Avery Hill was full of insightful things to say in this latest episode. As a musician and teacher (both ukelele and songwriting) we had a lot of questions for her. We talked with her about making mix tapes back in the day, drawing inspiration by seeing live music, and the power of the natural world. Portland-based singer-songwriter Avery Hill is set to release her sophomore full-length album, The One Who Remembers, on November 1, 2024. This album marks a significant return to her roots as a storyteller and reflects Avery's profound personal journey. "The title is an introduction to myself as an artist," Avery explains. "I am not a flashy performer or a storm chaser; I am the one who remembers." She further elaborates, "Fundamentally, every artist is a 'rememberer,' and the purpose of art is to invite us all to remember what it is to be human." The album title, she adds, is also the title of the opening track and represents "a certain amount of humility" and "a truer picture of myself," emphasizing that her role is to reflect and make sense of experiences rather than seek attention.Avery's music career began in a home filled with the sounds of her parents' favorites. She recalls, "My mother bought me my first guitar and patiently listened to me rave about Joni Mitchell. My father made me mixtapes and taught me to harmonize to The Beach Boys on the radio." Originally aspiring to be a teacher, Avery's life took a creative turn after teaching in classrooms across Germany, Vermont, Washington, and Oregon. Avery's passion for teaching remained strong alongside her music career. "Teaching music became as fulfilling as writing and performing," she says. She started teaching ukulele in 2013 and has become a staple in Portland's ukulele community. "I strive to educate everyone's inner musician, elevate their self-knowledge and confidence, and enchant them with insight, presence, and a handful of good jokes." Comics in Motion is proud to partner with Lenovations Press! Check out their high quality independent comics here. This Week, Tony is joined by Kevin, founding member of the brilliant We see the world in Ben-day dots website. Kevin suggested Avery Hill's majestic book: Victory Point Owen D. Pomery On a summer's day, Ellen returns to the coastal town she grew up in, the picturesque, yet architecturally strange, Victory Point. Revisiting old haunts and people from her past, she feels increasingly disconnected from her previous life, and exhausted by the constant struggle of trying to forge the path ahead. Exploring a town, which itself is an experiment in how to live, Ellen searches for some comfort in her own history that might just give her the strength to move forward. Victory Point quietly explores the idea of how we choose to live and be remembered, asking whether we should strive for a higher calling, or if a simple, domestic legacy is the most honest and admirable achievement we can hope for. And if the land from which we disembark feels as alien as the one we hope to reach, how does anyone make their peace with a life amongst the ever-changing ocean waves? Today on the show I'm joined by freelance editor and marketer Sarah Wray, and marketer and comics creator Katriona Chapman to talk about their experiences at this year's Thought Bubble festival both as representatives of publishers like Avery Hill and Liminal 11 and - in Kat's case - a creator of her own work. Jimmy attended the Thought Bubble Festival in Harrogate, UK and got loads of interviews! He interviewed about 27 people and got around 7.5 hours worth of content. So over the next 2-3 weeks, you will get to hear them all! In this episode, he talked with 3 creators whom have comics out with Avery Hill Publishing. While in London, Jimmy sat down with Katriona Chapman about her own comics, her job as Head of Marketing for Avery Hill and other works coming out from the publisher. At Thought Bubble, Jimmy chats to B. Mure about his amazing comics trilogy (Ismyre, Terrible Means, The Tower in the Sea). Charlot Kristensen talks about her upcoming work What We Don't Talk About as well as some of her other work. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!
Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:02:14 - Setup of interview 00:03:59 - Interview with Katriona Chapman 01:06:41 - Wrap up 01:07:15 - Contact us Katriona Chapman first came to our attention through her work at Avery Hill Publishing. She works in marketing there, and back in summer of 2015 she introduced Tillie Walden. Tillie's first book, The End of Summer, had just been released, and Kat worked was instrumental in setting up an interview with the very young artist. But over the subsequent year, we've come to know Kat as more of an artist herself. She had done a lot of illustration work for children's books, but it was her self-published comic, Katzine, that specifically caught our attention. In fact, we had discussed Katzinein a special episode from last year, where we looked at self-published comics. In one of the later issues of Katzineshe mentions working on her first book, an autobiographical work centered on her travels in Mexico. Last month that book, Follow Me In, was released by Avery Hill. This is a fascinating travelogue about her experiences touring Mexico, it's diverse regions, its many ruins, and its vibrant cultures. As you'll hear in this interview, Kat doesn't only write about her experiences touring in this new book, but she also explores her problematic relationship with her companion as well as her own efforts as an artist. As such, Follow Me Inis much more than a travelogue. It's an account of a young artist undergoing new experiences and using those to grow as a creator and to define her art.
