Send us a textTyrion gets to know his new traveling companions, and, by dint of his cyvasse skills, some secrets about their mission. She shows signs of having given birth at some prior point, but remains an attractive woman. Ysilla makes breakfast and keeps all at bay, with the exception of Young Griff whom she plies with more than he needs.Duck spars with Young Griff, Haldon teaches him languages, geography, geometry, and history. It seems that Tyrion will contribute to this expansive education: he's been tasked with writing down all he can recall about raising and breeding dragons. Haldon offers Tyrion a game of cyvasse while Young Griff studies further with Septa Lemore. Haldon has beaten Tyrion every previous game, so he eagerly accepts Tyrion's wager that the loser must share some secrets. Tyrion hustles to victory and when a giant turtle, known as the Old Man of the River, bellows close by, Tyrion thinks that wonders often herald the arrival of kings.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister whom he recently murdered. We opened the episode with a continuation of our Villains Month coverage, diving into the more nuanced territory of morally gray characters. In this third week, we shifted from examining outright villains to exploring the blurred lines between villains and antiheroes. While often confusing, this distinction can help deepen our understanding of literary characters and narrative structure. We discussed how selfish motives and chaotic actions typically define villains, whereas antiheroes may lack traditional heroic qualities but are still driven by noble or relatable goals. What Is On Our NightstandsBefore diving into the main theme, we shared what's currently on our nightstands. Arthur has just finished Transmentation | Transcience by Darkly Lem, a multi-universe sci-fi thriller recently released by Blackstone Publishing. He's moving on to Rhino: The Rise of a Warrior by Nicholas Sainsbury Smith, which is being described as a Conan-meets-Mad-Max-style story set in the Hell Divers universe. A book review will be published soon.Meaghan, on the other hand, is juggling a few books. She's reading an advanced copy of When She Was Gone by Sarah Foster, a psychological thriller that explores family estrangement and disappearance through multiple POVs.She's also in the early chapters of Grady Hendrix's Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, which touches on the dark history of homes for “troubled” girls, wrapped in Hendrix's signature dark humor. Additionally, she's reading Scythe and Sparrow by Brynn Weaver on her subway commutes - the final installment in the Ruinous Love trilogy, known for its dark romance and black comedy. The first book, Butcher and Blackbird, is even getting a film adaptation.Defining Villains vs. AntiheroesOur main discussion centered around defining the differences between villains and antiheroes. We agreed that villains are typically characterized by outright selfishness, chaos, and harm with little to no regard for others. They oppose the protagonist and often revel in destruction or dominance.Antiheroes, in contrast, may lack traditional heroic qualities - like moral clarity, compassion, or honor - but are usually driven by a personal code or a higher, sometimes noble, purpose. Their actions might be questionable, but their motives often aim toward the greater good. For example, they may take morally ambiguous paths to achieve just ends.We used Patrick Bateman from American Psycho and Joe Goldberg from You to illustrate this line. While both offer internal justifications for their actions, we agree that their intentions and outcomes mark them more as villains than antiheroes. They may rationalize what they do, but ultimately their actions are self-serving and destructive.Another great example we discussed was Zayden from Fourth Wing. Though initially perceived as a villain by the protagonist, Violet, his motivations are revealed to be much more layered, shifting his status into antihero territory. Similar shifts occur in characters like Rhysand from ACOTAR, who is misunderstood early on but ultimately acts with benevolent intentions. The Complexity of Character Roles in Narrative StructureWe examined how literary structure, especially multiple POV storytelling, can alter our perceptions of characters. With multiple viewpoints, we often gain deeper insight into the inner motivations of a character who might otherwise appear villainous from another perspective.Meaghan made the point that antiheroes don't need to be the main character. In stories with multiple perspectives, an antihero can be a supporting or secondary character whose actions significantly impact the narrative, even if they're not the protagonist. We discussed characters like Captain Ahab from Moby Dick, Jay Gatsby, and Shakespearean figures like Macbeth and Hamlet. These figures blur the lines between heroism and villainy by embodying both admirable and damning traits. Captain Ahab is fueled by vengeance but is also driven by deeper human emotions, while Gatsby's immoral actions are motivated by love and longing. We touched on how