In this episode of The Professor Liberty Podcast, Mr. Palumbo takes listeners on a journey through the early life of Abraham Lincoln, tracing his transformation from a poor frontier boy in Kentucky to a rising political force. Born into hardship, Lincoln's character was shaped by loss, manual labor, and a relentless hunger for knowledge, which he fed through books like the Bible and Aesop's Fables. The episode highlights key formative experiences—his exposure to slavery as a child, a life-changing visit to a slave market in New Orleans, and his early political stances opposing slavery's expansion. Through humor, storytelling, and historical insight, Mr. Palumbo explores how Lincoln's evolving moral convictions and legal intellect laid the groundwork for his future role as a leader dedicated to justice and unity.

By 1985, REM had carved out a following both in their home base of Athens, GA and at colleges and indie radio stations around the US. Their first two albums Murmur and Reckoning gave them a foothold as they learned how to craft songs and play live. But they were ready to take the next step so instead of retreating to North Carolina where they'd recorded their first two albums, they went to London to broaden their horizons and up their songwriting and recording game. Because REM had grown into a solid live band, some songs were worked out on the road like their classic travel song Driver 8. But they also sought inspiration from some of the odd characters they encountered in Athens and around the South with songs like Wendell Gee, Life And How To Live It and Old Man Kensey. They also drew from their travels to create some great road songs like Can't Get There From Here, Maps & Legends and Feeling Gravity's Pull. Guitarist Peter Buck does his jangly best here while breaking out a little banjo in spots. Mike Mills not only locks down the bass but provides harmonies and counterpoints to Michael Stipes desperate and personal lyrics. This album would portend the next two REM records - Life's Rick Pageant and Document - both favorites of The Wolf. While the band would go onto become multi-platinum international pop superstars in the 90s, this album saw the band not ready to become that big but ready to take the next step in their journey. In this powerful episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas return to break down the first three episodes of Andor Season 2. With its return, Andor brings layered storytelling, political tension, and the gritty realism that has set it apart from other Star Wars shows. The hosts discuss Cassian's full transformation into a rebel leader, Mon Mothma's personal sacrifices, and the Empire's terrifying strategies of control. From unexpected romances to moral dilemmas and dark parallels with real-world issues, this is a deep dive into one of the most human stories in the galaxy far, far away. Cassian fully embraces his role as a leader, bringing compassion to rebellion. Mon Mothma's storyline explores generational expectations and political sacrifice. Empire propaganda is shown through chillingly realistic parallels to history. The show doesn't shy away from mature, dark themes rarely seen in Star Wars. Visual direction and character writing are among the strongest in the franchise. Quotes: “This isn't just Star Wars. This is storytelling that trusts the audience.” “The rebellion is messy. The empire is clean. That's what makes it terrifying.” “I wish you were drunk... That line hit harder than any explosion.” “Cassian's not just fighting the Empire. He's fighting for people.” Call to Action: Enjoying the deep dives? Support us by leaving a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 96 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the first film in their Peter Jackson series, Braindead (1992). The journey for the boys to talk about Peter Jackson has taken a long road, winding road to get here, much like the director's acclaimed trilogy. But in one of the more fascinating careers of the last thirty years, Peter Jackson saw a rise to fame after years of making scrappy, independent horror-leaning films that landed him a couple of big checks that became some of the most known films of the 21st century. By 1992, Jackson had already made two films; lesser known titles Bad Taste and Meet the Fables (which the guys give their brief thoughts on at the beginning of the episode). But it was his third film, Braindead, that was his breakout; a zombie comedy splatter film about a son's relationship with his needy mother that turns gory when she is bitten by a hybrid rat-monkey creature and begins to transform into a zombie. In the vein of the Evil Dead franchise, Jackson goes all out with the gore and mayhem to allow for a unique, memorable horror experience like no other. Ryan and Jay breakdown their thoughts on the film, the level of gore and blood in Braindead, ponder how this guy went on to make the films that he did, discuss their favorite kills in the film, preview the rest of the Jackson series and explain why this was the right time to finally do this series. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h48m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his next film, Heavenly Creatures. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

