Today's podcast with Tom King is a conversation we eagerly anticipated the moment we finished the first issue of Helen of Wyndhorn. From its earliest panels, illustrated brilliantly by Bilquis Evely, colored by Matheus Lopes, and lettered by Clayton Cowles, we knew this saga of grief, self-discovery, magic, and adventure would occupy large, permanent portions of our imaginations. We merely waited for it to conclude, reveal its full magnificence, and find a proper hardcover release worthy of its contents. We then needed to dissect everything with Tom, our friend and frequent guest. Dark Horse Comics has now collected Helen of Wyndhorn into a hefty hardback that will undoubtedly lure new readers to its sumptuous narrative, and we're ready to dive into its pages and go full-spoilers with its author. Before we even hit record, Tom King was happily pouring over this story with us, recalling his initial intentions for the tale and comparing them to his current perspective. Helen of Wyndhorn reteams King with his Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cohorts, but it's a saga that took almost three times as long to complete, and that effort proudly reveals itself in every line, word, and pixel. The book is often sold as "Conan the Barbarian meets The Wizard of Oz." Sure, those influences are preset, and we discuss them, but it's a book that thrives on gothic romance and real-life heartache, too. When we first meet the title character, she's more than adrift; she's devastated and on the verge of destruction. Her father, pulp author CK Cole, is dead and gone. Her grandfather hires a governess to drag her back to his estate. What she discovers there will change everything she knows about her father as well as reality itself. And her journey toward purpose awoke something in us. Something that's evolving even as we write these words. How big or significant must an action be for it to be heroic? We don't know how to feel about violence as sports entertainment, but we cannot deny how much we love stories that center their emotional conflicts inside a ring. With their new series, Black Canary: Best of the Best, Tom King and Ryan Sook join the long tradition of tearing into internal torment by subjecting protagonists to regulated gladiatorial combat. Dinah Lance versus Lady Shiva, let's get ready to rumble. The first issue of the new series arrives in stores Wednesday (11/27). We won't spoil it here, but those pages will reveal some of the motivations for why Dinah, the second-best fighter in the DC universe, would subject herself to the fists of the single-best fighter. It has something to do with the first woman to don the Black Canary mantle - her mother. Yup, this is a Tom King comic, so you know Black Canary: Best of the Best must feature a twisty, prickly core relationship. This week's episode explores why the ring is such a compelling story engine. We discuss how Tom King was initially enticed to place Black Canary alongside other brutal fictional bouts like Rocky, Raging Bull, The Set-Up, The Big Blow, and yeah, Best of the Best. Ryan Sook takes us through his process of understanding the physicality of boxing, wrestling, and MMA while contemplating their bloody nature. And why has it taken King so long to tackle the mother/daughter dynamic? To continue this conversation, follow Tom King on Bluesky, Threads, and Instagram. Follow Ryan Sook on Instagram. Jace welcomes Tom King and Ryan Sook to the show to chat about the upcoming Black Canary: Best of the Best. Tom talks about the birht of the project from conversations that are likely familiat to many comic fans, about who would beat who in a fight. Also, in his constant evolution as a writer where he is always searching for new ways to tell a story, he talks about the inherent challenges of having two competitors brawling but not speaking. He solves the problem in a unique way and tells us about that decision. The balance visually between the fight and emotiona relationship scenes was something that Ryan was very aware of and he talks about welcoming that challenge. Also for the first time in his career, he had the entire script for the series in hand before he ever started. This gave him the unique opportunity to visually pace the entire story in a way that isn't possible most of the time. Join us to hear all about the series and be sure to pick up issue #1 in comic shops November 27th. Final Order Cutoff for issue #2 is November 25th.

