The games were played in Montreal at Bell Centre and in Boston at TD Garden. Hosted by the National Hockey League (NHL) and featuring only NHL players, the 4 Nations Face-Off temporarily replaced the NHL's annual All-Star Game for 2025. In the tournament, teams representing Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States played each other in a round-robin format, followed by a one-game final between the two top-placed teams. Although each team's respective national ice hockey governing body selected the rosters, the tournament was primarily an NHL-only event, having no affiliation with the worldwide International Ice Hockey Federation.Canada won the tournament after defeating the United States 3–2 in overtime of the final. Reactions to the tournament from sports journalists were positive and the tournament was viewed as a welcome change from the All-Star Game format. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:19 UTC on Saturday, 22 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2025 4 Nations Face-Off on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Joey.

fWotD Episode 2826: Dominik Hašek Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 29 January 2025 is Dominik Hašek.Dominik Hašek (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdomɪnɪk ˈɦaʃɛk], ; born January 29, 1965) is a Czech former ice hockey goaltender who mostly played for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). Widely regarded as one of the best goaltenders of all time, Hašek also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators in his 16-season National Hockey League (NHL) career before finishing his career in Europe. While in Buffalo, he became one of the league's finest goaltenders, earning him the nickname "The Dominator". His strong play has been credited with establishing European goaltenders in a league previously dominated by North Americans. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, both with the Red Wings, winning his first one as the starting goaltender, and his second one as the backup goaltender.Hašek was one of the league's most successful goaltenders of the 1990s and early 2000s. From 1993 to 2001, he won six Vezina Trophies, the most under the award's current system of voting for the best individual goaltender. In 1998 he won his second consecutive Hart Memorial Trophy, becoming the first goaltender to win the award multiple times. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, he led the Czech national ice hockey team to its first and only Olympic gold medal. The feat made him a popular figure in his home country and prompted hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to call him "the best player in the game". While with the Red Wings in 2002, Hašek became the first European-trained starting goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. In the process, he set a record for shutouts in a postseason year.Hašek was considered an unorthodox goaltender, with a distinct style that labeled him a "flopper". He was best known for his concentration, foot speed, flexibility, and unconventional saves, such as covering the puck with his blocker rather than his trapper. Hašek holds the highest career save percentage of all time (0.9223) and is seventh in goals against average (first in the modern era) (2.202), and the third-highest single-season save percentage (0.9366 in 1998–99). The record was broken by Tim Thomas in the 2010–11 season and again in the 2011–12 season by Brian Elliott, who now holds the record at .940. Hašek is the only goalie to face the most shots per 60 minutes and have the highest save percentage in one season. He did it twice while with the Sabres (1996 and 1998).At the time of his retirement, he was the oldest active goaltender in the NHL at 43, and the second-oldest active player in the league after Red Wings teammate Chris Chelios, who was 46. Hašek announced his retirement on June 9, 2008, but on April 21, 2009, he announced a comeback to professional hockey and signed a contract with HC Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga. On June 7, 2010, he signed with Spartak Moscow of the KHL and played the last season of his career with this team. Hašek announced his retirement on October 9, 2012. Hašek was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 17, 2014. He is also a member of the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. His number was retired by the Buffalo Sabres (2015) and HC Pardubice (2013). In 2017, he was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Dominik Hašek on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

Built to Fail: The Inside Story of Blockbuster's Inevitable Bust w/ Alan Payne AZ TRT Flashback - S05 EP33 (249) 8-28-2024   What We Learned This Week: ·         Blockbuster started in 1985, and scaled quickly after Wayne Huizenga purchased it in 1987, 10,000 stores at its height, dominant video rental co. ·         Alan Payne instituted the Video Rental model of HEB to the Blockbuster franchises he ran – segmented movies to rent new ones for more ·         Wayne Huizenga was a stellar Founder who built 3 fortune 500 companies – Waste Mgmt, Blockbuster, and Auto Nation ·         Viacom purchased Blockbuster in 1994 for $8.4 billion, and went on to lose 75% of the value over the next decade + ·         Competition was fierce from Hollywood Video, Redbox and then in 1997 by a new DVD rental by mail company called Netflix ·         Netflix scaled into the internet company it always wanted to be with streaming in 2009   Guest: Alan Payne Alan Payne spent thirty-one years in the movie rental business, the last twenty-five of those as a Blockbuster retail franchisee. He took over a small group of Blockbuster stores in 1993 and grew it into one of the largest and most successful chains in the company. He finally closed his last store in 2018, more than eight years after Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy. Book: Built to Fail: The Inside Story of Blockbuster's Inevitable Bust     From the Back Cover Blockbuster was phenomenally successful in its early years and made thousands rich beyond their wildest dreams. But it was consistently outsmarted and outmanaged by smaller companies. And the challenges began earlier than you think--long before Netflix was even an idea in the minds of founders Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. Blockbuster became one of the most iconic brands in the history of American business, but it cracked at the first sign of a challenge. From its founding, Blockbuster was a company built to fail. Link: HERE     Alan Payne Bio:   Border Entertainment, LLC - 2000 to 2018 Founded a $34.2M franchise group with 41 independently owned Blockbuster stores. President & Chief Executive Officer Held complete P&L responsibility while managing executive team (CFO, VP of Product Management, VP and GM Alaska Division, VP and GM El Paso Division, VP and GM South Texas Division) with 750 employees. ·         Grew revenue to $34.2M with 41 stores located in Texas and Alaska. ·         Capitalized business with $14M debt and $3M in private equity investment. Investors received over 35% internal rate of return. Fully retired debt in 2012. ·         Grew sales 140% and profitability 190% during industry decline from 2000 to 2007. Expanded through same store sales increases, new store openings, relocations, and acquisitions. ·         Created proprietary management systems by gathering and analyzing data around financial and inventory performance. ·         Developed and implemented an aggressive real estate strategy, identifying heavily trafficked, high-volume locations. ·         Cultivated culture of loyalty, retaining employees during wind down.     Alan Full Bio: HERE       Blockbuster Video[5] was an American video rental store chain. It was founded by David Cook in 1985 as a stand-alone mom-and-pop home video rental shop, but later grew into a national store chain featuring video game rentals, DVD-by-mail, streaming, video on demand, and cinema theater.[6] The company expanded internationally throughout the 1990s. At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster consisted of 9,094 stores and employed approximately 84,300 people: 58,500 in the United States and 25,800 in other countries.   Blockbuster – c/o Wikipedia: HERE   Harry Wayne Huizenga Sr.[1] (/haɪˈzɛŋɡə/; December 29, 1937 – March 22, 2018) was an American businessman. He founded AutoNation and Waste Management Inc., and was the owner or co-owner of Blockbuster Video, the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL), the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins) of Major League Baseball (MLB).   Wayne Huizenga – c/o Wikipedia: HERE     Notes:   Seg 1   Blockbuster was the premier video rental company in the 1990s. To put it in perspective how big they were, they brought in more revenue than theater ticket sales.   To add to that, if a movie bombed in the theater, it could be saved by video rental. Also with the introduction of DVDs in the late 1990s, movie studios started doing direct to video movies that would be released in rental stores like Blockbuster.   Pre-Internet was a different era for retail sales. In the 1990s you had huge retail companies like Blockbuster for rental movies, Tower records for CDs and music, and Borders for books. In the 2000s with the rise of the Internet, these businesses were all under attack. Netflix was growing with streaming, iTunes add streaming music, and Amazon was out selling borders with book sales.   In the mid-1990s Blockbuster at its height was the dominant video rental store with 40% market share. Hollywood Video is their main competitor with 20% market share.   Per Alan, half the weekly rental business was done on Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 10 PM. Blockbuster on weekends was the place to be, where the community was literally gathering for family night in movie rentals. There were new releases that came out every week and this section of the store was usually the most popular.   With the introduction of the VCR circa 1985 the video rental business took off. There were tons of small mom and pop video rental stores. The business didn't really have to be run that well as the industry was exploding.   Prior to this it was very difficult to see old movies. You had to have seen them in the past in the theater or wait for Network TV to air them. There was no control and very limited choices.   With the onset of Blockbuster in 1985, the video industry became more organized and professional. Blockbuster also had 6000 movie titles to rent, and scaled fast, opening stores by the dozen+.   Cost for Blockbuster to buy a movie was $70 per movie. They needed to rent the movie 20 times just to break even.   Blockbuster stores count were 5500 stores in the US, 1000 were franchisees and then corporate owned 4500. Corporate stores were typically in the larger markets, while the franchises were in the mid and smaller markets.   