Tuesday, 19 May 2026 A summary of Matthew Chapter 19. Chapter 17 revealed that there is a future for Israel in God's redemptive plans. Chapter 18, above all, showed that childlike faith is required to enter into the kingdom. The final parable, that of the wicked servant, was a clear indicator that the law is set aside but that Israel rejected Christ's fulfillment of it and, instead, went to reimpose the law that Christ had fulfilled. The parable ended with the thought that Israel would be delivered to the torturers (symbolized by the wicked servant being delivered up) until he should pay all that was due. Until Israel enters the New Covenant, they fulfill the typology of that wicked servant. Chapter 19 takes the reader through various topics to reveal what God prioritizes. One can see the contrasts between law and faith as the verses progress. Verse 1, using the word after-lifted, indicated a transition in Jesus' ministry was taking place. The same is true with the narrative that is to be revealed. Jesus departed from the Galilee and “He came unto the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.” The east side of the Jordan typologically indicates a time prior to Israel's acceptance of Jesus, the Descender, symbolized by the Jordan. The Pharisees came to Him, asking about divorce. Could a man dismiss his wife for every cause? Jesus' answer took them back to the creation. At the creation, God made the two one. Therefore, man was not to separate what God had conjoined. As this was the only instruction on the matter until the time of Moses, it was the ideal from the dispensation of innocence, even until the time of the law. Being the ideal, however, does not mean this is what man practiced. As such, Jesus explained that the accommodation, which came during the dispensation of the law, was because of the hardness of their hearts. This is why Moses gave the allowance for divorce, but it was not that way from the beginning. The covenant of marriage was to be considered binding. So much was this the case that Jesus noted that divorcing and marrying another was to be considered an act of adultery. The intent of conveying this is to show that the law could not change the heart of man. Rather, it only highlights sin in man, something explained by Paul in Romans 7. Having heard Jesus' words, the disciples exclaimed that if this was the case of a man with a wife, it would be better not to marry. Jesus' response showed that, despite the baggage of marriage, it is God's intent. Only those who have been eunuchized in one of various ways were to be considered the exception to God's original mandate to be married and to remain faithfully married. God's original ideal, despite the law, was to be upheld. With that thought complete, it was noted that children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and to pray. The disciples admonished them concerning this, but Jesus told them not to do so, but rather to allow them to come in this manner because, as He said, “for such, it is, the kingdom of the heavens.” The intent of His words is that those of childlike faith, not those who are obedient to law, are granted entrance into the kingdom. Immediately after that, the thought of law observance was again brought to the forefront with the introduction of the young ruler, relying on an unstated precept of the law (Leviticus 18:5), to gain him perpetual life. He wanted to know what good he should do to obtain that state. Jesus cited commandments and precepts specifically relating to one's relationship with his neighbor, assuring him that if he did such things, he would enter “the life.” After claiming he had done those things, Jesus reset his thinking by telling him that one thing was lacking. He was to sell all he had, give it to the poor, and then he would have treasure in heaven. With that, he went away sorrowful. He had failed to see that he could not meet the law's standard, a law that pointed to Christ. Jesus was essentially telling him exactly that. “The law points to Me. If you want to be perfect under the law, sell what you have and come, follow Me.” That is how you will merit favor under the law. With his departure, Jesus told His disciples about how difficult it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of the heavens. With the disciples' incredulity at Jesus' words, He told them that with men, it is impossible, but with God, all things are possible. It again points to trust and salvation by grace. The wealthy ruler wanted to merit his eternal life. Jesus showed him it could not be done. Only God can provide it, and it must come through faith. Something revealed in the dispensation of grace. The final paragraph began with the thought introduced by Peter's question concerning what would be there for him and the other disciples. They had given up all to follow Jesus. Jesus assured them that they would sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. That will occur during the dispensation of the millennium. As such, the words of Chapter 19 span all the dispensations of time. With that having been assured to the disciples, Jesus then assured all who sacrifice of themselves for His name will receive their just reward. The chapter finished up with His words that the many who are first will be last and who are last will be first. That sets the tone for Chapter 20, where Jesus will give a parable and summarize it with that same thought. Life application: The flow of Chapter 19 is one that repeatedly returns to the