What was the original spark that made you all say, “Actually…this could work”?Colliding Tones: Hopeful vs. DirtyHow did you navigate blending the wholesomeness of Riverdale with the gritty world of Twilight City without undercutting either tone—or letting one overpower the other? The Role of SabrinaSabrina is the hinge point between both universes. How did you land on her as the “bridge,” and what made her magic the right kind of chaos to kick off the crossover?Playtime (Frankie Follis) vs. ArchiePlaytime and Archie are about as different as two protagonists can be. What were the most surprising character parallels—or contrasts—that emerged as you wrote their interactions?Deep Cuts and Fan FavoritesThis series packs in everything from Salem the Cat to the annoying Reggie. How did you decide which characters to include—and how deep into both universes' lore did you dig?Implications for the Minor Threats UniverseJordan and Patton, you've said this story has long-term consequences for Playtime. Without spoiling anything, can you tease what ripple effects this Archie encounter sets in motion?Archie Breaks BadThe idea of Archie "breaking bad" is hilarious and a little terrifying. What was it like writing Archie with a criminal edge—and how far did you all consider pushing it?Why Comics?Jordan mentioned this is a story that only works in comics. What elements of this crossover could only have been done in this medium—not TV, not film, not prose?I'd be remiss not to ask, is there any romance in the series?Milkshakes & Mayhem (Fun Question)Let's say the Riverdale crew and the Minor Threats gang go out for milkshakes together after all this chaos—who's the last one standing in the milkshake chugging contest? And finally, Archie is also crossing over with Jay and Silent Bob, could you guys see a similar crossover with Kevin Smith's characters?

To give further background to why Arlong was in the East Blue as well as on the rising tension at fishman island, Jinbe tells the group about 2 huge role models for Fishman Island. Fisher Tiger and Queen Otohime both fought to end the prejudice between fishmen and humans, but they did so in their own separate ways.Next Week: Episodes 543-547Episode 542 is fillerhttps://linktr.ee/goingmerrypodPlease support Brandon and his family as they go through such a rough time in their lives! Is there a hidden continuity of self that ties those works together? You've mentioned that Absolute Batman aims to confront contemporary fears. How do you balance integrating real-world issues like mass violence into a superhero narrative without it becoming overwhelming for readers? This version of Bane is described as having a “true form” that's finally revealed. Was there a moment early on in this series—or in your own Batman run—where you first imagined this version of Bane, or did he evolve uniquely within the Absolute Batman frameworkArk m in Absolute Batman seems less like a building and more like a state of consciousness. How did you want to reinvent the idea of 'asylum' in this story? This series has played with identity, memory, and repressed trauma—common Snyder themes—but how has fatherhood and your recent creator-owned work influenced how you're writing Batman now, years after your first run? You've said in past interviews that Batman is a character who builds. Does this arc tear him down in a way that still honors that core idea—or are you challenging that philosophy head-on?With the Absolute line reimagining iconic characters, what can readers anticipate in future installments, and how do you envision the evolution of this universe?

I've been meaning to catch up with Eisner Winning comics writer and artist Michael Walsh (Universal Monsters:Frankenstein, Nullhunters) for some time on the show. As a big fan of his work on The Silver Coin, I was particularly excited about the news that he was working on a new project with James Tynion, and what a project this is. Exquisite Corpses is unlike anything else I've ever seen. It's an indy book with a production and marketing engine rivaling the big two and backed by the full force that is Tiny Onion and its plethora of talented worker bees. I'm not typically a single issue person, usually waiting for trades but after getting an advance sneak peek at this, I'm all in every month as it will be that read in the car book many people will anxiously await each month. They've assembled an all star team of rotating talent to work on different issues but retained the same letter and colorist to maintain some visual continuity throughout. As the architect of much of the visual language of the book and its various villains, it was a joy to hear all about Michael's character design process and the unique nature of collaborating that helped create the blueprint for what will be one of the most exciting series of 2025. Michael's website Michael's shout outs Becca Carey - project letterer Courtney Maynard Exquisite Corpses From the publisher Every five years on Halloween, the wealthiest families in America play a game. Twelve of the deadliest people in the world are dropped into a small town with just one goal: last killer standing wins. For the citizens of Oak Valley, Maine—this year's unlucky arena—the goal is much simpler. They must survive the night. Experience a comics event like no other, from the minds of JAMES TYNION IV & MICHAEL WALSH, as they lead a group of the most exciting voices in the industry. Over thirteen blood-soaked chapters, these creators will collaborate and compete to determine who wins and who dies—and the games begin in this triple-sized debut! Exquisite Corpses is an extended collaboration between Tynion and Walsh, who wrote the creative bible for the series, and some of the most acclaimed and popular creators in comics, including Adam Gorham (Hellhunters), Becca Carey (Absolute Wonder Woman), Che Grayson (Dark Spaces: Good Deeds), Claire Roe (Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special), Gavin Fullerton (The Closet), Jordie Bellaire (Redlands), Marianna Ignazzi (Catwoman), Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian), Tyler Boss (You'll Do Bad Things), and Valentine De Landro (Bitch Planet). We're back with two of our favorite ladies this week: Patreon backer (and Will's wife) Abigale Heartbalm and Stephanie Brown. Abigale wanted to read three stories featuring Stephanie, and we wanted to go with something similar as the first time we did a Stephanie episode where we touch on different eras of the character, but we kinda wanted to avoid all those depressing stories where she's Robin. So this time, for her second appearance, it's all second stories: her second appearance, her second arc as Batgirl and the second arc of James Tynion IV's run on Detective Comics. Clueless (Robin V.2 # 3-5) Batgirl Rising: Core Requirements (Batgirl V.3 # 4-7) The Victim Syndicate (Detective Comics V.3 # 943-947) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

