And he's showing signs of coming back to life after suffering miserably as a slave. Jorah agrees that there is real danger. He thinks the Yunkai'i have lost the war. Between the Pale Mare, the unsullied, and the dragons the Meereenese have nothing to fear. Mackelly and Simon wistfully recall their college days.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei Lannister is shaved (all over) and must walk through the streets of King's Landing, from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep to atone for the cherry-picked sins that she has confessed to. She's a lion and won't be cowed. She keeps her eyes on the Red Keep and the promise of seeing her son King Tommen again as the crowd pelt her with insults and rotten flora and fauna. She stumbles, slips in excrement, and sees faces from her past in the crowd. Eventually the abuse takes its toll and she realizes that she has made a fatal mistake. This crowd of baying peasants will never again see and fear her as the queen. WIth this she breaks and runs, then crawls the rest of the way.But she is met by Qyburn and the newly appointed Kingsguard brother Ser Robert Strong - all 8ft of him. Suddenly she feels a great wash of relief. The condemned men's crime was cannibalism. Asha isn't surprised. The lords and knights have access to horse meat and a warm longhall. The smallfolk are left to starve and freeze. King Stannis attends with Arnolf Karstark at his side. After the show is over, Ser Clayton Suggs asks Asha if she enjoyed watching her own fate play out? He's chased off by Aly Mormont and Ser Justin Massey.After Justin escorts Asha to the longhall for dinner, she eats horsemeat while noticing the clear divide between King Stannis' army. The northmen sit on one side while the southrons sit on the other. When Justin begins to argue with the others about the best path forward, Arnolf says if they march on Winterfell they will defeat Bolton's army within a moon's turn. Justin disagrees, and when his courage is called into question, he storms out of the hall.Asha follows him out but is immediately lost in the snow. She's once again accosted by Suggs. However, they're distracted by the sound of horses. Out of the snow and night comes a band of riders. After a tense few moments, Tris Botley bends his knee in front of her. He and several other Iron Born were ransomed by Tycho Nestoris, who urgently needs to speak with King Stannis. When the Braavosi banker realizes who Asha is, he says he brought her a gift. He presents an old man and a young woman. Tyrion assures Penny that Crunch and Pretty will be looked after by Sweets. Tyrion tries to convince Brown Ben Plum to keep them safe. He seduces him with promises of the riches that await any man who aligns himself with Tyrion. She's brought before the High Septon. She admits to her infidelities, but denies the big ones: incest, treason, reicide, and deicide, all of which Osney Kettleblack implicated her in, under torture. The incest one is awkward for the High Septon. It is Stannis Baratheon's accusation and he has fallen in with a false god. He puts his faith in trial by combat to determine her guilt or innocence.She is finally allowed a visitor; her uncle Kevan Lannister. He's angry with her corruption of his son Lancel. And brings only bad news: Jaime has not returned, he was last seen cavorting the Riverlands with a woman believed to be Brienne of Tarth. The Tyrells and Tarlys have come to town to defend Queen Margaery, against whom the High Septon admits the case is weak. Kevan has assembled a whole new Small Council filled with nobody who cares for Cersei.Worst of all is the news that Myrcella has been wounded in Dorne. Cersei blames Tyrion. Good luck with that! Jonos Bracken wants several pounds of flesh as his payment for delivering the Blackwoods to the King's Peace. Jamie points out that besieging is only a step on that road and that he, Jamie, is here to end the siege.Inside the castle, he treats with Tytos Blackwood. Jamie has a bit more respect for the lord of House Blackwood, but demands considerable recompense and a hostage for the Blackwood's treason.With the hostage in tow, he heads back to Riverrun en route to King's Landing. They stay the night in Pennytree, where Brienne of Tarth arrives looking for Jamie. Mackelly and Simon look for the silver linings.