On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Kenny Porter and artist Tyrell Cannon to talk all things Operation: Iron Coffin, the wild new IDW Dark series that drops Dracula onto a Nazi war train in one of the year's coolest high-concept comics. During the interview, the duo digs into balancing horror and action, Dracula's internal struggle, the grindhouse inspirations behind the violence, and how the book evolved into a monster-filled gauntlet packed with occult science, anime influences, and brutal fight choreography. Visit our Patreon page to see the various tiers you can sign up for today to get in on the ground floor of AIPT Patreon. We hope to see you chatting with us on our Discord soon! Dave: Absolute Martian Manhunter #12 (Werther Dell'Edera Card Stock Cover) Alex: Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1 Interview - Kenny Porter, Tyrell Cannon - Operation: Iron Coffin - July 8th - FOC June 1 Asking for an elevator pitch usually feels a bit cliche as an interviewer, but then Operation: Iron Coffin feels like it deserves it since it kind of has the perfect tight setup, care to share one? Earlier this year you mentioned to Chris Coplan Dracula isn't really a hero here, even if he's the protagonist. How important was it to frame this as a redemption story without ever sanding off the uglier truths about who Dracula is and what he's done? Tyrell, you talked before about Dracula wrestling with the cost of his immortality and violence. Visually, how do you show that internal conflict in a character who often presents himself as cold, confident, and almost unstoppable? The first issue moves at a breakneck pace, but there are key flashbacks and supernatural moments that hint at something deeper under the grindhouse chaos. Kenny, how did you approach layering emotional depth into something that's also designed to feel like an adrenaline-fueled action movie? The Nazi train setup creates this perfect “one nightmare after another” structure where every car can introduce a new horror. Was the book always designed like a deadly gauntlet, or did the train concept evolve as you built the story? There's a fascinating tension between nature and science in the issue, especially with Dracula as this ancient evil crashing into engineered horrors and wartime experimentation. Was that thematic contrast something you wanted front and center from the beginning? Tyrell, one thing I loved was how physically dominant Dracula feels. He's ripping people apart, shrugging off attacks, and moving through scenes like a slasher villain unleashed. What were the biggest influences behind the choreography and sheer brutality of the action sequences? Hazel and Ivy immediately make a strong impression, especially because they seem to understand Dracula in ways others don't. What can you tease about their dynamic with him and why they're such dangerous opponents specifically for this version of Dracula? Kenny, the issue somehow makes Dracula sympathetic without asking readers to forget he's a monster. Were there any versions of Dracula in film, literature, or comics that influenced your take, or did you intentionally try to move away from previous interpretations? Fun/silly question: if your Dracula had a playlist blasting while he fought his way through the Nazi train, what songs or bands would absolutely be on it? Fun/silly question to cap things off: Dracula has now fought through a Nazi train like the star of the wildest action movie never made. If you could drop your version of Dracula into any other movie genre or setting next, where would you send him?

Today on the GateCrashers podcast we have the pleasure of being joined by writer Tate Brombal, known for his extensive collaborations with James Tynion IV on his Slaughterverse books, including the just launched Fall of the House of Slaughter and Image Comics' Everything Dead & Dying. Over the last couple years, he has made a name for himself as a rising star at DC Comics, first with Elseworlds's title Green Lantern Dark and an ongoing run on Batgirl starring Cassandra Cain, #19 having just been released this week. Along with this, Brombal has recently taken over New Titans, delivering a much-needed fresh take on the beloved DC team. We chat about all this and more in our interview that you can listen to right now! For more info on all of Tate Brombal's books, check out our reviews and solicit texts for all his first issues mentioned above here: Fall of the House of Slaughter by Tate Brombal, James Tynion IV, Werther Dell'Edera, Adriano Turtulici, and Tom Napolitano. As the House of Slaughter's ailing Old Dragon enters his final days, Cecilia Slaughter and the other Heads gather to determine his successor. Deadly ambitions begin to take shape as the House and the Order prepare for a new legacy to begin — and the conflict will no doubt be lethal in this all-new miniseries set in the world of Something is Killing the Children! Can the House of Slaughter survive a new Dragon coming into power? New Titans by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano. WHO ARE THE NEW TITANS? After helping save the world from yet another world-ending event, the Titans have earned some much-deserved rest. Back in Titans Tower, they're glad to be reunited again... But it almost feels too good to be true. Are these Titans who they claim to be? And if they can't trust each other... can they even trust themselves? Tate Brombal and Sami Basri kick off a brand-new era for the next generation of superheroes! Everything Dead & Dying by Tate Brombal, Jacob Phillips, Pip Martin, and Aditya Bidikar. Everything Dead & Dying follows Jack Chandler, the sole survivor of the zombie apocalypse hunkered down in his rural farming community. But rather than eliminate them, Jack has chosen to continue living alongside the undead — including the husband and adopted daughter he fought so hard to have. But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of those who hope to kill his family for good. Batgirl by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades! When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra, Lady Shiva comes to the rescue, and they must put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Cass must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice... and revenge?! It's a Batgirl book like never before, so join us as we dive into the psyche of one of Gotham's deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother. Green Lantern Dark by Tate Brombal, Werther Dell'Edera, Giovanna Niro, and Tom Napolitano. On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago — and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe!

