She recalls kneeling before him to save the last nine of her men and finds no mercy in the king, only duty. They're rescued by, what even the nose-less can tell is a slave-ship. Mackelly and Simon move things from the frying pan into the fire.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister, Penny, and Jorah Mormont are still aboard the Selaesori Qhoran AKA “the Stinky Steward.” It's been becalmed for nearly two weeks and the sailors are beginning to question if Tyrion and Penny are actually lucky. They are also eyeing Pretty Pig with hungry looks. To distract and amuse them, Tyrion agrees to joust with Penny. He's kind of hopeless, but she points out that that is rather the point. Afterward, he goads Mormont about his plans for Tyrion and Daenerys until the knight knocks Tyrion's tooth out. A pyrrhic victory right there.Finally a wind picks up, but it portends an almighty storm and Moqorro admits that the ship was never going to reach Qarth, not because it was going to redirect to Meereen, but because this storm was going to destroy it. The storm is immense and the ships is ruined. It comes through still afloat but with no mast, no Moqorro, flooded lower sections, and no hope of survival. But a ship is spotted headed their way. We continue our wedding series with Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Haven" -- in which Deanna Troi's arranged marriage is interrupted by the arrival of an AIDS allegory. It's … rough. It's rough.  Note: Liz says two completely inaccurate things with absolute confidence: first she claims that Wyatt is the only guest star with a costume change (false, that is Lwaxana) and then she claims that he's wearing grey in the holodeck scene (he is wearing burgundy). And unfortunately these were LOAD-BEARING INACCURACIES that couldn't easily be edited out. Never trust a podcaster.  "I don't know who wrote this, but I cannot support them."  We know early TNG loved a Special Boy, but why is Wyatt Miller the protagonist of this episode?  Is Lwaxana Troi a reliable source of information on Betazoid culture and custom?  "Genetic bonding" is a fancy word for "child betrothal" and also sounds kiiiiiiiinda sketchy? Mackelly and Simon roll out the barbed wire and start digging the trenches.Chapter Review:In the Old Palace of Sunspear, Areo Hotah watches as Maester Caleotte delivers an ebony chest to Prince Doran Martell. Inside is the skull of Gregor Clegane, which Obara Sand places on a marble pedestal. Doran declares that “the Mountain rides no more.” Ser Balon Swann, there on behalf of Queen Cersei, is made uneasy by the spicy food, the politics, and Princess Arianne's careful attention.Cersei's letter requests that Myrcella visit King's Landing, with Trystane to accompany her and Doran to take Oberyn's seat on the small council. Doran suggests they travel by ship, and Balon's reluctance to travel by sea does not go unnoticed.After the feast, Doran gathers Obara, Nymeria, Tyene, Arianne, Ellaria, and Hotah in his solar. Ellaria breaks at the Sand Snakes' refusal to accept the end of the blood feud with the Lannisters, rejecting the endless cycle of vengeance. When she leaves, the Sand Snakes demand war, but Doran forces them to swear obedience before revealing that Cersei's invitation is a trap meant to kill Trystane on the road. She still blames him for her brother's death and the fact that she no longer has an act. He is confident that Daenerys will take Penny into her service. It takes coming through a tumultuous storm to make the young girl realize that she wants to live. They sail close to the ruins of Valyria, closer than the crew would like. In Part 5 of our recap and review of the final season of Game of Thrones, we finally run into some of the issues that Dave has heard about for many years. The wheels have not fallen off completely...but there is a very big alignment problem going on here. Mackelly and Simon refuse to take the bait.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister arrives in Volantis as a prisoner of Ser Jorah Mormont. He tries all his tricks to wheedle out of his predicament but gets nowhere. In the city, they see the High Priest of R'hllor preaching a pro-Daenerys message to a multitude of slaves, who are here for all of it. On a detour to a brothel during a fact-finding mission, he's waylaid by a bear-like Westerosi knight who plans to take him to the Queen. Mackelly and Simon wonder which queen?Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister wakes aboard the Shy Maid. His companions have pulled him from the river and are treating his extremities with vinegar to prevent greyscale infection. He must prick his extremities every few hours to check for loss of feeling.He talks to Young Griff (aka Aegon Targaryen) over a game of cyvasse. The young man shares what he's been told of his rescue. When things looked bad in King's Landing, Varys paid a tanner for his baby and smuggled the real Aegon across the Narrow Sea to Ilyrio Mopatis. Tyrion gives the young prince a few useful lessons, in particular not to expect a warm welcome from Aunty Daenerys. And to perhaps go to Dorne and lay his claim to the Iron Throne for himself. Then when they do reunite, it will be as equals.Tyrion visits Selhorys with Haldon. They learn that the Red Priests are singing Dany's praises, that she is Azor Ahai reborn. But that the nobility of the Rhoyne are very much opposed to her thwarting of the slave trade. Mackelly and Simon reach for their goggles.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and his companions aboard the Shy Maid have reached a ruined city along the Rhoyne now called the Sorrows. A mysterious, unnatural fog surrounds the Shy Maid, unsettling its passengers. Passing ruins like the Palace of Love, Tyrion reflects on Tysha and Jaime's betrayal.A man aboard the Kingfisher, a boat traveling in the opposite direction, calls out to them. Yandry asks about news from Volantis. The man says the city will be engaged in the war by the end of the year. This bothers Griff, Illyrio Mopatis has paid one of the city's triarchs many times over for the man's support of Dany.Nearing the Bridge of Dream, Griff orders Young Griff below to avoid the dangerous stone men. When he resists, Tyrion reveals he knows Young Griff's true identity and urges him to obey. Tyrion also exposes Griff as Jon Connington, former Hand of the King and Rhaegar's friend. For his final party trick, Tyrion outs himself as Tyrion of House Lannister. Though they initially pass the bridge safely, they somehow pass beneath the bridge a second time. The king offers Jon a surprising gift, then adds to the shock by revealing his risky plan to win the north. Jon redirects him to a new plan that is safer and has huge upsides. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow joins Bowen Marsh to inspect winter food stores held beneath Castle Black. Despite past generosity from lords and a long summer, feeding Stannis' army and wildlings has depleted supplies. Marsh proposes winter rations early. Jon agrees, knowing it'll cause unrest.Jon later meets Stannis, Melisandre, and others in the king's solar. Stannis gifts Jon a controlled Rattleshirt as a soldier. Discussion turns to Mors Umber's terms for support. Stannis hesitates, but Jon urges acceptance, warning that rejecting Mors' terms would turn the North against him. Stannis reveals plans to take the Dreadfort, but Jon argues the Boltons will return too soon and crush Stannis' force. Pressed to arm wildlings, Jon reluctantly offers basic gear, wary of violating the Night's Watch vows. Privately, Stannis tempts Jon again with legitimization and Winterfell. Jon refuses but proposes recruiting Northern mountain clans instead. If successful, Stannis could retake Deepwood Motte and build support. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow watches as Mance Rayder is dragged to his death. The former Brother of the Night's Watch and King Beyond the Wall is a broken man desperately pleading for his life and disavowing his kingship. He's put in a cage above a pit of kindling. Melisandre brings forth the Horn of Joramun, which if blown would have brought down the Wall and let the enemy in. She burns it in the pit, and the flames reach up to Mance.Acting on Jon's orders, several of his men loose shafts to put their former brother out of his misery. As the smell of burning flesh fills the courtyard, Stannis unsheathes Lightbringer, brighter than ever, and the gate through the Wall is opened. The Free Folk are allowed through - the promise of soup and safety from the terrors of winter convince most. But some resist.Stannis has them burn weirwood branches to show their conversion from the Old Gods to R'Hllor and to take the knee before him. All this was against Jon's advice. But Stannis is more interested in loyalty than love.Later, Jon discusses with Clydas the passage that Aemon left for Jon, which describes Lightbringer's heat. Stannis' sword is cold. The onion knight has rowed to Sweetsister after being abandoned by Salladhor Saan. The Lyseni pirate has given up following orders after half his ships were lost to storms on the journey south