Sunday, May 4, 2025 - John 4:21-26 | What does it mean to worship the Lord? What should that look like in service? Throughout the week?
Worshipping authentically is one of our church’s Core Values. But what does it mean? To worship authentically is to “worship God in spirit and truth, both personally and together as a wholehearted response to who God is and what He has done.” To help us consider what authentic worship looks like, let’s turn to Isaiah 6:1-9, where we discover that authentic worship isn’t about the rituals, music, or performances—it’s about a real encounter with the living God that humbles us, cleanses us, and sends us out.

Individuals with dementia might find certain aspects of Christian worship to be uncomfortable, scary, or upsetting. We need to think about those things and adapt to them.

Pastor Mike emphasized the importance of living a life centered on worship, which he defined as a lifestyle encompassing all aspects of our being, not just singing. He discussed the difference between being religious and having a relationship with Jesus, highlighting that true worship comes from understanding God's extravagant love for us. By illustrating the concept of stingy versus extravagant worship, he challenged the congregation to examine how they live, serve, and express their love for God in every part of their lives. Ultimately, Pastor Mike encouraged everyone to fully embrace their identity as worshipers and to live with an open heart that reflects gratitude and dependence on God's grace.

In Exodus 32, we hear the story of the Israelites worshipping the golden calf and how this is a call to remind us to live in faith, even amidst perceived abandonment by God.

Most people spend their lives worshipping people they don't know and some will do anything for them. Many people worship their significant others only to end up losing self. Worshipping people won't make them want to get to know you, want to be with you, or want to love you. If people spent half the time getting to know and love self than they do worshipping others, their lives would be so much better. Investing into everyone and everything, while you neglect self is of no benefit to you! It leads to manipulation and falling for people and things that aren't good for you. Many people end up believing things that aren't true because they give their power to those they worship and those people feed off of the power given to them. The people they worship oftentimes use them and brainwash them to do what they want and to think, feel, and act like them. It's a terrible situaiton people get in. It doesn't matter who it is, if you worship someone they will manipulate you in some way.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/relationships-and-relatable-life-chronicles--4126439/support.

Send us a textLoving God's Word - Ben WalkerA major effort that may be lacking in your family life is worshipping as a family unit. I know I can stomach to be a better leader in my family by guiding a study of the Bible more. Ben Walker specifically joins us today to discuss our generation's need to regain this leadership in our daily lives. Daily reading, singing, prayer, and recitation in your home to help your family grow closer to God. Worshipping together with your loved ones. This has duplicitous effects on your home life. First, training of your children in essential skills of study by modeling behavior and attentiveness in your home. Secondly, the growth and development of spiritual matters in your home unit, as life's topics can be discussed and considered as daily habit. Thirdly, bringing up your children with the love of one another and of God's word. This endeavor is worth consideration and development in your home schedules. What else could possibly be more important?Ben Walker is preacher at Taylor's Church of Christ outside Greenville, SC. He joins us for a in-studio discussion as part of his activities for the Young Adult Weekend: Career and Family. Taking the name of the Lord and turning to Him with devotion leads to sanctifying one's life. To urge man on the path of devotion and worship, God presents Himself as the ‘Easily Pleased One'. Sri Rudram is the heartfelt worship of that benign Supreme. Smt Lalitha Srinivasan, wife of Sri J Srinivasa Sharma, who officiated as the head priest during the just-concluded Ati Rudra Maha Yajna, explains the importance of worshipping Lord Shiva with anecdotes from the Puranas and insights about the significance of the Sri Rudram.
Pastor Phelps preaches through the commendation of Abel in Hebrews 11:4 and shows us that the worship we engage in needs to directed by Scripture. Message originally preached Sunday evening February 23, 2025.