You stepped in for Tom Taylor on this annual—can you walk us through how that came about? Was this a story you had to write quickly, or did you have some room to breathe and make it your own? 2. The story kicks off with a classic locked-room mystery—an impossible murder in a high-tech safe room. What drew you to that kind of puzzle, and how did you approach building a detective narrative worthy of Batman?3. There's a moment where Batman's costume subtly shifts from black to blue once he's in London. Is that just a visual cue, or is there something more symbolic going on there?4. What's your take on the annual format? Do you see it as a chance to tell something self-contained and weird, or a pressure cooker to do a lot in a single oversized issue?5. You're working with a trio of incredible artists—Stefano Raffaele, John McCrea, and Fico Ossio. How did you decide who handled which parts of the story, and what did each artist bring to the table stylistically?6. This annual flirts with the idea of Batman not just solving crimes but confronting the nature of reality. How far is too far for Batman, in your mind, when it comes to stories that push past the physical world?7. UK mythology and angels? John Dee's magic - Elizabethan 8. Maybe the most important question of them all, what is Batman's favorite tea and how does he take it?

What inspired this narrative, and how does it reflect on societal structures?Character Design: With twelve unique assassins in the story, what was your approach to designing each character to ensure they stood out visually and thematically? We're in a real horror renaissance in comics right now—whether it's the resurgence of EC-style anthologies, a wave of creator-owned horror books, or even Marvel events like Blood Hunt. How did Exquisite Corpses aim to stand out in such a crowded and creatively rich horror landscape? You mentioned in Kieron Gillen's newsletter you're now prioritizing creator-owned work and writing for yourself—but with so many collaborative roles still in play (writer, artist, visual coordinator), how do you protect your own creative bandwidth? Have you had to say no to projects you would have jumped at earlier in your career? You described the writer's room energy as electric, with unexpected story breakthroughs. Was there a specific moment or idea that surprised you the most—something that completely shifted the trajectory of the story or a character for you personally?Game Integration: The comic is accompanied by a trading card game. How did the development of the game influence the storytelling in the comic, and vice versa?Artistic Challenges: Given the horror elements and action sequences, what were some of the artistic challenges you faced in bringing this world to life?Influences: Were there specific films, books, or other media that influenced the aesthetic and tone of Exquisite Corpses?Future Plans: Is there potential for expanding the universe of Exquisite Corpses beyond the initial thirteen issues, perhaps into other media formats?Fun Question: If you were to participate in the deadly game depicted in Exquisite Corpses, which assassin would you choose to be, and why?Any romance in the series? What do you say to the haters who say, “This is just Squid Game!”?