Time Codes: 00:00:23 - Introduction 00:02:29 - Setup of interview 00:04:11 - Interview with Tim Bird 01:00:17 - Wrap up 01:00:53 - Contact us The Great North Wood, which was just released through Avery Hill Publishing, is Tim Bird's longest work to date. It's the story of -- or perhaps a better way of putting would be that it's a history or a meditation on -- an area in South London known for its wooded past. This includes areas such as Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Honor Oak, and Sydenham Hill Woods. In fact, as Tim mentions in the interview, Sydenham Hill Woods is really the last vestige of the heavily forested area south of London, and it's where Tim and his family currently reside. What makes The Great North Woodstand out is Tim Bird's use of geographic space to tell his story. As he and Derek discuss over the course of their conversation, character is at a minimum in Tim's work, and he uses location and space to carry his narrative. What's more, the creator often underscores the mystery and magic that has traditionally been a part of Britain's wooded areas. Much of Derek's talk with Tim centers on the new book, but they also discuss his previous comics, such as the various works in his Grey Areaseries, also published by Avery Hill. These are also largely based on location and geographic space, and Tim goes into detail about his evolution as an artist, working through his Grey Areacomics to get to a place where he can more fully explore his surroundings in his latest book.
WOOHOO! We are two years old, TODAY!!! Yes, just 2 short years ago we decided to start recording our comics chit chatter and haven't looked back since. Approached by publishers to review their books (thanks to Avery Hill and Centrala) got given other folks books out of sheer kindness (thank you Bob Turner, Rozi Hathaway Good Comics) and discovered a whole world of small press and incredible creators. None of this would have happened had it not been for doing this podcast. We have loved every minute of it. We just get together and gab each month and you folks are so kind to listen to our ramblings each time. We want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. Here's to the coming year, plenty more pods and whatever is ahead in the coming year, for all of us and you folks out there! To celebrate here is our latest episode that was recorded just before Christmas where we had some dinner and talked “Calvin and Hobbes” Afterwards we reviewed some books that we were kindly sent and some that we just really wanted to speak about. Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, modern folk minstrel and intimate songwriter Avery Hill performs live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with Avery, and performances and interviews with our very own “Flathoof Stringband.” Mark Jones offers an archival recording of legendary Ozark balladeer Ollie Gilbert, telling the story of “The Preacher and the Bear.” Writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the second in a series of three Ozark Civil War Ballads, “The Battle of Pea Ridge.” Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Avery Hill captures the essence of modern singer/songwriters in her music. Though Avery studied to be a school teacher, an environmental educator, and then a storyteller, all of these things eventually led her back to music, the thing she knows and loves best of all. Avery's first full-length recording, entitled “Dreams & Ghosts: A Family Album,” features intimate portraits, life lessons, & sometimes embarrassingly humorous songs inspired by her family’s history. Like a photo album, this collection of songs presents musical snapshots of different times in history, reflecting on universal themes of growing up and being brave. Old Time Ozark music played with passion and love, that’s the “Flathoof Stringband.” The group is comprised of guitarist Mike Sutter, who was a member of the original Ozark Folk Center house band when the park opened in 1973. (Sorry to age you there, Mike.) On fiddle is Roger Fountain, another long time OFC musician and one of the best dance fiddlers, anywhere. Wes Kent holds down mandolin duties and, along with his wife Judy, is an active volunteer in many Stone County music endeavors. Long time OFC musician Gresham McMillon holds it all together with his steady roll on the upright bass. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of legendary Ozark balladeer Ollie Gilbert, telling her own version of the traditional story “The Preacher and the Bear.” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. From his series entitled “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the second of three Ozark Civil War ballads. This episode features a recording of archivist Max Hunter himself, singing the Ozark Civil War ballad “The Battle of Pea Ridge,” that he learned from Allie Long Parker of Hog Scald Holler, Arkansas. The recording was made at the tenth annual meeting of the Arkansas Folklore Society in 1958, and is preserved in the Max Hunter Collection at Missouri State University. https://maxhunter.missouristate.edu/songinformation.aspx?ID=0126

On today's Paul List, Paul tries an experiment (a failed one? Let me know @twoplai): talking about multiple books and issues in one long episode. First, introductory words about the podcast itself (1:05), followed by a discussion of Marvel's 'Mockingbird' and Chelsea Cain (18:12), then part 3 of our 'Pluto' by Urasawa reading project (43:01), and then discussion of three titles Paul recommends: 'Monkess the Homunculus' by Seth Hahne (1:02:30), 'The Battles of Bridget Lee: Invasion of Farfall' by Ethan Young from Dark Horse (1:15:30), and the forthcoming 'Untitled Ape's Epic Adventures' by Steven Tillotson from Avery Hill (1:27:00). For today's Smaller Press Saturday, @TwoPlai discusses Rachael Smith's 'Artificial Flowers' published earlier this year by Avery Hill. 'Artificial Flowers' tells an earnest and appealing story of Siobhan, a young artist trying to get noticed in the London art scene, whose pyromaniac brother suddenly becomes both her responsibility and her ticket to respectability. @TwoPlai talks about artistic expression as an individual's culmination of others' voices and presences in their life. Let's dig deep!