thought of the insufficiency of the law to bring about a right state before God. Rather, the law highlights sin in man, but it can do nothing to correct man's fallen state. The supremacy of Jesus is thus on prominent display in this chapter. Coming on the heels of Chapter 18, it stands as an admonition for Israel to give up on trying to earn God's favor through personal merit and to come to Christ for renewal. In that, they will receive all of the promised blessings given to them throughout the prophets. As Jesus promised the disciples that they would sit and judge Israel, it is a clear indication that these millennial blessings can only come to the nation when they acknowledge Jesus, the recognized Messiah by these disciples and the One they will serve. They have entered the New Covenant. When Israel does, it is these men who will judge them under that New Covenant. Lord God, thank You that salvation comes through what Jesus has done. We don't need to fret over what we must do. He has done it all! Thank You for the hope of eternal life because of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Sunday, 19 April 2026 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. Matthew 19:1 “And it was, when Jesus completed these words, He after-lifted from the Galilee, and He came unto the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus ended Chapter 18 with a note about the forgiveness of a brother for his trespasses. Chapter 19 begins with the words, “And it was, when Jesus completed these words, He after-lifted from the Galilee.” Here is an exciting word that is seen for the second and last time, metairó, to after-lift. It is derived from meta, after or with, and airó, to lift. There is no exact English word, but the idea of a plane taking off is somewhat analogous. There is a purposeful intent of getting up and removing oneself from one place to another. The word was minutely explained at its introduction into Scripture in Matthew 13:53. It would be good to return there to reacquaint yourself with its intent. In both instances of its use, there is a transition in the narrative. In Chapter 13, the transition was from instruction in parables to Jesus' rejection in Nazareth. Now, there is a transition from parables concerning community ethics to a southward journey which will culminate in Jesus' passion. It is a rejection that goes beyond that of Nazareth. In this rejection, it will be by His nation. As has been seen, the Galilee is a circular area. The name comes from the Hebrew Galil. It is identical to galil, to pivot or turn. That, in turn, comes from galal, to roll away. Thus, the meaning is Liberty. In the Hebrew, the name is normally preceded by the definite article, ha'galil, the Galilee. Of Jesus' after-lifting from this area, it next says, “and He came unto the borders of Judea.” Ioudaia, Judea, is the feminine form of Ioudaios, Jews. As such, it is the land of the Jews. The word is derived from the fourth son of Israel, Judah. His name is derived from odeh, a verb signifying I will praise (or thank). Thus, the name means Praise. One can think of Judea as the land of praise. The narrative continues, saying, “beyond the Jordan.” The meaning here is not obvious without consideration. Judah does not lie beyond the Jordan. As such, the intent must be derived from what it says as Mark 10 begins – “Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan.” Mark 10:1 Therefore, Matthew's words are elliptical. The thought should be, “And it was, when Jesus completed these words, He after-lifted from the Galilee and He came unto the borders of Judea [having traveled that way] beyond the Jordan.” In Hebrew, the Jordan is ha'yarden, the Descender. The Jordan is a picture of Jesus in His incarnation, descending from heaven (symbolized by Mount Hermon where the Jordan's water comes from), traversing through Israel, and ending at the Dead (Salt) Sea. A picture of Christ's incorruptible death, symbolized by salt. No water flows out of the Dead Sea, instead it “after-lifts” through the process of evaporation an unseen process by which the water ascends. A wonderful picture of Christ's resurrection. What a wonderful picture. And just as evaporation is not directly seen while it happens, but must be understood and accepted by faith, so too the resurrection is something we receive by faith: unseen to the natural eye, yet real, powerful, and life-giving. As has been seen, to travel “beyond the Jordan” thus forms a picture of time before Jesus' incarnation. Life application: Based on Jesus' movement from Galilee to Judea through the region of Perea instead of Samaria, a picture is being developed. Paying heed to such movements by the Lord will help open the narrative to see what is on God's mind. Thus, Chapter 19 will require careful attention to hopefully understand what He is telling us. As we progress through the chapter, pay attention to the details. Jesus is heading to His passion. This culminates in His crucifixion and resurrection. However, as He goes, we will be given information about other things through His movements and interactions. God is using typology to convey spiritual truths as He has done throughout Scripture. Let us journey together through the chapter, attempting to discern what is being conveyed. Lord God, what a treasure Your word is. It directs us to new insights and understandings if we will just pay heed and follow the details carefully. Open our eyes, O God, to see wonderful things in Your word. Amen.