Stephanie engages in a heartfelt conversation with renowned worship leader Darlene Zschech, who likes to remind us that learning to trust God is a superpower! Darlene invites us into a life of authentic worship. She challenges us to cultivate a heart rooted in humility, to pursue genuine connection with God, and to understand the profound impact of living a life centered around worship. Darlene emphasizes the necessity of approaching worship without pressure or performance. She underscores that God's love is unconditional and is not influenced by our achievements or failures. This invites us to worship and create from a place of freedom, where we can focus on building a sincere relationship with God rather than seeking approval or validation from others. Darlene shares her own journey, highlighting how she learned to adore God not for His gifts or as a task to check off, but simply to be in His presence. God's delight in us is not contingent upon our accomplishments, but is inherent to our relationship with Him. Engaging with God without any agenda other than presence leads to an authentic worship experience. Darlene's wisdom reminds us that trusting God is a superpower. Her personal experiences, including battling cancer, illustrate God's faithfulness and the necessity of discerning His voice. Humility in worship is non-negotiable. Darlene speaks to the trap of self-sufficiency, particularly for those naturally inclined to leadership and capability. She insists on the importance of shedding self-reliance and embracing humility to fully trust and depend on God. In a world craving attention, Darlene values the hidden life and the importance of remaining true to worship's essence. Her journey reminds us to fight for a culture of truth and humility. Darlene's experiences illustrate the significance of nurturing deep roots in God's Word and maintaining accountability in our faith walk. She cautions against the allure of fame and the pressure to create commercialized versions of worship, advocating instead for a focus on genuine expression that aligns with God's heart. Darlene's testimony of God's faithfulness during her battle with cancer is particularly moving, as she reminds us to trust both God's whisper and shouts alike. Nurturing a close relationship with God prepares us to discern His guidance during pivotal moments. Stephanie asks Darlene about the church's role in cultivating worship leaders. Darlene stresses the importance of mentoring and discipleship within worship teams, encouraging leaders to uphold a culture of truth, confidence, and humility. This environment ensures that the focus remains on facilitating worship towards God rather than self-glorification. Darlene's experience with Christians in India teaches us about true devotion and reliance on God. When comfort isn't an option, desperation calls out to God, showcasing His incredible faithfulness. Here are some of the key insights Stephanie will remember from her conversation with Darlene. Make them your own, or add some more! 1. Embrace Your Identity in Christ: God loves you unconditionally, regardless of your actions or achievements. 2. Delight in God's Presence: Prioritize spending time with God, not just for what you can gain, but for simply being with Him. 3. Practice Humility and Confidence: Strive for the combination of these qualities in your faith and life. 4. Cultivate a Life of Worship: Lead others to focus on God's worth, not your own abilities. 5. Seek to Align Desires with God's Will: Spend time in His word to align your heart with His plan. 6. Nurture a Hidden Life: Value your private relationship with God over public recognition. 7. Be Anchored in a Sure Foundation: Start each day with devotion and prayer, positioning yourself for what the day brings. 8. Serve with Excellence: Honor God through high standards in your work, recognizing Him as the source of your abilities. 9. Surrender to God's Will: Continually submit your life to Him and trust in His faithfulness. 10. Remember God's Faithfulness: Regularly reflect on and remember His past faithfulness as a source of encouragement. 11. Lead by Example in Worship: Facilitate a genuine connection between people and God, elevating them to see His worth. 12. Guard Your Heart: Continually examine and protect your heart against pride and complacency. 13. Embrace the Power of Influence: Use influence responsibly and to glorify God, while ensuring roots are deep in His word. 14. Remain Teachable: Continuously seek mentorship and embrace correction and growth. 