I threw out the invitation, and in those questions came. Over the next few weeks, l'll record and post a few of these eps where l'm exploring different topics, ideas and questions sent in by you; our trusty and loyal TYP’ers. In this ep I explore training with dodgy knees, backs and general old-person injuries and issues, being motivated but not disciplined, the potential danger of being too hyper-focused on analysing and re-inventing every aspect of our lives, how I maintain high (ish) intensity training while minimising risk, where to start when you're trying to get your sh** together with your food and lots more. We sit more than ever. We move less than ever. And it's wrecking our health. In this episode, I unpack why sitting for eight-plus hours a day (with no movement) carries a death risk similar to smoking. From metabolic dysfunction to muscle atrophy, to brain fog to increased disease risk, we're paying the price for comfort. I share some facts, ask some hard questions, and offer simple, practical ways to reclaim your health... one movement at a time. Your body's not a chair accessory. Maybe it’s time to take a stand for your health - see what I did there? Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Apologies team, I’m away from the mic today (back tomorrow) but in the spirit of ‘a daily podcast’, I thought we’d revisit our all-time most popular, most listened to, and most shared podcast. For whatever reason, this message resonated powerfully with many people and we have never received more feedback about any episode. For some of you it will be a brand new listen and for some of you, it might be a refresher. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode is me thinking out-loud about success. The idea of it. The experience of it. The cultural story of it. The marketing and branding of it. What it is and isn't. Why some 'successful people' are miserable and some people that society would label poor are mentally, emotionally and experientially rich. Why we keep moving the goal posts. Why the idea of it (success) is rarely the experience of it. And lots more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well, this was one of those chats that takes a wild ride... from blind boxing bouts to the blind spots in how we see ourselves and others. We talk about the power of presence, the problem with performative self-help, what real resilience actually is, and why so many of us wait for a crisis to start living with purpose. We go deep on all things from burnout to boundaries, and why sitting on the fence is underrated, and the importance of actually having hard conversations instead of just venting to your mate and sweeping it all under the rug. What it means to be seen, how our emotions are valid but not always helpful, and how sometimes the 'healing' work is just finally being honest about what’s under the hood. Here's the conundrum... people want to be strong, resilient, capable, high-performing and successful but... at the same time, they want comfort. Convenience. Instant gratification. Reward without work. Success without pain. Don't believe me? Take a look at the ocean of 'magic pills' and quick-fixes on offer to help you and me bypass the discomfort, inconvenience and effort. It all sounds very sexy but I've never met anyone who has succeeded over the long term by being obsessed with comfort and convenience in the short term. If you don't want to be coached by me (around this topic) don't listen. If you do, giddy-up.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's a kind of knowing that doesn't come from books, degrees, research papers, TED Talks or even, good-old TYP. It's not downloaded from the internet. It's not something you can Google. You didn't 'learn it’ somewhere. It doesn't ask for permission. It doesn't speak in paragraphs. It whispers. Nudges. It tugs at your sleeve. And sometimes it punches you in the gut. It's not always logical, but it's often right. It's the insight, understanding, knowledge, awareness that you somehow have, without having a f***ing clue how or why you know it. This is a chat about that. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tricky. Complicated. Devastating. Healing. Painful. Joyful. Personal. Silly. Serious. Professional. Strategic. Selfless. Stagnant. Dynamic. Hi Team! Life at TYP central is mayhem at the moment, so we’re delving into the archives to share one of my favourite episodes with you. I will be back tomorrow with a freshie. See you then, Harps. *You wouldn’t think a conversation about trauma could be uplifting, entertaining and even fun, but this chat with Dr. Sarah Woodhouse (trauma expert, research psychologist, author and coach) is all that and more because not only is she a high level academic with a great understanding of the science, but she’s also endured her own trauma journey and come out the other side with amazing compassion, insight, energy and humour. Among other things, we discuss eating disorders, bullying and sexual abuse (all part of Sarah’s story), post-traumatic growth, the trauma spectrum (there’s a range), vicarious trauma, what trauma does to our body, healing and recovery, what causes a trauma response, the stress-anxiety-trauma relationship and why swearers are smarter than non-swearers (it’s science Bro). How's that 'perfection' thing working out for you? You know who you are. You know the frustration, anxiety, disappointment and pressure that comes with chronic perfectionism. It's crippling. It's a self-created psychological prison and it's more likely to lead to misery than it is, joy. Maybe 'better' (not best) is a healthier goal? Progress, not perfection? This episode is a chat about all that. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
