Host Anthony Desiato and guest Ralph Puma (Kill Me Kate) shine a light on the original HUSH storyline — from BATMAN #608-619 by Jeph Loeb & Jim Lee — which introduced Bruce Wayne's childhood friend Tommy Elliot as the titular villain clad in bandages & a trench coat. They relive the excitement of the story's release, examine its legacy and value almost 25 years later, question whether the ultimate reveals truly pay off the yearlong mystery, and compare notes on the 2019 animated film adaptation.NEXT MONTH: The podcast's two-part Hush event concludes with coverage of H2SH and other sequels from GOTHAM KNIGHTS and Paul Dini's DETECTIVE COMICS & STREETS OF GOTHAM!Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies.Join the conversation on the social media channels for parent podcast Digging for Kryptonite:FACEBOOK GROUP: Digging for Kryptonite: A Superman Fan GroupFACEBOOK PAGE: @diggingforkryptonitepodINSTAGRAM: @diggingforkryptonitepodTWITTER: @diggingforkrpodBLUESKY: @diggingforkrpod.bsky.socialEMAIL: flatsquirrelproductions@gmail.comWEBSITE: FlatSquirrelProductions.comLighting the Bat-Signal is a Flat Squirrel Production. This one is something special. We have absolute legend of the animation and comicbook world, who has written episodes of Flash Gordon, Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man, Transformers, Star Wars: Ewoks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Lost, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, PAUL DINI!Paul gives us the story of his career from starting at Filmation straight out of college, being one of the only people in the world working on Star Wars when it was dormant in 1986, all the way to inventing Harley Quinn. Just unreal stuff. Then we talk about the dark 1982 animated feature that launched Don Bluth's challenge to Disney, The Secret of NIMH. Today we look at Dark Night: A True Batman Story by Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso. It's really good. Before that, though, we go on some wild tangents and diversions about DC's upcoming film and television slate as well as the video game Disco Elysium. If you haven't played it or read Sacred and Terrible Air by Robert Kurvitz, you should.
A return to the dark, rain‑soaked streets of Batman: Arkham City — and explore how it became a landmark in storytelling, performance, and game design. This deep‑dive episode features reflections from the legendary Mark Hamill (The Joker), a heartfelt conversation with the late Kevin Conroy (Batman), an inside look at the game's soundscape with Audio Director Nick Arundel, and a narrative breakdown with writer Paul Dini. So, what did everyone do last weekend? For the guys of the Worst Comic Podcast Ever, well, we manned the Hero Initiative table at Planet Comicon. We set up at Boulevard Brewery for a drink and draw fundraiser. We hosted five panels with the likes of Dan Mora, Adam Kubert, Paul Dini, Chris Claremont, and many more. We did a live podcast panel complete with guest artists. And somehow, we even made time to record our next Book Club episode! This time, we are travelling back to the mid-1980s as we revisit the Teen Titans for The Judas Contract, where the Titans discovered a traitor on their team, Jericho signs up for the team (see what I did there!), and Dick Grayson finally decides on a new costumed identity. Written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Perez, this is THE Teen Titans story to read. Recorded on the con floor, Jerry, John, and Cullen are joined by loyal listener Eric Haar as we dissect this storyline. Stick around to the very end to find out about next month's selection for WCPE Book Club. We return to the MCU, and we stick with a story from the 1980s, but it's set in the far future. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! In this episode of Bro's, Foes and Heroes, we dive into the history of one of DC's most iconic and beloved characters: Harley Quinn. While many fans know her from the movies and modern comics, her origin is unique in the world of superheroes. Born not in the pages of a comic book, but on a television screen, Harley's journey started with a chance friendship and a surprising inspiration from a daytime soap opera. Zach and Mike break down the legacy of Batman: The Animated Series, the "Dark Deco" animation style that set the tone for Gotham, and the creative genius of Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. We also explore the definitive origin story, Mad Love, and how Arleen Sorkin's performance forever defined the voice and soul of Harleen Quinzel. #harleyquinn #batmantheanimatedseries #dccomics #batman #joker #pauldini #brucetimm #comicbookhistory #podcast #brosfoesandheroes #roguemedianetwork #markhamill #kevinconroy Thank you to our sponsors! Enjoy our audio drama celebrating the 25th of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker! The adaptation combines sound effects, music, and voice performances from the 2000 film, along with the 2000 ROTJ novelization; narrated by your co-host, Benjamin David, and produced/edited by our podcast editor, Z. Nikolaev. In 2025 we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker! Batman Beyond started as an animated series and