Seg 2   Alan bio, in the 1980s straight out of school he went to work for HEB grocery, the second largest grocery company in Texas and privately held. It was a $25 billion company run by CEO Charles Burt   In 1986, with the rise of Blockbuster started with just 30 to 40 stores. In 1987 HEB grocery started in the video business using Blockbuster as a model. They would own single location stores that were about 5 to 7000 ft.² in size.   H-E-B eventually opened 35 stores and was beating Blockbuster in sales had to head in the markets in Texas like San Antonio for example. A few years later HEB sold out to Hollywood Video and Hollywood Video went public.   In 1993 Alan got into franchises of Blockbuster working with Prime Cable. The business was struggling as Prime was not a retail company. They had 8 stores in Alaska and 10 stores in El Paso, Texas. Alan instituted the H-E-B model and was able to turn the stores around.   Blockbuster Business Model - Blockbuster legitimized the video business, and made it more professional than the original mom and pop stores that were not run well. Wayne Huizenga had bought Blockbuster early on when it just had 20 stores and he grew it fast.   The formula was simple - all movies regardless of whether they were new or old or rented for three day at $3. The demand for new movies was huge. Blockbuster could've charged more renting new movies.   Alan used the H-E-B grocery video model that was developed. Rent movies by the day and charge more for new releases. Older movie you could charge a $1 a day and people could keep the movie for 3 to 5 days.   There was actually a lot of demand for older movies, and they were 15,000 movie titles of older movies in demand.     Seg 3 Wayne Huizenga is a great CEO and businessman. He was the only man to build three fortune 500 companies, Waste Management, Blockbuster, and Auto Nation. Auto Nation was run by CEO Mark Jackson, and is the premier car dealership.   Wayne admitted he was more interested in building the thing, not running things. He also went on to buy the Miami Dolphins in football in the 1990s, and start the Florida Marlins baseball franchise.   Blockbuster stores were well run, attractive, and demand was high. Their franchise colors of blue black background and yellow Blockbuster writing on the sign were easily visible. They also picked very good real estate locations for their stores.   In 1994, Wayne sold Blockbuster to Viacom for $8.4 billion. In just seven years, built valuation from 1987 to 1994 when built up the business for a return of hundreds of percent. He paid $15 million, and sold it for $8.4 billion.   Viacom rolled the business into its total corporate structure and six years later they spun it off at a $1.5 billion valuation in six years, they lost 75% of the value of the business, it was poorly run.   Viacom was a TV company with major networks like Nickelodeon run by Sumner Redstone. He wanted to get involved in the movie business and use the Blockbuster purchase eventually to get Paramont studios.   Blockbuster when purchased was cash flowing $1 billion a year, it was making lots of money.   Steve Berrard was named the CEO of Blockbuster after the Viacom purchase, and only lasted one year. Then Bill Fields was brought in as the second Viacom CEO of Blockbuster.   Fields had a Walmart background, so he was hired for his experience in retail. He had no clue though how to run the video business. He also lasted less than one year, and the cash flow was starting to go negative.     Seg 4   1997 the DVD was introduced and this would change the movie and rental business. DVDs were created to be sold direct to consumer. 1997 is also the year that Netflix started with their DVD rental business through the mail. In 1999, the video rental business peaked at $10 billion a year in revenues. Post 1999 thru 2006 sales were flat to small growth.   1997 Blockbuster got their 3rd CEO, John Antioco, who served as Blockbuster CEO from 1997 through 2007. He also had a retail background and marketing. He had been at Taco Bell briefly, and prior to that he spent 20 years at 7-Eleven.   7-Eleven is a huge retail store that's really about location and real estate. They sell gas soda beer and cigarettes. They are not known for being great in retail. One thing John did as the new blockbuster CEO which was good, he started to engage with the franchisees.   In the late 1990s you were starting to see technology in the Internet slowly affect new businesses. When Netflix was created they always intended to be an Internet company,  it just took them 10 years to get where they wanted to be.   John running Blockbuster that stable to slow growth. He doubled top line revenue and doubled the amount of stores blockbuster had but the profit margins went down. Had its height in the early 2000s blockbuster at 5500 US stores and 3 to 4000 stores outside the US.   Blockbuster at the typical business fix cost of rent labor and taxes, which were slowly increasing year after year. Gross margin is just the rental revenue minus the cost of the product.   The cost of the DVD product have been cut in half by the early 2000s. DVDs were made cheaper as the movie business was trying to sell direct to consumer, and kill the rental business if possible.   The rental business revenues started flattening out post 2005. Sell through business for DVDs from movie studios was increasing every year, and had tripled in just a few years in sales.   In theory, Blockbusters gross margin should've gone up but instead was declining. They had the Proto typical business math problem of high costs and not enough sales.   