We Only Find Them When They're Dead.

She Could Fly, the groundbreaking graphic novel, is a one-of-a-kind reading experience. And now that experimental graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and Berger Books is a documentary escape game designed to challenge how we think about the deeply misunderstood mental illness, OCD. In Episode #651, Wayne talks with leader/co-designer Sara Kenney and co-producer Mairéad Ruane. They worked with a team of ‘Lived Experience' experts to inform the content and create a global engagement campaign to shift how we think about OCD and mental health. Scientists, psychologists and medical humanities experts were part of the iterative design process, checking and commenting on scripts and game drafts for over two years. It's described this way: “Combining comic art, documentary films and interactive gameplay, the She Could Fly Documentary Escape Game is a point and click, psychological game from Wowbagger Productions that takes players on a looping adventure to explore OCD.” We discuss how this project came to be, who the characters are, and how you can access the book as well as the now-available game. Don't miss this entertaining interview! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers Patreon member. One of our favorite writers is J.M. DeMatteis. In this episode, we examine one of his more recent works, The Girl in the Bay. The comic features lineart by Corin Howell, colors by James Devlin, and letters by Clem Robins! It's published by Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics, and maintains that Vertigo spirit. Not to shortchange DeMatteis' talented collaborators, but both of us have read a significant chunk of his works and it's primarily through that lens that we discuss this comic, picking apart recurring themes and, perhaps, his pet interests that we've seen crop up in some of his other stories as well. Thanks again to Corey J. Beats for producing our theme music. Joining us for episode 101 is the artist behind She Could Fly, a Berger Books miniseries with writer Christopher Cantwell, the co-creator of Image titles Snowfall and Great Pacific with writer Joe Harris, and possibly his most notable work to date: the hit horror anthology through Image Comics Ice Cream Man with writer W. Maxwell Prince.More recently, he and the aforementioned W. Maxwell Prince have set their sights on Art Brut: which, as the world of fine art is falling apart, only Art Brut knows how to fix it. Alongside the Bureau of Artistic Integrity, Art Brut follows the titular Arthur Brut, the Mad Dreampainter (and his trusty sidekick, Manny the Mannequin) as they dive back into the very paintings that made him insane… in order to save reality itself from crumbling. We are honored to welcome Martín Morazzo onto The Oblivion Bar Podcast!Follow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramConsider supporting us over on PatreonStock up on G Fuel (CODE: OBP)Follow us on Whatnot (GET $10 WITH LINK)
Writers and artists: we're always talking about them. But even though they're the primary movers in the creation of a comic book, they're not everything. Particularly overlooked is the design of the books, especially in physical form. Today's guest, Richard Bruning, knows all about design and how much it contributes to the comic book medium. After serving as editor-in-chief and art director for Capital Comics (overseeing Nexus, Badger, Whisper, and others), he moved to NYC to become design director at DC. Among other accomplishments, Richard contributed to the design of Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and oversaw the branding for Vertigo and DC's first line of graphic novels and collected editions. After a period working on commercial design projects, he returned to DC as a vice president and creative director, where he helped create the DC Spring logo in 2005. Now, he works with his wife (former Vertigo executive editor Karen Berger) on Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics.Follow Rich on Twitter: @bruning_rich. _________________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Enigma by Peter Milligan and Duncan Fegredo is an exceptional piece of work that was ahead of its time. Originally published by Vertigo, it's recently been reprinted under Dark Horse's Berger Books imprint in a dignified hardcover edition that befits its status as a bona fide classic. In this episode, we give Enigma its due and try to dissect, analyze, and interpret the concepts and ideas within the story. Whether or not you've read it before, we invite you to listen! If you haven't read Enigma before, now's a better time than ever to check it out and discover why it's so highly regarded by all the right people.
This week on Watch With Jen, we have a very special guest and the man behind one of my favorite shows in recent memory. The TV writer, director, producer, showrunner, and co-creator of Halt and Catch Fire, which, along with The Americans, Succession, and Better Call Saul, is easily one of the best series of the 2010s, Christopher Cantwell is here to tell us all about the cult favorite AMC show that you can watch in its entirety right now on Netflix. (And you should totally do that and then come right back to listen to the podcast!)In addition to his TV work, which also includes co-executive producing Lodge 49 and Paper Girls, Chris has been very active as of late in the world of comic books, where he is currently writing Marvel's monthly Iron Man series, as well as his own original titles in collaboration with some truly fantastic artists and imprints such as Vault Comics' The Blue Flame, Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body from Boom Studios, She Could Fly, Volume 3 from Berger Books and Dark Horse. You can find the latest issues of these titles on comic book store shelves throughout the month.Running the length of a feature film, in this epic episode (which serves up some details about the critical favorite that have never before been revealed), Cantwell shares the funny and fascinating behind-the-scenes saga of Halt and Catch Fire from its initial idea to its eventual series run on AMC. Here you'll hear about the casting process including the way that the actors informed their characters, as well as the decision to constantly shift the show's setting and power dynamics each season, along with production stories, Halt's pitch-perfect use of music, and so much more.As a fan of the series from the very beginning and someone who greatly enjoyed chatting with Chris's brilliant wife Elizabeth about horror movies earlier in the year as well, this conversation was a true honor and a pleasure and I'm thrilled to share the story of Halt and Catch Fire with all of you all.Originally Posted on Patreon (11/16/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/58774714Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

