Jason and Rachel are back in Westeros for a spoiler-filled recap and review of House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 1. The premiere picks up with the Dance of Dragons fully igniting: the Battle of the Gullet, Jace making reckless choices, Rhaenyra being sidelined, Baela and Rhaena facing dragon-sized consequences, Criston Cole seeing the true horror of the war, Aegon and Larys fleeing King's Landing, and Aemond becoming even more unsettling. We talk Team Black, Team Green, Winter Wolves, Sheepstealer, Alicent, Daemon, the Hightowers, Targaryen dysfunction, and why this episode's main lesson is that young people should maybe not be allowed to make war decisions. Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 1. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
House of the Dragon Season 3 finally lands, and the Battle of the Gullet gives the premiere one of the strongest hours the show has produced, complete with a death that reshapes the war and a 9 out of 10 score. It is a solo Father's Day episode, so Frank carries the news himself before settling into a full spoiler breakdown of the Targaryen civil war. Along the way Frank reacts to the first full Shrek 5 trailer and the cast joining Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, celebrates the official greenlight of the Dungeon Crawler Carl TV show at Peacock, and unpacks EA's new in-game advertising platform coming to Madden and College Football 26. The episode also brings back a roundtable from the previous week, where Phil and Thomas help untangle the messy, fast-moving Bricks and Minifigs consignment controversy and what it says about chasing clout in a legal dispute. Timestamps and Topics 0:00 Intro and Father's Day Catch-Up 1:03 Shrek 5 Trailer Breakdown 5:18 Dungeon Crawler Carl TV Show Greenlit at Peacock 11:10 EA's New In-Game Ads Platform 16:23 Bricks and Minifigs Controversy with Phil and Thomas 36:21 House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 Review 55:53 Father's Day Send-Off Key Takeaways The full Shrek 5 trailer eases a lot of the early animation backlash, introduces the next generation of characters voiced by Zendaya, Marcelo Hernandez, and Skyler Gisondo, and reunites the original trio under returning director Walt Dohrn and co-director Conrad Vernon. The Dungeon Crawler Carl series is officially greenlit at Peacock with Matt Dinniman confirming it, Seth MacFarlane executive producing through Fuzzy Door, and Chris Yost writing, plus a Princess Donut CGI test that won the creator over. EA is rolling out a proprietary in-game ad server built on the Frostbite engine to drop swappable, location-targeted brand placements across Madden, EA Sports FC, College Football 26, and NBA titles. The Bricks and Minifigs saga started as a local consignment dispute over a massive sealed Lego collection and spiraled into a national story involving Reckless Ben, Coffee Zilla, Patreon, and harassment of unrelated stores. The Battle of the Gullet leans into spectacle with two real ships built to collide and three dragons in the air, landing the death of Jace and setting Rhaenyra up to carry the blame. The premiere doubles down on its core theme of women like Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Rayna being boxed in by the men around them, earning a 9 dragon eggs out of 10 from Frank. Quotes "House of the Dragon is about smashing two gigantic CGI dragons together and seeing who survives." "I'm going to give this a solid nine dragon eggs out of ten." "You kids nowadays, you don't know the joy of a DVD menu." "I don't believe there is good, I don't believe there is evil. I believe everybody has the capacity for both." (Phil) "When everything is said in clickbait titles instead of what is actually going on, suddenly everybody is a bad guy and everybody is a good guy." Art by Mike S. Ira Parker is a writer, executive producer and showrunner who currently serves as executive producer and showrunner of HBO's A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, which he co-created with George R. R. Martin. Taking place nearly a century before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series follows a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, as great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits await these improbable friends. Previously, Parker served as a writer and co-executive producer on the first season of HBO's HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, the GAME OF THRONES prequel centered on the Targaryen dynasty, where he penned episode four and played a key role in establishing the series' early narrative.
