Today, I am expanding on my blog post about The Telepathy Tapes. Please find the original blog post on my website: www.synergyautismcenter.com Ky Dickens actually seems in support of autistic spellers and keyboarders. The podcast, however, is about telepathy. It is not about whether or not autistics can use augmented means to communicate like using a keyboard or letter board. My concerns are squarely on the fact that autistics should not be used to prove telepathy when their communication using these augmented means is already under fire by so many. I worry (and it has been confirmed) that speech language pathologists and others who criticize the use of letter boards and/or keyboards to communicate now have additional fodder to weaken the legitimacy of autistics communicating in these ways. My concerns were recently confirmed when I joined a respected speech and language pathologist “watch party” where we all watched the actual videos of the autistics on the podcast communicating their telepathy. As the videos were played, the argument was NOT on whether they were telepathic but on whether or not they were even communicating. The majority of the participants were arguing that they were not actually communicating anything let alone telepathy. I very pointedly argued that the tapes were NOT to prove communication but to prove telepathy. Therefore, they should not be under fire for whether or not they were communicating. While they did shift their conversation and agreed with me, my point was made in that setting and not in so many more conversations. People across the world listening will now question the legitimacy of a vulnerable population communicating through means that are already questionable and in dire need of further research. Next, I spoke with a friend who is autistic and a magician. He turned my attention to James Randi, The Amazing Randi, who was a magician who turned his work to people using “magic” to trick people into believing they are telepathic, speaking to God, the deceased, etc. and getting money for it. He thought it was tragic and criminal, of course. My friend (Jonathan Chase, if you know him) helped me consider that one of the many ways to “trick” people is to use a vulnerable population in their providing “proof." Because then if you voice your doubt, you are speaking against a vulnerable population - which we just wouldn't think of doing, right!? ugh. I never intended to imply that Ky Dickens was against Autistic people using Spelling and Keyboards to communicate. In fact, she seems to be in support of it. The podcast's focus is on telepathy, not on whether Autistic people can use these tools to communicate.

WoooOOOOOoooOOOOOoooo, it's that time of year again! It's Halloween, so it's time for The Studies Show hosts to face their fears, and read the research from one of the weirdest areas of science, parapsychology. This time it's all about psychic mediums. What does it mean to test whether someone can talk to the dead? Are we any better at doing it now than we were 100 years ago at the height of “spiritualism”? And what do the most recent results tell us about the existence of the afterlife?Happy Halloween!
I found Chris Knowles in the woods, and decided to record him for episode 409 of the Highway Diary podcast. We talk about his new book, "The Synchro Mystic Handbook" and how this is a force of nature to be worked with, but not controlled. We talk about how the state cult's failed attempts to wield this force for their own ends. We talk about different space-based ascension religions. We talk James Randi, the skeptics, and a little about the dissolving contract between men & women in the modern era.

Synopsis On a live broadcast during Halloween on sweeps week in 1977, a failing late night talk show starring Jack Delroy (played by David Dastmalchian) interviews a cult survivor supposedly possessed by a demon. The audience is amazed and horrified by the demonstration and Delroy soon finds himself out of his depth. But instead of heeding caution, he doubles down on the bit to save his show from cancellation to disastrous consequence. Review of Late Night with the Devil This movie has a great premise. What if you showed Regan from The Exorcist on a talkshow next to obvious fake psychics and debunkers that often appeared on late night. The talk show is a format that everyone is familiar with, and even the guests previous to the possessed little girl should all be recognizable stand ins for real life talk show guests such as Uri Gellar and James Randi. The biggest setback is that the writing and acting a little too on-the-nose, and it ends up feeling a little cringe. In what could be a super compelling and real-feeling found footage film, the artificiality really pulls you out of the moment and you definitely feel like you are watching a movie. It's like when you see a movie or show about a stand up comedian, and the actor isn't able to be convincingly funny but is met with uproarious laughter from the fake audience. It's a type of uncanny valley that is created when actors aren't able to match the charisma and timing of a seasoned professional, in this case, talk show host. They made the genius move to explain that this is a failing talk show, so Jack Delroy's wooden presence and indiscernible personality actually sells the “why”. That being said, this movie does have some good bones. The plot structure and utilization of the talk show format is great. It lends a new backdrop to the horror cliche of demonic possession. The tension ramps up convincingly, and the inevitable trainwreck that is foreshadowed is satisfying. I just wish they would have aimed for more realism in the writing and acting. Score 6/10

