Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 18, 2026 is: Goldilocks • GOHL-dee-lahks • adjective Goldilocks describes something that has or produces an optimal balance usually between two extremes. In astronomy, it specifically designates an area of planetary orbit neither too hot nor too cold to support life. // The couple, undecided between country and city living, took the Goldilocks option and moved to a bustling college town surrounded by nature. See the entry > Examples: "It's a well-known fact that the time between 3 and 5 o'clock in the afternoon is a liminal space. ... It's too late for lunch, too early for dinner. But it's the Goldilocks hour for a little treat." — Nikita Richardson, The New York Times, 8 May 2025 Did you know? English has always drawn inspiration from fables and fairy tales, stories bursting with metaphors that help users get their verbiage just right: one may fall down a rabbit hole (thank you, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), cry wolf (we see you, Aesop's Fables), or hope one day to meet one's Prince Charming (brava, Cinderella). The adjective Goldilocks is borrowed, of course, from Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a perennial favorite in which a little girl so-named for her golden hair finds the perfect balance between hot and cold, soft and hard, small and large—all in the home of unknowing strangers. Since the mid-1960s, English speakers have applied Goldilocks to all things regarded as perfectly balanced or happily medium. The word has specific applications in astronomy, with the phrase "Goldilocks zone" designating an area of planetary orbit in which temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold to support life.

Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy (and their musical friends) have definitely tapped into something with this "play R.E.M." thing. Mike & Jason originally started this exercise by playing album sets of some of their favorite artists like Neil Young, The Modern Lovers, The Smiths and more. But when they picked out Murmur by R.E.M. in 2023, the whole concept took off in a big way. After playing Fables of the Reconstruction last year, they are heading out on a big tour playing Lifes Rich Pageant. Both shows at the Metro in Chicago are sold out, but there are plenty of other dates available, including a September show at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago. Definitely worth checking them out!Time stamps3: How did the musical project come together?5:21: Are you a big R.E.M. fan?10: You got R.E.M. together!11:30: What part did Chicago play in getting this project going?15:30: What was the reception like as your project started taking off more and more?19: How did you enjoy Sky Blue Sky?21:08: There are parallels between acting and singing in a band, but in most cases, you aren't getting an immediate audience response, how do you feel about that difference?25: Have you had any insights into the difference between the four R.E.M. albums you've covered?30: Any stories from having spent time with the band?38: What else do you have going on aside from the upcoming show?

The Paradox Of Prophetic Rejection © 2026 ISBN 978-976-97826-5-5ABSTRACTOver the years I have discovered that my cognitive Influences on Writing and Communication as a writer, cultural theorist, podcaster, media arts specialist, and doctor of divinity was shaped by several key factors. These include Cognitive Process Theory, which highlights the mental processes behind writing, such as stylistic imitation and curiosity about text structure (Smith, 2003). Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the role of social contexts in writing development, suggesting that cultural norms and values influence how individuals interpret and create written works (Bandura, 1986). Additionally, Cultural Contexts play a significant role in shaping social cognition, affecting how individuals approach social interactions and relationships based on the values of their respective cultures (Gergen, 2009). Lastly, Analytic vs. Holistic Thinking suggests that cognitive styles vary across cultures, with analytic thinking often associated with Western cultures and holistic thinking more common in collectivist societies (Nisbett, 2003). Together, these factors form the cognitive frameworks that influence writing, theorizing, and communication in these professional fields.Dr.William Anderson Gittens, D.D.ReferencesAesop. (n.d.). Jazz, in particular, has played a central role in this lineage. From John Coltrane's “Alabama,” to Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln's We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, from Nina Simone's “Mississippi Goddamn” to Charles Mingus' “Fables of Faubus,” jazz has always spoken truth to power. That tradition continues today, ascontemporary jazz musicians compose artistic eulogies for Oscar Grant III, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and George Floyd; celebrate the nation's first Black president; and reaffirm that “Black Is Beautiful,” more than 60 years after the phrase became a unifying call within the Black PowerMovement. Jazz also chronicled the life and journey of Dr. King in real time, beginning with his emergence as a young preacher and activist in the early 1950s, and has continued to honor his legacy in the decades since his life was cut short. On thisspecial episode of Milestones, we explore the role jazz played inadvancing King's philosophy and celebrating his extraordinary impact as one of the most consequential leaders in American history with NEA Jazz Master and four-time GRAMMY-winning artist and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, GRAMMY-winning bassist and vocalist Ben Williams, and GRAMMY-nominated pianist and curator Orrin Evans. Together, with host Angélika Beener, they reflect on pieces like Herbie Hancock's 1969 “I Have a Dream,” and more, examining their cultural impact and role in the musical evolution of jazz. Hip-hop historians T.L. Cross and WBGO's own Stevan Smith also join the conversation, shedding new light on “King Holiday,” the 1986 hip-hop and R&B anthem that united an ensemble of rising stars—from New Edition and Run-DMC to Whitney Houston and Stephanie Mills. With the late Dexter Scott King at the helm, Kurtis Blow was tasked with assembling a collective to create an anthem for thenext generation – one that would honor Dr. King's legacy and serve as the soundtrack for the inaugural MLK holiday celebration, 40 years ago. The iconic scholar, author, global thought leader and visionary Dr. Angela Davis joins as a very special guest, offering remarkable insights on this milestone anniversary.