We have two episodes coming to you in audio form from our April livestream and here is the first!! Billy Z, Steve and Caleb got together in the middle of the month to discuss new books and it was an even split: half DC and half Indie! First from the house of Superman and Batman, we have the Mad About DC one shot, where some of the biggest names in comics take on DC characters and concepts a la Mad Magazine! We also talk about Batwoman #1, the new series feauring Kate Kane written by her co-creator Greg Rucka with art by DaNi! Rounding out the trio of DC books, we have a book about a trio: Detective Comics #1107 by Tom Taylor and Pete Woods which is the start of an arc teaming up Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary! Then we switch over to the independent side - first with Red Book #1 from Dark Horse, a companion series to Blue Book by James Tynion IV and Michael Avon Oeming crafted by the same creative team examining UFO sightings throughout history in Russia and China! We then shift our sights onto Defenders of the Earth, a reboot of the 80s cartoon and toy line which brings together the most famous King Features heroes - Flash Gordon, Mandrake, Lothar and The Phantom courtesy of Dan DiDio and James Calafiore. And lastly from new publisher Ignition Comics we chat about the first issue of Dennis Hopeless and Brahm Revel's Just Brutal, a kinetic yet chaotic blend of sorcery and family dynamics!! This is a loaded two-hour melting pot of a funny book fondue so hit play and enjoy!

This week on the AIPT Comics Podcast, we interview cartoonist Stephanie Stalvey, diving deep into her graphic memoir Everything in Color. In the conversation, Stalvey opens up about growing up in an evangelical household, unpacking purity culture, and how motherhood reshaped her understanding of faith and identity. It's an honest, vulnerable discussion about turning lived experience into art, and why telling these stories can resonate far beyond one person's life. Darboe variant) Interview: Stephanie Stalvey, EVERYTHING IN COLOR out 04/28/2026 Your book explores growing up in an evangelical community where love and obedience were deeply intertwined. When you look back now, how do you understand that relationship differently? One of the most striking ideas in the book is the notion that “our bodies belong to the authority figure.” How did unpacking that belief shape the emotional core of this memoir? Everything in Color is deeply personal, especially in how it portrays your relationship with your husband and your child. What was it like sharing drafts with your husband as you were creating the book? Your journey raises big questions about faith, doubt, and identity. Did you find yourself arriving at answers while making the book, or is it more about learning to live with the questions? The book touches on major shared moments like 9/11 and the COVID lockdown. How did anchoring your personal story to these larger events help shape the narrative? There's a powerful shift in the book where love, especially through motherhood, reframes everything as sacred. When did that realization first begin to take hold for you? This is a massive and ambitious work. Was it always envisioned at this scale, and how long did it take you to bring it to life? The title Everything in Color feels like a mission statement for the book. At what point did you know that was the right way to describe this journey? The artwork blends intimacy with emotional weight throughout. How did you approach pairing your visual storytelling with such vulnerable subject matter?

This week's spotlight interview is with Timmy Heague, co-writer of Lost Fantasy #9, and is especially revealing, not just because of the wild hooks (Nazi dinosaurs, bazooka swords, monster hunting), but because of the unique vantage point he brings as both a writer and a longtime comic shop owner. That dual perspective shapes everything, from how he thinks about audience expectations to how stories are built to connect on the shelf. This interview goes far beyond Lost Fantasy #9. Timmy Heague digs into his unlikely path from comic shop owner to working writer, how collaborations with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas actually function behind the scenes, and why being on the retail front lines gives him a sharper read on what fans want than most creators. You'll also hear about the realities of breaking in, the push and pull of co-writing, and the mentors who helped shape his voice. It's part origin story, part industry insight, and a candid look at how comics really come together. What interested you most about picking up his story at this breaking point? You're working with Eamon Winkle on the Bombshell story. What makes Bombshell a compelling lens into this world, and how does her story complement or contrast Henry's? You're co-writing this issue with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, while also contributing to a backup that ties into Fireborn. How did you all divide the storytelling responsibilities, and what did that collaboration look like on the page? You've recently come off co-writing Archie vs. Minor Threats with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, which thrives on tonal contrast. Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? Fun one: if you had to drop Bombshell into another comic universe for a one-shot, where would you send them and why?

