It's the interview Alan has been wanting to do ever since we started the podcast, and it did not disappoint! We finally got chatting to the one and only Rick Remender, best known for era defining runs on Venom and Uncanny X-Force amongst others while at Marvel, but for us it's his Indie work that shines brightest. Deadly Class, Fear Agent, Black Science, Seven to Eternity, Low, Tokyo Ghost and many others, demonstrate that he is one of the most consistent and important creators working in the medium today. We talk all of those over 2 episodes, as well as getting started, nearly going bankrupt, his time at Marvel, his Giant Generator imprint at Image, adaptations to other mediums and what he hopes for the future. Strap in, this is up there with our favourite ever episodes. We hope you enjoy it just as much.

Without Your Head Horror Podcast with Kirsten Carthew director of Fantasia Fest favorite POLARIS The All-Female Led, Sophomore Feature From Celebrated Canadian Writer/Director KC Carthew premiered as Opening Night Film of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Quebec Set in 2144 against the harsh backdrop of a frozen wasteland, Sumi, a human child raised by Mama Polar Bear, narrowly escapes capture from a brutal Morad hunting party and sets out across the vast winter landscape. When Sumi stumbles across Frozen Girl, an unlikely friendship is forged and together they race ahead of the vindictive hunters towards the only guiding light Sumi knows, the Polaris star. A winter-set, post-apocalyptic fantasy fable set in the year 2144, POLARIS takes place in an unspecified part of the world reeling from the consequences of ecological fallout, uniquely conceived in a wholly new language and presented without subtitles. The all-female cast is impressively led by 13-year-old — who was only 11 at the time of filming — Korean-Canadian actress Viva Lee (Syfy's Deadly Class) alongside Khamisa Wilsher (Netflix's The Hollow, CW's Charmed) and veteran stage, television, and film actress Muriel Dutil (Curling, Ressac). Expanded from her award-winning short film FISH OUT OF WATER, which premiered at Fantasia in 2015, Carthew has set the stage with a magical world inspired by Greek mythology with themes incited by the urgency of the current environmental crisis and built upon the activist movement and ideology of ecofeminism. Recognized for spectacular world-building in her visual storytelling, POLARIS is Carthew's second feature following her celebrated debut THE SUN AT MIDNIGHT, which starred Kawannáhere Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs, Blood Quantum). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/support

Our next guest has scored everything from comic book adaptations to award-winning documentaries. He is a Filipino-American composer who has scored some of the most exciting projects of the last few years. His dark synth and guitar-driven work was heard on the Russo Brothers' adaptation of the acclaimed comic 'Deadly Class'. And his emotional and poignant music was featured in the powerful Peabody Award-winning docu-series 'Surviving R. Kelly'. For the latter, he also took home an ASCAP 2020 Screen Award.Born to Filipinx immigrants, his family taught him music at a young age. His curiosity would lead him to play in bands and to study film scoring at USC's prestigious Scoring For Motion Pictures and Television program. He would go on to be mentored by and collaborate with Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther) and Theodore Shapiro (Bombshell). With the former, he co-composed the A24 film starring Chance The Rapper, 'SLICE'. He recently scored the Adele Lim directed Joy Ride and I'm so excited to talk with him on the podcast. It's 10 o Clock. Do you know where your children are? Rick Remender brings to life that time in our history where things were simpler and a lot more violent. Next months book 8 Billion Genies!
We've been reading through Deadly Class in 2023, and we thought we'd supplement our Rick Remender coverage with a podcast about Seven to Eternity, which features art by Jerome Opeña! In this episode, we discuss the entirety of this seventeen-issue series. It's a compelling story that subverted our initial expectations based on the first issue, and it ended in the only place it could. Seven to Eternity is a lavishly illustrated space fantasy story about integrity and compromise. There's some fantastic worldbuilding, gripping character drama, rich subtext, and thoughtful conceptual ideas lurking within this comic. Dhirendra is an accomplished actor whose career spans all manner of characters and genres and continents. To contemporary audiences, Dhirendra might be best known as Imran, Sabi's father on the groundbreaking and big-hearted CBC and HBO Max comedy Sort Of. Sort Of is one of the few series in the history of television with a gender fluid protagonist: Sabi Mehboob, played with courage and conviction by series creator Bilal Baig. Imran arrives from Dubai at the beginning of the second season to quote-unquote fix Sabi. It's a role that could have easily been thankless and one-note: a villain with no empathy and nowhere to grow. But between the writing and Dhirendra's nuanced performance, Imran is an avatar for many parents who love their kids even when they don't understand them at all. Dhirendra's lengthy list of credits includes The Bill, Casualty, Deadly Class, Da Vinci's Inquest, Lego Jurassic World: The Legend of Isla Nublar, and the title character in the groundbreaking Jinnah: On Crime series about a brilliant crime reporter at a Vancouver newspaper. Dhirendra is also a foodie, a world traveller, a family man, a union man, and lover of stories. Join Dhirendra and Sabrina as they journey 'round the world and delve into Dhirendra's wildly fascinating filmography, philosophy, and life. Episode Sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

Each month in 2023, we'll be devoting one of our episodes to covering one volume of Deadly Class by Rick Remender and Wes Craig! As we begin with volume 1, we also spend a chunk of the episode discussing our familiarity with the works of the different members of the creative team, particularly Rick Remender. From there, we go into our issue commentaries. Deadly Class was collected into twelve trade paperback editions, so that's what we're reading. On this episode, I chat with Tom Stevens, a Canadian actor who is best known for his role as Jason Higgins on Fox TV's Wayward Pines. He has also appeared in Moonshine, The 100, The Good Doctor, Supernatural, Deadly Class, Cedar Cove, Falling Skies, and Arrow. We chat about his early life, career and what fame means to him.The Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine…Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. In the podcast, we ask questions like is modern spirituality a cult? Is Ayahuasca really that profound? Are psychics and tarot even real? What about fame, money, sex and social media? How do they affect our spirituality? Can the superficial really be profound? Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. He believes that his time as a fame-obsessed, hard-partying club-kid was a conduit for his spirituality and is passionate to connect with people who've also had unconventional or scandalous experiences exploring their own spirituality. Peter shamelessly explores the spiritual power of celebrities like Britney Spears, Courtney Love, Paris Hilton and The Real Housewives.Guests include RuPaul's Drag Race Superstars, Reality TV stars, Scientists, witches, psychics, tarot readers, naturopathic doctors and regular people who've been affected by modern Spirituality. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit superficialspirit.substack.com
