In our latest episode, we sit down with veteran comic book artist Mark Pennington to explore his remarkable career spanning four decades in the industry. Mark shares his journey from graduating the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1985 to starting his career doing designs for iconic toy lines like G.I. Joe at Hasbro before transitioning to comic book inking in 1988. We dive into his extensive work across major publishers including Marvel, DC, Image, CrossGen, and others, inking legendary titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Eclipso, Violator and more, with particular focus on his acclaimed work on Shade, the Changing Man, which earned him an Eisner nomination for Best Inker in 1993. Mark discusses the often-underappreciated art of inking, his collaboration process with pencilers, working on high-profile titles like Hellblazer and JLA, and how the industry has evolved since he started. We also explore his move into self-publishing and his continued passion for both commercial comic work and fine art.You can follow Mark on Instagram @markpenningtonart.Support the show___________________Check out video versions of this and other episodes on YouTube: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits!If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts or wherever you found this episode. Fifteen years ago, John Constantine did the one thing that magic cannot do—raise the dead—and tried to forget what he'd let loose on the world. Today, John must face the consequences of that night as the London Underworld braces for an all-out mob war.
Imagine a time when the biggest action star in the world wasn't some musclebound dude with an oiled-up chest wearing a loincloth, but rather a tall, slim guy whose catch phrase was “whoa.” If you're imagining Keanu Reeves, good; if you're imagining him as John Wick, you gotta go back further, to the Matrix days of the early 00s. Now, imagine that he and a young Shia LaBeouf are kickass exorcists and the guy from Bush is a demon. Seriously! That might've been the elevator pitch for CONSTANTINE (2005). Based on the comic book Hellblazer in the most superficial ways, this one might be a contentious pick for those who don't consider it horror, but it's our show and we say angels, demons and sick forearm sigil tatz give it a pass. We live in the era of AI. The technologies many of us saw for the first time in sci-fi movies are now the technological experiments that will define humanity for generations to come. In some ways, that's an exciting concept. How does nature versus nurture apply to machine learning and what exactly are the boundaries we will set to protect us? Human beings are historically bad at implementing guard rails with our new toys. What happens when they are in the hands of a madman? It's something that has been preoccupying my brain recently and was my own filter reading the aptly named We're Taking Everyone Down With Us, a new six issue spy revenge thriller, sci-fi mystery mini-series from Image Comics and I've got just the person to help me digest its complexities first time show guest Matthew Rosenberg. I've been meaning to catch up with Matthew for some time now as someone who's spent as much time in the music business as I have. We get into how he got GG Allin on the loudspeakers at Comics Pro (truly an amazing accomplishment,) take a moment to express a shared love of the 90s comics classic SCUD The Disposable Assassin, break down the trauma of growing up latchkey kids and how that experience shaped the story, and what's exactly with using Starfish as a term of endearment, that's a mad scientist for you. It's a fun chat. Wu Tang is for the children! We're Taking Everyone Down With Us hits shelves on March 25th. From the publisher MINISERIES PREMIERE THE EXPLOSIVE DOUBLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE! After her mad-scientist father is killed by the world's greatest spy, 13-year-old Annalise is left all alone in the world. Sort of. Her dead dad's robot bodyguard is following her around for some reason. Now Annalise has a choice: try to lead a normal life for the first time ever…or seek revenge and maybe overthrow the world order in the process. Image Comics proudly presents a journey of regret and retribution, super spies and pseudoscience, growing up and global domination from brilliant artist STEFANO LANDINI (Prodigy, Hellblazer) and okay writer MATTHEW ROSENBERG (WHAT'S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE?, Uncanny X-Men). Ian and Mark look back on 20 years of Francis Lawrence's Constantine! At the pre-dawn of our modern comic-book movie era, Warner Bros commissioned a $100 million adaptation of the cult DC Vertigo series, John Constantine: Hellblazer, featuring a sarcastic, chain-smoking British antihero who stalks the rainy streets of London contending with the supernatural. The resulting film stars a fully Americanized Keanu Reeves fighting the forces of darkness in L.A., accompanied by his spunky chauffeur, Shia LaBeouf. In 2005, lifelong Hellblazer fan Ian was unimpressed and mildly offended. Two decades on, his opinion of the film is markedly different--as is Mark's!Join us for this wide-ranging, spoilerific review, which also looks at the comics, the short-lived NBC reboot starring Matt Ryan, and the recent news of a possible Constantine sequel--which may find Reeves once again lighting up in that dapper black trenchcoat!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Constantine trailer. You can pick up the all-new 4K Ultra HD edition of Constantine from Warner Bros.Check out Mark "The Movie Man" Krawczyk's The Spoiler Room Podcast.