Sunday, 15 February 2026 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; Matthew 17:1 “And after six days, Jesus, He takes with – Peter, and James and John his brother, and them, He uphefts into a high mountain off alone” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus finished up Chapter 16, noting that there were some standing there with Him who would not taste death till they saw the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. Chapter 17 now begins, saying, “And after six days.” Mark says the same. Luke says, “about eight days.” Of this somewhat indeterminate time, “Jesus, He takes with – Peter, and James and John his brother.” These selected men are, at times, referred to as the inner circle. This is because this is not the only time they are selected to come separately with Jesus. Rather, there are several such instances in the gospels. Of this group accompanying Jesus, it next says, “and them, He uphefts into a high mountain off alone.” A new word is seen here, anapheró. It is derived from ana, up, and pheró, to bring, bear, or carry. The ten uses of the word combine to give a sense not found in any single English word. It refers to leading others up a mountain, being carried up into heaven, offering up sacrifices, carrying the sins of others, etc. In each case, there is upward motion and the sense of bearing or leading a mass that has weight. A single word, that now exists as of the typing of this commentary, and which can describe all of these various thoughts understandably, is “upheft.” With a right click of the mouse, the red line under the word has disappeared, and it is now entered into the computer's dictionary. As for the mountain Jesus uphefted the men to, there are various views. A later tradition identifies it as Mount Tabor. However, it is known that a fortress was on top of Tabor at the time. Further, its location is not conducive to the surrounding narrative as well. A good candidate is Mount Hermon. It is the snowcapped mountain bordering Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. In typology, it is used in the Old Testament to symbolize heaven from which the Jordan (the Descender) then flows, picturing Jesus descending from heaven. This seems like the likely mountain to accommodate what will next take place, but because it is not named, this remains speculation. This account, however, is a good contrast to what was said in Matthew 4 – “Again, the traducer, he takes Him to a mountain – exceedingly high – and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them.” Matthew 4:8 “And after six days, Jesus, He takes with – Peter, and James and John his brother, and them – He takes up into a high mountain off alone.” Matthew 17:1 Life application: It was noted above that Matthew and Mark say, “after six days,” while Luke says, “about eight days.” There is no contradiction in that. The word after means “after.” The word about means “about.” Seven is after six, and a general ending of seven is about eight. The indeterminate wording allows people to speak and write in their natural way without there being a contradiction. Depending on the time reference of a person's statement, such things happen all the time. If one reckons the time after the day of an event, the timing would be – Monday – Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday. If one reckons from the day of an event, it would be – Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday – Monday. Thus, the first is six days after the first day, while the second is about eight days. We do the same type of reckoning all the time. If you arrive in Florida on a plane at 11:30 pm on 11 April, during a later conversation, you might still say you were in Florida on that day. If you left Wednesday morning at 5 am, you might say you were there that day also. Thus, you have been at the location three days, despite your total time there being about thirty-six hours. When you are reading the Bible, be sure to consider such things. Luke uses a different perspective to say exactly the same thing as Matthew and Mark did. This is to be expected from a chronicler who is from outside of Israel as he sits and counts days. The timing provided by those inside Israel would be from their personal experience and how that aligns with culturally accepted norms. When considering these things in their proper light, it is evident that no contradiction exists. Instead, the accounts are reliable and actually support the veracity of what is stated. Lord God Almighty, You have given us a word which is challenging to our minds, and yet understandable when it is properly and carefully evaluated. Thank You that we will get out of Your word just what effort we put into it. Thank You for such a wonderful gift to guide and instruct us. Amen.