Note: This episode was actually recorded back in March and is only now hitting the airwaves. Our then-obsession is no longer new news, but we still miss those March days of weekly binge-watching, and we really miss the world of Westeros. In this episode, Cyberpink teams up with our sister podcast American Roulette (美轮美换) and special guests, Lin Santu and Wang Haolan, to unpack the new HBO Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In this intimate, grounded tale, dragons are gone. Instead, we get the class-flipping dynamic of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Prince Aegon V Targaryen). Thanks to our Partners, Pico Technology and AutelWatch Full Video EpisodeIn this episode, Matt Fanslow uses Game of Thrones, specifically the arc of Daenerys Targaryen, as a metaphor for what can happen when a mechanical or technical specialist moves from employee to shop owner. The comparison is not that former technicians suddenly “burn everything to the ground,” but that people can start with strong ideals, endure pressure, accumulate responsibility, and slowly rationalize decisions they once hated from the other side of the counter.Matt draws a parallel between Daenerys' journey, from abused and powerless exile to powerful ruler, and the path of a technician who opens a shop after years of saying, “If I were in charge, I'd do things differently.” At first, that new owner may try to build the kind of workplace they always wanted: better pay, better equipment, better treatment, and fewer manipulative incentive structures. But then reality intrudes. Bills come due. Tooling, software, subscriptions, payroll, benefits, facility costs, and client pressure pile up. What once looked like greed from the employee side may start to look like survival from the owner side.A major thread in the episode is the difference between explaining behavior and excusing it. Matt is careful not to justify poor management, bad pay plans, or unfair treatment. Instead, he looks at how stress, fear, frustration, and financial pressure can slowly change a person's beliefs. The former employee who despised production-based pay may eventually install a production-based pay plan. The shop owner who wanted to buy the best equipment may eventually stop doing that when employees fail to care for it. The person who promised to never become “that owner” may wake up, or perhaps never wake up, having become very close to the thing they once opposed. The episode also touches on incentive design. Matt discusses how incentive-based pay plans can increase production, but only if the surrounding system is fair. When a mechanical or technical specialist is paid based on production, but too many external forces affect their ability to produce, the pay plan can feel like punishment. Dispatch, workflow, parts delays, bad information, poor estimating, broken processes, and uneven support can all take money out of the worker's hands. In that environment, the game feels unfair, even if the pay plan itself is not inherently unethical.Matt argues that pay plans should not be used as a substitute for management. A compensation structure cannot do the work of leadership, communication, process improvement, fairness, and accountability. Straight hourly can work. Flat rate can work. Hybrid incentive plans can work. But none of them work automatically, and none of them remove the need for honest management and honest self-assessment.The larger point is that people rarely change all at once. They shift slowly. The language changes first. Then the justifications. Then the policies. Then the culture. Like Daenerys, the fall is not simply about one bad decision at the end. It is the accumulated effect of pressure, loss, betrayal, fear, and power.Matt closes by reflecting on Game of Thrones itself, noting that the show was among the best when it was at its peak, even if the ending remains debated. He suggests that Daenerys' storyline may be worth revisiting not just as fantasy, but as a study in how ideals can erode when pressure, power, and isolation build over time.Key TopicsThe former technician turned shop owner: The episode examines what happens when someone who once criticized shop ownership suddenly has to carry the risk, payroll, bills, tooling costs, subscriptions, client demands, and employee issues themselves.Daenerys Targaryen as a shop-owner metaphor: Daenerys begins with a desire to break abusive systems, but eventually becomes capable of the very behavior she once opposed. Matt uses that arc to frame how former employees can become the kind of owners they used to resent.Explaining versus excusing: A central distinction in the episode is that understanding why owners behave a certain way does not automatically make those behaviors right.Incentive pay and production pressure: Production-based pay plans can produce measurable gains, but they also create resentment when employees are held accountable for factors outside their control. The danger of using pay plans as management: Matt argues that compensation systems cannot replace leadership, process design, accountability, and honest communication.Stress, fear, and rationalization: The episode explores how frustration, anxiety, financial pressure, and disappointment can slowly alter a person's beliefs and management style. The slow drift into becoming what you opposed: The episode's core warning is that becoming “that owner” usually does not happen in one dramatic moment. It happens one rationalization at a time.Quotes“When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies.”“We have to be able to explain things without excusing them.”“The pay plan cannot be the manager.”“You can have a straight hourly shop where production is good. You can have a flat-rate shop where people are happy. But neither one happens by accident.”“A production incentive becomes punishment when too many things outside the employee's control take money out of their hands.”“A lot of people do not become bad owners all at once. It is slow, and then all at once.”“The danger is not just power. It is pressure, fear, frustration, and then the story we tell ourselves afterward.”Thanks to our Partner, Pico TechnologyAre you chasing elusive automotive problems? This week, Da7e and Neil are back in Westeros learning maybe a little too much about Ser Arlan of Pennytree as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continues to track the rise of his protege, Ser Duncan the Tall. In The Calm [04:58], they do a bit of Banner Tracking as more famous houses join the fray with a ferocious burst of jousting action. They also discuss the arrival of House Targaryen to the party and break down all the princes, blonde and otherwise. And before they head into the spoilery Storm section, Neil does a deep dive into the currency of Westeros so that everyone can convert their silver stags into gold dragons as they tearfully sell their most beloved horse. Then in The Storm [01:01:38], Da7e has questions about the Targaryen family tree, their current obsession with the Blackfyre Rebellion, and the tradition of houses changing sigils over time. They also breakdown the episode 3 teaser and what secrets it's hiding in plain sight before discussing some alleged episode titles for the rest of the season.Next week, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continues with episode three, "The Squire" on Sunday evening, then Da7e and Neil will be back in your feeds with their deep dive on Monday afternoon. To interact with the show, send your comments and questions to stormofspoilers@gmail.com, and follow us on Twitter/X and Bluesky @Da7eandNeil.You can also support Da7e and Neil and get all kinds of bonus content (from the Game of Thrones era to the LOST rewatch to our Twin Peaks rewatch project to our current Adventure Pod and Hannibal watch project) by subscribing to our Patreon here: patreon.com/Da7eandNeil