It's a reunion at the end of the world as Eric Sipple joins Paul and Arlo for the latest Four-Color Flashback. Paul has invited everyone to The Nice House on the Lake, James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno's 2021-22 DC Black Label series about a group of old friends who have been sequestered from the apocalypse by their alien BFF. The gang discusses the way Tynion captures the feeling of being that friend who only has one other friend in the group, how Bueno uses his naturalistic and painterly style to evoke real horror, what the book says about what it takes to keep a group of adult humans from destroying each other, and much more. Plus, a whole bunch of casting announcements for Avengers: Doomsday and a trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another.   NEXT: Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can, like starring in the new Disney Plus animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:44  -  Intro / Guest 00:26:51  -  The Nice House on the Lake 02:11:10  -  Outro / Next   MUSIC “Drops in the Lake” by Lord Huron, Long Lost (2021) “Friends” by Whodini, Escape (1984)   GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Abortion Funds in Every State: https://bit.ly/AbortionFundsTwitter Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ The Trevor Project provides information and support to LGBTQ youth: thetrevorproject.org Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/  National Center for Transgender Equality: transequality.org Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://www.unduemedicaldebt.org/  Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

What inspired this approach, and what does it reveal about Wally's character?Jeff, you've tackled deeply personal, introspective stories before. How does Absolute Flash balance superhero spectacle with the kind of emotional storytelling you're known for?Nick, this series presents a unique visual challenge since Wally doesn't have the Speed Force in the usual sense. How did you approach illustrating motion, speed, and kinetic energy differently? The father-son dynamic seems central to the story. What can you tell us about the relationship between Wally and his father, and how it shapes the narrative? The Absolute line lets creators tell more standalone, auteur-driven superhero stories. What freedom did that give you in shaping this take on Wally West?Wally is often portrayed as an optimist. Without his usual safety nets, how does his personality shift in this story? Can you tease anything about the “nefarious forces” chasing Wally? Are these familiar faces from Flash lore, or entirely new threats?Favorite rogues? What do you hope Absolute Flash adds to Wally West's legacy as a character? With Absolute Flash, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Batman all reimagining these heroes in bold new ways, if Wally had to team up with the Absolute versions of Diana and Bruce, what would their dynamic be like? Who's the most intimidating, and who's the most likely to crack a joke?

What inspired you to delve into the concept of time's fragility and its impact on everyday life? The anthology format allows for diverse storytelling. How do you approach crafting each issue to ensure it offers a unique yet cohesive experience within the overarching narrative?Ashley, introduced in issue #1, is a relatable character amidst the chaos. Can you share more about her development and the role she plays in grounding the story? Collaborating with artists like Eric Zawadzki brings a distinct visual style to the series. How does his artistic vision complement your storytelling, and what has the collaborative process been like? The series blends various genres and time periods. How do you balance these elements to maintain narrative coherence while keeping readers engaged? In previous discussions, you've mentioned the importance of density in storytelling. How do you ensure that each page is packed with meaningful content without overwhelming the reader? The theme of normalizing chaos is prevalent in the series. How does this reflect contemporary societal issues, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?If you could witness any historical event firsthand, which one would you choose, and how might it inspire a future story in Assorted Crisis Events? You've crafted 20th Century Men and The Ultimates. How has your experience with those projects influenced your approach to Assorted Crisis Events? How is it juggling multiple books? In The Ultimates #10, the Red Skulls—a neo-Nazi group—appropriate the Punisher's iconic skull logo. What motivated you to intertwine these specific symbols, and how do you perceive their combined significance within the narrative?Given your focus on individual character narratives, are there contemporary societal issues you aim to explore through specific characters in future issues? In Absolute Martian Manhunter, you've described the series as a "radical reinvention" of the character, blending psychological horror with superhero elements. Could you elaborate on the creative challenges and freedoms you've encountered in crafting this narrative within DC's Absolute Universe?

How do you balance those tones without losing the story's core message? The concept of Monkey Meat Island explores hyper-capitalism and corporate exploitation in surreal ways. What new angles or themes are you excited to explore in The Summer Batch? You describe Monkey Meat as a comic where you can "shed corporate expectations." How does that creative freedom shape the way you approach each issue or story? This new arc takes a summer magazine format with games and multiple tales per issue. What inspired this structure, and what do you think it brings to the reading experience?Characters and WorldbuildingFrom superhero monkeys to debt-collecting witches, the characters in Monkey Meat are wild and wonderfully diverse. Are there any new characters in The Summer Batch you're particularly excited for readers to meet?In previous issues, the Monkey Meat Company has a huge impact on the local, magical fauna. Does the environment of Monkey Meat Island evolve or play a role in this new arc?Art and CreativityYour art is incredibly dynamic and experimental. How does your artistic process change when you're working on an anthology with multiple stories in one issue versus a single, continuous narrative?Fun/Silly QuestionIf you were forced to take a vacation on Monkey Meat Island, what three survival items would you bring, and how would you avoid getting on the bad side of the local witches or demons?