Sunday, 7 September 2025 On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. Matthew 13:1 “And in that day, Jesus, having departed from the house, He sat by the sea” (CG). In the previous verse, Chapter 12 finished with Jesus saying that whoever does the will of His Father in heaven is His brother and sister and mother. Chapter 13 now begins with, “And in that day.” Such words as this will have various meanings based on the context. For example, the Lord may say, “In that day, I will rescue Israel.” Or we may read of the “Day of the Lord.” Such days actually reflect past or future events or extended periods of time. The same terminology is used in English as well. However, there is no need to assume anything other than a literal rendering of the word here. Therefore, it is either referring to the previous verses or to something coming in the verses ahead. The most obvious and likely meaning is the day on which He had already been speaking. That this is likely is seen in the next words, where it says, “Jesus, having departed from the house.” Jesus was specifically noted as being inside based on the words of Matthew 12:46 – “While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.” Noting His mother and brothers were outside means that He was inside. Now, having departed from that house, it next says, “He sat by the sea.” This is the Sea of Galilee. The narrative is preparing to enter into more words from Jesus by introducing the location and circumstances. Life application: Because Jesus was in a house, only a certain number of people could hear His words. That is clearly evidenced by the fact that His mother and brothers wanted to speak with Him. He was engaging the scribes and Pharisees in one setting. Even though His words are recorded now for all to know what went on in the house, at the time, what He said was not heard by the people. However, Jesus' heading out and sitting by the sea is a purposeful decision to allow His coming words to be heard and considered by many more people. As you read the gospels, think about what is going on in the surrounding context. Jesus walks in various locations at various times. If the name of the location is given, it is certain that particular information is being provided to understand a greater picture. It is as if His very movements are forming a picture for us to consider. Likewise, when He says something, it is quite possible that His words are fulfilling other pictures from the Old Testament Scriptures. For example, Jesus said, “For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). In that sentence, Jesus equates Himself to the manna given to Israel in the wilderness. That is explained more fully in the surrounding words. But Jesus also noted that He comes down from heaven. In Hebrew, the word yarad, to descend, is used. It is where the name Jordan, or in Hebrew yarden, is derived. In studying the uses of yarden in the Old Testament, amazing pictures of Christ, the Descender, will be seen. The very topography of the land of Israel is noted in Scripture to tell us greater stories of Jesus, His work, and how it applies to His people. But typology can be manipulated. It is easy to “make anything say anything” and claim that is what the Bible is saying. So be careful as you read the word and make conclusions about things you read. Also, be careful about how people present typology. Something may sound right, but be completely wrong. There must be a reasonable connection to what is being said, and the typological representations must be consistently used. If they are properly searched out and presented, truly amazing stories of God's redemptive plans will shine through. Consider what God is telling you, both on the surface and how it points to Jesus. This is what Jesus told us would be the case as we read this precious word – “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39 Lord God, what an intricate and amazing word You have given us. There are many levels of information being conveyed to us all at the same time. Your word is a marvel and a delight for our minds to consider, wonder at, and rejoice in. Thank You for this precious word. Amen.

Friday, 6 September 2024 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. Matthew 3:13 “Then Jesus, He comes from Galilee upon the Jordan unto John to be immersed by him.” (CG). The previous verse completed John's words of warning and impending doom spoken to the Pharisees and Sadducees. However, during his speech to them, he had said, “Indeed, I, I immerse you in water to reconsideration, but He coming after me is mightier than I. He is whom I am not adequate to lift His sandals. He, he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11). Having said that, the next words become a point of confusion to him. They begin with, “Then Jesus, He comes from Galilee.” Luke 3:23 says at this same time, “Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age.” This was at the time that many people were coming to John to be baptized. Thus, what occurs would have been a public event for anyone there to see. This is hinted at in the word translated as “comes,” paraginomai. It signifies to become near. Strong's adds in the thought “to appear publicly.” Jesus voluntarily departed from the area He had been raised in and went with purposeful intent to begin His ministry, which was “upon the Jordan.” Rather than “to” as most translations say, the word is epi, upon. The word gives the idea of the superimposition of time, place, order, etc. One can think of the epidermis, which fits over a person. Jesus has purposefully left the Galilee and has gone to the Jordan. Galilee comes from the Hebrew Galil. It signifies a circular district, it is identical to galil, to pivot or turn. That, in turn, comes from galal, to roll away. The meaning is thus Liberty. As seen in a