People make goal setting harder than it needs to be. And while it's not always a metaphoric cake walk (especially when it comes to the 'doing' part of the change process), the actual strategising, planning, time-lining and prioritising (the theoretical component) can be a relatively straight forward and uncomplicated process. This episode is a brief coaching session for those of you who might need some help in getting a little more practical and strategic about the things you want to do, be, create, change and become. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hi Team, this episode I dive into something I think everyone should at least learn about (if not, practice): Stoicism. Not because it's trendy, or philosophical, or looks good on Insta but because it's practical, effective and bloody useful, even in 2025. Especially when life gets messy, unpredictable, or just plain difficult. I talk about what Stoicism actually is and isn't, where it came from, why it still matters today, and how you can use it in real life - not just as a theory, but as a legit toolkit for handling pressure, uncertainty, disappointment, and all the day-to-day chaos we face. This isn't about becoming emotionless or detached - it's about becoming more calm, intentional, and resilient. If you've ever struggled with overthinking, emotional reactivity, or the feeling that life's a bit out of your control, this one's for you. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this solo episode, I unpack the sneaky psychological pattern known as the 'hedonic treadmill' - the reason we feel amazing when we hit a goal, and kinda flat not long after. We discuss why we keep chasing the next shiny thing. Why our wins wear off so fast. Why happiness doesn't keep up with our progress. Why and how our brains adapt to both the good and the bad. Why contentment often feels just out of reach, and - most importantly - what we can actually do about it all. This episode is part neuroscience, part psychology, part philosophy, and part practical. If you've ever wondered why success can still feel unsatisfying, or how to find more meaning between the wins, this episode is for you. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
So much busy-ness, so little efficiency. Such a big investment of time, effort, energy and resources, such a poor return on that investment. So much potential, so little success. Ever had someone say "busy" when you ask them how they are? Me too. Ever had someone say "efficient". Me either. This is about that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Astronomers have just found a planet that might be perfect for human life! It's in the “Goldilocks zone,” meaning it's not too hot or too cold—just right for liquid water. Scientists believe this planet could have an atmosphere, oceans, and maybe even life already. It's way out in space, but with new technology, we might learn more about it soon. Imagine a future where humans could travel there and start a new home among the stars! For now, all we can do is keep exploring and dreaming about what's out there. Among other things, this episode is a chat about tricking your mind into believing something that isn't real, in order to create an outcome that is both amazing and real, with your body. The chat revolves around some fascinating research that was conducted over fifty years ago involving one significant lie, fifteen athletes, fake steroids (placebos), and some mind-blowing test results. I love this story. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Some people think I'm too blunt. Too direct. Too unsophisticated. Too bogan. Sometimes I agree with them. Some people resonate with my approach to personal development, human behaviour and the psychology of change and some don't. Of course. It's to be expected. And of course, I'm okay with that. I'm not trying to be all things to all people. In this brief solo episode, I chat about why I talk, write and teach the way I do. It's not a 'defence' but rather an insight into the rationale and reasoning behind my methodology.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is a follow on from yesterday's chat. Right now, it seems like we're in the middle of an internet avalanche of disempowering ideas, illogical concepts, pseudo-science, psycho-babble, misleading and magical thinking, masquerading as logic, science and research, and in this episode, I'm sharing some of my 'favourites' with you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The self-help industry promises transformation, happiness, and success through simple formulas, positive thinking, five-step plans and the occasional sunset, fluffy puppy and unicorn. Yet beneath this shimmering surface lies a troubling reality: much of what passes for "self-help" is a hodgepodge of feel-good platitudes, pseudoscience, magical thinking and oversimplified solutions that can do more harm than good. Alright, legends, this one’s a ripper. Harps and I go deep on the self-doubt that creeps in even when you’re nailing it, why we sabotage ourselves over the smallest things, and the mental gymnastics of stepping up to the next level. We also talk about those magic moments that remind us we’re actually not crap… even if it takes 700 people in an audience to convince us. Plus, I introduce Harps to a website that might just replace doom-scrolling with polar bears and puppies (ya welcome). For me, this was one of the most enjoyable, relevant, funny and amusing podcasts Tiff and I have done in a long time. While it's impossible to be objective about something you're in the middle of, to me it felt like a conversation that most people will connect with, relate to, benefit from or laugh at somewhere along the way. We spoke about 'getting good' at stuff, the social appeal and value of humility, our mutual inability to follow a script (versus going freestyle), my favourite guests (and why), the time my ego got destroyed in an airport lounge, the science and value of meaningful conversations, the intersection of purpose and work, and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This time on TYP, Tiff and I do a deep dive into the idea that you and I exist and operate in two-worlds; one that's external, physical, and visible (where 'life' happens) and another that's internal, non-physical, and invisible (where 'living' happens). We talk about the ever-present challenge of constantly navigating these two very-human 'places’.