From a graveyard shift in a generic drug lab to leading quality for one of the most advanced cell therapy programs on the planet - Mike Ruane's story is one every quality professional needs to hear.In today's episode I was joined by Mike Ruane, Head of Quality for In Vivo CAR-T at Bristol Myers Squibb.I really wanted to speak to Mike because his career is one of the more fascinating journeys I have come across in quality leadership. He has spent nearly two decades within what is effectively the same organisation, yet has lived through multiple acquisitions, spin-offs and complete pivots in therapeutic modality - each time emerging in a stronger, more interesting role than before.Mike began his career at APP Pharmaceuticals on a midnight QC shift, testing in-process samples on a graveyard schedule. From there, he followed the Abraxane asset into aBraxis Bioscience, built out supplier quality relationships across Central and South America, and eventually relocated from Chicago to New Jersey when Celgene consolidated its operations. That move opened the door to something entirely new - a CAR-T therapy program called BB2121 - a field Mike had never worked in and knew little about. Eight years later, he is now heading quality for in vivo CAR-T, one of the most cutting-edge modalities in all of biopharma. What makes Mike Ruane such a compelling guest is not just the breadth of his experience but his philosophy. He is a first-principles thinker who has thrived precisely because he never assumed the existing process was the right one. He asks the uncomfortable questions, encourages his team to do the same, and believes deeply that curiosity is the most underrated skill in quality. We talk about the following:How working in a lean generic drug environment early in his career shaped his mindset foreverNavigating multiple acquisitions and spin-offs within a single career arcWhat it takes to step into an entirely new therapeutic modality with no prior experienceWhy curiosity and asking the right questions is the real engine of career growth in qualityHow he interviews candidates and what most people get wrong when they are being interviewedMike Ruane is a thoughtful, pragmatic quality leader who understands how to balance compliance, collaboration and business reality in complex development environments. If you are a quality professional working in an early-stage biotech and trying to build the right systems with limited resources, then this episode is for you.Thank you Mike Ruane for sharing your incredible journey.Hope everyone enjoys the show.

Encounter: Spiritual Gifts - Tyler Ruane by Orchard Hill Church
Today's episode takes a deep dive into one of the most high-profile AI controversies in recent months: the debate surrounding Grok AI. From reports that the system generated harmful content — including material related to non-consensual intimate imagery — to broader concerns about safety guardrails, moderation decisions, and accountability, the situation has sparked serious questions across the tech policy landscape. To help us make sense of what happened and why it matters, we're joined by Kate Ruane, Director of the Free Expression Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, and Riana Pfefferkorn, Policy Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and a CDT Non-Resident Fellow. Together, they examine what the Grok episode reveals about the mounting pressures facing AI companies, the real-world limits of existing safeguards, and the difficult balancing act between preventing harm and protecting free expression. This conversation explores the evolving responsibilities of AI developers — and what this moment signals for the future of speech, safety, and accountability in an AI-driven world. Produced by Drew Courtney and edited by Jake Kauffman.

This week on The Mind Full Podcast, I sit down for an exceptionally powerful and moving conversation with Roseanna Ruane to share the story of her extraordinary daughter Saoírse who touched hearts across Ireland after appearing on The Late Late Toy Show in 2020, and whose light continues to shine brightly after her passing last year after a long battle with cancer at just 12 years of age.Roseanna speaks with honesty, love, and courage about navigating life after unimaginable loss. This is a raw and deeply human conversation about grief, love and legacy. If you'd like to honour Saoírse's memory while also supporting Cancer Fund for Children and Hand in Hand in Galway, you can purchase from the BPerfect x Saoírse & Mamma range at www.bperfectcosmetics.com. This week, I sit down with 17-year-old Niamh Ruane a remarkable young woman whose wisdom and honesty left me in awe. At just 15, Niamh lost her dad to pancreatic cancer, nine months after his diagnosis. Less than 10 months later, her younger sister Roisin was diagnosed with cancer too. As her mum had to care for her sister in Crumlin Hospital Dublin , Niamh had to stay at home with her younger brother, navigating grief, loneliness, and the absence of both parents in the house. She speaks so openly about saying goodbye to her dad, the silence that follows, and the way loss changes everything, especially for someone so young. This conversation is raw, moving, and will resonate deeply with anyone who has ever felt the weight of grief at a young age. Zachary Ruane is best known as one-third of the global comedy phenomenon, Aunty Donna. In his own right, he's a comedian, a writer, an actor, and a world class artiste of the noblest of all pursuits, podcasting. In this episode, Zac talks with hilarious candour (and mild panic) about reaching one's mid-30s and wondering what friendship is supposed to look like. Let's just say the question "are you a good friend?" really takes off. He also pontificates about forming Aunty Donna before they were friends, about the fine line between friendship and podcasting, about the purity of friendship between man and dog, and so much more.Plus, while Rhys is tragically absent, Georgia & Kyran catch up in the intro, covering political campaigning, female wrestling, democracy sausages, a songwriting sabbatical, the weather, and a potential new segment "what has [insert name of host] missed?"CONTACTText - 0431 345 145Email - fwendspod@gmail.comMail - PO Box 24144, Melbourne, Vic, 3001RATE AND REVIEWOf course you've already subscribed or followed the show, now we'd love you to leave a rating and a review. For decades, David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz were Australian film reviewing royalty, having built up a loyal following with their weekly show on SBS, The Movie Show. The 90s and early 00s was the peak of David & Margaret's influence over Australian audiences. What they recommended, people would head out and go and see. Both David and Margaret are staunch supporters of cinema, becoming advocates for all kinds of cinema and decrying the impacts of censorship. While both have played roles in the way that film censorship in Australia has impacted what we see, it's Margaret's role with the notorious Larry Clarke film, Ken Park, which saw her make headlines after she put on an ‘illegal' screening of the film after it received a ‘Refused Classification' status, aka, the film being banned from Australia. That pivotal moment in Australian film criticism history is what sits at the heart of Zachary Ruane and Alexei Toliopoulos' comedy show Refused Classification, which is currently making its way around Australian comedy festivals, having recently played at the Adelaide Fringe, with shows to be held in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth on the horizon. The show sees Zachary don a salt and pepper wig as David, while Alexei somehow manages to imbue himself with the spirit of Margaret Pomeranz with her trademark golden locks. Together, they retell this point in Aussie cinema history through the form of comedy show, documentary and verbatim theatre. In the following interview, Zachary and Alexei talk about how the show came about, their experiences watching Ken Park, how Simon Miraudo's brilliant Book of the Banned (buy it here) helped inform the show, and Alexei goes deep on his personal connection with the At the Movies board game.I should add too, if you're interested in reading the transcripts of David and Margaret's work on both The Movie Show and At the Movies, then check out this Letterboxd account which has logged all of them over the years. And keep in mind that the shows are all available on SBS On Demand too, if you want that real nostalgia trip.To keep up to date on where the show is playing, make sure to follow both Zachary and Alexei on Instagram. We are a completely independent and ad free website that lives on the support of listeners and readers just like you. She Could Fly, the groundbreaking graphic novel, is a one-of-a-kind reading experience. And now that experimental graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and Berger Books is a documentary escape game designed to challenge how we think about the deeply misunderstood mental illness, OCD. In Episode #651, Wayne talks with leader/co-designer Sara Kenney and co-producer Mairéad Ruane. They worked with a team of ‘Lived Experience' experts to inform the content and create a global engagement campaign to shift how we think about OCD and mental health. Scientists, psychologists and medical humanities experts were part of the iterative design process, checking and commenting on scripts and game drafts for over two years. It's described this way: “Combining comic art, documentary films and interactive gameplay, the She Could Fly Documentary Escape Game is a point and click, psychological game from Wowbagger Productions that takes players on a looping adventure to explore OCD.” We discuss how this project came to be, who the characters are, and how you can access the book as well as the now-available game. Don't miss this entertaining interview! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers Patreon member. John Leguizamo enthusiast and children's television antagonist Zachary Ruane steps into the Last Video Store. Even more important than his mind-melting comedy work in the legendary sketch comedy group AUNTY DONNA, Zach is a lover of film presenting cinema with his FUN TIME FILM CLUB at the Lido in Melbourne. So this is a real meeting of the cinematic minds. Zach's picks include Alexei's shared favourite film of 2023, a comedy with style, an Aussie Hitchcockian thriller and a surrealist masterwork from David Lynch. AND of course Lex has cooked up the most fricking weirdly perfect pick of the series so far. Like it's nuts how he linked them up. In episode 409 I chat with Olivia Bamber, Mairéad Ruane, and Shaun Flores. This conversation was recorded live at The OCD Action conference. You will hear the OCD Action CEO Leigh Wallbank at the start introducing the panel. Thank you to Leigh, Cara, Eden and the rest of the OCD Action team for making it possible. I ask my panel guests about road blocks to recovery, dealing with the highs and lows of recovery, what made their therapy effective, how they found the strength to keep trying with therapy, advice for those feeling unsure or undeserving of treatment, and much more. Hope it helps. Show notes: https://theocdstories.com/episode/ocd-action-409 The podcast is made possible by NOCD. NOCD offers effective, convenient therapy available in the US and outside the US.