previous commentary, the Descender pictures Christ in His incarnation, coming from heaven to earth. The time for this to be made manifest to the world has arrived. Everything about the narrative is purposeful. One can get a hint of what is being presented. The people need liberty from the bondage of the law. Jesus' ministry is now about to commence, and so He symbolically leaves Liberty to place Himself under the law in His descending from heaven. As a Jew, He was born under the law, but the pictures here are being symbolically used at the initiation of His ministry. Thus, He has gone upon the Jordan, the Descender, “unto John,” or Yah is Gracious. John is being used as the introduction of the ministry of Christ to Israel. The graciousness of the Lord is what is intended to be seen. All of this is reflected in the words of John 1 – “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” John 1:16-18 Jesus came to John “to be immersed by him.” In other words, the event is purposeful. John, and John alone, was to be the immerser of Jesus. It was he who was selected before birth to be the herald of the coming Messiah. It is he who came as the prophesied Elijah recorded in Malachi 4:5. He is he who was to be the final prophet of the Law of Moses, and thus the one whose work would close it out in the sense of messianic anticipation. From this point on, the Messiah would become the central point of focus for all of Israel's religious life. The law was to end, and a new economy was at hand. John is the one to initiate this transfer, immersing Jesus in preparation for His glorious ministry. Life application: The words of the New Testament are understandable, and the ministry of Jesus is readily discerned from them. In reality, however, there is so much in the New Testament that is derived from the Old Testament that an entirely different level of understanding can only be derived from what is presented in the Old. The two merge together harmoniously because they are both given to explain the intents, purposes, and actions of God as He works through His plan of redemption for humanity. Don't be afraid to read and carefully consider the Old Testament as well as the New. The more you read the word, the more it will settle in your mind. Eventually, connections will be made that you had not previously considered. From there, it is then good to study and see if your connections are valid. We can, at times, make faulty connections that need to be corrected. But this is a lifelong process. Be sure to just keep reading the word and contemplating what God is telling us in this most wonderful treasure. Information about the King of the Universe is being conveyed. Bask in its riches all the days of your life. Lord God, in Christ Jesus, there is liberty from the penalty of the law. Instead of condemnation, in Him, there is grace, mercy, and eternal salvation. The story of Scripture is Your story as You work out the redemption of humanity through the Person of Jesus Christ. Thank You, O God, for Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Monday, 2 September 2024 and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Matthew 3:9 “and think not to say in yourselves, ‘A father, we have – Abraham.' For I say to you that God can from these stones rouse children to Abraham” (CG). In the previous verse, John warned the Pharisees and Sadducees to produce fruits worthy of reconsideration. Now, he continues his thought, saying, “and think not to say in yourselves.” By saying this, he knows this is exactly what they say to themselves. What they were thinking was probably one of the most common thoughts in Israel at the time, which is “A father, we have – Abraham.” This is just what the Pharisees later said to Jesus in John 8 – “I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.” 39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” John 8: 37-39 In John 7:36, the Pharisees were told by Jesus that “if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” He was making a point about their state before God because of sin. Despite being Abraham's descendants, he was not really their father. But they didn't understand His logic. Their default setting was, “If we descended from Abraham, then Abraham is our father.” It is exactly what John is warning against now. Jesus, however, next directly tells them their state – “Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.' Then they said to Him, ‘We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.'” John 8:39-41 These people claimed to be children of Abraham, but they did not do what Abraham did. Rather, they were children of Satan, doing what their father, the devil, did (John 8:44). When confronted with the fact that they did not act as Abraham, they then defaulted to being sons of God. That is when Jesus corrected them about their true father. In this case, the argument of sonship is one based not on natural genealogies, but characteristic. To be a “son” of something in the Bible often signifies a descriptor, meaning a trait or characteristic. For example, to be a “son of death” means to be someone worthy of being put to death. John knew the thinking of these people because it permeated their culture and society. However, he attempted to correct their thoughts even before the revealing of the Messiah by saying, “For I say to you that God can from these stones rouse children to Abraham.” Here, he uses the word egeiró. It has already been seen five times in relation to Joseph arising and doing as he was instructed. Strong's defines it as “to waken (transitively or intransitively), i.e. Rouse (literally, from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively, from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence).” The idea of John's words here is one of making a complete change in someone as if he were a stone