Also: A recent poll shows that, incredibly, only a tiny minority of likely Republican voters in Mississippi and Alabama believe that President Obama is a Christian. Fully 88% of Mississippi Republicans either believe he is a Muslim or say they are unsure what religion he practices. The numbers are only slightly better in Alabama. And speaking of Alabama...he's b-a-a-a-ck! Roy Moore, the former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, who was removed from office a few years ago for refusing to uninstall a massive Ten Commandments monument he had placed in the Supreme Court building, is seeking re-election and has just won the Republican primary. He assures us he has no intention of revisiting the Ten Commandments issue. Which makes us feel so much better. Giveaway! Richard Dawkins will be speaking in metro Atlanta on Tuesday, March 27th. Thanksgiving reflections on America’s food supply and the theocracy that one author says governs the “land of our pilgrims’ pride.” As the nation celebrates Thanksgiving, professor Robert Paarlberg summarizes the politics of food in a country where obesity may be more of a problem than hunger. This year, Thanksgiving coincides with Hanukkah -- and the role of God and religion in our civic life is the subject of a provocative interview with Sean Faircloth, a former legislator from Maine and an advocate of strict separation of church and state. And Bill Press interviews California Congressman Sam Farr. Robert Paarlberg Robert Paarlberg is an expert on food. In addition to summarizing the science and politics of food production, he notes that the biggest health threat from American agriculture is not on the farm or in the labs of Monsanto but in our own kitchens. http://robertpaarlberg.net Sean Faircloth Church and state expert Sean Faircloth – he wants to separate them – reminds us on Thanksgiving that despite the prayers we might offer privately, the only reference to religion in the Constitution is its exclusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWIrK-Fv6M8 Sam Farr Bill Press and his guest, Congressman Sam Farr, who represents California’s Central Coast. http://www.farr.house.gov/ Jim Hightower Billionaires reap a cornucopia of farm subsidy cash.
The rise of a theocratic America … the decline of the American economy … and a preview of the 2014 gubernatorial races. Sean Faircloth is a former state legislator and now an advocate for separation of church and state. He says that the intrusion of religion into government can have deadly consequences. Economist George Tyler tells us what went wrong with the American economy. One short answer, he says, is “stock options.” And Bill Press interviews Danny Kanner of the Democratic Governors Association about how the Virginia race could be a bellwether for Democratic gains next year. Sean Faircloth Washington, Adams and Jefferson could not be elected president today because they didn’t profess a belief in God, says secularist Sean Faircloth. And, says the former state legislator, religion intrusion into policy can cause the death of children. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWIrK-Fv6M8 George Tyler What caused the Great Recession? Former World Bank economist George Tyler has a few answers for us, but mainly he says it was the development of stock options for management – making the goal a spike in quarterly profits. http://www.georgertyler.com/ Danny Kanner Bill Press and his guest, Danny Kanner of the Democratic Governors Association. https://twitter.com/DannyKanner Jim Hightower The Ignoble Prize For Agriculture.

Host: Chris Mooney A common goal of freethinkers, humanists, skeptics, and atheists is to preserve Thomas Jefferson's "wall of separation" between church and state. But we haven't always been successful in this area—help from the courts notwithstanding—or at beating back the steady advances of the religious right. How can we do better? Our guest this week has a new book on the topic, and just as important, a new way of thinking. His name is Sean Faircloth, the director of strategy and policy for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. Before that, Faircloth served five terms in the Maine Legislature and went on to serve as executive director for the Secular Coalition for America. He's author of the newly released book Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All and What to Do About It.

Sean's 10 point plan. Sean's book: Reviews: Shocking! Will keep you on the edge of your seat! Sean Faircloth is doing such important work. There's not a doubt in my mind that if he was (suddenly, inexplicably) zapped back in time to meet Thomas Jefferson, that the Founding Father would clap him on the shoulder and say ‘Thanks.'” –Adam Savage, MythBusters co-host and executive producer. “Faircloth paints a sobering picture, but fortunately, as anyone who has heard his speeches knows, he also has an inspiring and invigorating vision to offer. . . . Readers will finish the book exercised, energized, and eager to join Faircloth in a bold rediscovery of the secular dream of the European Enlightenment and America's enlightened Fathers.” – Richard Dawkins, from the foreword to Attack of the Theocrats! “I've devoted the last twenty years of my professional life to pointing out unscientific assertions that harm or swindle innocent people. It becomes particularly insidious when unsound reasoning is used to justify and apply unjust laws. This book describes this very real problem in American today, then offers a bold plan to do something about it.” –James Randi, Founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation “What does the erosion of America's noble separation of church and state the basis of the first secular government in the world have to do with your everyday life? In this lively and historically grounded survey of the way we live now, the author explains why the thirty-year-old assault on church-state separation affects all of us from children who are not getting a world-class education in science because of fundamentalist interference with the teaching of biology to soldiers subjected to evangelical proselytizing on military bases. Nothing could be more timely than this reminder that the founders left God out of the Constitution to provide citizens of every faith and no faith the freedom to act on their consciences. We ignore this historic liberty, the gift of America's founding generation, at our peril.” –Susan Jacoby, Author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism and The Age of American Unreason “Faircloth makes a compelling case for people everywhere to steadily reestablish Thomas Jefferson's fundamental idea and keep religions out of politics. Read this, and you'll become a Constitution thumper.” –Bill Nye the Science Guy

Sean Faircloth calls in to discuss his new book: Attack of the Theocrats.
This past week has been particularly troubling for secular humanists and freethinkers, as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the words "In God We Trust" on American currency and "Under God" as part of the Pledge of Allegiance are not in violation of the First Amendment rights of nontheists. Meanwhile, the conservative majority of the Texas State Board of Education (whose sheer size and buying power influence textbook content nationwide) revised its curricula to reflect a less secular version of history, economics and sociology. Among other revisionist changes, this reduces the role of President Thomas Jefferson as a revolutionary author. This week on Skepticality, Swoopy talks with Sean Faircloth (the new Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America) about these troubling current events. Sean also talks about the Coalition's recent historic meeting with White House officials to open a policy dialog with the Obama Administration — the first of its kind for American nontheists.
The distinguished civil rights attorney George Daly, of Charlotte, N.C., will talk about the lawsuit he has filed on behalf of FFRF and two South Carolina parents, challenging the granting of academic credit for religious release-time instruction. Also interviewed will be the new director of Secular Coalition of America, who is an attorney and a former Maine legislator.