world-building can influence a character's perceived morality. In tightly defined universes, a single action might shift a character from hero to villain or vice versa. The broader and more complex the setting, the easier it becomes to justify or criticize those actions.Modern Obsession with Antiheroes and Reader RelatabilityA recurring theme in our talk was the rising popularity of antiheroes, especially in BookTok communities and modern literature. Meaghan emphasized how modern readers are drawn to nuanced characters who reflect the gray morality of real life. Straightforward good-versus-evil narratives feel outdated to many readers who want complexity and inner conflict in their characters.Romance novels, particularly dark romance, often play with this dynamic. Characters like Zade Meadows from Haunting Adeline or those in Lights Out by Navetta Allen operate with morally questionable methods but are driven by well-intentioned motives, making them compelling and controversial at the same time.We also reflected on Joe Goldberg's character arc and how the show's clever use of internal narration makes viewers uncomfortably sympathetic toward someone who is clearly a villain. This blurring creates tension and complicates our engagement with the story, prompting us to question our moral compass.Characters like Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones were also mentioned. While initially self-serving, he evolves over the series into someone with more noble intentions, even if he doesn't fit the typical heroic mold. He shifts from a villain to a morally gray character and eventually a reluctant hero in some people's eyes.Genre Examples and Pop Culture InfluenceWe highlighted how genres like comic books and dark fantasy frequently feature antiheroes. Characters like Deadpool, Daredevil, The Punisher, and Batman exemplify this model. These characters challenge traditional morality, often operating outside the law but still striving to uphold a personal sense of justice. Meaghan noted that even characters like Geralt from The Witcher are often misclassified as antiheroes when they may just be grumpy or reluctant heroes.Arthur brought up the Murderbot Diaries as another upcoming example - an android that hacks its programming to gain autonomy while also occasionally killing humans. It's complex, emotionally resonant, and set to become an Apple TV series. We also briefly touched on Silo's Juliet, who represents a reluctant hero more than an antihero. Her role highlights how characters are shaped by the world around them and are often pulled into heroism unwillingly. We examined situations where antiheroes may shift into villain territory, such as Tamlin from ACOTAR, whose descent into darker behavior between books one and two sparked significant conversation among readers. While some hope for redemption, others see the character's trajectory as complete. Finally, we discussed how some stories allow villains or antiheroes to win. Meaghan noted that this feels more realistic because, in life, good doesn't always triumph. These narratives, while less conventional, often leave a more lasting impact on readers.Final Thoughts and What's NextWe wrapped up by affirming our shared preference for morally complex characters over one-dimensional heroes or villains. Antiheroes, with their flaws, motivations, and layered choices, make for more engaging narratives. Readers want characters that mirror real-life complexity, and antiheroes offer that depth in spades. In the closing segment, we teased our next episode, where we'll focus on different portrayals of a famously adapted villain character across books, films, and shows. We plan to compare portrayals, potentially do a ranking, and analyze how this character has changed across time and mediums. In the meantime, we encouraged listeners to check out our latest reviews and ARCs on our website, FullyBooked.ca, and subscribe to the Bookish newsletter to stay up to date with all our content.

Send us a textTyrion and Illyrio Mopatis are trapped in a closed palanquin, hidden from the world, with just each other's voices for company. Mackelly and Simon try to imagine what that must be like.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Illyrio Mopatis leave Pentos in a closed palanquin. Nobody can know of Tyrion's presence or destination. He thinks that between the sailors and Mopatis' servants the word is already out. But his host is confident of their discretion. Tyrion is doubtful. Tyrion tries to unearth Mopatis' true motivations in helping Daenerys Targaryen regain the Iron Throne. The Pentosi claims that he just wants to help the young girl he fell in love with, that he was promised a Westerosi lordship and the role of Master of Coin. None of that convinces Tyrion. They're headed east toward the Rhoyne, where Tyrion will go south by river to Volantis. There Mopatis expects he'll rendezvous with Daenerys and her growing army. Tyrion will be accompanied by a sell-sword named Griff - who (again) Mopatis places an amazing amount of faith in.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister whom he recently murdered.

