don’t really care about grinding that number (0:15:31) Al: out because you don’t really get any good rewards for it. (0:15:33) Al: And so it’s– (0:15:35) Al: for the sake of playing, and I’m never gonna get up to the top. So I like goals that are realistic. (0:15:40) Al: So I’m just playing conquest instead, which is like you have to play a– you have to win a match (0:15:46) Al: in a row to get the first ticket, and then you get two in a row to get the next ticket, and then three (0:15:52) Al: in a row, and then you have to– so you essentially have to win, I think it’s like 10 battles in a row, (0:15:57) Al: and then you win a bunch of another currency that you use to buy something. So that’s what I’m (0:16:02) Al: what I’m doing just now, but it’s pretty hard. (0:16:04) Al: And the problem is that any time you lose you have to go all the way down to the beginning again (0:16:04) Codey: Yeah. (0:16:08) Al: Win one to get the next ticket and then win two to get the next (0:16:08) Codey: Of course you do. (0:16:12) Codey: Could you pay a premium currency to not lose your space? (0:16:16) Codey: Oh, that’s a that’s a missed opportunity from them. They (0:16:21) Al: you can grind out the lower tickets. So that’s what I’m doing just now, like grinding out (0:16:25) Al: as many of the silver tickets as I can so that I don’t have to keep going back down. (0:16:30) Al: And I can just like then grind out as many of the gold ones as possible. And then when (0:16:35) Al: I eventually win the gold one, then I can like try and grind that for the infinity one. (0:16:40) Al: I can’t remember. And I’ve been I’ve been getting back into reading comics. So as as (0:16:49) Al: As happens every year, I resubscribed. (0:16:51) Al: For a year of Marvel Unlimited when I should actually use this and went and read a bunch (0:16:57) Al: of comics. So I’m reading through the Ms. Marvel comics just now because I really like Ms. Marvel. (0:17:03) Al: She’s one of my favorite characters. And yeah, it’s been good. I’ve just finished the Inhumans (0:17:10) Al: versus X-Men comics line, which was good. I enjoyed that. But what I find really funny is, (0:17:17) Al: as you’re following stories. You come across characters that you’re not (0:17:21) Al: actively following, but you know some about. But then, because you’ve not been actively (0:17:26) Al: following them in the comics, their status is completely different from what you would expect (0:17:30) Al: it to be, right? And so you’re like, “I need to find out why, for example, why is Cyclops a child (0:17:30) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:17:35) Al: just now?” And so you look into the reasons for why Cyclops is a child, and you find out that (0:17:36) Codey: Yeah, see (0:17:40) Al: actually Cyclops went evil and died. And this is Cyclops from the past, who’s now having to deal (0:17:46) Al: with the fact that he knows that he grows up to be evil and dies. (0:17:52) Codey: Yup, this is classic Marvel to me, because like I mean, it (0:17:53) Al: Yeah. (0:17:58) Codey: requires it’s no longer like standalone, like it requires (0:18:02) Codey: that you have seen everything. I remember going and seeing one (0:18:05) Codey: of the most recent movies, like the multiverse of madness or (0:18:10) Codey: whatever. And I was like, wait, why is Scarlet Witch bad and (0:18:13) Codey: wait visions dead? And like it was just like, wait, what? (0:18:13) Al: think yeah I mean I’m not I think I think this is just one of these things (0:18:19) Al: where you just have to kind of if you’re not willing to do everything you just (0:18:23) Al: kind of have to accept that sometimes you won’t know the current state of (0:18:26) Al: things and you know I would go into these things I mean obviously I watch (0:18:30) Al: all of the Marvel stuff like all the shows and films because it’s not really (0:18:32) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:18:34) Al: on the level of reading all the comics like reading all the comics is basically (0:18:37) Al: impossible watching all the shows and TV series the films and TV series it’s not (0:18:37) Codey: Right (0:18:42) Al: that difficult, right? (0:18:43) Al: You have any sort of, like, time that you can do on a weekly basis. You can keep up (0:18:47) Al: to date reasonably easily, if you want to. Episode 31 - Murdock and Marvel: 1990 Part 2 As we start the 90s Marvel and DC are approaching monopoly status on comic store shelves, leaving other publishers to look for success at the margins. But if you are a big fan of the Big 2, 1990 was a good time to be reading comic books! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1990. Next, we get an out of timeline story involving Daredevil and a psychologist whose star patient is his wife. Back to the current timeline, The Inhumans are set to leave for Pottersville in search of Black Bolts' son and it turms into a road trip for them, Daredevil, Number 9 and Brandy. Meanwhile, Blackheart and Mephisto discuss the finer points of evil and Blackheart is tasked with making Daredevil and the others do evil. In Pottersville, the team finds a boy, Pope, with powers who the town is scared of and wants to kill him. They save the boy, but in the aftermath fall into a crack in the earth caused by an earthquake. We then see Daredevil and his companions experience different versions of Hell before a final showdown with Mephisto in which they are aided by the Silver Surfer. Next, we get a single (what I assume is out of timeline) story in which Captain America and Daredevil are trying to help an inventor whose fantastic invention could change the world. This social issue focused book will be our spotlight story this week. Daredevil finally returns to New York, but his memories are scrambled by the recent trip to Hell. Not knowing who he really is, he assumes the identity of Jack Murdock. Bullseye finds out about the confusion and decides to take advantage of the situation by impersonating the horned hero. The rest of the year we see Matt Murdock meet a homeless woman, Nyla, who takes him in and the two become close. Murdock becomes a boxer, like his father, at Fogwell's Gym and Bullseye continues stealing from the rich and beating up police to ruin the reputation of the once great hero. Ben Urich returns and seems to realize things don't add up and goes looking for Matt Murdock. In the final panels of the year, we see Wilson Fisk at a “Jack Murdock” boxing match and he too recognizes his former adversary. New Powers, Toys or Places: Still in upstate New York to start the year, we see the team head to Hell/Mephisto's realm across several books before returning to familiar New York City. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

My guest this week on the podcast is Neasa Hardiman. Neasa is a BAFTA-winning executive producer, director, and writer who has worked across the world on high-budget global film and TV projects. After making documentaries in Ireland, Neasa found success in the UK through children's TV with Tracy Beaker Returns, for which she won her first BAFTA. Following that, she directed long-running soaps like Casualty and Holby City.She won her second BAFTA in 2017 for directing the second season of the BBC smash hit, Happy Valley. She went on to work on the Marvel series Inhumans and Jessica Jones. Her feature film debut, Sea Fever, premiered in the prestigious Discovery Strand on the opening night of TIFF in 2019.