The Great Recession of 2008 was really the beginning of the end for Blockbuster. By 2010 blockbuster and filed bankruptcy. It was the end of an era of a very strong stable business at one point for video sales rental.     Seg 5 – Bonus   Netflix started in 1997, with a business model of DVD rental via the mail. Even though Netflix only had a small portion of market share, by 2004 blockbuster felt compelled to compete with Netflix on the video rental via sales but failed.   Netflix originally did not have their subscription model. That model was added a few years in, circa 2007. In 2010, Netflix started adjusting their business model and experimenting heavily with streaming. The streaming business model for Netflix really didn't take off until post 2010.   Netflix created their AI recommendation model. This taught their subscriber base how to enjoy titles. Netflix overall model was customer centric. If a customer liked comedy Netflix could recommend 10 more comedies to them.   Another thing the customers loved was Netflix would release the full season of the TV series at one time. This created the streaming binge watch phenomenon. By contrast Blockbuster had tons of customer data but never did anything with that data. In theory Blockbuster could've been Netflix, and at one point almost bought Netflix.   Netflix original niche was renting older movies with the recommendation model. Netflix also created the queue system. Netflix sent titles in a customer's queue of 20 movies and would control what movies the customer would get sent in the mail.   In 1998, Blockbuster had to start a revenue sharing of profits with movie studios and this really hurt gross margin in the video rental business. Unit volume sales were not stable as time went on. Overall top line volume sounds was inconsistent.   Blockbuster at one point tried the subscription model, but physically in stores. It failed for it did not work in an actual brick and mortar retail store. Blockbuster in the mid-2000s used gimmick solutions which never really addressed the fundamental problems that were happening.   Reed Hastings of Netflix offered to sell the company to Blockbuster in 2000 for $50 million. Netflix wanted to join forces. Reed Hastings goal from day one, was to be an Internet company. Blockbuster was not able to work out the deal, so it never materialized.   Reed Hastings of Netflix was a true founder and original. He had vision. Founders may not be the best operators all the time, but they must have vision. There are some founders though who not only have vision, but also can be an operator. Examples are Reed Hastings of Netflix, Steve Jobs of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg with Facebook.   Wayne Huizenga was a founder, but not an operator. You go from the founder mentality to the operator mentality, but this never materialized in the history of Blockbuster.   Overall, Blockbuster management never really understood the business they were in. They were in the customer business, but never really focused on the customer. This is how over the long term they were beat out by companies like Netflix, and even Amazon.   Peter Drucker (famous business consultant) would ask the important question: ‘What business are you in?' – to understand who your customers are, what they need, and how to market and sell to your customer   Postscript: Alan Payne closed his last blockbuster store in 2018, and then wrote the Built to Fail Blockbuster book. He does not know what his next endeavor is….         If you enjoyed this show, you may like:  BRT Marketing: HERE BRT Business: HERE    Investing Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Investing-Stocks-Bonds-Retirement     ‘Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT     Thanks for Listening. Google's acclaimed artificial intelligence chatbot, known as Gemini, has recently been criticized for generating historically and factually disputed images. These included depictions of a woman of Southeast Asian descent and an African man as popes, representations of black Vikings, female athletes in the National Hockey League (NHL), and 'multifaceted' portrayals of the Founding Fathers of America. The AI, widely appreciated for its caliber, ran into the controversy when it generated images that were factually incorrect following straightforward instructions like 'create an image of a pope'. Participants expected to receive images resembling any of the historical 266 popes, who have all been males of white ethnicity. However, Gemini's results countered expectations, showing instead a Southeast Asian woman and an African man garbed in the sacred attire of a pontiff. Google, the creator of Gemini, acknowledged that their image tool had not lived up to the standards expected of it. The company introduced Gemini's image generation tool a week ago, but it has since raised eyebrows with its unconventional image suggestions. For instance, during an interaction with The Post, when Gemini was tasked to 'make four representative images of a pope', the chatbot responded by picturing popes of various ethnicities and genders. This odd blend included an image of an individual wearing a hybrid of Native American and Catholic costumes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The initial sanctions relief was reportedly issued in July, months before the unprecedented massacre of 1,200 civilians in Israel by the Iran proxy terrorist group Hamas on October 7. That mass killing – in which Hamas slaughtered children as young as infants, extensively tortured victims and desecrated corpses on