Some writers just get a lot of work. Joshua Williamson is one of those guys who has written in a lot of corners of the DC Universe. He had a long run on Flash, wrote the Dark Crisis event, is the current writer on Superman, and is soon taking over Legion of Super-Heroes. He also has spent quite a bit of time in the Batman corner of the DC Universe, with a caretaker run on the main book in between James Tynion IV and Chip Zdarsky, and run on the most recent volume of Batman/Superman, and (salient for this episode) a long run furthering Damian Wayne's arc in the Robin ongoing and Batman & Robin. Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? Earlier this year you mentioned to Chris Coplan Dracula isn't really a hero here, even if he's the protagonist. How important was it to frame this as a redemption story without ever sanding off the uglier truths about who Dracula is and what he's done?  Tyrell, you talked before about Dracula wrestling with the cost of his immortality and violence. Visually, how do you show that internal conflict in a character who often presents himself as cold, confident, and almost unstoppable? The first issue moves at a breakneck pace, but there are key flashbacks and supernatural moments that hint at something deeper under the grindhouse chaos. Kenny, how did you approach layering emotional depth into something that's also designed to feel like an adrenaline-fueled action movie? The Nazi train setup creates this perfect “one nightmare after another” structure where every car can introduce a new horror. Was the book always designed like a deadly gauntlet, or did the train concept evolve as you built the story? There's a fascinating tension between nature and science in the issue, especially with Dracula as this ancient evil crashing into engineered horrors and wartime experimentation. Was that thematic contrast something you wanted front and center from the beginning? Tyrell, one thing I loved was how physically dominant Dracula feels. He's ripping people apart, shrugging off attacks, and moving through scenes like a slasher villain unleashed. What were the biggest influences behind the choreography and sheer brutality of the action sequences? Hazel and Ivy immediately make a strong impression, especially because they seem to understand Dracula in ways others don't. What can you tease about their dynamic with him and why they're such dangerous opponents specifically for this version of Dracula? Kenny, the issue somehow makes Dracula sympathetic without asking readers to forget he's a monster. Were there any versions of Dracula in film, literature, or comics that influenced your take, or did you intentionally try to move away from previous interpretations? Fun/silly question: if your Dracula had a playlist blasting while he fought his way through the Nazi train, what songs or bands would absolutely be on it? Fun/silly question to cap things off: Dracula has now fought through a Nazi train like the star of the wildest action movie never made. If you could drop your version of Dracula into any other movie genre or setting next, where would you send him?

We have two episodes coming to you in audio form from our April livestream and here is the first!! Billy Z, Steve and Caleb got together in the middle of the month to discuss new books and it was an even split: half DC and half Indie! First from the house of Superman and Batman, we have the Mad About DC one shot, where some of the biggest names in comics take on DC characters and concepts a la Mad Magazine! Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? How did that experience inform the way you approached First Freedom, especially when it came to deciding whose voices and perspectives needed to be centered?The book spans nearly 160 years of history, yet remains deeply personal. How did you decide when to zoom out to the larger historical context and when to stay tightly focused on Dr. Opal Lee's lived experience?There are moments in First Freedom where the art (Alvin Epps, Bex Glendining, and Millicent Monroe) carries the emotional weight as much as the words. Was there a scene where seeing the visuals for the first time changed or deepened how you felt about the story? P.S. I loved how your team used the mirror in the opening scene.You worked directly with Dr. Opal Lee and her granddaughter, Dione Sims, including extensive in-person interviews. What surprised you most about Dr. Lee once you spent real time with her beyond the public image?This book arrives during Black History Month and as part of a yearlong celebration of Dr. Lee's 100th year—but it also makes clear that the fight for freedom and recognition is ongoing. What if he had to go in again?” How did you think about revisiting that crucible without just retelling the origin story?Madame Masque is positioned as a central force here, orchestrating the kidnapping of geniuses worldwide. She's also currently making waves elsewhere in Marvel—especially in Venom. What drew you to her for this story, and how do you view her role in the larger Marvel landscape right now?

Toward the end of our last conversation with Grant Morrison, they mentioned how they would soon be returning to comics, writing a new Batman story. We were ecstatic to hear, but we could not have possibly imagined that the new Batman story would actually be a DC/Marvel Comics crossover featuring the Hollywood darling Deadpool. Even better, it's a reunion between Morrison and his Klaus collaborator, Dan Mora, which also features numerous backup stories by other rad creators, including Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Hayden Sherman, Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Amanda Conner, G. Willow Wilson, and Denys Cowan. The comic is possibly the most surprising book of the year, but not as surprising as Morrison's willingness to return to the show for an in-depth discussion all about it. You're in for another treat, friends. Our Grant Morrison Batman/Deadpool conversation is full-spoilers. You must read the comic before pressing play. If you read the book quickly, as our Brad did the first time, you'll probably miss a great deal. The comic is crammed with Easter eggs and winks, many of which we eventually caught, and a few others we did not until Grant Morrison pointed them out to us. Dan Mora and Grant Morrison's Batman/Deadpool is very different from Greg Capullo and Zeb Wells' Deadpool/Batman, which Marvel ran point on a few weeks ago. It's a fun adventure, but it's also a story commenting on comics, crossovers, and the writer/reader's relationship with the fourth wall. Initially, the team-up between Batman and Deadpool felt a little cynical, and/or capitalistic - and it's still that! However, given Grant Morrison's relationship with Animal Man and smashing the fourth wall, Deadpool is kind of the perfect character for them.
