//The Wire//2300Z May 1, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: UKRAINE SIGNS MINERAL DEAL WITH USA. NSA MIKE WALZ AND DEPUTY FIRED.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-Europe: Yesterday afternoon the White House announced that the United States and Ukraine have signed the previously mentioned mineral deal. -HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This morning National Security Advisor Mike Walz and Deputy advisor Alex Wong have resigned from their positions for their roles in the recent scandal involving the editor of The Atlantic being added to a secret group chat on Signal. This afternoon, President Trump announced that Mike Walz is to become the US Ambassador to the United Nations.AC: No word yet on who will be Walz's replacement though Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has been speculated to be in the running for the role by various commentators.USA: Around the nation, various May Day protests and demonstrations were carried out in most major US cities, with varying levels of turnout. Continuing tradition, the largest demonstration was conducted on the National Mall, with thousands of protesters engaging in the traditionally anti-Capitalist protest actions customary of the holiday.AC: Most of these protests remained relatively docile (by historical comparison), though in Europe several riots were reported (such as in Paris, again continuing tradition). In the United States however, turnout was rather low compared to years past. A few thousand people rallied on the National Mall, and a few hundred/thousand showed up to hear Bernie Sanders speak in Vermont, but that was more or less the highlight of today's May Day events.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The details of the mineral deal signed by the USA and Ukraine have not been released. However, this is unlikely to matter much in the long run. The mineral deal was never really that much of a serious effort anyway, and was really just an attempt by the United States to financially recoup some of the heavy costs of funding this war. As such, the specific details of the deal probably don't matter as much as one might imagine; the United States will take what they can get, which will without question be less than what Ukraine has to offer. What's far more important is that this deal signals an end to the recent spat between Trump and Zelenskyy, which is a necessary first step towards a peace agreement being put on the table at some point.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

When critics hinted Maurice Prendergast was getting a little repetitive as he approached 50, he could've hung up his brushes. After all, he'd been pretty successful. Instead, he headed back to where it all began--Paris--and came away reinvigorated with “a new impulse,” as he called it. Today's episode takes us to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. We'll find out how an idea that started with Congress just before the Depression led to an official modern art museum on the National Mall! On this day, April 9, in 1939, Marian Anderson made history with a powerful concert at the Lincoln Memorial after being denied the chance to perform at Constitution Hall because of her race. The Daughters of the American Revolution had barred her, but former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt intervened—resigning from the group in protest and helping arrange the open-air performance. Anderson sang before a crowd of 75,000 people, while millions more listened by radio. The concert became a defining moment in civil rights history, showcasing Anderson's talent and resilience in the face of discrimination. Her voice echoed not only through the National Mall but also through the conscience of a nation struggling with segregation and injustice. Learn more about your ad choices. Gaza media office: 490 children killed by Israeli forces in 20 days Israeli forces have killed 490 Palestinian children in Gaza over the past 20 days, according to the media office in Gaza. Describing the attacks as “one of the most horrific crimes against humanity in modern times,” the office said Israel continues to carry out brutal massacres, with children being a primary target. The total number of Palestinians killed during this period has reached 1,350, highlighting the heavy toll of continued air strikes on Gaza's civilian population. Palestinian journalist burned alive as result of Israeli strikes in Khan Younis Israeli forces struck areas near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, causing casualties and drawing outrage after a journalist was burned alive in the attack. The strike targeted a tent set up for journalists near the hospital. Disturbing footage shows the journalist engulfed in flames as bystanders and rescue workers frantically tried to save him. The journalist has been identified as Ahmed Mansour, a father and reporter for Palestine Today. Mass protests erupt across US against Trump policies Mass protests erupted across major US cities as demonstrators rallied against President Donald Trump's divisive policies, marking the largest wave of opposition since his return to the White House. In Washington, D.C., thousands gathered on the National Mall, with many traveling from across the country to join the demonstrations. Dozens of speakers took the stage to denounce Trump's agenda and call for unified resistance. Russia claims capture of Basivka in Ukraine's Sumy region Russia announced that its forces have captured the village of Basivka in Ukraine's Sumy region, intensifying its offensive near the northeastern border. According to the Russian defence ministry, troops also struck Ukrainian positions at 12 other locations across the Sumy region, signaling a broader push in the area. Moscow further claimed to have defeated Ukrainian units in the Russian settlements of Gornal, Guevo, and Oleshnya, as fighting continues to escalate along the border. US stocks headed for another plunge amid Trump's global trade war Wall Street opened the week facing significant losses following the implementation of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on exports to the United States. The move has rattled markets and sparked concerns of a deeper global trade rift.