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today Harps and I are talking all things learning and learning potential.. The 61-year-old PhD candidate and the spontaneous, overnight pianist (that's me, apparently). It's fascinating how much we can learn and evolve when we give things a shot and find ourselves in the right environment with the right learning style that engages us. This was a fun chat between the fledgling pianist and the old bogan, and we sure covered some ground. On the conversational menu was living authentically, the ten-thousand-hour mastery rule, the value of paying attention to the wisdom of our body (bio-feedback), the other side of goals, the benefit in doing something 'un-you', the willingness to bravely 'be the worst' at something (in the beginning) and Tiff's curious tendency to say the (non)word.. "haffening": Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this thought-provoking episode of The You Project, we challenge the conventional wisdom that "picking a side" is always the right move. What if the most insightful perspective comes from the fence itself? We explore why our culture pushes us to choose teams, how tribal thinking warps our perception, and why maintaining thoughtful neutrality might be an act of courage rather than indecision. Join me as we examine the hidden benefits of seeing both sides and discover how "fence sitting" could be the vantage point we need in an increasingly polarised world. I'm fascinated with human potential; what's actually possible when somebody is genuinely prepared to do the work, face the fear, embrace the pain, overcome their self-sabotaging bulls**t and completely commit to the process of optimising what they have to work with. As someone who isn't wildly talented, brilliant or genetically gifted, l've long been obsessed with the challenge of defying my innate mediocrity and getting the most out of what l've got. This is a chat about that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Is it weird that at sixty-one I feel like I'm learning like a teenager? And that l'm going through a 'cognitive growth spurt'? And that my brain feels like it 'works better' than it did in my forties? While I spend much of my life teaching and coaching, l'm also a life-long learner who is still excited about what's next in my never-ending classroom. In this informal chat, Tiff and I talk about the fun, value and anti-ageing benefits of being a perpetual student. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hi Team, I had a guest pull out of today’s episode (they are unwell), so I’ve decided to re-share one of my all-time most popular monologues. I still get feedback about it, a few years on. Is ambition always a good idea? Even if it leads to 'success' (whatever that means to the individual), does that necessarily guarantee happiness, joy, fulfilment? Obviously, it can be an asset in certain contexts and situations but what are the potential psychological, emotional and interpersonal 'costs' of ambition? Seems to me that some super ambitious people might not be the most balanced (or healthy) cats going around. It also seems that if 'more' is always the goal then 'enough' is not a possibility. Maybe the challenge is to balance our ambition with our gratitude for what we have and where we are, right now?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'll be leading but I'll also be participating and sharing my own progress, updates and outcomes along the way. For those of you who need a little nudge, along with some structure, encouragement, support, direction and accountability to get your 'wheels of change' turning, take a listen and jump on board. Of course we want to protect and nurture those that we love, but at what point does that love and nurturing become a potential handicap for the growth, maturity and independence of the receiver? In this episode, we talk about when to step in and when to step back, rescuing and mollycoddling, when good intentions have bad outcomes, the growth that comes through navigating discomfort, uncertainty and mayhem and why sometimes our help is more of a hindrance. In this episode of TYP, Tiff and I chat primarily about the science of health, fitness, wellness and performance for women but we also cover some general fitness territory that will be of interest to the blokes. And while we don't 'prescribe' anything specifically, we do share enough ideas, recommendations and insights to provide a little direction and inspiration for those of you wanting to get started, and also for those of you wanting to improve your current regime.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This was a rather nondescript, all-over-the-place exchange between the boxer and the old bodybuilder but if you lean in, you might find something worth hearing or laughing at. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's what I think and/or feel - "I'm unlovable, l'm a failure, I'm stupid (etc.)" - and there's what is true (evidence, data, outcomes); "some people actually love me, I have succeeded in the past and in some contexts, I'm actually quite competent, capable and even, intelligent." We humans have a curious ability (propensity?) to think we're not good enough while simultaneously having evidence to the contrary. I often think I'm useless but I know I'm not.
