We report on FFRF's efforts to keep Christian nationalists in check around the country. Honoring the anniversary of the birth of the anti-fascist singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie, we hear the funk/soul version of "This Land is Your Land" performed by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Then, FFRF's Legal Director Patrick Elliott describes our lawsuit challenging the Louisiana law requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in all public-school classrooms and our efforts to rein in Oklahoma's Christian nationalist State Superintendent of Public Education.
It's Casual Friday! Emma and the MR Crew break down the biggest headlines of the day. Then, they're joined by comedian Matt Lieb, co-host of the Bad Hasbara podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on the Supreme Court's upholding of the right to seize arms from domestic abusers, the continued slowwalking of Trump's documents case, Armenia's recognition of Palestinian statehood, Israel's handing of West Bank authority over to settlers, the charges against Pro-Palestine Columbia protesters, the ADL's falling legitimacy, Trump-Biden polling, the Saudi role in 9/11, climate change activism, and authoritarian alliances, before tackling the GOP's odd framing tactic for the first presidential debate. Next, she parses through some recent polling out of Emerson showing Biden behind in every swing state – even where Democrats are dominating the polling in other races – Louisiana's recent legislation mandating the Ten Commandments be displayed in schools, and Michigan residents' ongoing fight against the removal of in-person visitation for inmates. After diving into the developing story around Israel's continued empowerment of violent settler factions in the West Bank, Emma is joined by Matt Lieb as he touches on the definition of “Hasbara” (Israeli propaganda), and his relationship to zionist indoctrination. Lieb walks through the story of his birthright trip, the hypocrisy of Israel's claim to Jewish safety, and the absurd lengths that Zionists will go to with their Hasbara. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches Rep. Dean Phillips' painful response to “do Palestinian lives not matter?”, and explores what people think Israel's motives are (and what Israel willfully admits it is), before unpacking Dave Rubin's foray into sports as a part of the “Caitlin Clark is a victim of anti-white racism” bandwagon, plus, your IMs! Shea Bradley Farrell, President of Counterpoint Institute for Policy, Research, and Education joins Jacki to of Last Warning to the West: Hungary's Triumph over Communism and the Woke Agenda. Hungary has survived the invasion of the Mongols, conquest by the Ottomans, and soul-wrenching occupations by Nazis and Communists. Now, the country is resisting authoritarian diktats from the E. U. Despite centuries of struggle, the country is resurrected from the ashes and arguably the most free in Europe. How did this happen? What did Hungary do right and what can we learn from their fight against totalitarianism?

Yes, Republican Christians really want a theocracy.
MAGA Republicans are trying to create a new theocracy and we'll prove it by talking about climate change and Biden's falling popularity. Because that's how leftist puff pieces work. It's springtime for fascists in Israel as the secular war criminals are being replaced by an alliance of the far-right, with religious extremists and organizers of racist mob violence. The head of America's Union for Reform Judaism called the appointment of Itamar Ben Gvir as public security minister akin to “appointing David Duke, one of the heads of the KKK, as attorney general.” To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek was joined by Ali Abunimah, director of The Electronic Intifada and author of “The Battle for Justice In Palestine.”Follow Ali on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AliAbunimah?s=20&t=ioocS-46SPCvVtScMCkY1Q Follow The Electronic Intifada on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/electronicintifada
The day is here, and this is possibly the most I have ever researched for any one episode. We continue from Pt. 1 on the secret society known as The Parushim which included two Supreme Court Justices, & then get into some bizarre teachings about a Holy Serpent. Then, we take a step deeper into the early push for the modern state looking directly at quotes from leaders in the movement. From there, we get into events that took place at the beginning of its establishment, & still, we've only skimmed the surface. Just wait for Pt. 3! Now, time to get down that hot, sandy rabbit hole, far beyond the mainstream! Cheers, and Blessings The Odd Man Out Show Notes• The Parushim «KALLEN invited no one to become a member until the candidate had given specific assurances regarding devotion and resolution to the Zionist cause, and each initiate had to undergo a rigorous analysis of his qualifications, loyalty, and willingness to take orders from the Order's Executive Council.» — Schmidt, Horace M. Kallen: Prophet of American Zionism (Brooklyn, NY: Carlson, 1995), 77. BRANDEIS assumed the active leadership of the Provisional Executive Committee and HORACE KALLEN invited him to become an honorary member of the Parushim. Mashiach himself is