We're not just a tech podcast; we're a tech & culture podcast. So today, we’re revisiting the charming and prescient 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Smart House. Directed by the multi-talented Levar Burton, it explores the role of smart home technology on a suburban family from a time when that technology was pure science fiction. It's not only a fun movie, but underneath its G-rated Disney veneer is a movie that has a lot to say about gender, relationships, labor, and the human experience. A major part of the movie is the kids' grappling with the loss of their mother, which hits home for Bridget at this time in her own life. Bridget recaps the film with Producer Mike to explore what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and what it’s trying to say about technology and the people who use it. Do you like film recap episodes like this? Should we do more of them? Should we never do another? Please let us know what you think, and send movie suggestions! When Musk started working with Trump last year, we all knew it was only a matter of time before they had a big, messy, public split-up. We waited and we waited. Dear listener, the day has arrived. Today, June 5th, 2025, Donald Trump and Elon Musk have spent the day tearing each other apart on social media. It has been personal and it has been viscius, with all the drama of a big celebrity break-up or a Real Housewives reunion. So at the last minute, we decided to skip our regularly-scheduled News Roundup, and instead do an emergency episode about this extraordinary turn of events. Bridget and Producer Mike recap how the Musk-Trump bromance got started, how it unravelled so spectacularly over the past couple days, and what this fight between billionaires really means for the future of Democracy in America. It’s been grim times for folks on the left, and I think we’ve all earned the right to kick back and enjoy the drama as these two dangerous narcissists try to destroy each other. It's just two of your favorite Fiorentina podcast idiots in this one--McMike's off listening to birdsong to write an Oliver Messiaen-type symphony--but we've got enough gloom for the three of us. Producer Mike and Tito run through the grimmest week of results in recent Viola memory. Yep, we're talking about losses at opposite ends of the spectrum (Real Betis and Venezia) that result in similar outcomes: goodbye Europe. Don't worry, though. We don't confine ourselves to just that one kind of sadness. We look ahead to the potential repercussions of missing out on continental competition, looking at who might be edging towards the exit and which loanees saw their chances of sticking in Florence drastically reduced. We tried to avoid going full Zack Snyder and interspersed the grim dark greys and muted blues with the odd Wes Anderson pastel: Producer Mike pouring his first-ever beer, for example, or Tito trying to combine American football, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and a shrimp. EDITOR'S NOTE: We didn't talk about the Celje win (?) because we recorded a couple days beforehand. Due to real world constraints, by which we mean Producer Mike's day job, this one's a couple days behind. Anyways, it's the Tito and Hines show today as McMike is on a super-secret special assignment that certainly doesn't involve hiding in suburban New Jersey shrubbery. We had a somewhat grim conversation about the dire draw against Parma and a somewhat less grim conversation about the first leg win at Celje before swerving into predictions for the rest of the season and then descending back into the serious stuff about the newest betting scandal hitting Serie A, which touches on a couple of Fiorentina players. Come for the heavy topics but stick around for the more important stuff: where McMike is, what conspiracy of primates knocked Producer Mike out of commission as we recorded, and Tito's triumphant return to What Are You Drinking. The effects of trauma can show up in weird ways throughout our lives. Maybe a certain song takes you back to when you were 12 and your parents told you they were getting a divorce, maybe there's a smell that takes you back to your first love and first real heartbreak, or maybe, like Paige shares in todays episode, it's watching your son break his arm and feeling utterly helpless to fix his pain. We've all experienced trauma in our lives and, when left unresolved - pushed down, hidden beneath distractions, masked with lies of being “fine” - it can rear its head with no warning. In this episode, Paige and producer Mike share with raw honesty some of their own traumatic experiences and encourage listeners that wherever you stand with your trauma, you can move through it towards hope and healing.Paige ClingenpeelQuestions About the Podcast? GUEST BIO: henry bronchtein Henry Bronchtein was born and raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sons of a cab-driver father and a homemaker. Henry attended New York University's Tisch School of The Arts to study filmmaking. Perhaps his first big break was working on Raging Bull (1980), as the apprentice assistant director to fellow NYU alumnus, Martin Scorsese. "As