camera, and took about 250 hostages – has increased pressure on the Biden administration to end sanctions relief programs that unfreeze money for Iran, allowing the government to use the unfrozen funds on legitimate needs and freeing up other funding to share with terrorist organizations such as Hamas. According to the original report, the money represents payments made by the government of Iraq to Iran in exchange for electricity services. “The Trump administration first allowed Iraq to import electricity and gas from Iran, but only on the condition that the payments were kept in an escrow account in Baghdad,” the Free Beacon explained. “The Biden administration continued to issue that waiver, and then broadened it in July so that Iraq could move more than $10 billion outside the country, enabling Tehran to draw on the funds for its budget and humanitarian needs.” The Iranian site Tasnim is sanctioned by the U.S. government for its close ties to the Iranian Islamist dictatorship. It was founded by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization and a formal arm of the Iranian military, so it serves as an informal mouthpiece for the Iranian regime. The October 7 Hamas attack, which the terrorists branded the “al-Aqsa flood,” has renewed calls for the Biden administration to stop its policy of sanctions relief for Iran. Iran is the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism and pours hundreds of millions of dollars a year into jihadist organizations threatening Israel. According to the U.S. State Department, Hamas itself receives about $100 million a year from the Iranian government. The Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah, based in Lebanon and vocally threatening attacks on Israel regularly, receives about $700 million a year from Iran. Despite the overwhelming evidence of coordination between Iran and groups such as Hamas, according to the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD), the Biden administration has granted Iran over $50 billion in sanctions relief. A month before the Israel attacks, Biden approved an agreement that gifted Iran $6 billion in sanctions relief in a single spell. In exchange for the $6 billion, which had been frozen in South Korean banks and which Washington allowed to be transferred to Iran-friendly Qatar, Iran freed five Americans it had been holding hostage in its political prisons. In October, shortly after the Hamas attack, the Biden administration “temporarily” lifted all oil and gas sanctions on socialist Venezuela, in response to dictator Nicolás Maduro’s short-lived promise to allow a free and fair presidential election. Iran and Venezuela are close allies; Iran refines a significant percentage of its own crude in Venezuela and has helped Venezuela refurbish its dilapidated oil facilities. The two countries recently signed an agreement with the Syrian dictatorship to jointly build a new refining facility. https://www.foxnews.com/world/nepal-bans-tiktok-disrupting-social-harmony Nepal bans TikTok for 'disrupting social harmony' Nepal’s government decided to ban the popular social media app TikTok on Monday, saying it was disrupting "social harmony" in the country. The announcement was made following a Cabinet meeting. Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud said the app would be banned immediately. "The government has decided to ban TikTok as it was necessary to regulate the use of the social media platform that was disrupting social harmony, goodwill and flow of indecent materials," Saud said. He said that to make social media platforms accountable, the government has asked the companies to register and open a liaison office in Nepal, pay taxes and abide by the country's laws and regulations. It wasn't clear what triggered the ban or if TikTok had refused to comply with Nepal's requests. The company did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has faced scrutiny in a number of countries because of concerns that Beijing could use the app to harvest user data or advance its interests. Countries including the United States, Britain and New Zealand have banned the app on government phones despite TikTok repeatedly denying that it has ever shared data with the Chinese government and would not do so if asked. Nepal has banned all pornographic sites in 2018. https://thepostmillennial.com/oregon-voters-want-to-walk-back-legalization-of-hard-drugs?utm_campaign=64487#google_vignette Oregon voters want to walk-back legalization of hard drugs In 2020, voters in Oregon passed Measure 110, which decriminalized the possession of certain drugs in small quantities for personal use and shuffled revenue from cannabis taxes to resources aimed at helping addicts. Since it went into effect the following year, crime and substance use has not gone down as intended, and as a result, residents are calling for a reintroduction of criminal penalties for users. A poll conducted by DHM Research earlier this year revealed that more than 60 percent of Oregonians want to see the decriminalization aspect of Measure 110 repealed, though support for the use of cannabis taxes to fund treatment programs has maintained popularity. According to the poll, 51 percent of those surveyed said they believed Measure 110 has been bad for Oregon. Of those, 33 percent deemed it "very bad." Over 60 percent said drug addiction, homelessness, and crime had become worse in the time since it was adopted. Rural voters who identified as Republicans were more likely than their Democratic urban neighbors to believe that the