The first round of President Trump's tariffs went into effect today, with a ten percent baseline tariff applied to all imports, regardless of origin. This is compared to the current average tariff of about two and a half percent. The measure affects the approximately three trillion dollars in foreign goods the U.S. imports annually.Protests erupted across the U.S. today, with crowds rallying at the National Mall in D.C. and other locations against the Trump administration's actions. Organizers of the so-called “Hands Off!” rallies are demanding an end to billionaire influence, cuts to federal programs, and attacks on immigrants and other groups.Severe thunderstorms and relentless rain are triggering flooding across the U.S. this weekend, as areas already devastated by recent storms and tornadoes remain in the path of the current system. At least nine people have died in the storms since Wednesday.
Fences are going up, and frustration is boiling. The White House has surrounded itself with anti-scaling barricades ahead of Saturday's mass protests against President Donald Trump, expected to be the largest single-day demonstrations since he returned to power. Organized by handsoff2025.com, the movement has galvanized nearly 250,000 RSVPs across all 50 states with over 1,000 rallies planned in D.C. More than 10,000 demonstrators are expected to flood the National Mall. The group isn't holding back, accusing Trump, Elon Musk, and their billionaire allies of staging a hostile takeover of government, gutting Social Security, slashing Medicaid, firing federal workers, and handing the country over to the ultra-wealthy. Even the White House is taking notice — spring garden tours were abruptly rescheduled. The message is clear: protesters are done watching their rights, communities, and paychecks get steamrolled. On October 12, 2024, tens of thousands of Christians gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., answering a call from charismatic activist Jenny Donnelly and pastor Lou Engle. The event, held on Yom Kippur, blended prayer political mobilization as speakers urged believers to take action ahead of the 2024 election. With banners reading #DontMessWithOurKids, the rally tapped into fears about gender and sexuality, echoing similar movements abroad. The results of the 2024 election suggest Donnelly's efforts were effective. With insight from journalists Alice Herman and Elle Hardy, Dr. Leah Payne asks: who is Jenny Donnelly? Crowds of Trump supporters in Washington were supposed to watch the inauguration on the National Mall. But when plans changed last-minute because of freezing temperatures, the president's fans crowded instead into indoor space at Capital One Arena and nearby bars. At the same time, Trump was getting sworn in at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, flanked by tech billionaires and members of his proposed Cabinet. On today's episode, host Martine Powers talks with chief correspondent Dan Balz about the unusual inauguration, Trump's plans for his presidency and what he's already doing to make them a reality.Today's show was produced by Laura Benshoff and Ted Muldoon, who also mixed the show. The inauguration of the 47th President of the United States is taking place in the historic Rotunda, reminiscent of Reagan's iconic ceremony. The political climate is tense, but the good guys have triumphed. The crisp January air is filled with anticipation as dignitaries, citizens, and global spectators gather to witness the peaceful transfer of power. The National Mall, adorned with flags representing the unity and diversity of the nation, stretches out before the Capitol, where the ceremony is taking place. As the President-elect takes the oath of office, the crowd erupts in applause, their cheers echoing through the historic landmarks of Washington, D.C. The new President's inaugural address is a powerful call for unity, resilience, and progress, resonating deeply with the audience. The speech highlights the importance of coming together as a nation to tackle the challenges ahead and to build a brighter future for all Americans. "Let's make America great again and do good business," the President declares, igniting a sense of hope and determination. The ceremony is marked by performances from renowned artists, whose music adds a layer of emotional depth to the proceedings. The sight of the President and Vice President, standing side by side, symbolizes a new era of leadership and collaboration. The event concludes with a grand parade, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the United States, and a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the night sky, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who witness it. This inauguration is not just a political event; it is a celebration of America, a reaffirmation of the nation's core values, and a beacon of hope for the future.
