This episode originally aired in two parts on 3/24/16 and 3/25/16. It features Gavin Napier prosecuting Man of Steel and then Mark Radulich and Robert Winfree defending Man of Steel.Reaction to the film among comics creators was mixed. Those who enjoyed it include Jeff Parker, Heidi MacDonald, Ethan Van Sciver, Christos Gage and former Superman writer Dan Jurgens. Among its detractors were Joe Keatinge, Sean McKeever, Gabriel Hardman and Mark Waid. MacDonald praised the film's action, drama and leads Henry Cavill and Amy Adams. Van Sciver singled out Cavill in particular for praise. Gage called it the best Superman film since 1980's Superman II. Hardman said that he liked a lot of the mechanics but did not connect with the characters, which robbed the story of tension. Waid, who wrote the origin miniseries Superman: Birthright, criticized the film for its overall "joyless" tone, and for Superman's decision to kill Zod, a criticism echoed by other creators. Writer Grant Morrison, who wrote the critically acclaimed miniseries All-Star Superman, expressed mixed reaction to the film, saying that while they "kinda liked it and kinda didn't", it did not present anything new, as they would have preferred a "second act" type story with Lex Luthor instead of re-establishing the character by presenting information Morrison is already familiar with. Morrison also questioned the need for a superhero to kill, as did artist Neal Adams. Adams suggested that other alternatives were open to Superman when Zod threatened innocent people with his heat vision, such as covering his eyes. He also criticized Superman for not moving the battle away from Metropolis as the character did at the end of Superman II. Jim Lee had a positive opinion: "It's epic. It's got a lot of heart, but one of the things that was kind of missing from the last Superman movie I think was the action, and this movie has it in spades. I mean it is a visual thrill ride. It is amazing. You get to see all the powers of Superman, and in all its glory, and I think people are going to be blown away."Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsosnapchat: markkind76FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

In the decade before Stan and Jack blew the doors off of the comics world with Fantastic Four #1, the company then known as Atlas Comics tried to relaunch their three biggest superheroes of the 1940's: Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner! Our pal Joe Keatinge (Shutter, Ringside, Stellar, Marvel Knights: Hulk, Morbius: The Living Vampire) takes us on a tour of how these WWII heroes were retrofitted for the Red Scare in a pre-Comics Code world! Reading List: Captain America's Weird Tales #74, Young Men #24-28, Captain America Comics #76-78, Sub-Mariner Comics #33-42, Human Torch Comics #36-38, Men's Adventures #27-28. (Thanks to Tom Brevoort for his website articles and his chapters in Marvel Chronicle, which provided invaluable information.) "Marvel by the Month" theme by Robb Milne, sung by Barb Allen. Two different comics conversations on today's episode! First up, the creative team of the upcoming Image OGN "Afar": artist Kit Seaton and writer Leila del Duca. If one of those names sounds familiar, it's because del Duca is also the artist on "Shutter" with writer Joe Keatinge and is making her writing debut with this book. Seaton is the lower-profile of the two right now, but once fans get a look at "Afar", the SCAD professor will be a name one everyone's mind. Greg talked to the duo about their science-fiction story, the difficulties in maintaining the balance between strange and relate-able, influences, work processes, and just what to do when someone jimmies the lock on your bedroom door with a steak knife in the middle of the night. Following that is a chat with comics-multihyphenate Christina Blanch. Between her work as a retailer (Aw Yeah Muncie), writer ("The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood"), educator (Super MOOC), and panel moderator, Blanch has spent a life firmly and unapologetically rooted in pop culture. Like her interests, the conversation covers a lot of ground, including what it's like being a retailer in today's comics market, the differences between stocking an LCS and setting a syllabus, the connection between Dr. Indiana Jones and Dr. Christina Blanch, surviving 2016, and what we can already do to make 2017 better. On this interview episode, Andy and Derek talk with Joe Keatinge and Nick Barber, the creators behind the new Image series, Ringside. The first issue will be released this week, and so the guys wanted to get the lowdown on what promises to be a fascinating and different title. Joe gets things rolling by laying down the premise of the first narrative arc, introducing us to Danny Knossos, the once-famous wrestler called Minotaur. In classic noir fashion, the protagonist in this first issue returns to the old haunts from his past to help out a friend in trouble, and in doing so inadvertently becomes embroiled in a darker world that he had thought he had put behind him. This is more than a mere wrestling story, Nick and Joe explain. It's a brooding, crime-infused drama that bumps up against the world of professional wrestling. What's more, the series will have an ensemble cast, giving us shifting focal characters and rotating perspectives so as to flesh out a larger and more haunting landscape. The creators also describe how they met one another and how the idea for Ringside came about. They discuss their working relationship, the division of creative labor, and the history behind pitching the story to Image. In fact, Derek and Andy really don't have to do much during this interview. They ask a few questions to get things started, and then Joe and Nick take it from there with their own stories, turning parts of the interview into a personal back-and-forth of a couple of guys catching up. And that's part of The Comics Alternative is all about, isn't it: bringing people together through comics?