She's been called the queen of modern American comics, received all possible awards and recognitions, changed how comics were viewed by the general public and made them mature in front of our eyes, reaching a wider audience for US comics many people thought would never be possible to achieve. From her run as editor of George Perez's Wonder Woman, to Swamp Thing with Alan Moore, to Sandman with Neil Gaiman and the creation and subsequent impact of the beloved (and missed) Vertigo, our guest's quest for innovation and unstoppable urge for finding new, unique voices for comics has made her a reference and revered figure for all of us. Her line of books at Dark Horse Comics, Berger Books, keeps breaking new ground and showing us there is no limits for comics except the ones we impose to ourselves. I am talking, of course, about the incomparable KAREN BERGER! We've talked about life, comics, new voices, why comics, and why she keeps coming back for more. About Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Pete Milligan, Jamie Delano, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis and many more. The legendary Ann Nocenti cemented herself as one of the most fearless and irreplaceable comic book writers of the 1980s. She has had a hand in telling and editing the stories of the Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants during the Chris Claremont era, Spider-Woman, Daredevil, Catwoman, Green Arrow and more. (Her Daredevil and Kid Eternity series are my favorite ‘superhero’ books she’s worked on —Shah) Aside from her Big 2 work, Nocenti continues to be a fearless creator and is the writer/co-creator of The Seeds and Ruby Falls from Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint. These books are unique and are must-reads for long time and new comics fans. In this episode, Nocenti talks to Shah Emami about breaking into comics, being mentored by Denny O’Neil at Marvel, picking up the reins of Daredevil after Frank Miller, going to Vertigo, working as a journalist and comic book writer, bringing her Ruby Falls and The Seeds series to life at Dark Horse through Berger Books, mentoring up and coming creators and a lot more. The Ruby Falls trade paperback will be released in April. Hola, boys and girls, it's that time again for more ridiculousness with...the Comic Book Book Club! We've reached that golden number 10 and what a treat we have for you today. Our first book is "Invisible Kingdom #6", a Dark Horse publication (subprinted via Berger Books), written by G. Willow Wilson with jaw-dropping art from Christian Ward (not a surprise in our circles). (Interesting note: this is Karen Berger's imprint, who for the vintage heads will remember was running Vertigo in the '90s). Second, we go with another one of those marked-calender books: "Joker: Killer Smile #1" by the "Gideon Falls" team, writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino, with colors by Jordan Bellaire. We absolutely implore you to get both, but listen and hear us tell you why you should. For next episode, we're going all out: in anticipation of one of Marvel's big releases set for next year, we're going back to 2006 and covering Gaiman's "Eternals" book. I think it's a great way to acclimate yourself with the characters before the film comes out, so power through it with that spectacular art by freaking JOHN ROMITA JR. That's right: Neil Gaiman and John Romita, Jr. did a Marvel Cosmic book together and now the MCU is using it (fingers crossed). As always, let us know what you think!