Recently announced by DC Comics, Tom King is teaming up with superstar artist Ryan Sook on a six-issue mini series focused on Black Canary to determine who is the best hand to hand fighter in the DC Universe. From the press release below we can see that her primary foe will be Lady Shiva. It comes as no surprise that Shiva will be the antagonist as she has long been regarded as one of the best fighters in the entirety of the DC Universe. Black Canary on the other hand, is not generally in the top five most formidable fighters if you ask most DC fans. Perhaps if you are only talking about females, her name might be mentioned. I think most DC fans familiar with these characters are much more likely to mention Cassandra Cain or the aforementioned Lady Shiva. The question does remain however, if the assertion of Canary as one of the best hand to hand fighters generates controversy, this series may not be as well-received as some of King's previous out of continuity work. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad press, so it is entirely possible that any online discourse about presenting Canary as possible the most formidable fight in the DCU rivaling Lady Shiva, will only have a positive effect on sales. There may be people that pick up the series just to see how the claim that Canary could best Shiva could possible me true. Only time will tell and you can decide for yourself starting on November 27th, when issue #1 hits comic shops.

While Cullen is taking care of things in Portland for Rose City Comic Con, John and Jerry sit down for our weekly comic chat. And this week, we talk about it all. New books, old books, print books, digital books. Plus some TV and Con talk. We have two Kickstarters going on by friends of the show, and we would love you to take a look and consider supporting the projects: Cat & Mouse #2 from Silverline Comics. Roland Mann and his team is back with the follow-up issue to last year's Kickstarter. Check out the interview we did for that Kickstarter with WCPEver Episode 204. Demons in the Darkness is a look at school bullying told as a horror comic. Creator David Doub has crafted a story set in 1990s Texas, and mixed together a fantasy story using real-life experiences from his days in high school. For our Pick 3 this week, we had Cullen provide his selection in advance. So we turned things around this week, with Jerry guessing John's pick and John guessing Jerry's pick. So you got to ask yourself, how well do these guys know each other's reading habits? John got a chance to watch episode 1 of the second season of Titans on the DC Universe app. He has a lot of thoughts to share on this episode, so get comfortable. We also talk about the "new" releases on the Marvel and DC digital platforms for your reading pleasure. What could you be reading this week that came out six or twelve months ago? This is your final reminder! Cullen can be found at Rose City Comic Con this weekend. He will be at booth 1003, a.k.a. the Hero Initiative booth, with special guests Ryan Sook and Liam Sharp. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint’s Comics. Welcome to WCPEver 5.0! Very quietly over the summer, the podcast entered it's fifth year of comic talking, which according to our top-notch research team, makes us the longest-running lowest-rate show in our demographic. We are proud to be the Worst. And we are pleased that you, our loyal listeners, come back for the Worst each and every week. Now, to add to the numbers of year five of podcasting, the odometers for each of us are going to roll over to 50 over the next nine months. John leaves the 49 club behind in a matter of hours as this podcast is posted, with Jerry following in two months. The youngster of the bunch, Cullen, will join 50 next June. (And yes, he still gets carded!) We are all excited for the new opportunities being 50 gives us, such as additional medical exams and those sweet AARP discounts. We wanted to mark year 5 & year 50 on the podcast in some way, and we came up with WCPEver 5.0. Special thanks as always to friend of the show and Photoshop wizard Brent Kincade for the new updated logo for us to use over the next year. We will find some more ways to celebrate 5.0 over the next year, and we want you to be part of that. Now, on to the show. We are taking a look at the November 2019 solicits, so you can start planning now for books to be picking up ahead of your Thanksgiving holiday. Give it a good listen. If there is a book that sounds interesting, be sure to tell your local comic shop so they can order you a copy. We do have our Pick 3 selections for next week, sponsored by the great people at Clint's Comics. Our picks for next week come from the big two publishers, which doesn't really narrow down the list that much as Cullen and John attempt to guess Jerry's