This episode explores one of the cleverest monsters on our list: the Nine-Tailed Fox of East Asian mythology! But how do you tell a kitsune from a huli jing from a gumiho? We'll try to sort it all out! The fox's reputation as a trickster is world-wide, though, so we'll also look at foxes in Aesop's Fables, medieval stories from France, and the folklore of Eastern Europe. Visit the World of Mythik website to learn more and to contribute your theories to our board! All stories told on Myths & Muses are original family-friendly adaptations of ancient myths and legends. Stories from ancient mythology can also sometimes deal with complicated topics for young listeners — to the mortal parents and caretakers reading this, we encourage listening along with your young demigods to help them navigate those topics as they explore these epic tales. We often do not realize that deep down economics is a battleground of competing anthropologies: implicit or explicit theories of human nature, selfhood and subjectivity, quiet beliefs about how we understand ourselves and our place in the world. In this podcast we bring together researchers from different disciplines that study economic phenomena, systems, agency and behavior, ranging from historians and political philosophers to economic anthropologists and development economists, to scrutinize the protagonist of their discipline: who is the Real Homo Economicus? What kinds of creature are they? What drives their choices and behavior? Are we still talking about the same creature? To get the conversation started we use an experimental method: the Mythlab method. We use stories as a probe into economic thinking and quiet beliefs about the underlying anthropologies. In each episode we give our guest a story and see how they respond to it, and explore assumptions and associations in a playful way. In this fourth and final episode we play with fables, short moralistic tales, often featuring animals, but always addressing a deeper human truth. We talk about The Dog and the Piece of Meat, The Wolf and the Crane, The Hawk and the Nightingale, The Hen with the Golden Eggs, The Cricket and the Ant. What is the moral of these stories? What can animal stories tell us about human nature? And what kind of world is the world of the fable? I try to make sense of these fables with Huub Brouwer. Dr. Huub Brouwer is assistant professor of ethics and political philosophy at Tilburg University. His research is on theories of distributive justice, particularly on desert, responsibility-sensitive egalitarianism, and taxation. Huub is currently carrying out a 4-year research project on philosophy of taxation, funded by the Netherlands Research Council. Edited and mixed by Connor McMullen. Mythlab team: Dr. Erik Bähre, Dr. Aiste Celkyte, Prof. dr. When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber. An unexpected music miracle unfolded in Athens, Georgia when all four original members of REM reunited on stage during a Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy tribute performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of "Fables of the Reconstruction." This rare convergence became the highlight of a music-packed fortnight in Athens, GA that I'm thrilled to share with you in vivid detail. The magic moment happened at the legendary 40 Watt Club when Michael Stipe took the microphone, joining Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry for a performance of "Pretty Persuasion." As someone witnessing this unicorn of rock reunions, I found myself torn between capturing the moment on my phone and simply absorbing the once-in-a-lifetime experience with my own eyes.My Athens immersion continued with visits to iconic landmarks like the Murmur Trestle and Weaver D's (of "Automatic for the People" fame), followed by four days at Cracker's annual "Camp in" event. This gathering of devoted fans—affectionately called "Crumbs"—featured intimate performances ranging from David Lowery and Johnny Hickman's acoustic sets to full-band experiences. A particularly moving moment was Ike Reilly's performances featuring his adult children, weaving themes of redemption and musical legacy. We dive into musical history with explorations of Depeche Mode's "Violator" album and its transformative impact on their fanbase in 1990, plus Mike Watt's collaborative 1995 album featuring members of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters. "Minute with Jimmy" spotlights The Vapors' surprising return with a new album 45 years after their hit "Turning Japanese," proving great music transcends time.Whether you're a devoted fan of Athens' storied music scene or simply love discovering musical connections across generations, this episode captures those special moments when music history unfolds before your eyes—and why sharing these experiences matters now more than ever.Send us a one-way message. We can't answer you back directly, but it could be part of a future Music In My Shoes Mailbag!!!

Natasha Neary, Luke Resop, Steve Demarais, and Bronson Strickland delve into the relationships between moon phases, positions, and their potential effects on buck movement and bedding behavior. They review their research findings from a complex and exhaustive analysis of GPS-collared bucks to determine if moon phase and/or position has any relationship with buck movement behaviors. They emphasize the importance of accounting for individual buck personalities and behaviors during the rut and highlight the challenges in drawing definitive conclusions. The discussion also includes insights from a survey of hunters to gauge beliefs and expectations of the moon's role in stimulating buck movement, and the implications of various lunar theories.  The conversation highlights the complexity of deer behavior and the importance of data-driven insights to understand these patterns.
