From the publisher:"Esteemed presidential historian Stephen F. Knott takes readers on a sobering tour of the lowlights in the American presidency, showing how presidents from Thomas Jefferson to Donald Trump have engaged in reckless conspiracy-mongering about their political opponents in an effort to increase their power and privilege.Today we are inundated with conspiracy theories—QAnon, the “Big Lie,” Pizzagate, the Epstein Files, and innumerable false claims about vaccines and other medicines. But the widespread proliferation of lies and misinformation can make it easy to forget that conspiracy theories have been part of American life from the beginning. The land of the free and the home of the brave has also been the den of false rumors and conspiratorial claims about one's political enemies—not merely by rank-and-file Americans but also by our most powerful and consequential elected leaders. As political historian Stephen F. Knott recounts in painful detail, the Commander in Chief of the United States has often acted as Conspirator in Chief.Part presidential history and part descent into a political Dante's Inferno, Conspirator in Chief is a tour through the Hall of Shame in American politics. Thomas Jefferson used surrogates to spread false claims about Alexander Hamilton in order to destroy his political influence, attacked newspaper editors who were critical of his party and policies, and used conspiracy theories about the Federalists to tarnish them in the eyes of the American people. This brand of demagoguery reached an apex in the presidency of Andrew Jackson, who publicly defamed abolitionists, manipulated newspapers to publish his conspiracies, and spread his own “Big Lie” about the 1824 election being stolen from him in a “corrupt bargain.” Andrew Johnson spread false accusations about the Radical Republicans, declared the need for “white emancipation,” and made spurious claims about the dangers of a coming Black supremacy as a result of Reconstruction. Woodrow Wilson, according to Knott, continued Johnson's racist and conspiratorial interpretation of American history. In addition to our most infamous presidents, Knott uncovers the surprising conspiratorial inclinations of our more esteemed leaders, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. Knott shows how both presidents painted their opponents in an extreme light, casting aspersions on political rivals by calling them “betrayers of America,” “spies, saboteurs, and traitors,” and comparing them to Nazis, fascists, and communists. Less surprising are the presidencies of Richard Nixon and Donald J. Trump, both known for their propagation of racist and paranoid beliefs and their denigration of political opponents. As Knott demonstrates in excruciating detail, Trump epitomizes the worst of this long American tradition. While Trump is in a league of his own regarding the sheer output and outlandishness of his conspiracy-mongering, he did not begin this odious practice."Information on Dr. Knott's book can be found at https://kansaspress.ku.edu/9780700641284/His website can be found at https://www.stephenfknott.com/AxelbankHistory.com is designed by https://www.ellieclairedesigns.com/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

In this episode of The Missional Life Podcast, Jamie Hulker invites us into a grace-filled, Scripture-centered conversation about identity, calling, and God's design for women. This episode is both freeing and deeply grounding in God's Word.
Beyond the Sketchbook: Mastering the Business of Design with Industry Leaders. Esteemed practitioners Keith Granet, Grant Kirkpatrick, Tom Stringer, and Louis Taylor share candid insights into the origin stories, critical business skills, and forward-looking strategies necessary to build and sustain a successful design practice. Moderated by Cheryl Durst (EVP and CEO of IIDA), the panel focused on the transition from being a talented designer to running a thriving, resilient business, covering genesis, operations, talent management, branding, and future-proofing. Origin Stories and Industry Appreciation: The panelists shared diverse paths into design. Some were drawn in early (Grant and Tom), while others arrived via finance and business consulting (Keith and Louis). Louis Taylor (Finance, SchappacherWhite) noted that, coming from auditing various industries, design is “absolutely the best industry to work in by far.” The 80/20 Rule of Entrepreneurship: A critical takeaway for design professionals is understanding that running a firm is primarily a business function. Keith Granet and Grant Kirkpatrick stressed that the time split is often 70–80% focused on business (HR, finance, marketing, systems) and only 20–30% on actual design work. Keith Granet (Granet and Associates, Leaders of Design) emphasized that good systems and data tracking (like a monthly “executive summary” of financials) are “freeing” and allow for greater creativity by alleviating stress over payroll and rent. Infrastructure and Skill Development: Hire Your Weaknesses: The consensus was to surround yourself with great consultants (finance, PR, marketing) and “hire your weaknesses” to empower the principal designer to focus on their “highest and best use.” Future Talent Gap: Louis Taylor noted that junior staff coming out of school often require significant training in “soft skills” (people skills, professional email etiquette, presentation, listening) to bridge the gap between conceptual learning and the real-world practice. Branding and Storytelling: Effective messaging must be authentic and focus on an idea bigger than the work itself. Grant Kirkpatrick (KAA Design Group) detailed their use of “The Five Whys” to articulate a vision, which for his firm is the belief that “design elevates the human spirit.” Tom Stringer (Tom Stringer Design Partners) built his brand around his personal value of adventure, which attracts clients who are “kindred spirits.” He emphasized that design is predicated on building trust over multiple generations. Future Proofing and Resilience: AI and Technology: The panelists recognized AI as a powerful, unavoidable tool that will alleviate mundane tasks and enhance existing work, though it also presents a significant challenge (“scares the shit out of us,” noted Keith). Firms must embrace it. * **Talent Retention:** **Institutional knowledge** is key to longevity. Firms are focusing on creating exceptional workspaces, competitive benefits (like sabbatical programs), and internal culture to recruit and **retain the best talent.** * **Mentorship:** Mentoring should be a fundamental part of a firm’s **culture**, not a forced, rigid program. It is essential at all career stages, providing wisdom and long-term connections that help owners stay agile and resourceful.