This is The Fortieth Episode of the Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie.Let's talk about the dangers of being one dimensional in your character design!Below is in Automagically generated summary so you can check out the content and also to help with search functionality! ---In this video, I delve into the complexities of character design, exploring the contrast between visual representation and character development through actions. As artists, we're often taught to make characters look like who they are, emphasizing clear, exaggerated visual cues. However, in writing, it's the actions a character takes that truly define them, sometimes conflicting with their outward appearance.I discuss how these differing approaches can clash and how understanding both the external and internal aspects of character can lead to more nuanced and compelling designs. By examining examples like Tyrion Lannister from "Game of Thrones," Darth Vader from "Star Wars," and Long John Silver from "Treasure Island," I highlight how characters with contrasting appearances and motivations captivate audiences.Whether you're designing your own characters or aiming to deepen your storytelling, this video offers insights into balancing clarity with complexity. In Game of Thrones, Tyrion Lannister recounts a story to his brother Jaime about their cousin Orson, who spent his days crushing beetles with a rock. The tale is simple, yet it speaks volumes about the complexity of human behaviour, the nature of evil, and how we, as individuals, respond to it.Tyrion's contemplation about Orson's actions leads to profound philosophical questions: why do people commit seemingly meaningless acts of destruction? Why do they harm others? The metaphor of crushing beetles becomes a lens through which we examine larger truths about power, suffering, and virtue.Find this episode on:https://linktr.ee/Strongstoic The Strong Stoic Podcast is a raw, honest, and unapologetically deep podcast about philosophy and self-improvement. Mackelly and Simon join her peregrination.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth heads back to Maidenpool, no nearer finding Sansa. Ser Hyle Hunt brings the heads of Shagwell, Timeon, and Pyg with them for Lord Tarly to display on the walls of Maidenpool. He also brings back a swarm of flies. The reception in Maidenpool is no warmer than it was last time. Tarly is impressed, but unmoved, by news that Brienne dispatched the Bloody Mummers single-handedly. He reiterates his demand for her to give up her cos-play. She refuses. Tarly gives her leave to hunt the Hound, he's pillaging the environs and the frustrated lord would love to see him defeated.Ser Hyle leaves Tarly's service to travel with Brienne. She's not happy about that. He brings along a Septon Meribald who continually travels a circuit through the Riverlands, spreading the word of the Faith of the Seven, and some hard-to-get food and supplies. He talks of the plight of the young men dragged into wars and how their fall into outlawry should be considered in the light of what has happened to them. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jaime might've bitten off more than he can chew with standing vigil over his father for seven days and nights. While battling sleep, he recalls his last conversation with Rhaegar Targaryen as well as his recent one with the chief undergaoler. He's visited by Cersei and again rejects her plea to be Hand of the King. Finally, he brokers a lunch for Cersei and feeds her exact steps to success. Simon and Mackelly wonder if she'll still muck it up.Chapter Review:While Jaime Lannister stands vigil over his father's body, he thinks of how if he'd known that Tyrion was going to kill their father he'd have stopped him. He thinks of the conversation he had with the chief undergaoler of the Red Keep dungeons. He gets the same story Cersei got regarding Rugen, the missing undergaoler. Jaime is furious to learn that the turnkeys who fell asleep the night of Tyrion's escape were murdered, by order of the queen.Said queen appears in person, as Jaime stands vigil. She's dressed as a commoner to escape notice. She says Kevan refused her offer of Hand of the King and that he knows about Jaime and Cersei's relationship. She begs Jaime to reconsider taking the role of Hand of the King. Jaime again refuses. Again, in no uncertain terms. A furious Cersei stalks off after unleashing a barrage of angry words toward Jaime. When the sun comes up, mourners again flood the Great Sept of Baelor. Tywin's body has continued to decay and the odor has intensified greatly. When Queen Cersei and King Tommen approach the corpse, Tommen gags and runs for the door. Jaime goes after him and consoles the little king. Queen Cersei arrives and admonishes her son for embarrassing her. Mace Tyrell is close on her heels. Jaime sets up a lunch between Cersei and Mace, to Cersei's annoyance. But Jaime explains that it's an opportunity to send Mace on a task out of the city, where he might get himself killed.