that could be raised to life, arousing him to life. What seems impossible is something that God can, in fact, do. But what is John referring to? The symbolism goes back to Joshua 4 where stones are set up in memorial to the cutting off of the Jordan for the sons of Israel to pass through on dry ground. Not one (as some translations imply) but two sets of stones were set up. And those events occurred at the same location that John the Baptist is now immersing people. The significance of the stone memorials is exactly what John is now speaking of in the coming of the Messiah. Jesus, the Descender, like the Jordan, would be cut off. In His being cut off, life would be given to any who passed through His death. To fully understand the symbolism (and it would be a sad loss for you if you don't), going to the Superior Word sermons on Joshua 3 and 4 is a must. Everything is pointing to the coming of Christ and what He was to do for His people. Note: As Joshua 3 and 4 are right at the beginning of the book of Joshua, wouldn't it be better to start with the first sermons of the book and go through them? That way, when you come to Joshua 3 and 4, you will have the appropriate background information to more fully understand what is being seen. The Bible is revealing an amazing journey through redemptive history in types and pictures. You may be amazed. Life application: As previously noted, to be a son of someone or something means to bear the characteristics or traits of that person or thing. The main theme of the book of Galatians is that of law versus grace. The Galatians had started well. They had believed the gospel of Jesus and they had been saved and given God's Spirit. But then, along came Judaizers who attempted to put these believers back under the law of Moses, a time before the coming of Christ and His fulfillment of the law. If they did this, they would be sons of Moses, not Jesus. And because by the law is the knowledge of sin, they would not be free from sin. Rather, they would be bound by it. In being bound to sin, they would be sons of the devil. But in coming to Christ, one is freed from sin. He is not under law but under grace. In this state, sin is no longer imputed (2 Corinthians 5:19). Law, by its very nature, causes the imputation of sin. It is a trap that too many have fallen into in the church today. Modern Judaizers are everywhere, reinserting precepts of the law into their theology and bringing people back into bondage. Where they stood free in Christ, they now stand at enmity to Him. There will be no salvation for those who never came to Christ and who believe this nonsense, and there will be no rewards for those who were once saved but have placed themselves back under the law. Be free in Christ by living in faith that He has accomplished all things necessary for salvation. This is what grace means. It tells us that what we have gotten is what we do not deserve. We must simply accept it and forever rejoice in it. “Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ‘In you all the nations shall be blessed.' 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.” Galatians 3:5-9 O God, thank You for the freedom from sin and bondage that we have received through the coming of Jesus Christ. Yes, thank You for the grace You have lavished upon us! Hallelujah and Amen.
Friday, 30 August 2024 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. Matthew 3:6 “and they were immersed in the Jordan by him, acknowledging their sins” (CG). The previous verse noted that Jerusalem, all Judea, and the region around the Jordan went out to John the Baptist. With that remembered, the thought now continues with “and they were immersed.” The word baptizó, to baptize, is now used for the first time in the New Testament. It is a transliteration of the Greek word. Its English meaning is “to submerge.” It is unfortunate that the word was transliterated and not translated because a lot of very poor theology could have been avoided. However, that is the reason the word was not translated. Nobody at the time wanted to get stuck in a theological argument about sprinkling vs. immersion or whether child baptism is acceptable. Wars could have started over such a thing. As for the meaning, a few commentaries will be given – HELPS Word Studies says, “properly, ‘submerge' (Souter); hence, baptize, to immerse (literally, ‘dip under'). 907 (baptízō) implies submersion (‘immersion'), in contrast to 472 /antéxomai (‘sprinkle').” So, no sprinkling. Got it. Thayer's Greek Lexicon says, “properly, to dip repeatedly, to immerge, submerge (of vessels sunk, Polybius 1, 51, 6; 8, 8, 4; of animals, Diodorus 1, 36).” So, when a ship sinks, it gets baptizo'd. Got it. Strong's says, “From a derivative of bapto; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. Fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism -- Baptist, baptize, wash.” Whelmed... I see. Fully wet. Got it. This issue of John's immersion was that of completely submerging those who came to him. A sign was thus being made that the people were wholly devoting themselves to return to the Lord, reconsidering their ways. If they came out and John sprinkled a little water on them, it would have signified something entirely different. Further, John's baptism, being a baptism of reconsideration of one's ways, would not apply to little children because they had nothing to reconsider. Until they were old enough to know what was right and reject what was wrong, they were under the care and direction of their parents. When Jesus initiated the New Covenant, the same truths would exist, but the immersion He directed now has a different purpose – “And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' So they said to him, ‘We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.' 