Esteemed listeners, this episode delves into the multifaceted themes surrounding Thanksgiving, particularly reflecting on the historical distortions associated with America's foundational narratives. We explore the implications of these narratives, contrasting the theocratic origins of early settlements with the more recent evolution towards a constitutionally limited republic. Our discourse extends to significant advancements in human progress, including the elimination of measles and rubella in Cabo Verde, and the transformative potential of innovation in repurposing waste into valuable resources. Furthermore, we critically examine the often misconstrued narrative surrounding capitalism, which, contrary to popular belief, has fostered unprecedented wealth and resource availability over the past two centuries. Join us as we navigate these topics, offering insights that underscore the importance of recognizing historical truths and contemporary achievements in the spirit of Thanksgiving. This episode of the Secular Foxhole podcast offers an incisive analysis of the intersections between philosophy, economics, and contemporary social issues, as articulated by hosts Blair and Martin. Central to the discussion is the concept of human progress, particularly in the context of capitalism's role in fostering innovation and improving living standards. The hosts dissect articles from Human Progress that reveal a world that is, against popular belief, richer and more resource-abundant than ever before, attributing this trend to the principles of capitalism that drive technological advancements. The episode also features a critical examination of the cultural landscape, influenced heavily by philosophical ideas stemming from the Enlightenment. Blair and Martin highlight the necessity of a systemic philosophical approach to combat the prevailing moral narratives that advocate for self-sacrifice at the expense of individual flourishing. In this vein, they reference lectures from the Ayn Rand Institute which delve into the philosophical void that has contributed to our current cultural malaise. Ultimately, the episode serves as both a reminder of the remarkable strides humanity has made and a call to action for listeners to support the podcast and the ideologies that promote progress and enlightenment.Takeaways: In this episode, we explore the historical distortions surrounding America's founding, emphasizing the distinction between the theocracy established by early settlers and the later constitutional republic. We discuss the significant advancements in human progress, highlighting how innovation has transformed waste into wealth, benefitting society at large. Contrary to pervasive pessimism, the podcast elucidates how the world has become increasingly richer and resourceful over the past two centuries, primarily due to capitalism. We address the misconceptions propagated by media, particularly regarding natural disasters, and underscore the declining death tolls as societies advance economically. The episode emphasizes the importance of philosophical foundations in shaping cultural landscapes, particularly in the context of altruism versus egoism. We conclude by acknowledging the contributions of the Ayn Rand Institute in fostering intellectual discourse, particularly regarding the Enlightenment and its contemporary implications. Esteemed forensic anthropologist, Dr. Erin Kimmerle, founder and executive director of the Institute of Forensic Anthropology at the University of South Florida, joins us to discuss her groundbreaking investigations into the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys. Dating back to the early 1900s, the Dozier School, once a juvenile reform institution in Florida; its reputation is now synonymous with the counts of horrific abuse, neglect, and torture suffered by the boys sent there, many of whom were Black and committed only minor offenses like truancy and trespassing. Many never returned home, dying while trying to escape or from forced labor and mistreatment. When the school was officially shut down in 2011, families and descendants of the boys sought answers about who was buried in its unmarked cemetery. With 81 recorded deaths but half the burial sites missing, Dr. Erin Kimmerle led a four-year investigation that combined archaeological excavation, cemetery exhumation, and criminal inquiry. Using ground-penetrating radar, DNA testing, forensic art, and historical records, she helped uncover one of America's darkest and most shameful chapters, while drawing attention to the injustices juveniles still face today. We also explore the broader pursuit of historical justice, connecting the Dozier investigation to similar mass graves—such as those tied to Canada's Indigenous residential schools and the Tuam Mother and baby home in Ireland. And yes, there's even time for Amelia Earhart! Be sure to purchase Dr. Erin Kimmerle's book, We Carry Their Bones: The Search for Justice at the Dozier School for Boys!