referred to as "the holy snake," as alluded to by the phenomenon that the numerical value of Mashiach (358) is the same as that of the word for "snake" (nachash). In the Zohar it is told that when the holy snake, Mashiach, will kill the evil snake (overcome the fear of insanity), he will thereby merit to marry the Divine princess, to unite with the origin of the souls of Israel and so to bring redemption to the world." The Hidden History of Zionism (Book) https://archive.org/details/hiddenhistory_zionism “If I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been Anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see but one thing: we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?” David Ben-Gurion (the first Israeli Prime Minister): Quoted by Nahum Goldmann in Le Paraddoxe Juif (The Jewish Paradox), pp121. "Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you, because these geography books no longer exist; not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahalal arose in the place of Mahalul, Gevat - in the place of Jibta, Sarid - in the place of Haneifs and Kefar Yehoshua - in the place of Tell Shaman. There is not one place built in this country that did not have a former Arab population." ~ Moshe Dayan, Israeli Defense Minister “Between ourselves it must be clear that there is no room for both peoples together in this country. We shall not achieve our goal if the Arabs are in this small country. There is no other way than to transfer the Arabs from here to neighboring countries – all of them. Not one village, not one tribe should be left.” Joseph Weitz, head of the Jewish Agency's Colonization Department in 1940. Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, however, Sam and Emma dive into the Indiana AG's investigation into the 10 y/o rape victim's doctor, the Secret Service deleting texts from 1/6, Starbucks Workers United's new series of complaints to the NLRB, and Joe Biden's arrival in Saudi Arabia, before diving deeper into the response from GOP Leadership in Ohio and Indiana (and nationally) to immediately question the story of a 10 y/o's rape, despite its common occurrence in Ohio, before shifting to a “well it's not really an abortion if it's a child” talking point in the wake of the story's confirmation. Then, they're joined by Ryan Grim as they dive into Eric Swalwell's questioning of Catherine Glenn Foster, CEO and President of Americans United for Life, comparing the right's rhetoric to that of the Salem Witch trials (whose legal authors happened to have been cited by Justice Alito) in how they define concepts in a way that determines their outcome (if it's legal it's not abortion, if it's illegal it is), looking back to Todd Akin's statements on “legitimate rape” and the immediate backlash he faced in comparison to today's embrace of fundamentalism. Expanding on this, they take on the tactic of fear-mongering with medical professionals, as seen in the attacks on the 10 y/o's abortion provider, and how they seek to pretend some reproductive care is legitimate while clearly attempting to eradicate any access to such care, then shifting the conversation to the role of the US media and how ill-fitted it is to respond to this moment, from the Washington Post's Glenn Kessler's legitimization of the right's attempts to undermine this story (even though children under 15 receive abortions about once per week in Ohio) to the greater issue of media having no actual access to emerging stories – especially when potential sources are under intense legal pressure to stay silent. Next, they dive into state-level fights to preserve abortion, including Kansas' attempt to latch on to the “medical freedom” talking point, despite its role in undermining trust in medical care, and look at how this evangelical fundamentalism will continue to target social groups they want to police. Wrapping up the interview they tackle the Democrats' inability to take responsibility for Manchin and Sinema, both in terms of getting them on board with the party and disciplining them for their departures, and set up what to expect for the upcoming midterm election. The great Matthew Film Guy then joins as he discusses his discovery of the niche early 2000s indie production “Mean Girls,” discusses his ever-burgeoning film projects, and dives into the work of Hou Hsiao-hsien. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration's response to Roe being overturned, the importance of Janeane Garofalo, and the threats against Pramila Jayapal that seem to fly under the media's radar. Tim Pool doesn't believe the pregnant 10-year-old was raped, Sam and Emma tackle the lie of the “last liberal,” Ben Shapiro's pretend ignorance of his stochastic terrorism having a genuine impact on the well-being of trans people, and Snooki becomes a central endorsement in the PA Gov race. Hey there friends and weirdos! We're back, and we've got an extra-intense episode about a book called War In Heaven, written by the New Age spiritualist Kyle Griffith. Okay...so this book is kind of hard to summarize, but luckily Nile put in the work to make it as succinct as possible. What happens after we die? What is an "astral soul"? Who are the enigmatic entities known as the Theocrats and what do they want with us? Ask the Invisible College! Don't worry, it'll all make sense very soon.