Gwen and Derek are back with another publisher spotlight episode, this one on the UK press, Avery Hill Publishing. They begin their spotlight with a short interview with the people behind Avery Hill: Ricky Miller, Dave White, and Katriona Chapman. Derek talks with them about the origins of the press, the kind of creators that have come to define Avery Hill, their distribution and publicity outside of the UK, and their plans for fall releases and beyond. After that conversation, Gwen and Derek get into the nitty gritty of the publisher's current offerings. They start by looking at the most recent issues of two ongoing series from Avery Hill, Reads #4 and Metroland #3. The former is an anthology periodical currently in its second volume, and the two discuss its various serialized storylines. Gwen is particularly fond of Owen D. Pomery's "The Megatherium Club," but they also discuss Reads other historically based stories -- Ricky Miller and Tim Bird's "Hitchcock and Film" as well as Bird and Luke James Halsall's "The Bullpen" (inspired by Marvel Comics in the early 1960s) -- and the colorful, offbeat comics of EdieOP. The most recent issue of Metroland continues the drama behind Ricky Miller and Julia Scheele's fictional 1980s band, Electric Dreams, and while discussing this evolving narrative, Derek and Gwen even wax nostalgic over their own musical histories growing up during that time. Next, they discuss three new books released this spring. A City Inside is yet another work from Tillie Walden -- she's become a singular force at Avery Hill -- and this one is a measured, meditative look at self-identity with an almost poetic tone. Rachel Smith's Artificial Flowers does to the London art scene what Miller and Scheele's Metroland does with the city post-punk. Both the artist's unassuming premise and her clean, iconic art style easily draw Gwen and Derek into this fun story. And then finally, the cohosts wrap up with the latest book in Matthew Swan's Parsley Girl series. Neither Derek nor Gwen had been familiar with Swan's work previously, but Parsley Girl: Carrots proves to be a good introduction into his weird and almost psychedelic narrative world. Overall, both Gwen and Derek find a lot of excitement behind this young press. Avery Hill may be just now getting a foothold in the US market -- thanks to its recent distribution agreement with Retrofit/Big Planet -- but as this episode demonstrates, it's definitely a publisher worth watching.
Wherein the Avery Hill gang regale you with scandalous tales of dropping out(!), cats(!), the disturbing underbelly of Milton Keynes(!), ruined trousers(!), rotten reviews(!), low sales(!), inevitable financial ruin(!) and a desperate need to be stalked(!). They also spend more time plugging work by other people than they do their own, which may explain many of the above topics of conversation. It's the Olympics, you must have at least a passing inclination to have a misguided attempt at going for a run so listen to us on the way round! Download it, subscribe on iTunes, write a review (but not like those ones we get for our comics), tell your friends! Tell that guy at the bus stop! Not the psycho one. Okay, yeah, we'll take the psycho one. http://www.averyhillpublishing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Avery-Hill-Publishing-Podcast-2.mp3 – Ricky The post Avery Hill Publishing Podcast – Summer 2012 Edition appeared first on Avery Hill Publishing.
