Sermon on the Second Commandment
Are there things currently in your life that are idols that you've never recognized before? As we jump back into our series walking through the Ten Commandments, special guest, Jeff McDaniel shares a message of conviction and faith to help us recognize the idols that divide our commitment from God.
The commandment not to make graven images is less about worshipping false idols and more about worshipping a version of the true God that we have manipulated and modified to the point that He is now false. We must remember that we have been created in the image of God. We must not seek to create God in our own image to suit our own needs.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Unfortunately, idolatry is alive and well here in the U.S. In fact, it is present in the lives of many churchgoers. This sermon looks at how the command to not have idols applies to us today.
We exist to ignite a passion in every person to glorify and enjoy God everywhere and in everything.
When we read the 2nd Commandment (make no graven images), we think: NOT ME. That's one commandment I haven't broken - I don't even have a chisel or a lathe - couldn't make one if I tried. That's because, when it comes to idols and idolatry, we tend to think of statues, temples and people in grass skirts on a National Geographic special. But idolatry has to do with your HEART. In this message, Max Vanderpool exposes 4 common idols of contemporary American life - and what to do about it.

Our heart determines our worship. Our worship either prevents or creates idolatry in our hearts. The heart is always the key.

Since God is God and Redeems us, we should faithfully respond to Him, avoiding the allure of idols.

The second commandment was given because of God's character and his love for his people.
Pastor Ken continues preaching from Exodus ch 20. Today's message focuses on the Second of the Ten Commandments.
Last week, the 1st Commandment told us that God alone is to be worshipped. This week, we continue with the 2nd Commandment - when we worship God, we are NOT to make any images. Why is this important? Because images and representations always cheapen God, and fail to capture his glory. How might we be tempted to do this? By creating a god of our own imagining, creating him as we wish him to be, instead of how he has revealed himself to us - in his Word, and in his son Jesus, and especially at the cross!
How should you worship? Series: Laws of Love Exodus 20:4-6 Daniel Crowther
We worship the true and living God, rather than idols and images of our own making. 1. God is the Creator, not the created 2. God is not found in what we make with our hands 3. God provides his own image