That started in Episode 297 and continued in episodes 298 and 299. The Russian Orthodox Church's history in Russia is long and it's history in the United States is convoluted. Why? Empire, revolution, and immigration. The end result is the various Russian churches within the US. Orthodox Church in America The oldest is the Orthodox Church in America which got its start when a priest was sent to Kodiak Island where a Russian colony was being established in what was then Russian Alaska in 1794. Part of why the priest was sent was because there were already Russian Orthodox Christians among the Alaskan Natives in the Aleutian islands, having been converted during trade contact with Siberian fur traders. By 1796 one of the priests was consecrated a Bishop and just two years later he returned to Russia to report to the Imperial authorities about how the natives were being treated in the colony. He died during his return and he was not replaced. In 1811 the episcopal see in Alaska was officially closed. In 1824 another priest was sent to Alaska and in 1840 he was made Bishop of Kamchatka, the Kurile and Aleutian Islands, taking the name Innocent. In 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire, which prompted the Diocese to be reorganized as the Aleutian Islands and Alaska and after a church was established in San Francisco and the episcopal see moved to San Francisco the diocese was renamed Aleutian Islands and America. Once they were in the continental United States the church quickly became multiethnic as other Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic immigrants joined with them. This all continued until the Bolsheviks took over in Russia. Many of the non-Russian churches joined with their own national churches, such as Greek churches moving to the Greek Orthodox Church of America and the Antiochian Orthodox churches that has been founded by a Syrian priest and under the support and funding of the Russian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Tikhon, who had previously been the Archbishop in the US, resisted the communist government. Before he was sent to prison he directed churches outside of Russia to become self governing until normal communication and relations could be restored. However, when communication was restored this group in the US refused to give up their self governance calling themselves the American Metropolia. Finally in 1970 they were able to patch things up with the Moscow Patriarchate which agreed to grant them Autocephaly, making them an independent Orthodox Church taking the name Orthodox Church in America. They are recognized by the Russian church and a few other Slavic churches, but not by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople who objects under the claim that the Russian Patriarch did not have the right because he under Soviet control. The Orthodox Church in America continues to this day and considering a possible merger with the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Diocese in the United States and they are part of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, which churches under the Russian Patriarchate have left as a result of the schism between Moscow and Constantinople over Ukraine. Most of the members of the OCA today are not ethnically Russian. Bob Costas blames a murder suicidal behavior of a football player on the gun. Huh? Then, Sean Faircloth talks about the Attack of the Theocrats! spirited.
Host: Chris Mooney A common goal of freethinkers, humanists, skeptics, and atheists is to preserve Thomas Jefferson's "wall of separation" between church and state. But we haven't always been successful in this area—help from the courts notwithstanding—or at beating back the steady advances of the religious right. How can we do better? Our guest this week has a new book on the topic, and just as important, a new way of thinking. His name is Sean Faircloth, the director of strategy and policy for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. Before that, Faircloth served five terms in the Maine Legislature and went on to serve as executive director for the Secular Coalition for America. He's author of the newly released book Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All and What to Do About It.
Sean Faircloth with "The Attack of the Theocrats!" a vigorous polemic in the culture war. Time to bring troops home from Afghanistan? Rioting over burned Korans. Then, the 911 call which acquitted Jay Rodney Lewis.