Today we have Greg's interviews from last week's New York Comic Con. Things kick off with writer/editor/Valkyrie Katy Rex. Katy is working on Strange Wit, a graphic novel about the life & works of writer Jane Bowles. They talk about that, her multitude of other works, and just what it means to be a Valkyrie in today's comics climate. Next comes artist Nilah Magruder. Winner of the inaugural Dwayne McDuffie Diversity Award earlier this year, Nilah is the cartoonist behind the webcomic M.F.K.. They chat a little bit about her approach to the comic as well as the new picture book she's working on for 2016. Keep checking back at Multiversity Comics for an more in-depth interview with Nilah in the coming days. Following that Greg checks in with Leila del Duca and Joe Keatinge of “Shutter”, delving into some process talk with Leila and getting some lowdown on Joe's upcoming Image book Ringside with Nick Barber. Plus, Greg takes the opportunity to pick his brain on the just-announced Moebius Library and what we might be seeing from that Dark Horse project. And finally, things wrap up with a talk with writer Alex Simmons and Joseph Illidge. Simmons' work on the comic “Blackjack” has been brought back into print by Dover Graphic Novels, and we get a chance to hear from the writer himself about why writing the adventures of a 1930's African-American soldier of fortune with a conscience is still relevant in 2015. You’ll have fun listening to a great discussion I enjoyed with comics pro Joe Keatinge, a creative force behind the excellent Shutter and also the scripter for Robert Kirkman’s Tech Jacket, both from Image Comics. As we were in the process of setting up this interview, Joe asked if I had read Shutter. I told him I had not, and that sent me after the series, all of which made me a big fan of this dynamic and intriguing comic. If you haven’t read the story of Kate Kristopher and her adventurous family, you can catch up quickly by picking up the first trade and the subsequent issues before the #10 arrives on Wednesday, March 11. We also discussed Tech Jacket and what it’s like to work with Mr. Kirkman, something Joe compares to working with Steve Ditko on Spider-Man. In this episode of The Comics Alternative, the third of what promises to be an unprecedented five consecutive shows for a single week, Derek and Andy W. discuss four new #1 and one-shot issues. First, they look at Christopher Sebela and Chris Visions's Dead Letters (BOOM! Studios), focusing on the story's clever use of narrative gaps and art-driven action. Then they turn to Shutter (Image Comics), a new series from Joe Keatinge teams up with debut artist Leila del Duca. The guys love the initial setup, but nonetheless wanted more story in this inaugural issue. From there they delve into JC De La Torre and Ray Dillon's Star Mage from IDW Publishing, and what promises to be an intriguing new sci-fi title. Finally, Derek and Andy wrap up with a long discussion of Richard Corben's latest adaptation, Edgar Allan Poe's The Premature Burial (Dark Horse Comics). They point out that the issue also includes an adaption of “The Cask of Amontillado” — in fact, “Cask” takes up more of the issue than does the titular feature — and that it works in similar ways to the other recent Corben adaptations of Poe for Dark Horse, leading up to the fall publication of the collection, Edgar Allan Poe's Spirit of the Dead (Dark Horse Books). The Two Guys had a great time discussing these new comics, and you can join in on the fun as well by lending your ear to this week's review show.