made the jump to comics in 1999, then the direct-to-video animated film came out along with a novelization in the year 2000, and a comic adaptation in 2001. For the occasion, we've made this audio drama, inspired by both the animated film and its novelization, bringing the story to the world of audio storytelling. Step back into Neo-Gotham and experience the chilling return of Batman's greatest enemy in a brand-new way. This audio drama combines the original screenplay and official novelization based on it, with the performances and music of the film, preserving deleted material, extended character moments and cut scenes that never made it into the final movie. As a result, the project is an expanded, uncensored, uncut, complete story experience. In this in-depth conversation, legendary painter and storyteller Alex Ross takes listeners behind the curtain of some of his most ambitious and thought-provoking projects across DC, Marvel, and Dynamite.Ross begins with the haunting Batman: Black and White – Case Study, written by Paul Dini, a noir-style exploration of Bruce Wayne's fractured psyche and the fine line between justice and obsession. He then turns to Avengers/Invaders, co-written with Jim Krueger, a modern-day saga where the original World War II Invaders are thrust into the present-day Marvel Universe. The time-displaced heroes clash with contemporary Avengers, forcing both eras to confront what it truly means to be a hero in vastly different moral landscapes.Next, Ross discusses JSA: Thy Kingdom Come, created with Geoff Johns, Dale Eaglesham, and Fernando Pasarin — a powerful spiritual sequel to Kingdom Come. The story brings the older, war-torn Superman of that alternate Earth into the mainstream DCU, confronting the Justice Society and reexamining faith, legacy, and the enduring cost of heroism. Finally, Ross reflects on his work at Dynamite Entertainment with Project Superpowers, where he and Jim Krueger resurrected and reimagined dozens of Golden Age public domain heroes — from the Green Lama to the Black Terror — breathing new mythic life into forgotten icons while exploring how timeless ideals can evolve for modern audiences.
In this conversation, veteran animation writer and producer Alan Burnett reflects on his groundbreaking work shaping Batman: The Animated Series, the show that redefined superhero storytelling for television. Burnett walks us through the creative challenges of translating Gotham City's noir-infused atmosphere and complex characters into a format that spoke to both kids and adults, setting a new standard for superhero animation in the 1990s.We also dive into his collaboration with Paul Dini on DC Comics' adaptation of the series, where the two carried the show's tone and visual style onto the comic page. Burnett explains how the book's run—often praised for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the animated classic—expanded the mythology, introduced new dimensions to fan-favorite villains, and helped bridge the gap between animation and comics. This interview offers rare insight into how Burnett balanced studio mandates, creative instincts, and long-term storytelling, all while working alongside some of the most influential voices in modern Batman history.

Our hosts return to the podcave and sit down to review possibly the most hauntingly human episode of BTAS, Baby-Doll. Alex and Will dive into Baby-Doll's first appearance, unpacking the inspiration behind Paul Dini's creation of the character and why her tragic story still hits hard.Of course, it wouldn't be a review without a few classic Gotham oddities. Such as an unexpectedly lethal, karate-kicking henchman, or Robin's strange slogans as an amateur TV critic. Plus, a fairground in Gotham that isn't condemned or crawling with Joker gas, and how Batman nearly got capped in a jungle gym.And if you don't like what Alex and Will have to say about it... well, just remember, "we didn't mean to..."Tip Jar: https://buymeacoffee.com/batmantaspodJoin Our Discord - https://discord.com/invite/bQF76V3nUsOutbreaks Vol. 1 Launch Page - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/speechcomics/outbreaks-volume-1-an-ongoing-zombie-anthology-series?ref=discovery&term=outbreaks&total_hits=1475&category_id=252Follow us on TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@batmantaspod?_t=8zn1yhsgnfz&_r=1Follow us on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@batmantaspodFollow the Pod on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/batmantaspod/Follow the Pod on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BatmanTASPod/Follow the Pod on Twitter - https://twitter.com/batmantaspod1Subscribe to Will's Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/willrobsonSpeech Comics Website - https://www.speechcomics.com/Will's WhatNot Page - https://www.whatnot.com/user/speechcomics