When you first realized the scope of that responsibility, what felt most important to get right from the very beginning? You've spent years helping elevate underrepresented voices through Marvel's Voices—both the podcast and the comics—creating space for creators to tell stories that might otherwise be sidelined. How did that experience inform the way you approached First Freedom, especially when it came to deciding whose voices and perspectives needed to be centered? The book spans nearly 160 years of history, yet remains deeply personal. How did you decide when to zoom out to the larger historical context and when to stay tightly focused on Dr. Opal Lee's lived experience? There are moments in First Freedom where the art (Alvin Epps, Bex Glendining, and Millicent Monroe) carries the emotional weight as much as the words. Was there a scene where seeing the visuals for the first time changed or deepened how you felt about the story? P.S. I loved how your team used the mirror in the opening scene. You worked directly with Dr. Opal Lee and her granddaughter, Dione Sims, including extensive in-person interviews. What surprised you most about Dr. Lee once you spent real time with her beyond the public image? This book arrives during Black History Month and as part of a yearlong celebration of Dr. Lee's 100th year—but it also makes clear that the fight for freedom and recognition is ongoing. What do you hope readers, especially younger readers, take away from that tension? You've said this book is about much more than Juneteenth as a holiday—it's about everyday acts of activism and becoming, as you put it, a “committee of one.” How do you hope this story reframes what activism can look like?As a journalist, producer, and author, you've told many real-world stories across different media. What did the graphic novel format allow you to do emotionally or narratively that other formats wouldn't?

The latest DC Spotlight episode for the week of February 4, 2026 features Jace and Rocky breaking down a strong slate of eleven new DC releases while reflecting on a rare week free of industry-wide bad news. The discussion is led by the return of The Nice House by the Sea #7, with James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno resuming the series after a long hiatus and using character guides and carefully integrated recap to maintain narrative momentum, followed by Batman: Static Beyond #3, which gains traction as Miguel Mendonça's art and a more action-driven focus push the Elseworlds concept forward. Batgirl #16 marks a turning point in Cassandra Cain's arc, delivering resolution to the Unburied storyline, expanding the Lazarus mythology, and setting up a return to Gotham, while DC KO: Night Fight #4 closes its mini-series by exploring Batman's exile from the tournament, alternate futures, and the consequences of loss before re-inserting him into the larger DC KO event. The episode also covers Batman #6, emphasizing character fallout and the status shift for Tim Drake, Poison Ivy #41, which advances Pamela Isley's path toward running for mayor through a jail-cell-centered narrative that keeps her agency intact, and DC KO: Boss Battle #1, a crossover-heavy one-shot pairing DC characters with external properties in a high-concept escalation of the tournament. Additional discussion includes JSA #16 continuing its Year One focus on early team dynamics, Absolute Green Lantern #11 deepening Al Ewing's dense mythology with escalating threats and spectrum lore, Absolute Superman #16 introducing an Absolute Hawkman origin while advancing Lex Luthor and Brainiac plot threads, and Superman: Chains of Love Special #1, a Creeper- and Livewire-focused story that rounds out the week, before the hosts rank their favorites and preview the looming impact of DC KO #4.