In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Paul Vermeersch about his new collection of poetry, NMLCT (ECW Press, 2025). Fables and fairy tales collide with virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and monstrous myths in a world where no one knows what to believe. In his eighth book of poems, Paul Vermeersch responds to the increasing difficulty of knowing what is real and what isn't, what is our genuine experience and what is constructed for us by The Algorithm. In a “post-truth” society rife with simulations, misinformation, and computer-generated hallucinations, these poems explore the relationship between the synthetic and the authentic as they raise hope for the possibility of escape from MCHNCT (Machine City) to NMLCT (Animal City), where the promise of “real life” still exists. Paul Vermeersch is a poet, multimedia artist, and literary editor. His last book of poetry was Shared Universe: New and Selected Poems 1995–2020. A professor of creative writing and publishing at Sheridan College, he also edits his own imprint, Buckrider Books, for Wolsak & Wynn Publishers. He lives in Toronto, ON. In this episode, host Jed Doherty welcomes acclaimed author Jon Erik Lappano to discuss his latest picture book, "The Language of Birds." Lappano shares the inspiration behind the story, which centers on Mira, a solitary child who forms a deep connection with birds while struggling to communicate with people. Through their conversation, Lappano reflects on the importance of honoring quieter, introverted children in literature, drawing from his experiences as a parent and observer of childhood dynamics. He emphasizes the value of imagination, unstructured time, and engagement with the natural world, expressing concern over the effects of screens and the need for children to find belonging in multiple ways. Lappano also shares insights into his creative process, describing how ideas often take shape over time and how feedback from his own children helps refine his work. The discussion explores themes of unconventional friendships, nonverbal communication, and the powerful magic found in simple connections to art and nature. Later in the episode, Dr. Uzma Farooq joins to introduce her book, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Other Great Stories with Lessons." Dr. Farooq describes how she and her sons collaboratively retold Aesop's Fables, modernizing language and illustrations while preserving the lessons and emotional depth of the originals. Her passion for storytelling and dedication to sharing classic tales with a new generation make for a thoughtful and enlightening conversation. We also welcome Heather Fountaine Youngs back to the show to celebrate her new children's book "Mine!"

Green & Red has been at the forefront of refuting the various romantic versions, lies, and conspiracy theories about JFK and we once again discuss the reality of Kennedy. For decades now, especially after Oliver Stone's JFK created the idea that Kennedy had changed course and was going to withdraw from Vietnam, develop a relationship with Cuba, and end the Cold War, various pundits and commentators, including many on the Left, have accepted Stone's revisionist ideas and now present them as fact. But the reality, rooted in documents and archives, is very different. Kennedy was a consummate Cold Warrior who came to office dedicated to flex American muscle and extend American empire. We began by discussing his approach to Latin America, where he made the overthrow of Castro in Cuba one of his first priorities at the Bay of Pigs and then, despite Stone's insistence he'd had a change of heart and mind after the Missile Crisis continued to subvert Cuba in the hopes of ousting the government there. Meanwhile, he developed an internal security model for all of Latin America in order to prevent Left movements from gaining momentum. In this context he also subverted governments in places like Brazil and Guyana.Of course, the main point of Stone's argument related to Vietnam, where he and his followers claim that JFK had decided to wind down and withdraw from Vietnam in 1963. The reality was very different. Kennedy actually ignored the advice of U.S. military officials, who consistently warned that Vietnam was not an American security priority, that American troops weren't well-trained and prepared to fight a jungle guerrilla war, and he authorized a coup against Ngo Dinh Diem, surely a sign that he was not preparing a withdrawal.Conspiracies are anti-political . . . the seek good individuals and heroes and posit that nefarious characters in the "deep state" are upending the better angels in government. These theories distract us, especially on the Left, from analyzing systems and structures, like the ruling class. The continued obsession with Stone's conspiracies may be lucrative for some, but they're a dead end for people trying to make sense of American power and resist it.For more on this, see "JFK: 60 Years of Myths and Disinformation" with links to relevant articles and podcasts, at https://afflictthecomfortable.org/2023/11/22/jfk-60-years-of-myths-and-disinformation/——————-
