Why is meaningful discussion between people with different views so rare? I think this is an important and timely question, so I decided to unpack it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Of course I'm talking about episode duration and I guess we're about to find out if almost three hours is excessive, because that's how long it took us (Tiff, Melissa, Me) to reflect on eight years and two thousand episodes of The You Project. As objective as I can be (not very) about something I was in the middle of, I think this might be in our all-time top ten. I loved it and love all of you for supporting me, us and this for so long. Thanks. Harps. xxSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We set out to talk deadlifts and gym bro nonsense… but before I knew it, we’d skipped the weights entirely and started lifting something way heavier - the big questions of faith, spirituality, and existence itself. What began as banter turned into a deeply honest dive into Harps’ innermost thoughts on God... from religious upbringings to strange unexplainable moments, and the kind of conversation that rarely make it to the mic. I recently heard Tom Cruise (that great philosopher) say "I'm not afraid of being afraid." I know it's simplistic, but I love it. It really resonates with me. It's a statement, a lightbulb moment, and a piece of advice, wrapped in six words. I love the mindset that says "of course I'm scared, and that's totally fine." The idea that we can co-exist with our fear without being controlled by it. The idea that we can be both scared and courageous. The idea that fear is an unavoidable part of the human experience, not a weakness. This is a chat about that. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When and what, is enough? How do you personally define "enough," and why is it such a slippery concept for most people? What psychological or evolutionary forces push humans to constantly seek "more"? How does hedonic adaptation play into our perpetual dissatisfaction with achievements or possessions? In what ways do social media and comparison culture distort our sense of sufficiency? What are the most common warning signs that someone's drive has tipped into self-sabotage or burnout? How does tying self-worth to achievement affect relationships and emotional wellbeing? Such good questions and such a fresh and interesting chat with young Tiff. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Part of my life-long journey, has involved me trying to talk louder than my self-doubt and inner critic, overcoming my imposter syndrome, working through my fear, starting things even when I didn’t 'feel' ready (never ready), choosing the narrow path, reprogramming my mind, and working relentlessly to develop a level of confidence, in order to succeed. Of course, I'm well aware that l'm not the only one so for this episode, I thought I'd explore the idea of confidence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What or who, makes a good friend? Is it someone who says nice things behind your back? What are the attributes of healthy and unhealthy friendships? Does your friend always need to tell you what you want to hear? What if their honest feedback is something you don't want to hear? Should they hold back or speak up? And what about those 'friends' who vanish when you're no longer valuable to them? When you've reached your use-by date? And when does a relationship progress from someone 'you know' (via circumstance, situation or proximity), to a friendship built on trust, respect and love?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Want to get stronger, fitter, and stop faffing around aimlessly at the gym? Well, here's an ep on some of the more intermediate to advanced concepts around strength and conditioning with a little Q & A with Harps. We cover things like training volume, hypertrophy, the difference between strength and power rep ranges, and little sneaky tweaks like time under tension and pause reps that make your muscles hate you in the best way. We’ll walk you through free weights verses machines, how to use periodization to stop plateauing, why recovery is essential if you don’t want to burn out, what about cardio (yes, you still need it), how to test your one-rep max without wrecking yourself, and what it really takes to move past beginner level. So, if you're partial to a little training and would love to step it up a little, here's one for you! This was perhaps the deepest I've ever gone, and the most vulnerable l've ever been in twenty-plus years of broadcasting on radio, TV and of course, podcasts. It's not a sale's pitch for God or religion - so panic not - but it is a conversation that I believe asks and explores some really big questions, ideas, and issues. I think this will be some people's favourite episode, some will find it mildly interesting, and some will turn off five minutes in. Enjoy. Or don't.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dear Kate Weaver, hi (waving emoji), it's Harps from The You Project. So, last week I did an episode about exercise and you messaged me via our TYP Facebook page. You quite rightly pointed out that I typically aim those (training-type) episodes more towards beginners. With that in mind, you asked if I could record something for people with a few more miles on the training clock. That is, people who are more advanced. The answer is, f*ck yes and here it is. I hope you get something out of it... Best, Harps. *Note: If the rest of you want to listen, I guess Kate will be okay with that. Probably.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Harps, Noddy and Waughsie round up the final game of the season for the Swans.