policy has had a negative impact on the state, though a sizable proportion of every demographic said as much. The poll, conducted via online survey among 500 Oregon voters between April 24 and 30, also found that drug addiction and mental health were viewed as more likely root causes of homelessness than access to affordable housing. As the Wall Street Journal reports, law enforcement officers across the state have found that contrary to what was expected, doing away with the threat of jail time has not resulted in more addicts seeking help. Since 2021, while 6,000 tickets have been issued for drug possession, only 92 people have gotten in touch with the helpline to complete an assessment that would connect them with the necessary assistance. Those who fail to call are supposed to receive a $100 fine, however that is hardly ever enforced. Overdoses have also continued to rise, jumping 23 percent between May 2021-2022 and May 2022-2023 to 1,500 statewide. https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/14/sport/adam-johnson-police-arrest-spt-intl/index.html Man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter over death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson, police say A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson last month, South Yorkshire Police said in a statement on Tuesday. Johnson died after sustaining a cut to the neck while playing for the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers in England on October 28. A Sheffield coroner’s report found that the 29-year-old “sustained an incised wound to the neck caused by the skate of another player” and later died in hospital as a result of the injury. “Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances,” detective chief superintendent Becs Horsfall said in a police statement. “We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our enquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.” The police statement added that the man arrested remains in custody. Following Johnson’s death, which the Panthers described in a statement on October 29 as a “freak accident,” there has been increased focus on player safety in ice hockey, particularly on whether protective neck guards should be more widely worn. “Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world,” Horsfall said. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, Johnson started his professional career in the American Hockey League before progressing to the National Hockey League (NHL). He featured in 13 games over two years for the Pittsburgh Penguins and also played in Sweden and Germany before joining the Panthers for the 2023-24 season. In an online obituary, Johnson’s family remembered him as a “thoughtful, patient and genuinely authentic” person who “took pleasure in the small, everyday things.” Members of the ice hockey community across the world have paid tribute to the forward, including in the city of Nottingham, where fans have laid flowers outside the Motorpoint Arena. Police said on Tuesday that officers are supporting Johnson’s family while the investigation into his death remains ongoing.

I felt like, okay, George, you were strong enough to fight to play in the NHL. Now your fight is not over. You have to fight for others. So I'm fighting for animals, I'm fighting for women's rights. I'm fighting for.. gay rights… Any cause that I can help out, to me is as sensitive as the one that I was fighting when I was a kid.    -Georges LaraqueMy conversation with “NHL's Unlikeliest Tough Guy,” Georges Laraque, was a long time coming and I couldn't be more excited to share our conversation with you.George was on the final day of an 8-day water fast, something that he does every 6 months as a thorough cleanse to reboot his system, when we recorded and he was vibrating positive energy throughout the interview.Talk about rising and thriving…. That's George! The other word that comes to mind is resilient. In this fascinating discussion we covered…How and why George chose to pursue the “white man's sport” of hockey, even though it wasn't his favorite sport, and despite the racism he faced. How and why George transitioned to a vegan lifestyle even when he believed it could end his wildly successful career. What his current dietary habits entail. His approach to vegan advocacy and why he doesn't shy away from the word vegan, or identifying as vegan, like many other athletes who are afraid of being judged, or other influencers who think it will turn people off.His thoughts on the intersection of masculinity and veganism. How he ended up recording the voiceover for Earthlings in French. His transition away from his role and identity of a professional athlete, and what he attributes to his success and ability to thrive on every level. And so much more!Bio:Georges Laraque played 13 seasons for different National Hockey League (NHL) teams. He was known as “The Rock”, acting primarily as an enforcer on these teams. (which means that means he kicked a lot of butt you guys) His best-selling biography, The Story of The NHL's Unlikeliest Tough Guy is the story of a true humanitarian, an engaged citizen not only in his immediate community, but on the global stage as well. The son of Haitian immigrants, Georges is involved in many charities. An animal rights activist and conscientious environmentalist, Georges has been very active as a public speaker. He captivates and inspires his public by addressing current topics such as sports, motivation, racism, bullying, veganism, politics and charities.LET'S CONNECT!

