Word of Life Bible Reading: Slow to Quit, Quick to Pray - Pastor Tom JJ Wood (03/08/2026) by Word of Life Assembly of God
In a world that craves justice and quick judgments, James reminds us that only God is the true Judge. In this message, Pastor Tom unpacks James 4:10–12, showing how a judgmental spirit flows from pride and places us in God's position. While Scripture calls believers to take sin seriously, it also calls us to humility, mercy, and restoration. Instead of condemning others, we're invited to examine our own hearts, love our brothers and sisters well, and trust God with ultimate judgment. Because the one true Judge—the one who knows every heart—has chosen mercy through Jesus Christ.

In week two of our "Journey to Jerusalem" Lenten series, Pastor Tom Kang takes an honest look at one of Jesus' most famous—and most domesticated—teachings: the Parable of the Good Samaritan.Set against the backdrop of real-world headlines, global conflicts, and anxieties right here in Los Angeles, this message challenges us to look beyond our comfortable boundaries. Pastor Tom unpacks how Jesus flipped the legal expert's question from a static "who is my neighbor?" to an action-oriented "who has become a neighbor?" We are reminded that true compassion requires proximity, not just policy, and that love in action means stepping into the messiness of life rather than passing by on the other side.

Indecision isn't solved by clever one-liners—it's transformed by a vision of the glory of Jesus Christ. In this message from James 4, Pastor Tom calls us to “decide already.” Confronting our double-minded hearts, divided between God and the world, he shows how conflict, pride, and compromise flow from misaligned loyalties. The answer isn't trying harder—it's seeing Christ more clearly and submitting fully to Him. “Resist the devil, draw near to God,” James says, and He will draw near to you. This is a call to wholehearted devotion, daily repentance, and decisive alignment under the gracious, glorious lordship of Jesus.

In this sermon, Pastor Tom preached from Acts 2:42-47. In this passage, we see the early church as a devoted church. A devoted church to spiritual things and not earthly things. Why were they devoted? Because they were a Spirit-filled church. They were indwelled by the Holy Spirit, dependent on the Holy Spirit, and controlled by the Holy Spirit. As they devoted themselves to spiritual things, God used their devotion to carry the gospel to the whole world! As followers of Jesus, what are we devoted to? Check out this sermon to learn more!
What if Lent isn't primarily about giving something up… but about accepting an invitation? In The Invitation, Pastor Tom VanAntwerp takes us to Exodus 33 and the powerful image of the Tent of Meeting—a place Moses set up outside the camp where he met with God “face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” It's a stunning picture of intimacy. In a noisy, hurried, performance-driven world, God extends a simple but profound invitation: Come away. Quiet the noise. Slow down. Meet with Me. Lent often feels heavy—ashes, repentance, reflection. But beneath it is something deeply hopeful. God delights in you. He knows you by name. And He longs to fill the canvas of these forty days with His presence, rest, and renewal. In this message, Pastor Tom explores three tensions we all feel: • A quiet spirituality in a noisy world • A slow spirituality in a hurried world • A relational spirituality in a transactional culture Spiritual disciplines like Sabbath, fasting, and prayer are not about proving ourselves to God. They are about posturing ourselves to receive what He is already pouring out. And in the middle of Moses' anxiety and unanswered questions, God makes this promise: “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14) That promise still stands. This message is an invitation—into nearness, into delight, into relationship. The God of the universe is not asking for better performance. He is inviting you into friendship.

This sermon from Pastor Tom Messer addresses the critical question of what the Bible teaches about sin, emphasizing that sin is not merely about breaking rules but about rejecting God's wisdom. Pastor Tom explores how sin is deceitful, destructive, and leads to darkness, while contrasting it with the path of wisdom and righteousness. Drawing heavily from Proverbs, he emphasizes that victory over sin requires cultivating biblical wisdom, guarding one's heart, and ultimately looking to Jesus Christ as the light that overcomes darkness. Pastor Tom really challenges listeners to recognize that sin is actively seeking to destroy them and that they must daily pursue God's wisdom and strength to walk the narrow path toward life rather than the broad path toward destruction.
One of the core characteristics of a healthy church is the radical generosity of God's grace to us in Jesus Christ resulting in our radical generosity toward others.