For some of you who are reasonably advanced with your training, knowledge and results, this episode might not be for you. Having said that, I think there's something in here for anyone at any level - even if it's as a reminder, reinforcement or perhaps to consider something familiar through a different lens. The language is non-jargon-y, beginner-friendly and there's only a light smattering of f**ks. You're welcome.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
To what extent should we let Al 'think' for us? What are the myriad of ways we'll use it, in an attempt to make our lives easier? To do less work? Invest less energy? Use less brain power? And what might the potential ‘handing over of power, responsibility and work' do to our minds? Specifically, our cognitive function? Our resilience? Our mental and emotional health? Our memory? Our problem-solving skills? Our creativity? Personally, I don't think it's panic time, but it's definitely caution time. Awareness time. Kelly and I did a deep dive on this and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This episode is a kind-of coaching sesh that some will dig, and others, not-so-much. This type of content and thinking-out-loud is the sh*t that lights my fire. I have a different take on high performance to most. Not better or worse, just different. For me and many people I've worked with, it is a more practical, relatable and useful approach. But then it's my model, so of course I'd say that (lol). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's the week of the co-share, here at TYP. First it was the Andrew May experience, and now we open the Tiff Cook door, as Roll With The Punches and TYP collide in a symphony of information, education, philosophy, psychology, and story-telling, mixed with a liberal smattering of conversational bulls**t. Of course. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
You and I are creatures of habit, good and bad. We don't always do things because they 'work', we do them because we did them Yesterday. Last week. Month. Year. We do them because, we're sleepwalking through (parts of our) life. We do them because they're familiar, not effective. Because our parents did them, so now we do. We do them because they are habits we unconsciously adopted, not actions we consciously chose. And then one day, we find ourselves trapped in a psychological, emotional and behavioural operating system that keeps us in holding pattern of... blah. Not optimising our time, talent, creativity, intellect or genetic potential. This is a chat about waking up. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 2025, “science tells us” isn’t just a statement - it’s a sales pitch, a power play, and a psychological Jedi mind trick all rolled into one. People don’t say it to invite a conversation - they say it to end one. Not to explore complexity, but to shut it down. Not to illuminate truth, but to wear a lab coat of credibility while peddling ideology, influence, or overpriced wellness shakes. I love this topic, so I decided to riff on it for you. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Despite the title, I’m not even being inappropriate. For a change. This chat with Tiff was full of curious and tasty tid or titbits. In a brief but jam-packed thirty minutes, we covered vast conversational territory and touched on some important topics and ideas. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We like to think we're independent thinkers, making conscious choices and forming our own ideas. But what if you're more influenced than you realise? What if your beliefs, attitudes, and even your identity are being shaped - subtly and consistently - by the people you spend the most time with? Or at the very least, the people you pay attention to? There's that old saying: "You become the average of the five people you hang around with the most." It's not scientifically precise, but it's not bullsh*t either. In this episode, we explore how the company we keep shapes our thoughts, filters our reality, and maybe even rewires our brain. We talk influence, identity, thought cults, and the fine line between your truth and someone else's programming.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If I had a kid who was old enough to have a somewhat grown-up conversation, where I could share with them some things that I believe are important for everyone to know, that conversation would include (but not be limited to) the core ideas, concepts and principles that I share in this podcast. Some of us have been getting in our own way for years. Shooting ourselves in the metaphoric foot, undermining our own goals, sabotaging our dreams and quite often, being the biggest barrier to our own success. In this broadly-relevant episode, I unpack ten common forms of self-sabotage and some potential remedies. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the context of the average Aussie life expectancy for a bloke being 81.1 years and me being 62 in September, statistically I'm on the home straight. If I'm 'typical', I'm 75% cooked. And knowing that the last few years for most people aren't exactly... awesome, it's probably time that I at least think about what I want the rest of my ‘life experience' to be, and how I might make that happen. This chat with Tiff was a never-had-before conversation for this show. And BTW, it ain't as sad as it sounds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a weird, brief (but interesting) mini-pod. You might like it. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that walking on soft sand expends approximately 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy expenditure than walking at the same speed on a firm surface. In simple terms, 81kg me (Harps) walking for an hour on a hard surface at 5 kph would burn about 280 calories, compared with me doing the same thing on soft sand (same activity, same speed, same time, same body) and potentially, burning up to 756 calories (2.7X)! I get a little exercise geeky in this ep, but the idea (changing one variable) is also useful for a range of other non-exercise applications. EnjoySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Purpose. Do we have only one? Or maybe more? Does it change over time? Do we need to 'discover' our purpose under some mystical rock? Or perhaps it comes to us in a dream? Do we simply choose it, based on what matters to us? Like our values, beliefs and goals? Maybe it reveals itself to us with a subtle tap on the metaphoric shoulder? Or perhaps we have a significant experience or life event, and as a result, our purpose becomes clear? This episode is me (Harps), riffing on all of that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I think George Bernard Shaw was onto something when he declared "we don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." It's long been my opinion that many of us ‘get old before we need to' simply because we stop doing things which can help us maintain a level of physiological, psychological and cognitive function and performance 'younger' than our chronological age. In this episode, I share ten simple activities that require little or no skill, fitness, equipment or experience. Activities that, if done consistently (that's the all-important 'if'), can keep people more functional, healthy and independent for longer. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We could call this a podcast-ette. This brief episode is me riffing on the nature of intelligence; an idea that some people might find ironic and I wouldn't totally disagree with them. Nonetheless, I did it. And here it is. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"Go where you grow" - yep it's a cheesy saying but behind the cheese, it's a solid message. So many of us talk about personal growth, while simultaneously avoiding the 'places' where we might grow. Wanting growth, choosing comfort. Saying all the right things, doing bugger all. We love the idea of being objective. Open-minded. Willing to learn new things, unlearn old things, admit when we get things wrong and to look at 'old things' through a new lens or perhaps even, someone else's lens. Telling others how objective we are makes us feel good about ourselves. It's considered a noble trait and something that's socially desirable and who doesn't want that? But as Anaïs Nin told us over a hundred years ago. "you don't see things as they are, you see them as you are." So there's that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hey Team, hope you’re great! I’m being an awesome son for a day or two, so I thought we’d revisit this episode that I recorded a while back, which was really well received, and I think it might be timely for some at the moment. *Treading water. Spinning our metaphoric wheels. Stuck in a Groundhog Day of mediocrity, dissatisfaction and frustration. Wasted time, talent and energy. Thinking, habits, behaviours, rituals and fears that keep us trapped in a prison of our own making. This episode is a workshop (of sorts) about stepping up, breaking through and getting unstuck. In this ep I explore training with dodgy knees, backs and general old-person injuries and issues, being motivated but not disciplined, the potential danger of being too hyper-focused on analysing and re-inventing every aspect of our lives, how I maintain high (ish) intensity training while minimising risk, where to start when you're trying to get your sh** together with your food and lots more.