from Eastwatch. That is the final straw after Stannis has shown no sign of rewarding anyone for their service. Instead he intends to sail to the Stepstones for some more profitable piracy.Lord Godric ponders selling Davos to Cersei - who is in charge again after the death of Tywin, which is news to Davos. Godric won't allow a bird to be sent to Castle Black - he won't take sides in the Game of Thrones.But he does recall his father aiding Ned Stark in a similar fashion at the start of Robert's Rebellion. Ned got away, leaving a fisherman's daughter pregnant - she called the child Jon. Davos can go to White Harbor but the Manderlys have thrown their lot in with the Freys. They are welcomed by Young Griff who dyes his hair blue in the Tyroshi fashion - after his mother - but Tyrion thinks that it won't fly in Westeros. Griff the elder is far from pleased to welcome Tyrion. A letter from Mopatis explains what is going on, but doesn't change his mood. He thinks Danaerys would be well advised to reject a kin and kingslayer from her service. Simon and Mackelly admire Jon's transformation - from boy to man.Chapter Review:Jon has met with Maester Aemon, who provided the same advice he once gave to his brother Egg: Kill the boy so that the man may be born. Time to grow up. Jon puts this into practice when he meets with Gilly and explains what she must do to save Dalla's baby - give up her own. She agrees under considerable duress.Next, he meets with Sam who must go to Oldtown and become a maester. Sam is flustered, a Tarly cannot wear a chain of servitude, and he cannot learn to heal because he's scared of blood. Jon reminds him that he's a brother of the Night's Watch, and while he cannot order him to be brave, he can order him to hide his fears. He will go and he'll earn his chain.Lastly, Jon commissions Bedwyck to refit and take command of the abandoned way-castle at Icemark. He'll command 30 men. Bedwyck's a seasoned ranger and Jon knows he'll prove more than capable. He gives Janos Slynt the same opportunity at Greyguard. Slynt refuses. Jon gives him a chance to back down but the oaf won't listen. When Jon calls for his seizure and execution Slynt's friends melt away. Afterward, he talks with Melisandre who gives him an ominous warning. Simon and Mackelly interpret her meaning.Chapter Review:Ghost races along the Wall in the night. As he runs, he senses his packmates in their various locations around Westeros. Jon Snow wakes in Castle Black realizing that he was warging Ghost in the night. He dresses and sees the unsigned grant from King Stannis sitting on his desk. This won't be an easy day.Jon finds Stannis and Melisandre in the King's Tower. The king is angry over another rejection letter from a northern house to his call for their support. This time it's 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont who tells him that House Mormont will support only the King in the North, whose name is Stark. Jon tells Stannis that only Mance Rayder can bind the wildlings to the king. Stannis knows but still can't spare the man's life. He is an oathbreaker. Stannis asks if Jon has signed the grant giving Stannis all of the empty Night's Watch castles. Jon hasn't, the ask is too high. Jon suggests that the Night's Watch provide the leaders for the castles and Stannis provides the garrisons, the need not Take the Black. Stannis rejects the idea. Melisandre walks Jon out. Outside she tells him that she has seen him in the flames with enemies all around. She sees ice, blood, daggers, and cold. From Alica Spencer-Hall and Spencer Gutt's Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography: "Marginalised identities are often written out of the historical record by those with the privilege of formulating “historical truth”. The Middle Ages is frequently viewed as a time “where men were men, women were women, everyone was the same race and practised the same faith, and no one was corrupted by technology, sexuality or democracy”. This is not how any medievalist worth their salt would put it. Disingenuous interrogation of the presence of trans people in history is rarely about the factual specifics of the past alone. If talking about trans lives is “anachronistic”, then “trans-ness [is] not an inextricable part of humanity or human diversity”. The transphobe's dream is an imaginary medieval past in which everyone knows their (gendered) place. Similar themes emerge in the usage of the Middle Ages by the alt-right and beyond: those who fantasize a past in which everyone who mattered was straight, cisgender, white, and Christian.