On today's episode we're taking a look at some of the rather silly psychic experiments conducted by the folks over at the Center for Inquiry, a non-profit organization dedicated to stopping the spread of nonsense and promoting reason and skepticism. We'll learn about the founder Paul Kurtz, secular humanism, ol' James Randi, and their history of legal battles against the most famous spoon bender in history, Uri Geller. They claim to be skeptics but are they actually haters? Or are we? Listen and find out!
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What is the next level of rationality?, published by lsusr on December 12, 2023 on LessWrong. Yudkowsky published Go Forth and Create the Art! in 2009. It is 2023. You and I agree that, in the last few years, there haven't been many rationality posts on the level of Eliezer Yudkowsky (and Scott Alexander). In other words, nobody has gone forth and created the art. Isn't that funny? What Came Before Eliezer? Yes, we agreed on that. I remarked that there were a few levels of rationality before Eliezer. The one directly before him was something like the Sagan-Feynman style rationality (who's fans often wore the label "Skeptics"). But that's mostly tangential to the point. Or perhaps it's not tangential to the point at all. Feynman was referenced by name in Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I have a friend in his 20s who is reading Feynman for the first time. He's discovering things like "you don't need a labcoat and a PhD to test hypotheses" and "it's okay to think for yourself". How do you see it connecting to the question "What's the next level of rationality?" Yudkowsky is a single datapoint. The more quality perspectives we have about what "rationality" is, the better we can extrapolate the fit line. I see, so perhaps a preliminary to this discussion is the question "which level of rationality is Eliezer's?"? Yeah. Eliezer gets extra attention on LessWrong, but he's not the only writer on the subject of rationality. I think we should start by asking who's in this cluster we're pointing at. Alright, so in the Feynman-Sagen cluster, I'd also point to Dawkins, Michael Shermer, Sam Harris, Hitchens, and James Randi, for example. Not necessarily because I'm very familiar with their works or find them particularly valuable, but because they seem like central figures in that cluster. Those are all reasonable names, but I've never actually read any of their work. My personal list include Penn Jillette. Paul Graham and Bryan Caplan feel important too, even though they're not branded "skeptic" or "rationality". I've read a bit, but mostly I just came late enough to the scene and found Eliezer and Scott quickly enough that I didn't get the chance to read them deeply before then, and after I did I didn't feel the need. Yep, and Paul Graham is also someone Eliezer respects a lot, and I think might have even been mentioned in the sequences. I guess you could add various sci-fi authors to the list. Personally, I feel the whole thing started with Socrates. However, by the time I got around to cracking open The Apology, I felt like I had already internalized his ideas. But I don't get that impression when I hang out with Rationalists. The median reader of Rationality: A-Z shatters under Socratic dialogue. I agree, though if we're trying to cut the history of rationality in periods/levels, then Socrates is a different (the first) period/level (Though there's a sense in which he's been at a higher level than many who came after him). I think Socrates' brilliance came from realizing how little capacity to know they had at the time, and fully developing the skill of not fooling himself. What others did after him was develop mostly the capacity to know, while mostly not paying as much attention to not fooling themselves. I think the "Skeptics" got on this journey of thinking better and recognizing errors, but were almost completely focused on finding them in others. With Yudkowsky the focus shifted inward in a very Socratic manner, to find your own faults and limitations. Tangent about Trolling as a core rationality skill I've never heard the word "Socratic" used in that way. I like it. Another similarity Yudkowsky has to Socrates is that they're both notorious trolls. That made me laugh. It's true. I remember stories from the Sequences of Dialogues he had with people who he b...

Astronomer Phil Plait joins us to discuss his new book, Under Alien Skies, in which he describes what it would be like (through human eyes and real physical experiences) to actually travel to Saturn, Mars, asteroids, and distant stars. Also, we discuss the recent surge in UFO sighting as well ad his famous talk at The Amazing Meeting more than a decade ago in which he asked all science communicators and critical thinkers to approach those who believe in pseudoscience with empathy and respect instead of scorn and vitriol. And, we run through the history of James Randi's popularization of the big-S Skeptic movement.- Phil Plait's Substack: https://badastronomy.substack.com/- How Minds Change: www.davidmcraney.com/howmindschangehome- David McRaney's Twitter: https://twitter.com/davidmcraney- YANSS Twitter: https://twitter.com/notsmartblog- Show Notes: www.youarenotsosmart.com- Newsletter: https://davidmcraney.substack.com