a child I was an avid reader, devouring every novel and every comic book put in front of me. I am a member of the first generation to be raised on television. Growing up my favorite shows were Rod Serling 's The Twilight Zone (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), I Love Lucy (1951), and The Honeymooners (1955). I particularly loved Jackie Gleason''s vision of the working-class life of a bus driver living in Bensonhurst. It not only made me laugh it seemed to illustrate and illuminate my life. "When I was sick, my mother would go to the corner candy store and buy every comic book on the stand for me. She would install me on the living room couch, in front of the TV with them. There I'd lay with a blanket, a pillow and a glass of hot tea laced with a teaspoon of cognac; this was the prescription for healing. I would rest there for hours, reading and watching television, engrossed in the worlds of drama and comedy. At an early age I experienced their ability to reach me in important ways." ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities.   Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. Let's escape December's darkness with a mental vacation to some exotic travel locales. Tulum! Bali! Lisbon! Millions of people visit these popular tourist destinations, but why? Is it for personal growth and discovery, or are we just chasing social rewards by notching another iconic photo on our Instagram page? Maybe it's both!  The idea that "social media has ruined travel" gets brought up a lot by grumbly Internet curmudgeons, but is it true? Bridget took a look at what social science has to say about it and discussed what she found with Producer Mike.  Read the research article by Drs. Lauren A. Your favorite Fiorentina podcast idiots have decided to sit down in front of their microphones and tempt fate in a way that would make a Sophocles protagonist wince. That's right, we're still flushed with the afterglow of a Moise Kean-inspired win over Hellas Verona and, as we gaze into the abyss of the international break, we're feeling okay. Fine. Good, even. Because we're trying to figure out if Fiorentina is actually good. And you know what? We do. We break down that Verona game, naturally, and compare it to some other recent and perhaps slightly less enjoyable wins against mid-table opposition. We sing Kean's praises, of course, but also dip into some of the less noticeable heroes as well (central defenders, this one's for you). After that, we dip into the depth chart and what the injuries--Albert Guðmundsson, Danilo Cataldi, Marin Pongračić--mean for a team competing on three fronts. We also (big sigh) dip into the winter transfer market, looking at what kind of player the club should target after the APOEL loss laid bare the issues at certain key positions. Along the way, we learned about McMike's grandmother's communication advice, what plant-based beverage Producer Mike will shill for, and just how far Tito can stretch a pit bull metaphor. Big thank you to the Sport Social Podcast Network for hosting us and to Windchime Weather for the music. Hit us with questions on the website or on Twitter. Still wrapped in the warm embrace of a 5-1 battering of Roma, your favorite Fiorentina podcast idiots are in as good a mood as they've been in for quite some time. McMike and Tito open with a long discussion about that incredible performance against the listless Giallorossi, trying to figure out if the limit exists for this edition of the Viola. After that, we run down the injury list, which launches us into a conversation about the current squad depth, which is somehow simultaneously frightening and also better than it's been in years. We round this episode off with a quick look ahead to the Genoa and Torino games, making some predictions that'll send you to look for some holy water, just in case. Along the way, we learn about McMike's masochistic Wheaties, what kind of cloud Producer Mike would be, and Tito's lonely tennis games. Big thanks to the Sport Social Podcast Network for hosting us and to Windchime Weather for the music. Hit us up on the website or on Twitter if you've got questions. Picture the scene: your kid tells you so-and-so's parent (your friend) said something mean about them to someone else. You see red. There's no deep breath, there's no prayer sent heavenward - you pick up your phone, shoot off a text…and then come to find out it was all a big misunderstanding. UGH. Friends, we've all been there. Parenting fails are REAL and probably more frequent than we want. So, how do we handle these moments of embarrassment and use them as teaching moments for our kids? Paige and producer Mike Segovia tackle this subject by vulnerably sharing some of their recent fails. Get ready to cringe, laugh, and join them in solidarity as they examine what they would have done differently, and how we can use our shortcomings to model integrity to our kids.Takeaways:Continue to create opportunities for your kids to come to you.If you fail (as we all do), ask forgiveness and then ask your kids what you can do differently to support them next time. Paige ClingenpeelQuestions About the Podcast?