If you've already read our in-depth feature on Joshua Williamson's Iron Man, the conversation doesn't stop there. On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're running the full, uncut version of our interview with Williamson, pulled straight from the complete transcript behind the piece. It's a deeper, looser, and more candid discussion that digs into his rare position straddling both Marvel and DC, why Iron Man was the one Marvel character he couldn't pass up, and how revisiting Tony Stark's origin reframed the entire run for him. The written feature is live now—but this is the long-form version for listeners who want every insight, tangent, and behind-the-scenes detail.NEWSSal Buscema's superpower was clarityMarvel teases the end of the Ultimate Universe, and how it may be "Reborn"Full announcementSupergirl goes global: DC unites 15 countries for a new anthologyInvincible takes over Image Comics: Season 4 sparks a multiverse-wide celebration'Head Lopper' returns: Andrew MacLean gears cult-favorite for a 10-year anniversary relaunch'Lost Fantasy' ignites a new era as 'Fireborn' launches April 2026entImage Comics unveils a twisted new obsession as 'In Your Skin' blends Bollywood, body horror, and fame'Sex Criminals' is coming to Prime Video and it's about to break time (and TV)SCOOP: Oni Press goes all-in at ComicsPRO with Archie, Matt Kindt, and a wave of 2026 exclusivesOur Top Books of the Week:Dave:Absolute Batman #16 (Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta)Spirit of the Shadows #1 (Nick Cagnetti)Alex:Absolute Flash #11 (Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles)Malevolent #1 (Justin Jordan, John Bivens)Standout KAPOW moment of the week:Alex: Infernal Hulk #3 (Phillip K Johnson, Kev Walker)Dave: Iron Man #1 (Josh Williamson, Carmen Carnero)TOP BOOKS FOR NEXT WEEKAlex: Magik and Colossus #1 (Ashley Allen, German Peralta), The Nice House by the Sea #7 (James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno)Dave: DC K.O.: Boss Battle #1 (Various)JUDGING BY THE COVER JR.Dave: Batman #6 (Julian Totino Tedesco Card Stock Cover)Alex: Storm: Earths Mightiest Mutant #1 (Dike Ruan variant)Interview: Joshua Williamson - Iron Man #1 out January 28thYou've spent years shaping the DC Universe—long runs, big swings, major characters. What did it feel like emotionally and creatively to finally step into a mainline Marvel ongoing like Iron Man, and did that change how you approached the book?Carmen Carnero is bringing this story to life, and her work has such a strong sense of motion, emotion, and intensity. What did you see in her art that made her the right partner for this specific take on Iron Man?Your tagline, “Tony Stark is the most dangerous weapon in the Marvel Universe,” is a loaded one. In your mind, what makes Tony more dangerous than gods, monsters, or cosmic tyrants? The premise echoes Iron Man's origin in a powerful way—“Tony built Tony in that cave. What if he had to go in again?” How did you think about revisiting that crucible without just retelling the origin story?Madame Masque is positioned as a central force here, orchestrating the kidnapping of geniuses worldwide. She's also currently making waves elsewhere in Marvel—especially in Venom. What drew you to her for this story, and how do you view her role in the larger Marvel landscape right now?

Toward the end of our last conversation with Grant Morrison, they mentioned how they would soon be returning to comics, writing a new Batman story. We were ecstatic to hear, but we could not have possibly imagined that the new Batman story would actually be a DC/Marvel Comics crossover featuring the Hollywood darling Deadpool. Even better, it's a reunion between Morrison and his Klaus collaborator, Dan Mora, which also features numerous backup stories by other rad creators, including Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Hayden Sherman, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Amanda Conner, G. Willow Wilson, and Denys Cowan. The comic is possibly the most surprising book of the year, but not as surprising as Morrison's willingness to return to the show for an in-depth discussion all about it. You're in for another treat, friends. Our Grant Morrison Batman/Deadpool conversation is full-spoilers. You must read the comic before pressing play. If you read the book quickly, as our Brad did the first time, you'll probably miss a great deal. The comic is crammed with Easter eggs and winks, many of which we eventually caught, and a few others we did not until Grant Morrison pointed them out to us. Dan Mora and Grant Morrison's Batman/Deadpool is very different from Greg Capullo and Zeb Wells' Deadpool/Batman, which Marvel ran point on a few weeks ago. It's a fun adventure, but it's also a story commenting on comics, crossovers, and the writer/reader's relationship with the fourth wall. Initially, the team-up between Batman and Deadpool felt a little cynical, and/or capitalistic - and it's still that! However, given Grant Morrison's relationship with Animal Man and smashing the fourth wall, Deadpool is kind of the perfect character for them. Batman/Deadpool also allows Grant Morrison to right a wrong that occurred in the pages of...well, read the comic first, will ya? Dear listeners, welcome to Grant Morrisoin's Revenge! We get into it with The Writer, discussing their initial idea for the crossover, their evolving relationship with the fourth wall, and what they hope for future DC and Marvel crossovers. Batman/Deadpool #1 is out now from DC Comics. “The Cosmic Kiss Caper” is written by Grant Morrison, illustrated by Dan Mora, colored by Alejandro Sánchez, and lettered by Todd Klein. If you wish to continue this conversation with Morrison, follow them on their Website, Substack, Instagram, and Bluesky.