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Cersei is awakened to the news that her father is dead. She can hardly believe it, but is not exactly broken up about it. At least her little brother is locked up and will be a head short by this evening. Ah, about that: he's escaped. Mackelly and Simon spot many of Cersei's character flaws, while ignoring their own.Chapter Review:Cersei dreams of sitting the Iron Throne. It's a great dream until Tyrion appears, and her clothes disappear. Then it takes a nasty turn. She gets cut and the Iron Throne fights her. Tyrion laughs. A maid wakes her. Not to save her from the dream but because the Kingsguard are here to let her know that Tywin is dead. Cersei's struggling to separate the dream from reality. But she begins to piece it together. She dresses and is escorted to the Tower of the Hand.En route, she ponders how she should react and how she and her rivals will use her father's death to their advantage. Jamie has followed the secret passage in the fireplace, and Loras Tyrell has been sent to check on King Tommen. She sends Boros Blount to confirm that Tyrion is still secured. She wants Pycelle to prepare her father's body, but he's been and gone and not even bothered to remove the quarrel from Lord Tywin's guts.Qyburn comes in and prepares the body, and asks what's to be done with Shae. Cersei hadn't even noticed her. She wants her removed quietly, so nobody gets the idea that Tywin was consorting with a prostitute. Jamie arrives back, no sign of the murderer. She offers him the role of Hand, he refuses. Uncle Kevan demands that they stop squabbling. Blount returns with news that Tyrion is escaped. Cersei recalls a prophecy in which the Valonqar will choke the life from her.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Cersei Lannister - Queen regent and mother to King Tommen.Tywin Lannister - Lord of Casterly Rock, recently murdered by his son Tyrion.Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Cam thinks he's discovered a new type of echo that uses repetition to boil down imagery and spark revelation. It's about a civil war among noble families who are fighting for control over the iron throne that rules the lands of Westeros. Meanwhile an ancient enemy - the Night King - returns after being dormant for thousands of years. There are three major plot lines: the first is about the fight for the iron throne among the families. The second is about the rightful heir coming back to claim the throne. And the third is about the incoming winter, as seasons don't have a worldly timeline, and so the summer has lasted something like a decade. The winter also implies hard times and the threat from the North, where the wildlings and Night King live. It's based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin published in 1996. The series was created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for HBO. And it has a massive ensemble cast of over 500 characters. The show stars Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, and more. It premiered in 2011 with eight seasons that wrapped up in 2019. That year, it was HBO's most watched show and the most watched scripted show on TV, period. It had a total show budget of $1.5 Billion, and has earned $3.1 Billion through HBO subscriptions alone as of May 2019. It was filmed in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Game of Thrones: Keep your oath. And only market what you can deliver. It's when you live up to your oath that you build trust and earn brand loyalty. Ian says, “If you say you're going to do something in your marketing, you better be damn sure that sales can deliver on that, that your product can deliver on it, and that customer success is going to be there if you fall short of that. Because so often we get out way over our skis. We're pitching a product that doesn't exist yet. And that's going to make people way madder than if you just didn't promise it in the first place.” So don't break your oath like Jamie Lannister did when he killed the king. Ian says, “That follows him forever.” So keep your brand promise - or your “oath” - and deliver on what you market.Play the marketing game. Be strategic in your marketing tactics. Experiment and use what works. And don't overthink it. Small, steady successes are how you win the game. Alex says, “In demand gen sometimes you set up ads that are kind of gimmicky, and it'd be nice to do something a little bit more cerebral. But hey, you