Swoopy pops in for a quick chat with Derek about what she has been doing, and some fun, new, ideas for Skepticality. Derek interviews Sean Faircloth about his new role at the Richard Dawkins Foundation For Reason and Science, USA branch and his new book, "Attack of the Theocrats!".
Sean's 10 point plan. Sean's book: Reviews: Shocking! Will keep you on the edge of your seat! Sean Faircloth is doing such important work. There's not a doubt in my mind that if he was (suddenly, inexplicably) zapped back in time to meet Thomas Jefferson, that the Founding Father would clap him on the shoulder and say ‘Thanks.'” –Adam Savage, MythBusters co-host and executive producer. “Faircloth paints a sobering picture, but fortunately, as anyone who has heard his speeches knows, he also has an inspiring and invigorating vision to offer. . . . Readers will finish the book exercised, energized, and eager to join Faircloth in a bold rediscovery of the secular dream of the European Enlightenment and America's enlightened Fathers.” – Richard Dawkins, from the foreword to Attack of the Theocrats! “I've devoted the last twenty years of my professional life to pointing out unscientific assertions that harm or swindle innocent people. It becomes particularly insidious when unsound reasoning is used to justify and apply unjust laws. This book describes this very real problem in American today, then offers a bold plan to do something about it.” –James Randi, Founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation “What does the erosion of America's noble separation of church and state the basis of the first secular government in the world have to do with your everyday life? In this lively and historically grounded survey of the way we live now, the author explains why the thirty-year-old assault on church-state separation affects all of us from children who are not getting a world-class education in science because of fundamentalist interference with the teaching of biology to soldiers subjected to evangelical proselytizing on military bases. Nothing could be more timely than this reminder that the founders left God out of the Constitution to provide citizens of every faith and no faith the freedom to act on their consciences. We ignore this historic liberty, the gift of America's founding generation, at our peril.” –Susan Jacoby, Author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism and The Age of American Unreason “Faircloth makes a compelling case for people everywhere to steadily reestablish Thomas Jefferson's fundamental idea and keep religions out of politics. Read this, and you'll become a Constitution thumper.” –Bill Nye the Science Guy

Sean Faircloth calls in to discuss his new book: Attack of the Theocrats.
There's a crazy Christian cult on the rise in the US and JHK believes Americans needs to watch out. The New Apostolic Reformation is a dangerous movement exerting its influence on the American political sphere during a time when this country is so fraught with problems that we are leaving ourselves vulnerable to being pushed around by crazy people like this, Kunstler says. The group -- which has connections to presidential candidates Rick Perry and Michele Bachman -- not only believes in literal devils but that certain American politicians are afflicted by these demons. More concerning is their belief in dominionism over all aspects of American culture, politics and business. The "apostles" claim to speak directly to God and feel they have a mission to convert all Jews to Christianity. Kunstler sees this group, and others like it, becoming more troublesome as The Long Emergency unfolds. He can imagine that the country may find itself in a new Civil War in the years ahead. During the conversation JHK also describes his experiences reporting on religious cults, his own thoughts on religion as an agnostic, and explains how the story of the New Apostolic Reformation may resemble some of the aspects in his fictional World Made By Hand novels.
Host: Chris Mooney This coming October, in Kabul, Afghanistan—on a date, and in a location, that remain undisclosed—there will be a rock concert that's billed as the world's "first stealth music festival." It will feature rock, heavy metal, and funk from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Iran. Why "stealth"? In some of these countries, music is equivalent to political and religious subversion. Which is precisely why those of us who care about liberal democracy and secularism need to also care, deeply indeed, about music—and ensuring it gets out. This week, Point of Inquiry spoke to an organizer of the Kabul event, as well as a longtime freethinker, and musician—Austin Dacey. He's head of the Impossible Music Sessions, which describes itself as featuring "the artists who cannot appear and the music that is banned in their homelands." The purpose of the organization is to bring together musicians, producers, and audiences across cultures, space, and genres to share musical expression-and, enlarge its political potential. Austin also happens to be a philosopher, author, and human rights activist. His books include The Secular Conscience and, due out next year, The Future of Blasphemy.