Dal and Patrick were both jurors for CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo) applicants again this year, and our scores were due today. Image Comics is offering full returnability on some of their upcoming #1 issues, and an earned higher discount on issue #2’s. Dal tricked Patrick into watching the Spider-Man Far From Home trailer, and he wasn’t even trying to do so. Dark Horse’s upcoming INVISIBLE KINGDOM from Berger Books is really, really good. More on it next week. We had yet another Challengers customer visit All Star Comics in Melbourne this week. Big Bang Comics from Dublin had a really interesting Twitter thread about today’s comics retail market and how retailers don’t seem to blame themselves. Kelly Thompson should not be the only one promoting her new digital release from Marvel. No, we won’t sell you 15 copies of Ironheart #2 on the day it comes out. Marty + Sarah (Love Wrestling) are coming to Challengers on Easter Sunday!

Michael and Derek are back at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, in Charlotte, NC, for the first of their planned August on-location episodes. And as the Two Guys have been doing with their new format, Michael highlights recent mainstream publications and Derek focuses on more indie or non-DC and Marvel titles. Michael starts the ball rolling by discussing the recent work of Ta-Nehisi Coates, specifically his current writing on Captain America (Marvel Comics). He specifically focuses on the politics embedded in the narratives -- and not only with Cap, but in his Black Pantherwork, as well -- and how Coates is learning the form and growing as a comic-book writer. Derek discusses three recent #1 issues, including Rob Guillory's Farmhand and John Layman and Nick Pitarra's Leviathan(both from Image Comics), as well as She Could Fly, written by Christopher Cantrell and with art by Martin Morazzo (Dark Horse Comics). He links the comedy, and the outrageousness, of Guillory's and Layman's new titles, because the two made their big splash with Chew. The guys also talk about She Could Fly, not only on its own story terms, but as the latest contribution from Berger Books.

The podcast began on August 1, 2012, and Paul and Derek discuss some of the things they've done over the past six years, the number of episodes they've published, the amount of interviews they've conducted, etc. It's a celebratory time, and the Two Guys hope that listeners will join in on the celebration and chime in with some of their favorite moments from The Comics Alternative's past. After a brief discussion of the podcast's anniversary, Paul and Derek then leap into the episode's core, a discussion of five recent #1 titles. They begin with Ann Nocenti and David Aja's The Seeds, the latest in Dark Horse Comics' Berger Books imprint. The guys are fascinated by this first issue, not only with Nocenti's multi-layered storytelling, but also with Aja's signature art and design. They then look at the first issue of Tini Howard and Nick Robles's Euthanauts, part of IDW Publishing's Black Crown imprint. While they're intrigued by the series' premise, they're not entirely sure if this is a successful #1 issue. There are confusing moments and, arguably, too many unanswered questions that dampen any desire to read on before the trade. After that, Paul and Derek discuss two recent #1 titles from Image Comics. First, they look at Aleš Kot and Tradd Moore's The New World, an intriguing futuristic narrative that juggles contemporary socio-political concerns along with a Romeo and Juliet-inspired storyline. They also review the first issue of Mirka Andolfo's Unnatural, an erotic -- but tasteful -- anthropomorphic tale that was originally published in Italian and now is available as a limited series. Finally, the guys wrap up with the first issue of Cullen Bunn and Jonas Scharf's Bone Parish (BOOM! Studios). This appears to be a horror title -- after all, that's primarily what Bunn is known for -- but as Paul and Derek point out, this first issue reads more as a crime mystery than it does horror. It's an interesting premise, one that the guys are curious to see unfold. So enjoy this week's episode, and celebrate The Comics Alternative's sixth anniversary!