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Penny, are sold into slavery outside the walls of Meereen to Yezzan zo Qaggaz a Yunkish noble, they fetch a good price with the promise of entertainment. Their immediate boss will be a functionary who goes by Nurse. He's the one they'll answer to. Tyrion convinces Nurse that Ser Jorah Mormont is part of the act, and he convinces Yezzan to complete the set. The knight is listless and inconsolable after learning that Daenerys Targaryen has married Hizdahr zo Loraq. Nurse has them watch a public punishment of slaves who tried to escape. It's revolting and convincing.Their first duty is to perform for Yezzan as he hosts the assembled warlords and nobility. It goes well and Tyrion curries more favor when he defeats Brown Ben Plum at cyvasse, winning considerable gold for his master at the expense of the sellsword. Nurse is pleased and says that Tyrion and Penny will perform in the grand fighting pits when they reopen. Among the baggage rolls Asha Greyjoy, fettered and guarded by Alysane “She-Bear” Mormont. Asha is Stannis's living trophy for the lords of the north. The king plans to march 100 leagues through the forest in 15 days to Winterfell. A feat many of his followers claim his brother Robert would have done in 10 days. But this king is not his brother.Asha watches Stannis's grim procession with a broken ankle and a sharper mind. She recalls kneeling before him to save the last nine of her men and finds no mercy in the king, only duty. The southrons doubted the march but the northmen insisted.Snow begins on the fourth day and never stops. Wagons vanish through ice, men freeze or simply sit down to die. The queen's men call for a sacrifice to please their red god. “Pray harder,” Stannis tells them. Each night brings a smaller campfire and a growing list of losses. By day 20, Asha's cart horse dies. They're rescued by, what even the nose-less can tell is a slave-ship. Mackelly and Simon move things from the frying pan into the fire.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister, Penny, and Jorah Mormont are still aboard the Selaesori Qhoran AKA “the Stinky Steward.” It's been becalmed for nearly two weeks and the sailors are beginning to question if Tyrion and Penny are actually lucky. They are also eyeing Pretty Pig with hungry looks. To distract and amuse them, Tyrion agrees to joust with Penny. He's kind of hopeless, but she points out that that is rather the point. Afterward, he goads Mormont about his plans for Tyrion and Daenerys until the knight knocks Tyrion's tooth out. A pyrrhic victory right there.Finally a wind picks up, but it portends an almighty storm and Moqorro admits that the ship was never going to reach Qarth, not because it was going to redirect to Meereen, but because this storm was going to destroy it. The storm is immense and the ships is ruined. It comes through still afloat but with no mast, no Moqorro, flooded lower sections, and no hope of survival. But a ship is spotted headed their way. We continue our wedding series with Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Haven" -- in which Deanna Troi's arranged marriage is interrupted by the arrival of an AIDS allegory. It's … rough. It's rough.  Note: Liz says two completely inaccurate things with absolute confidence: first she claims that Wyatt is the only guest star with a costume change (false, that is Lwaxana) and then she claims that he's wearing grey in the holodeck scene (he is wearing burgundy). And unfortunately these were LOAD-BEARING INACCURACIES that couldn't easily be edited out. Never trust a podcaster.  "I don't know who wrote this, but I cannot support them."  We know early TNG loved a Special Boy, but why is Wyatt Miller the protagonist of this episode?  Is Lwaxana Troi a reliable source of information on Betazoid culture and custom?  "Genetic bonding" is a fancy word for "child betrothal" and also sounds kiiiiiiiinda sketchy? Were Ian Troi and the Millers attempting to pull some sort of eugenics shenanigans? (Streaming movie about Michelle Yeoh taking out Ian Troi, co-starring Jess Bush as young Lwaxana, when?) Mackelly and Simon roll out the barbed wire and start digging the trenches.Chapter Review:In the Old Palace of Sunspear, Areo Hotah watches as Maester Caleotte delivers an ebony chest to Prince Doran Martell. Inside is the skull of Gregor Clegane, which Obara Sand places on a marble pedestal. Doran declares that “the Mountain rides no more.” Ser Balon Swann, there on behalf of Queen Cersei, is made uneasy by the spicy food, the politics, and Princess Arianne's careful attention.Cersei's letter requests that Myrcella visit King's Landing, with Trystane to accompany her and Doran to take Oberyn's seat on the small council. Doran suggests they travel by ship, and Balon's reluctance to travel by sea does not go unnoticed.After the feast, Doran gathers Obara, Nymeria, Tyene, Arianne, Ellaria, and Hotah in his solar. Ellaria breaks at the Sand Snakes' refusal to accept the end of the blood feud with the Lannisters, rejecting the endless cycle of vengeance. When she leaves, the Sand Snakes demand war, but Doran forces them to swear obedience before revealing that Cersei's invitation is a trap meant to kill Trystane on the road. Instead of violating guest right by killing Swann, Doran assigns each Sand Snake a role: Obara will lead Swann to hunt Darkstar, Nymeria will escort Myrcella to court and take the small council