Grab your clubs and join the fun!  Golf is a popular and widely played sport that involves using clubs to hit a small ball into a series of holes on a course with as few strokes as possible. It is often seen as a recreational activity, a competitive sport, and a social pastime enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. The game is usually played outdoors on a designated golf course, which can vary in size and layout. The basic objective of golf is to complete the course by navigating through 9 or 18 holes, depending on the course's design. Each hole typically has a tee box, fairway, rough, and a green with a flagstick and a hole. Golfers start from the tee box and aim to hit the ball towards the fairway, where the grass is shorter and the ideal landing area. From there, players take turns hitting the ball until it reaches the green, where they will putt the ball into the hole to finish the hole. The player with the fewest strokes at the end of the course wins the game. Golf is unique in that it is largely a self-regulated sport, with players adhering to an established set of rules and etiquette. The sport places a strong emphasis on honesty and fair play, as players are expected to keep track of their own scores and adhere to the rules of the game.Golfers typically use a variety of clubs to suit different situations on the course. These clubs include drivers (used for long-distance tee shots), irons (used for various distances and precision shots), wedges (used for short-distance shots and getting out of tricky situations), and putters (used on the green for accurate putting strokes).Golf has a rich history, dating back to the 15th century in Scotland. It has evolved over the years and gained immense popularity worldwide, with professional tours, major championships, and amateur competitions attracting millions of fans and participants. Some of the most prestigious golf tournaments include The Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship (British Open), and the PGA Championship. The sport of golf also promotes physical fitness, as players often walk long distances across the course during a round. Additionally, golf provides an opportunity for social interaction and networking, as many business deals and friendships are formed on the golf course.Overall, golf is a game that combines skill, strategy, and mental focus, making it both challenging and rewarding for those who take part in it. Whether played competitively or for leisure, golf continues to be a beloved sport embraced by people around the world. Hockey is a fast-paced and thrilling team sport played on ice, popular in many parts of the world. It is played by two teams, each consisting of six players: five skaters (comprising forwards and defensemen) and one goaltender. The objective of the game is to score goals by shooting a puck into the opposing team's net using sticks. Here are some key aspects of hockey:The Ice Rink: Hockey is played on a rectangular ice rink with specific dimensions, enclosed by boards to keep the puck in play. The rink is divided into three zones: the defensive zone, the neutral zone, and the offensive zone.Equipment: Players wear specialized protective gear, including helmets, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, shin guards, and skates. Goaltenders wear additional protective equipment, such as a mask, chest protector, leg pads, and a catching glove.Puck and Sticks: The game revolves around a hard, black rubber disc called a puck. Players use hockey sticks to control and shoot the puck. The sticks have a curved blade at one end to aid in puck handling and shooting.Gameplay: Teams try to score by shooting the puck into the opposing team's net, defended by the goaltender. Players pass the puck to teammates, skate with it, and engage in physical play to gain control and maintain possession.Offside and Icing: Hockey has specific rules to prevent players from gaining an unfair advantage. Offside occurs when an attacking player enters the offensive zone before the puck, and icing is called when a team shoots the puck from behind the center line and it crosses the opposing team's goal line untouched.Penalties: When players commit infractions, they serve time in the penalty box, resulting in their team playing shorthanded. Penalties range from two minutes to major penalties that can last five minutes or more.Periods: A standard hockey game consists of three periods, each lasting 20 minutes. In case of a tie, the game may go to overtime or a shootout to determine the winner.Professional Leagues: Ice hockey has several professional leagues worldwide, including the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America, which is considered the premier hockey league.International Competitions: Hockey is also a popular sport in international competitions, such as the Winter Olympics and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship.Cultural Significance: Hockey has deep cultural significance in many countries, especially in Canada, where it is the national winter sport. It also holds immense popularity in countries like the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and many others.Hockey is known for its speed, physicality, and excitement, captivating fans with its action-packed gameplay and passionate fanbase. Whether played professionally, at the amateur level, or just for fun on frozen ponds, hockey remains a beloved sport with a rich history and a bright future.  