Will wanted to talk about Paul Dini and Alex Ross's graphic album, Batman: War On Crime, so the logical episode theme was more Paul Dini stories, so this is not Matt 100% forcing more Dini on Will. And while Matt didn't do it intentionally, well, he did wind up picking a story with Zatanna, because there are so many of them. But he also picked a story with some fun characters that sadly have been forgotten that Dini created, and that's a point in his favor, right? Right? Whelp, looks like Clownfish TV was actually RIGHT about indie animation being the future of the animation industry. Disney vet Dana Terrace (The Owl House) has joined a long list of other professionals who are joining the indie revolution outside of the Burbank studio system. Put another nickel in the jar, please. Disney veteran Dana Terrace joins indie animation revolution with Glitch Productions, signaling a major shift away from traditional studio systems and potentially threatening the dominance of established animation powerhouses. Netflix is distributing indie content without taking rights, allowing creators to maintain full creative control and reach millions of fans, challenging the traditional studio model of content ownership and distribution. Renowned creators like Tom Ruegger, Paul Dini, and more are launching their own indie projects, suggesting a mass exodus of talent from major studios and potentially destabilizing the industry. The animation industry's recent struggles, including LA fires and economic factors, are pushing creators towards indie projects, potentially leading to a decentralization of animation production. The success of indie animation mirrors trends in the gaming industry, where AAA studios are struggling while indie games thrive, indicating a broader shift in entertainment consumption patterns. The rise of indie animation challenges the long-held belief that hit cartoons require large studio resources, potentially democratizing the industry and opening doors for new, diverse voices.

Batman The Adventures Continue Season 1 Graphic Novel is the Animated Series continuation from original TV writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. Bringing together pretty much a season 5 but in comic book form with never used in the show characters and returning classics too. What makes this work so well compared to other series later days stories is by still having the original guys write the script. So the story never has that uncanny fan fiction feel to it that just makes some other classic shows just feel off in comic book form. All 8 of these issues are really something special and pair up nicely with some of the top tier episodes of the 90s cartoon show. Bringing in new characters that never appeared in the original show like Deathstroke and Red Hood Jason Todd. Then also creating some brand new ones too that just feel like they fit in perfectly. Plus of course all sorts of returning villains that one might and might not expect. Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Mad Hater, Scarface, Clayface, Lex Luthor, Killer Croc, Penguin, Firefly, and Clock King just to name a few. There's just so much going on in here that it almost needs a good 2 reads to catch all the well dialed in references. Catch back up with Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennywise, Barbara Gordon, Clark Kent, and Tim Drake (Oddly Dick Grayson is missing but there is two other graphic novels in the series) with us in this perfect example of nostalgia done right. So, come on by and join us on another adventure of OMO Podcast. Old Man Orange is Spencer Scott Holmes & Ryan Dunigan - 2024 - "Young Adults, Old Man Attitude. Fans love to argue about Batman, so why can so many of us agree that Batman: The Animated Series is one of the best interpretations of the character and his world in any medium? We don't think it's just the nostalgia talking! We'll look at a selection of episodes from the first part of the series to illustrate how Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and the production team inclusively cherry-picked the best of multiple eras and multiple interpretations of Batman to create a show that was sophisticated and dramatic enough for an older audience but exciting and dynamic enough for the younger crowd. Discussed in this episode: “On Leather Wings,” “Two-Face (Parts I and II),” “Heart of Ice,” “Beware the Gray Ghost,” “Feat of Clay (Parts I and II),” “Joker's Favor,” “Fear of Victory,” and “Appointment in Crime Alley”

In this latest episode of the Deep Dive spinoff, Gaius is joined by Dustin Rybka of the Sex Party podcast to discuss 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, and written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves. The movie is based on Batman: The Animated Series and is the first original theatrical film produced by Warner Bros. Animation. In the film, Batman reconciles with a former lover, Andrea Beaumont, and faces a mysterious vigilante who is murdering Gothan City's crime bosses. The situation comes complicated when the Joker enters picture and Batman is now faced goingup against two villains in this epic adventure that failed to ignite the box office upon initial release, but went on to become a cult classic on home video with some saying its one of the best Batman adaptations to date. The film features the vocal talents of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Bob Hastings, Robert Costanzo, Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Stacy Keach Jr., Abe Vigoda, Dick Miller, and John P.
