[School of Movies 2026] Following on from the sunny and heartfelt success of James Gunn's 2025 Superman we have the scrappy follow-up by Craig Gillespie, detailing the lifestyle of Kal-El's cousin. Gillespie most likely got the job after two filmic accomplishments in spotlighting grubby, depressed punk girls who nobody likes except the audience; I, Tonya and Cruella. Sharon and I went all out on this, reading the source book, 'Woman of Tomorrow' by Tom King & Bilquis Evely, which itself draws structural and thematic inspiration from specifically the Coen Brothers adaptation of True Grit by Charles Portis. What we are able to do is outline clearly where the film differs from the book and where the book differs from both film and original book to create this turducken of revenge. This episode is totally worth listening to, even if you haven't seen this box office bomb that everyone we talk to seems to like and everyone we don't know personally seems to despise. Where our discussion gets more interesting is when we compare the movie to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the acclaimed comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely that we reviewed last week. While the film improves on a few aspects of the source material, including pacing, action, and a more restrained version of Ruthye, it also loses much of the emotional depth, nuance, and heart that made the graphic novel so memorable. Ultimately, we found Supergirl to be an entertaining but uneven superhero movie. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and a one-dimensional villain along with a familiar, trope-driven plot keep it from reaching its full potential. Still, if you can separate the movie from its comic book inspiration, there's plenty of fun to be had. We merely waited for it to conclude, reveal its full magnificence, and find a proper hardcover release worthy of its contents. We then needed to dissect everything with Tom, our friend and frequent guest. Dark Horse Comics has now collected Helen of Wyndhorn into a hefty hardback that will undoubtedly lure new readers to its sumptuous narrative, and we're ready to dive into its pages and go full-spoilers with its author. Before we even hit record, Tom King was happily pouring over this story with us, recalling his initial intentions for the tale and comparing them to his current perspective. Helen of Wyndhorn reteams King with his Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cohorts, but it's a saga that took almost three times as long to complete, and that effort proudly reveals itself in every line, word, and pixel. The book is often sold as "Conan the Barbarian meets The Wizard of Oz." Sure, those influences are preset, and we discuss them, but it's a book that thrives on gothic romance and real-life heartache, too. When we first meet the title character, she's more than adrift; she's devastated and on the verge of destruction. Her father, pulp author CK Cole, is dead and gone. Her grandfather hires a governess to drag her back to his estate. What she discovers there will change everything she knows about her father as well as reality itself. And her journey toward purpose awoke something in us. Something that's evolving even as we write these words. How big or significant must an action be for it to be heroic? It's DC December and Tom King returns to the Cryptid Creator Corner for the 3rd time. Tom has been writing The Penguin and Wonder Woman, but he comes on today to discuss the newest series he's writing: Black Canary: Best of the Best. Tom is working with artist Ryan Sook on this 6 issue series that sees Black Canary take on Lady Shiva. Each issue will showcase another round of the fight. Tom talks about the origins of this story from a Batman writer's retreat combined with his son's love of the WWE. Plus Tom gets to take a deep dive into the backstory and history of Dinah Lance.