selection. Remember, you can find Cullen at Rose City Comic Con in September next weekend. Cullen, John & Jerry are back in the recording studios this week, ready to spread the wonderful message of comic books to the masses. Or maybe we're just hanging out in our basements chatting like we normally do on a Wednesday night. Either way, our loyal listeners are the big winners, so let's get going with the show. Obviously, the big news from the past week was the D23 convention in California. Disney made up for the lack of trailers and announcements at San Diego Comic Con earlier this summer with a wide range of show news, sneak peeks and more info on the rollout of Disney+, the new streaming service that will begin service in November this year. We review the new show announcements for Disney+, such as Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and (FINALLY) an Obi-Wan Kenobi show starring Ewan McGregor. Take our money now! But wait, there's more. Did you see the trailer for The Mandalorian? What about the Star Wars Episode 9 trailer? Disney, we will give you our bank account information, along with our mothers' maiden names, RIGHT NOW! Sadly, we have to wait about 10 more weeks for the official rollout. While we are waiting, it gives us the opportunity to catch-up on some other shows. John has been watching the first(/last) season of Swamp Thing on the DC Universe app, while Jerry has finished the most recent season of Supergirl. We do have our Pick 3 selections for next week, sponsored by the good people at Clint's Comics. Cullen and Jerry had to guess John's pick for next week, not that it was much of a competition. It was a no-brainer that John would be choosing Legion of Super-Heroes Millennium #1 for his pick. But what did the other guys pick? Tune in and find out. Remember, you can find Cullen at Rose City Comic Con in September in just two weeks. It's another week with just two of the guys in the studios. But do not fear! This does not mean that your listening experience will be 33% less spectacular. It does mean that you get more Cullen and Jerry this week. (No worries, though! You can rest assured that the dulcet tones of John will be coming to you next week via your earbuds!) As always, we start out the show with our Pick 3 selections, sponsored by the fine people of Clint's Comics. Jerry is tasked with guessing Cullen's pick for the week. Let's just say it didn't go well.... Next up, we get into the surprising news from this week, as Sony and Marvel Studios announced the end of their partnership of using Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We share our thoughts, but quite honestly, no one believes this story is completely finished yet. As we are quick to point out, the answer to most every question in life these days is MONEY. If there is money to be made, and there is, then a deal will eventually be worked out. We hope! Next up is a mail call! Cullen and Jerry each got some comic goodness in the mail this past week, and held off opening up the packages until this recording. Because nothing, absolutely NOTHING, is better for an audio-only podcast than people opening packages. We give you the best each week on the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! You'll also get some updates for Rose City Comic Con in September, like where you can find Cullen at on the show floor. Hint -- it's table 1003 at the Hero Initiative booth with special guests Ryan Sook and Liam Sharp. We would love to hear your comments on the show. It's another Bizarro episode! Mike and Jay recommend "Diesel" and "Hank Johnson, Agent of Hydra," and then Jay takes on Mike's traditional role, and guides us through the timey-wimey nonsense that is "The Return of Bruce Wayne!" Finally, we play "Super-Mundane," and Mike gets to ask, who would be the best (and worst) Dungeon Master? Pull List: Jay: "Hank Johnson, Agent of Hydra" (Marvel), written by David Mandel, art by Michael Walsh. Mike: "Tyson Hesse's Diesel" (BOOM Studios), written and drawn by Tyson Hesse. Main Segment: "The Return of Bruce Wayne" (DC Comics), written by Grant Morrison, art by Lee Garbett, Frazier Irving, Georges Jeanty, Yanick Paquette, Pere Perez, Ryan Sook, and Chris Sprouse. Game: "Super-Mundane - Best / Worst Dungeon Master?"

April 19, 2010 - Writer Ron Marz talks to Josh about his new series from Top Cow, about a woman named Patience who kills demons with a big spear, Magdalena #1. But there's more to it than that. Marz has been running things in Witchblade, and the Top Cow Universe for about 5 years, and this is the book he's always wanted to write. There's some political, church intrigue, the aforementioned demons and spears, and a fantastic art team of Nelson Blake II, Sal Regla, and Dave McCaig. Also, a cover by Ryan Sook! Don't miss Magdalena #1 at the shop this Wednesday!