Putting is one of the most crucial aspects of golf and can significantly impact your overall score on the course. It refers to the act of rolling the ball along the green and into the hole using a putter, the shortest and most specialized club in a golfer's bag. Mastering putting requires a combination of technique, touch, and mental focus. Here are some key elements to help you improve your putting skills:Grip: The first step is to grip the putter correctly. There are various grip styles, but two common ones are the "conventional" grip (where the hands are placed one above the other) and the "cross-handed" or "left-hand low" grip (where the left hand is below the right for right-handed players). Experiment with different grips to find what feels comfortable and helps you control the putter face effectively.Stance and Alignment: Set up with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes slightly flared outward. Position the golf ball in the center or just forward of center in your stance. Align your body and putter face squarely to the target line, which is the imaginary line from the ball to the hole.Eye Position: Ideally, your eyes should be directly over the ball or slightly inside the target line. This position allows you to see the line more accurately and helps with better alignment.Putting Stroke: The putting stroke should be smooth and pendulum-like. Use your shoulders to rock the putter back and through, while keeping your wrists firm and reducing excessive hand movement. The length of the backswing and follow-through should be relatively equal.Reading the Green: Before making your stroke, assess the slope and contour of the green to determine the break (the direction in which the ball will curve). Look for subtle changes in the grass, shadows, and any slopes that may affect the roll of the ball.Speed Control: Distance control is vital in putting. Practice hitting putts with varying speeds to get a feel for how the ball rolls on different greens. The goal is to have the ball travel at the right speed to reach the hole but not roll too far past it if it misses.Visualization: As you address the ball, visualize the line you want the ball to take and the ball dropping into the hole. Visualization can help improve focus and increase your chances of sinking the putt.Practice: Like any skill in golf, putting requires practice. Spend time on the practice green working on your stroke, alignment, and distance control. Use various putting drills to challenge yourself and simulate on-course situations.Stay Calm and Confident: Putting can be mentally challenging, especially under pressure. Stay calm, trust your technique, and maintain confidence in your ability. Avoid rushing your stroke and maintain a steady tempo.Learn from Others: Watch professional golfers putt and observe their techniques. You can pick up valuable tips and insights by observing the putting routines of skilled players.Remember that putting is a skill that takes time to develop and refine. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to improving. With consistent practice and a positive mindset, you can become a more proficient putter and lower your scores on the golf course.  ——————————Title Dude, there's a dart in your neck Tags Sports, golf, Hockey, Gambling, PGA, Golf Podcast, Comedy, Satire, Tessa Fowler, Baseball, MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL, Travel, advice, Utah, Park City, Major Golf, Marvel, Food, eating, tiger, Swing tips, golf swing, Mexican sun hat

While appearing on The Rich Zeoli Show earlier this week, John Yoo— the Emanuel S. Heller Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley & a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University—argued that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg does not have the authority to enforce federal criminal law. Yoo writes: “It is not even clear that Bragg could prove that the payment had anything to do with the campaign, as Trump could claim that he would have paid the hush money anyway to spare his wife and family from humiliation… Building Trump's prosecution on federal campaign law would breach a central principle of the Constitution's separation of powers… In the Trump case, Bragg would be interpreting and prosecuting a violation of federal campaign laws. In this, he would be acting contrary to the settled view of the U.S. Justice Department, which conducted its own probe and chose not to bring a prosecution.” You can read Yoo's full editorial, “Bragg's Case against Trump Has a U.S. Constitution Problem”, here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2023/03/braggs-case-against-trump-has-a-u-s-constitution-problem/ 6:20pm- Speaking with Sean Hannity on Fox News last week, Robert J. A big fan of marketing, psychology, and sport, Eric combined all three and began reaching out to his contacts to discuss how they could attack the mental health epidemic strategically and differently than had ever been done before. He had to bring purpose to his own experience and believed he must have gone through that horrific period for a reason. With suicides at a 30-year high, and drug/opioid abuse out of control, he knows something major must change with the messaging if we're to reverse these negative trends. He was overwhelmed by the positive responses he received from athletes, celebrities, and practitioners all over the globe, wanting to join in, all of whom bought into his vision of bringing a louder voice to this cause through a Global Alliance under a singular, bold but inclusive brand message: #SameHere (mental health lives on a continuum and we are ALL impacted…we ALL have a story). The charter Celebrity Alliance launched with a formal rally with over 300 supporters in attendance on November 14th, 2017, in New York City. There, The Alliance introduced their “#SameHere” Movement, uniting the world through one ASL sign language hand gesture (you see depicted in their logos and profile pictures) that communicates – no matter where we live, or what our background or our accolades, we all go through life's inevitable challenges, and we should have a society where it is openly acceptable to talk about those challenges, thus: “#SameHere!” Video. Find out more about the origin story that led to The Alliance's usage of #SameHere.
