Opportunity can come in many shapes and in unexpected places. Today's guest, Jeff Ash, PhD, chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md., tells a very compelling story about how he was given an opportunity that set the stage for his now-illustrious career. Having had a somewhat circuitous career path as a young academic, Dr. Ash describes how he was given a break because someone saw him as a whole person. Today, with more than 25 years of academia in the University of Maryland system under his belt, Dr. Ash walks the walk when it comes to his philosophy on fair, equitable opportunities and why he is often more impressed with a lower GPA than by a 4.0. His keen insights, wisdom, and guidance in conversation with Susan Ryan in this episode are especially timely and essential. Prioritizing people, no matter their race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or age, is a core tenet of the Center for Innovation as we create communities of belonging, where individuals are seen as whole people with intrinsic worth, and our shared humanity enables all to live, grow, and thrive.  Learn more about the CFI's upcoming conference in St. Louis this August: https://thegreenhouseproject.org/2025-conference/

After moving to Nashville in 2006, Buck joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls, releasing their self-titled album in 2007 and earning two Country Top 40 hit singles, “Last Train Running” and “Falling Into You.” Buck credits his Alabama roots and his many years of living in California for his soulful rock Cala-Bama sound. Kris commences his address "What (Do) We Stand For!?" at our Vespers Service at Shady Grove today with an anecdote that comes in the form of a criticism of Unitarians and Unitarianism: "You don't stand for anything!" Perhaps the criticism was from a person searching for the certainties of a creed and we are a Non-Credal church. But it's not that we are without beliefs, principles - certainties even! It's just that we are free to decide what those certainties are. Unitarianism is older than Trinitarianism, and today, Kris answers that criticism with What We Do Stand For. Australian Unitarians find themselves historically, philosophically and globally - midway between British Unitarianism and American Unitarian Universalism. Kris's address today considers where we've been as Unitarians, where we're at -now, and where we might be heading. We have some decisions to make!

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer Buck Johnson is the keyboardist and backing vocalist for the legendary rock band Aerosmith, the Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry), and The Joe Perry Project. Buck hails from the backroads of Shady Grove, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, where he grew up singing gospel throughout the South with his musical family. Since beginning his career, the soulful rock artist has amplified his musical talent by performing in churches, bars, festivals, and concert halls globally alongside icons like Aerosmith, Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper. As a songwriter, Buck co-wrote the international hit single for Carlos Santana, "Just Feel Better," for his 2005 album All That I Am, featuring Steven Tyler. After moving to Nashville in 2006, Buck joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls, releasing their self-titled album in 2007 and earning two Country Top 40 hit singles, "Last Train Running" and "Falling Into You." Buck credits his Alabama roots and his many years of living in California for his soulful rock Cala-Bama sound. Buck has also had numerous songs featured on television and in films as a songwriter, composer, producer, and performer, including the song "You Came Along" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus on vocals for the Lifetime movie Flying By, “Working Man” by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Extreme Makeover-Home Edition, and "Fast Talking Lover" by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Nashville. Continuing to expand his songwriting and musicianship, Buck produced and co-wrote Kaitlyn Kohler's single "I'm Not Crying," which recently went No. 1 at Texas Country radio. Buck has also recorded and/or toured with such notable acts as The Doobie Brothers (“Rockin' Down The Highway” live album), Tal Bachman (hit single “She's So High”), Jon McLaughlan (hit single “Beautiful Disaster”), John Waite, Chris Stills, Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), and more. He has also worked as a songwriting collaborator, session vocalist, and musician with songwriters and producers Jamie Houston (High School Musical, Carlos Santana), Charlie Midnight (The Doobie Brothers), and Bob Rock (Tal Bachman). Today on our program, we present the story of one of the most iconic American Folk songs, born from the lineage of 16th century ballads brought by immigrants from the British Isles, “Shady Grove”. Often used in both dance and courtship, the timeless melody was the backbone for countless ballads and folk songs that made their way into North America and took root in the Appalachian and Ozark Mountain ranges. To date, “Shady Grove” has been estimated to have amassed over 300 stanzas since it was first sung in the Cumberland Plateau region of Eastern Kentucky in the mid-nineteenth century. We are so often consumed by news of the horrors of war, that we despair of the darkness and we lose perspective! Kris commenced Sunday's address -"A festival of Light" at Shady Grove by telling a story from the Indian Upanishads. Our Unitarian Festival of Light is inspired today by the Diwali - the Hindu Festival of Lights. Light has long been a metaphor for that deeper part of ourselves - call it the soul...the spirit, some divine spark within ourselves - a light - "the lamp within" -emanating goodness and divinity. Today is our Unitarian celebration of the light and goodness, expressed in the day-to-day acts of kindness and empathy. So let's not dwell on the darkness but join with us by celebrating this light within and surrounding us. Our Diwali! Kris leaves us with a challenge: "How do you bear that light to the people around you?" He concludes: "Let us be the light in the darkness!"

In our church, notions of a traditional "Sunday School" have been re-defined. Today is our Unitarian recognition of our young peoples' "Coming of Age" - a celebration of  successfully passing through recent trials of endurance. Our young women successfully completed a 30 km hike along the Heysen Trail over two days and our young men canoed a long distances at West Lakes. Today, our "Sunday Club" young people gathered to tell us about the wisdoms they had learned from their camps at Shady Grove throughout the year and their hopes for the future. Kris's address to the young people commenced with a quote from Hamlet - Polonius's speech to Laertes "This above all: to thine own self be true..." ...being true to yourself. And we - older members - of our Church were also invited to hand-on some our wisdoms and insights that might help our young people in how they choose to shape their lives. We were also invited to stay for a lunch prepared by our young people.
