It would be impossible to overstate the legend of Michael Peterson in the annals of Australian surfing. 1976 World Champ, Peter Townend, described him as: “Miki Dora, James Dean and Marlon Brando, all rolled into one.” At the time, he was regarded by many as the best surfer that had ever lived. One of the most iconic images in surfing history is of Michael Peterson at Kirra in 1971 laying his board on rail in his iconic red trunks. The shot became the classic film poster for Morning of the Earth and was used as the cover of Tracks Magazine in February 1972. His Iconic turn consolidated his reputation as the fastest man to ever ride a surfboard. The Still image of this turn would go on to change the way surfers saw riding waves and would inspire infinite versions of it, generation after generation. In this special episode of Hardcore Surf History, host Tyler Breuer discusses the legendary Australian surfer Michael Peterson (MP) and the lasting impact of his iconic turn at Kira in 1971. Peterson's image became a hallmark in the surfing world, setting a standard for wave riding. To honor him, photographers Simon 'Shagga' Saffigna and Daniel Carmichael created the 'MP Classic Cutback Competition,' a global contest on Instagram where surfers compete to execute the best version of Peterson's famous turn. Esteemed judges include Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Dean Morrison, Steph Gilmore, Tom Curren, and Mark Occhilupo. The competition runs from June to September 24th, with videos tagged #MPCCC24 and following @only_one_MP. The episode features in-depth discussions with Simon ‘Shagga' Saffigna and Daniel Carmichael about Peterson's legacy, the competition's origins, entry details, judging criteria, and its impact on the surfing community. Tyrion sees two new Kingsguard appointed and oversees preparations for Stannis' arrival. The pyromancers have more than delivered on their wildfire promise. And Varys has foiled a plot to open the gates to Stannis. Mackelly and Simon dip a finger in the boiling oil. Chapter Review:Tyrion sends Shagga and the other mountain clansmen to the Kingswood to harry and delay Stannis' army as it finally makes its way to King's Landing. Tyrion and Bronn review the defenses on the river-side of the city and decree that the homes and shanties that lean against the outside of the wall, need to be removed (with minimal human misery if possible) before the invaders use them to scale the walls. Tyrion has learned that Winterfell has fallen to the Greyjoys and while celebrating the Starks' misfortune, he cannot help but feel that there is something not right about it. He ponders this while seeing Balon Swann and Osmund Kettleblack sworn in as the latest members of the Kingsguard. They replace the late Preston Greenfield and the disgraced Boros Blount, who capitulated too willingly when Tyrion's men forcibly wrested Prince Tommen from his care.Tyrion meets with Hallyne of the pyromancers who is miles ahead of schedule on the production of wildfire. Tyrion is skeptical, but Hallyne explains that their spells are working like they used to in the time of dragons. Tyrion faces complaints from ships' captains who've had their ships impounded in defense of the capital. He meets with Varys who has unearthed a plot to open the gates to Stannis' army. Not from the starving hordes, but from middle-class King's Landians who'd rather see the back of the Lannisters. One of them is a master armorer, who fell out with Tyrion over his great chain scheme. "The Pointy End" continues as we pick up with Tyrion & Bronn making their way through the Eyrie. Bronn agrees to serve as Tyrion's well-compensated shield and is put to the test when the hill tribes descend on them. Andrew and Manu briefly explore their history and how Tyrion displays his aptitude for the titular game of thrones in turning Shagga (son of Dolf) into his ally. Up at the Wall, news of Ned's imprisonment has circulated and Thorne goads Jon into trying to attack him, which earns Jon solitary confinement. Ghost helps Jon make up for it by alerting him to danger: a wight attacking Jeor Mormont in his chambers. Jon saves the day! Dany realizes that the process of coming to Westeros isn't going to be as clean as she might've hoped when she witnesses the Dothraki slaughtering the Lhazareen. She does what she can to try to spare some, including the priestess Mirri Maz Duur, and Drogo affirms her decision by fighting his angry subordinate Mago to the death, though he suffers a fateful wound. Points to Jason Momoa for telling the writers that we should see Drogo fight! iTunes link Google Play link
Meredith Geddes and Jeremy Baker rewatch Game of Thrones from the beginning.Arya manages to escape the Red Keep after her Braavosian sword master delays the guards sent to arrest her, but Sansa is captured. Robb hears the news and prepares the Northern armies to fight the Lannisters, leaving Bran behind to rule Winterfell. Lysa refuses to fight the Lannisters, and Catelyn leaves to join Robb's camp. Tyrion and Bronn are surrounded by Shagga and his men. Tyrion convinces them to escort them to Tywin, who will repay them. They arrive at Tywin's camp, where the latter asks Shagga to help them in their confrontation with the Starks in exchange for even greater payment. Joffrey appoints Tywin as his Hand. Sansa begs Joffrey to show mercy upon Ned. Joffrey agrees if Ned publicly recognizes Joffrey's claim to the throne and admits to having committed treason. At the Wall, some bodies affected by the White Walkers are found. In Essos, Drogo's soldiers begin attacking nearby settlements, enslaving locals in order to sell them and gain the money to buy the ships necessary to cross the Narrow Sea.
Starting out this weekend on Game of Owns, the possibility and factual hearsay of a brand new Game of Thrones inspired series has inspired Selina, Eric, Zack, Tyrion, and Shagga to head into battle alongside one another.