3 And he said to them, ‘Into what then were you baptized?' So they said, ‘Into John's baptism.' 4 Then Paul said, ‘John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.' 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.” Acts 19:1-6 In Acts 2, like John's immersion, the immersion directed by Peter was one of reconsideration (Acts 2:38), but it was for a different reason. They had just rejected Jesus and crucified Him. They had to reconsider their actions first, believing on the name of Jesus. So, each account in Acts needs to be considered carefully to understand what is happening. The main point for now is that baptism signifies full immersion. Got it? Got it! John was immersing them “in the Jordan by him.” The Jordan was first mentioned in the previous verse. It means The Descender. Everything about the Jordan forms a picture of Jesus. John was symbolically preparing them for the coming of their Messiah by submerging them in the waters of the Descender. This was because they were “acknowledging their sins.” Sin comes about through law. Where there is no law, sin is not imputed (Romans 5:13). The law is not something that is given for righteous people. Rather, Paul explains the purpose of the law in 1 Timothy – “But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.” 1 Timothy 1:8-11 These are the type of people that were coming forward, acknowledging their state and reconsidering it before the Lord. It is hard to figure out why people would want to return to the law that Jesus fulfilled. By doing so, they are admitting that they are not righteous. Instead, they are reflected in the words of Paul above. Those who have come to Christ are now deemed as righteous before God, not because of what they have done, but because of what He has done. Life application: It was noted above that the Jordan, the Descender, pictures Christ. A portion of that will be explained so that you can understand how God has taken even the natural layout of the land of Israel to tell us about the coming of Christ Jesus. The Descender starts at Mount Hermon, which means “Sacred.” It is a three-peak mountain, each peak of which is essentially the same size and height. That is a reference to the Trinity. Hermon is capped in snow all year, signifying purity. It is emblematic of heaven, the Sacred place. The water descends from Mount Hermon springing up in the very northern areas of Israel just as Jesus sprang up from the land in His incarnation. The waters first pass to and through the area of Dan, or Judge. Christ descended from heaven to the world to be the Judge of sin and to have sin judged in Him. The waters flow south into the Galilee, where they linger before passing south, again into the Jordan. Christ's life and ministry were centered on this area where He lingered, spending most of His recorded time there. The Jordan then travels in a very long zigzagging path along the border of Canaan. Christ, the Descender, went through all Israel, traveling and preaching. The Jordan terminates in the Salt Sea, the Sea of the Arabah (Sea of the Pledge). It is the Dead Sea. Christ, the Descender, went to His death. But there was no corruption found in Him, typified by the salt of the Salt Sea – a picture of incorruption. In His death, the pledge, typified by the “Sea of the Pledge,” is given. It refers to the Spirit, the pledge (arrabon – from the Hebrew eravon) of Ephesians 1:13, 14 – “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee [arrabon] of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13, 14 From this sea, the waters do not continue on. Rather, they evaporate – a picture of the resurrection and ascension. As for the fulfillment of the typology, Jesus Himself expressly tells us that He is the fulfillment of what the Jordan pictures – “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” John 6:38 Though modern New Testament Hebrew is different from biblical Hebrew, there are overlapping words. In the Sar Shalom Hebrew translation of Jesus' words, v'yaradti, “and I have come down,” is used. The name Jordan is from the same word, yarad. Jesus is the Descender. These are but a few of the many pictures that can be drawn from a study on the Jordan. For example, Joshua 3 and 4 tell of the time when Israel passed through the Jordan on dry ground. Both passages give amazing insights into the future redemption of Israel when they come to God through acknowledgment of Jesus Christ. To understand these pictures, the sermons from the Superior Word are available in a variety of different formats for you to read, watch, or listen to. Each time the Jordan is mentioned in Scripture, information about the Person of Jesus is seen. Be sure to consider what you are reading as you go through the Bible. It is all telling us of Jesus. How precious is Your word, O God! It is telling us wonderful stories about what has been, what is currently going on, and what is coming in the history of the redemption of man, and it is all centered on the giving of Your Son for us. Thank You, O God, for Jesus Christ our Lord. Hallelujah and Amen.

On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics creator Jeff Lemire. Originally from Woodslee, Ontario, Jeff wrote and drew comics for years while working day jobs, until he eventually self-published his book Lost Dogs in 2005. This led to making Essex County for Top Shelf, and since then he's written and drawn a veritable slew of fantastic comics, both creator-owned works for publishers like Image and Dark Horse and for-hire books for companies like Marvel, DC and Vertigo. This includes comics like The Underwater Welder, Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Extraordinary X-Men, Descender and Ascender, Black Hammer, and Royal City. It should be noted that this is just a small sampling of his work, and currently, he is writing Little Monsters and Phantom Road for Image.