//The Wire//2000Z January 17, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: FIRE BREAKS OUT AT CALIFORNIA BATTERY FACILITY. INAUGURATION PLANS CONTINUE IN WASHINGTON D.C.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -HomeFront-California: A fire broke out at the Vistra Power Plant in Moss Landing overnight. So far the cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed, however the fire appears to have originated in one of the battery storage facilities at the plant. AC: The Vistra Power Plant is not a standard power plant, having been retrofit over the years to comply with California law. What began as a standard natural gas power generation facility, has increased to become what is claimed as being the largest Lithium-battery-based energy storage facility on Earth, storing roughly 750 megawatts of power. It is one of these annexes (one of the facilities housing exceptionally large battery banks) that the fire reportedly originated in. As such, this is not simply a fire at a natural gas plant, but rather a fire at a lithium battery storage facility. In Los Angeles, societal disorder continues as the recent wildfires have spread authorities thin. Yesterday afternoon, multiple assailants on dirt bikes carried out an hour-long joyriding spree in Los Angeles, interfering with traffic throughout the afternoon.Washington D.C. - Plans continue for the inauguration of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance on Monday. This morning, the plan was announced to move the swearing in ceremony indoors, to the Capitol rotunda, allegedly due to cold weather concerns.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: This is almost certainly not due to weather concerns. Considering the high-profile nature of the event, the multiple attempts on Trump's life (specifically due to sniper threats), and the difficulty of securing the National Mall in the wake of the various proficiency concerns present amongst the US Secret Service, this event moving indoors is almost certainly more of a security precaution than anything else. This is certainly not a bad idea, and quite helpful for the various counterterrorism agencies working the event. However, concealing these concerns when everyone can see the weather excuse is flimsy, is disingenuous at best.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

This week, Congress and President Biden officially approved a monument commemorating women's suffrage to go on the National Mall. There's limited space on the Mall, so adding a new memorial or site is actually pretty complicated. In 2022, we spoke to Philip Kennicott from The Washington Post about a vision for a bigger, better National Mall. Want some more DC news? Then make sure to sign up for our morning newsletter Hey DC. //The Wire//2300Z January 6, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CANADIAN PM TRUDEAU RESIGNS PENDING PARTY SELECTING NEW PRIME MINISTER.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events- Canada: This morning PM Justin Trudeau announced his resignation following many years of both general dissent regarding his totalitarian policies, as well as a declining confidence in his leadership. His resignation is pending the Liberal Party leadership choosing another candidate for the office of Prime Minister. -HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This afternoon, Donald Trump's electoral victory was certified in Congress, largely without much fanfare or political demonstration. Limited protests have taken place throughout the National Mall over the past few weeks (in opposition to Trump), however today's electoral certification passed largely without incident.Idaho: The individual arrested last week for allegedly planting an explosive device on a train in Payette County skipped his arraignment hearing on Friday. Brent Sharrai had been arrested after he allegedly attempted to detonate an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that he had affixed to a train halted in a siding on New Year's Day. AC: This attack appears to be more of a mental health incident rather than a deliberate terror attack, based on statements made by the individual's family which indicate the alleged attacker is not in full possession of his mental faculties.Mid-Atlantic U.S. - Over the weekend, a substantial winter weather system descended on the region, causing logistical problems due to icy conditions. Several states have declared emergencies due to the winter storm including: West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Arkansas, Missouri, and Virginia.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Following the news of PM Trudeau resigning, President Trump again took to social media to reiterate his intent to strengthen the United States' relationship with Canada to the point of possibly making Canada "the 51st State". These comments, which originally began as a joke, are beginning to approach some level of seriousness. Though the prospect of Canada becoming a U.S. State (or more accurately, a collection of U.S. States) is laughable at face value, Trump himself has repeated this idea many times now, so much that many people are beginning to wonder if he is actually being serious, much as with his previous statements indicating his desire to obtain Greenland.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
Summary In this episode of Startup Junkies, hosts Daniel Koonce, Jeff Amerine, and Harrison Kitson sit down with Anna Buckley, the dynamic founder of PICNiC. Balancing a full-time job and a burgeoning side hustle, Anna embodies the spirit of modern entrepreneurship. Based in Washington, D.C., by way of Arkansas, Anna brings innovative solutions to classic designs, filling gaps in the market and elevating everyday dining experiences. PICNiC, launched in March, was born from Anna's desire to create durable and aesthetically pleasing cabbageware—plates inspired by the timeless cabbage design but made from hard plastic melamine. The idea sprouted during a planned picnic on the D.C. National Mall. Frustrated by the lack of durable, non-ceramic cabbageware plates available, Anna saw an opportunity and seized it. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 2023 with a degree in finance, Anna moved to D.C. to start her career at Ernst & Young (EY) as a business consultant. Her entrepreneurial spirit, however, couldn't be contained. Leveraging her time management skills and type-A personality, she worked tirelessly after hours to bring PICNiC to life. By September, her products were ready, marking a significant milestone in her journey. Anna's entrepreneurial drive was evident even in college, where she interned at Startup Junkie and participated in the Student Activity and Curriculum Enhancement (S.A.K.E.) program. These experiences laid the foundation for her current success, providing her with invaluable insights and mentorship. As PICNiC grows, Anna envisions expanding her product line and engaging in more collaborations. Through her journey, she aims to inspire and mentor budding entrepreneurs, sharing her story to show that with passion and perseverance, one can indeed balance business and personal interests. At this festive time of year, when many people are bringing trees into their homes to decorate for the holidays, we are going back to our story of a pioneering scientist who made it her mission to ensure that plants traveling across borders did not carry any diseases. It was in 1909, that the Mayor of Tokyo sent a gift of 2,000 prized cherry trees to Washington, D.C. But the iconic blossoms enjoyed each spring along the Tidal Basin are not from those trees. That's because Flora Patterson, who was the Mycologist in Charge at the USDA, recognized the original saplings were infected, and the shipment was burned on the National Mall. In this episode, we explore Patterson's lasting impact on the field of mycology, starting with a blight that killed off the American chestnut trees, and how she helped make the USDA's National Fungus Collection the largest in the world.