Books of the Week include: Lumberjanes #1 (by Noelle Stevenson, Brooke Allen and Grace Ellis), Nightcrawler #1 (by Chris Claremont and Todd Nauck), Shutter #1 (by Joe Keatinge and Leila Del Duca) and Iron Fist #1 (written and drawn by Kaare Andrews). Basically a lot of #1s, which are #1 in our hearts this week. D’awww… Our main topic though is YOU. And by that, I mean that we go through the listener questions on the forum and in our email and we answer as many as possible in our allotted amount of time (aka before Bobby’s bedtime). Which of our favourite characters would we kill off if we HAD to? WHO KNOWS?! But you’ll probably find out if you listen to the show. Annnnnnnnnnd… we say it on the show, but just in case you missed it, the Talking Comics crew on Twitter are: Bobby: @ bobbyshortle Steve: @ dead_anchoress Stephanie: @ hellocookie And Bob’s email is bobreyer@talkingcomicbooks.com FYI: the crew have gone all superhero on the world, thanks to the wonderful Hanie Mohd. Like them? Make sure to follow her and let us know what you think of our new superhero pictures. Enjoy! The Comic Book Podcast is brought to you by Talking Comics (www.talkingcomicbooks.com), a blog dedicated to covering the latest and greatest in comic book releases. The editorial staff is composed of Editor-in-Chief Bobby Shortle (Fanboy Remix, Doctor Whocast), Stephanie Cooke ( Misfortune Cookie) and Steve Seigh (JoBlo.com contributor) who weekly dissect the releases and give you, the consumer, a simple Roman yay or nay regarding them. Our Twitter handle is @ TalkingComics and you can email us at info@talkingcomicbooks.com.

This week, Greg gets a chance to talk with Image creator Leila del Duca, whose series Shutter (with writer Joe Keatinge) is not only her first book with that company, but also her first work published by one of the Big Three. Set in a modern world where mythology and all manner of fantastical elements are as common as subway trains and Starbucks, Shutter is about Kate Kristopher, a young woman who left a life of exploration and adventure behind only to find that world not so eager to let her walk away. Leila talks all about the book, how she got to this point, and such other topics as why burning bridges is never a good thing, circle Mignola versus straight-line Mignola, just what the hell “dry brush” is for those of us not artistically inclined, reverse-engineering comics, Goodwin & Williamson's Star Wars daily strip, and the bottle of wine at New York Comicon 2012 that changed her life forever. All that and a whole lot more is just a click away! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. Greg chats it up with Joe Keatinge, fresh off of this month's Image Expo, and you'd better have a comfy chair to listen to this one in, because it is a behemoth! Over two and a half hours of comics talk straight from the man who brought you Hell Yeah!, Glory, and your soon-to-be-favorite title Shutter (announced at the Expo with artist Leila Del Duca), Joe is candid as always, and speaks his mind about Image, Marvel, DC, and a whole bunch of comics on either side of the Atlantic. Find out at what age he read Maus (it's a single digit), what he thought the biggest news out of the Expo was, what his original plans for Morbius were, and what event nearly collapsed the entire comic book industry. All this, plus updates on as many of the 10 books he has coming out in April 2014 as legally allowed: Shutter, What If: Age of Ultron, Marvel Knights: Hulk, the Glory hardcover, and more. AND after that, there's a special segment after the outro with Joe just after he interviewed Jim Steranko at last year's Collector's Con! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com.