15. Trust God Beyond Self-Reliance: Let go of self-sufficiency and put trust fully in God, who desires to guide your path. 16. Value Discipleship and Community: Learn from and contribute to the community around you for spiritual growth. In addition to “Shout to the Lord,” Darlene's catalog includes “In Jesus Name,” “Victor's Crown”, “Worthy is the Lamb,” and over a hundred others which have greatly contributed to the worship in the contemporary Church worldwide. Darlene is passionate about raising and training other worship pastors, leaders, teams, and writers. To this end, she has penned six books which have been translated internationally. Darlene and Mark live in the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales with their family: Amy and her husband Andrew, Chloe and her husband Hosanna, Zoe and her husband Matthew and their six beautiful grandchildren Ava, Roman, Ruthie, Thea, Elias and Nora. MORE ABOUT “TESTAMENT”, DARLENE'S LATEST ALBUM New album "Testament" is not just about memories, it's a statement that worship leads to encountering Christ afresh in every moment. Australian worship leader Darlene Zschech unveils her highly anticipated studio album, “Testament.” The new release marks the milestone 30-year anniversary of “Shout to the Lord,” a song that became an anthem for the church worldwide. It is also a stake in the ground to the faithfulness of God, as the title track declares: “My testament is you.” Stirred by friends and family, Zschech crafted a collection of 25 reimagined legacy songs and five brand-new tracks. From iconic songs such as “Cry of the Broken” and “Victor's Crown,” to fresh offerings like “Spirit of the Living God” and “Yes Again,” each song carries a powerful sound that is just as vibrant today. It also features many artists like Martin Smith, SVRICINA, Mitch Wong, and Michael W. Smith among others, as well as various choirs and the Australian Christian Orchestra, creating an expansive and eclectic project filled with the sound of praise, thanksgiving, and rich collaboration. This album embodies Zschech's story and her experience of God's unfailing love, not only in worship ministry but in each intricate details of her life too. It's a family project, described by the artist as “songs that have deep meaning to my family, that have helped shape me and kept my focus heavenward.” “Testament” weaves together songs that have been the soundtrack to her children's lives, her battle with cancer, and her adventures planting churches and starting non-profits alongside her husband. It also features multiple family members, including Zschech's daughter, Zoe Cameron, on “Shout to the Lord.” Commenting on this central song, which was penned before Zoe's birth, Zschech said: “I wrote it quickly while crying out to God about our future, saying that no matter what, we will follow him. I was young in age and young in God. ‘Shout to the Lord' changed things around us, but the things that really matter never changed and never will: God is faithful and attentive to our prayers.” Harnessing this central theme of faithfulness, “Testament” communicates its close relationship to obedience and thankfulness. It's the sound flowing out of a lifetime lived with the Lord, the very meaning of worship. Zschech is adamant that worship is not a genre but the whole of one's life poured out for the glory of God: “I'll always find it hard to wrap my head around the miracle of worship, music, and song. There's really no other vehicle available to us on earth that has the ability to bring to attention our mind, auditory senses, resting our hearts, moving the soul and spirit to a point when your whole self is pointed in the one direction. Such is the power of worship as the Holy Spirit leads our heart heavenward, Jesus-ward, through the magnificent sound of sacred song.” “Testament” is not just about memories, but it's a statement that worship leads to encountering Christ afresh in every moment. Zschech's prayer is that this collection of songs would play a part in people's story as they too are reminded of God's incredible faithfulness. We all know relationship red flags—like when they say “I love Jesus” but their Bible is collecting more dust than their gym membership. But what about spiritual red flags? The sneaky, subtle ways we can look holy on the outside but be missing real, deep relationship with God? In this episode, we're doing a heart check, no judgment! Just laughs, real talk, and some hard truths about the difference between performing faith vs. actually living surrendered to God.
Shaking us free from idols prepares us to move into what God has next for us. But we can't do much moving at all if we're too busy looking at the way God moved in the past that we forget to look to our WAYMAKER. Encounter Questions: - What way (looking for God to do a specific thing) have I been worshipping that has taken my eyes off the waymaker? - What truth do you want to tell me about who You are that will prepare me for Your Promises?