By the start of 1933, thousands of banks across America had already closed their doors. 13 million Americans were unemployed and the stock market had crashed, leaving the United States in the worst economic crisis in modern history. In the twelve years that would follow, the Dust Bowl would ravage the plains and render former farmland useless, heightening the impacts of the depression as the Second World War brought the entire world to a standstill. But Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or FDR as many would come to know him, would take it all in stride. Born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882, he was elected to the New York Senate in 1910, would go on to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President Wilson, and finally as the Governor of New York before being elected President of the United States in 1932. Perhaps best known for his sweeping economic programs, a deep connection with the American people, and his incredible strength shown amidst personal disaster, he would guide the country through the turbulence with courage, resilience, and, above all else, optimism. In the heart of Washington D.C., a tribute to Roosevelt sits in a secluded corner of the National Mall. Designed by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin in 1974, the memorial stretches across 7.5 acres, making it the largest of any National Mall Memorial. The initial plans would wait for more than 20 years before Congress could approve the appropriate funding, but it was eventually dedicated on May 2, 1997, by President Bill Clinton. Consisting of more than 30,000 granite stones from South Dakota and Minnesota and with over 100,000 gallons of water flowing through seven fountains and pools, it is a stark contrast to the monuments that surround it, telling the story of an unprecedented presidency through elements of stone, water, and earth. This week on America's National Parks, take a stroll through the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the lasting legacy of the 32nd President of the United States. In 2010, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert held a satirical rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., called the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. This was amid the Tea Party movement. Political emotions were running high. And Stewart ended the rally with a speech slamming the media for stoking the country's divisions.“But we live now in hard times, not end times,” he said. “And we can have animus and not be enemies. But unfortunately, one of our main tools in delineating the two broke.” That rally has a Rosetta Stone quality to it now. Because what Stewart was describing has only gotten worse. Our divisions feel deeper and more dangerous. So as we enter election week, I wanted to have a conversation with Stewart about some of the arcs he has traced in American politics since he first hosted “The Daily Show” in 1999. We discuss how the media has become increasingly segmented and polarized in the past 25 years, how that has affected politics, how he understands Tucker Carlson's political transformation and whether his own politics have changed.Note: The Washington Post is one of several news organizations mentioned in this conversation. We taped this interview before the recent controversy at the Washington Post over ending its practice of presidential endorsements -- a decision made by the paper's owner, Jeff Bezos. This episode contains strong language.Book Recommendations:I Shouldn't Be Telling You This (But I'm Going to Anyway) by Chelsea DevantezThe works of Kurt Vonnegut (Breakfast of Champions, Player Piano, Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, etc.)Thoughts? In this 241st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss food, science, and myth. Research out of Tufts University three years ago created the Food Compass—a new guide to what is healthy that rivals the Food Pyramid for sheer lunacy. Advising us that Froot Loops and Pringles are healthier choices than meat and eggs, the authors of that research are now promoting ESG + Nutrition, in which their Food Compass informs governments and private enterprise on how to get the population of the world to follow along. Then: What is history, what is myth, and when is it appropriate to stop talking and be quiet already? Real figures from history—Jesus, King David, Churchill—are also mythic; to what degree do the myths verge from the reality, and what are the conditions under which we are obliged to care? Also mentioned: the Censorship Industrial Complex, Pathological Noble Liars, and Dumbledore's Army. Finally: a few words on the death of Paul Harrell, who advocated for the responsible use of firearms.*****Our sponsors:Sundays: Dog food so tasty and healthy, even husbands swear by it.