seat, and Tyene will infiltrate the Sept of Baelor. Arianne will remain in Sunspear as his heir. Penny is keeping to herself, and Ser Jorah is brusque and unpleasant as always.Tyrion slowly ingratiates himself with Penny, and they start a friendship. She still blames him for her brother's death and the fact that she no longer has an act. He is confident that Daenerys will take Penny into her service. In Part 5 of our recap and review of the final season of Game of Thrones, we finally run into some of the issues that Dave has heard about for many years. The wheels have not fallen off completely...but there is a very big alignment problem going on here. He tries all his tricks to wheedle out of his predicament but gets nowhere. On a detour to a brothel during a fact-finding mission, he's waylaid by a bear-like Westerosi knight who plans to take him to the Queen. Mackelly and Simon wonder which queen?Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister wakes aboard the Shy Maid. His companions have pulled him from the river and are treating his extremities with vinegar to prevent greyscale infection. He must prick his extremities every few hours to check for loss of feeling.He talks to Young Griff (aka Aegon Targaryen) over a game of cyvasse. The young man shares what he's been told of his rescue. When things looked bad in King's Landing, Varys paid a tanner for his baby and smuggled the real Aegon across the Narrow Sea to Ilyrio Mopatis. Tyrion gives the young prince a few useful lessons, in particular not to expect a warm welcome from Aunty Daenerys. And to perhaps go to Dorne and lay his claim to the Iron Throne for himself. Then when they do reunite, it will be as equals.Tyrion visits Selhorys with Haldon. They learn that the Red Priests are singing Dany's praises, that she is Azor Ahai reborn. But that the nobility of the Rhoyne are very much opposed to her thwarting of the slave trade. Along the way he sees newly carved faces in the trees. Clearly the conversion to R'hllor hasn't universally landed.The new residents emerge to find that Jon can only spare starvation rations. Squabbles and arguments break out. Jon has a war horn blown to quiet the crowd.He explains that the defenders of the Wall get more rations, they need their strength. Any of the Free Folk are welcome to join. They don't have to take the Black, they don't have to kneel, but they do have to obey orders. Sixty three wildlings take up the challenge, but the Thenns resist looking at Jon with disdain. Bowen Marsh has mixed feelings about the new recruits. Mackelly and Simon reach for their goggles.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and his companions aboard the Shy Maid have reached a ruined city along the Rhoyne now called the Sorrows. A mysterious, unnatural fog surrounds the Shy Maid, unsettling its passengers. Passing ruins like the Palace of Love, Tyrion reflects on Tysha and Jaime's betrayal.A man aboard the Kingfisher, a boat traveling in the opposite direction, calls out to them. Yandry asks about news from Volantis. The man says the city will be engaged in the war by the end of the year. This bothers Griff, Illyrio Mopatis has paid one of the city's triarchs many times over for the man's support of Dany.Nearing the Bridge of Dream, Griff orders Young Griff below to avoid the dangerous stone men. When he resists, Tyrion reveals he knows Young Griff's true identity and urges him to obey. Tyrion also exposes Griff as Jon Connington, former Hand of the King and Rhaegar's friend. For his final party trick, Tyrion outs himself as Tyrion of House Lannister. Though they initially pass the bridge safely, they somehow pass beneath the bridge a second time. Mackelly and Simon fear that Stannis is not earning their loyalty.Chapter Review:Jon Snow joins Bowen Marsh to inspect winter food stores held beneath Castle Black. Despite past generosity from lords and a long summer, feeding Stannis' army and wildlings has depleted supplies. Marsh proposes winter rations early. Jon agrees, knowing it'll cause unrest.Jon later meets Stannis, Melisandre, and others in the king's solar. Stannis gifts Jon a controlled Rattleshirt as a soldier. Discussion turns to Mors Umber's terms for support. Stannis hesitates, but Jon urges acceptance, warning that rejecting Mors' terms would turn the North against him. Stannis reveals plans to take the Dreadfort, but Jon argues the Boltons will return too soon and crush Stannis' force. Pressed to arm wildlings, Jon reluctantly offers basic gear, wary of violating the Night's Watch vows. Privately, Stannis tempts Jon again with legitimization and Winterfell. Jon refuses but proposes recruiting Northern mountain clans instead. If successful, Stannis could retake Deepwood Motte and build support. Haldon has beaten Tyrion every previous game, so he eagerly accepts Tyrion's wager that the loser must share some secrets.