know, people like the jingle or, you know, whatever it is. And I think that there's a fair amount of pragmatism If you stick to that and you don't have this big ideology or this grand picture that you're trying to fill the pieces on. You just keep on stringing together successes of what works even if they're very moderate and small scale. Everything is a stepwise function, and you build your way up pretty high, just like Bronn does in the show.”If you have dragons, use them. Don't chain them up. Alex says that especially if you're a startup, you need all the help you can get getting your brand off the ground. He says, “If you have any kind of secret weapon, you better use it. And you're probably going to want to use it pretty early on. You're not going to want to sit on it.” So call up your old classmates who are well connected. Leverage the talents and skills of your employees to make something great. For Alex, he said his secret weapon was that “I understood the persona we were selling to super well. And everything that went out the door was uniquely tailored to what a technical person would react well to. And the stats at the other end just kind of pop off the charts.”Quotes*”Being good at growth marketing is being scrappy. Trying things out, not being afraid to lean into something even if it is a little bit hacky if it works. Never overstepping your bounds, and understanding that the world works a certain way.” - Alex RosemblatTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Alex Rosemblat, CMO at Datadog[2:32] What is Datadog? Podrik Payne cannot vouch for Tyrion's innocence, which suggests that few will. The last witness is a surprise: Shae. Of course Cersei would have interviewed, and coerced, Sansa's handmaids. But Shae is not only going to lie for Cersei, she's also going to tell the truth. Tyrion and Sansa plotted the murder and Tyrion used her sexually and forced her to refer to him as “her giant of Lannister.” The crowd's laughter is too much for Tyrion and he demands the trial by combat.Cerseis is thrilled to announce that the Mountain Gregor Clegane will fight for her, but the whole room is stunned when Oberyn Martell offers to champion Tyrion's cause. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion stands trial for the murder of the king. The prosecution has no end of witnesses, while Tyrion has none. But at the 11th hour a glimmer of hope appears. Mackelly and Simon weigh the scales of justice.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister languishes for days in a Red Keep tower cell. He's well-treated and fed as befits his station, but the crime of which he's accused holds only one possible punishment. He's getting advice and daily visits from his uncle Kevan, but neither of them is very optimistic of his chances. Cersei is amassing a deluge of witnesses to testify against him. Tyrion pins his hopes on trial by combat, but knowing that the opponent will be Gregor Clegane, Bronn demurs. The trial, before a three-judge panel of Tywin, Mace Tyrell, and Oberyn Martell, goes very badly for Tyrion. The witnesses either exaggerate, downright lie, or in the case of Varys: accurately report Tyrion's various threats and comments on the dead king. Kevan advises confession and the Night's Watch, but Tyrion doesn't trust his father's mercy. On the final night of the trial, Tyrion is visited in his cell by Oberyn. He's not necessarily there to reassure Tyrion, but knowing that he's doomed he's hoping to get the truth about his sister's death. Tyrion confirms some suspicions: while it was the now dead Lorch who dispatched Princess Rhaenys, it was The Mountain who raped and murdered Elia and killed baby Aegon. But Tyrion denies that Tywin ordered the deaths. Oberyn throws Tyrion a lifeline. He'll be his champion in trial by combat against Clegane.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. It's Week #3 of Patreon Request Month 2023, and the randomizer is going all the way back to 2007 to pick Jinx Productions and Jonathan Librach's request for the long-awaited (though I'm not sure by who) live action feature film adaptation of a 1960s animated series that millions of people watched in reruns while enthusiastically cheering "okay, I guess this exists!" And the movie boldly exists as well, transforming the uniquely-designed clothed bipedal dog-like characters in the cartoon into boring ordinary dogs, replacing Wally Cox's cartoony voice with the snarky rasp of the guy from Mallrats, and casting Tyrion Lannister and Kronk as the bad guys and unfairly expecting them to carry the whole damn movie when they don't really seem to feel like doing that. Also Joliet Jake's far-less-talented brother shows up to collect a paycheck. No, not Elwood, the other one.