It's common for us to hear people say things like, "Well, MY God isn't like that!" and what they mean is that they don't like the God of the Bible, and have tried to imagine God being more the way they'd like. That's dangerous and today we'll see it's also not new. So, join us in our study of Exodus 32 as we continue to dig into the powerful and relevant truths of God's Word. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. If a person hears the Bible's teaching about God, and says something like, “Oh, my god isn't like that!” How might that be an indication that that person is worshipping a false god? 2. In the opening verses, Moses is delayed and the people grew impatient. They asked Aaron to make a god for them. Why do you think they wanted this “god” to be made? Why do you think Aaron went along with it? What does this teach us about how they viewed God? 3. In verse 4, Aaron took their gold and made it into the shape of a calf and declared, “This is your God, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!” This is stunning for many reasons; one of which is that the Egyptians worshipped a god that was represented by bulls. Do you think any of past experiences in Egypt was part of their present embracing of this idol? What can we learn from this about the dangers of associating the true God with things we know and are familiar with? 4. In verse 19, Moses threw down the two tablets containing the commandments of the covenant. How did this act of breaking the tablets reflect their broken covenant with the Lord? 5. The podcast suggests that Aaron's excuse in verse 24, that the fire produced the golden calf, was a form of religious charlatanry or perhaps magical thinking. How do people still do things like this today when they talk about the Lord? 6. In verse 26, when Moses said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!” Who came over to him? What did they do? How was this an act of mercy? 7. The podcast mentions a change in how the Lord would abide with the people. According to Exodus 33:7, where was Tabernacle moved to? Why? 8. How does this passage show us the danger of looking to re-making God to be like something that “we” like versus what He has revealed about Himself? 9. How does this passage also show us the principle that we don't decide how to worship God? 10. How do we see that worship is not about what “we” want but what the Lord wants? 11. How does this passage show us the importance of trusting God's timeline? What are the dangers of rushing things according to our schedule? Frankly, our tendency to associate worship solely with music is like limiting ourselves to one food group for every single meal for the rest of our lives – I love Tex Mex y'all, but if I had to eat chips and queso three times a day, every day, for the rest of my life it would be sadly and unnecessarily reductive! In the Christian context, worship is so much wider and deeper and more comprehensive than a song list or a musical genre. Case in point, listen to what one of our favorite theologians here at BPT – Dr. N.T. Wright – says about the centrality of worship: All kingdom work is rooted in worship. Or, to put it the other way around, worshipping the God we see at work in Jesus is the most politically charged act we can ever perform. Christian worship decares that Jesus is Lord and that therefore, by strong implication, nobody else is. What's more, it doesn't just declare it as something to be believed, like the fact that the sun is hot or the sea wet. It commits the worshipper to allegiance, to following this Jesus, to being shaped and directed by him. Worshipping the God we see in Jesus orients our whole being, our imagination, our will, our hopes, and our fears away from the world where Mars, Mammon, and Aphrodite (violence, money, and sex) make absolute demands and punish anyone who resists. It orients us instead to a world in which love is stronger than death, the poor are promised the kingdom, and chastity (whether married or single) reflects the holiness and faithfulness of God himself. Acclaiming Jesus as Lord plants a flag that supersedes the flags of our nations, however “free” or “democratic” they may be. In other words, WORSHIP is the fruit and fuel of our faith, the flagpole we rally around as those who've been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Worship is the very essence of our spiritual DNA. Just as a half dozen and six communicate the same number of eggs, to have faith in Jesus Christ and to be a worshipper should be synonymous. Worship isn't simply a verb for the musically inclined among us, it should be the passionate preoccupation of God's people. Okay, as you can tell we're pretty fired up today so you'd better grab a cup of something caffeinated and your Bible – unless you're listening to this while simultaneously trying to figure out how to increase the incline on the treadmill at the gym you just joined because you're determined to ditch the Spanx in 2025 – and come hang out on the porch with us for some genuine, digital community and hopefully some real encouragement. We're really grateful to get to spend this time hanging out with y'all. Save on Dwell hereLearn More about Upward Sports here
