The HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms may be set in the same fantasy world as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, but it's a small, grounded story – a kind of medieval buddy comedy. It follows a sweet but dim knight (Peter Claffey) and his wise-beyond-his-years young squire (Dexter Sol Ansell) trying to make their way in a tough world. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on a series of novellas by George R.R. Martin.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhourLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

I start the episode riding high off a homemade sandwich and the confidence only Martin's BBQ chips can give a man. From there, I immediately make a series of adult financial decisions I should not be allowed to make. I lock down a signed Jake Paul Pop Century card, talk myself into wearing it as a necklace, and openly admit I need my phone taken away before Facebook Marketplace and TikTok live sales ruin my life. This is what happens when you give someone adult money and internet access. Then we get into the storm. The storm of the century. The storm with a PR team. Winter Storm Fern. According to the internet, Pennsylvania is getting anywhere from one inch to ninety eight inches of snow, trees are exploding in Canada, and grocery stores are out of everything except Dasani. I break down the panic, the fake urgency, and the group hysteria while delivering the only six winter survival tips you will ever need. These tips are foolproof, medically questionable, and absolutely not approved by anyone with credentials. From there, we spiral into Soulja Boy's fashion empire, influencer politicians, and the idea of Farrah Abraham becoming the mayor of Texas. I question who is buying Soulja Boy shoes with his face on them, wonder how much money it would take to ruin my public reputation with a full outfit, and seriously consider a future where podcasts replace government. None of this feels fake anymore and that part is concerning.I wrap things up with a rapid fire run through Mission Impossible logic, why the mission is always possible, why the bad guy is usually HR, and why face masks solve every problem. I also shout out the return of Recap and Record with Los, where we are breaking down HBO's The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms every week. New episodes. New chaos. Same energy.Hit play. Hit subscribe. Post your snow pictures.Episode 220 is live.
Men bare rolig. Med venlig hilsen, Jannik & Casper Premieredatoer (fundet via Kino.dk, Grand Teatret & HBO/Max) I biografen: 15. januar: 'Begyndelser' (Dansk premiere) 15. januar: 'Rental Family' 15. januar: '28 Years Later - The Bone Temple' (Rammer biograferne ugen efter forgængeren) 15. januar: 'No Other Choice' (Park Chan-wook) 22. januar: 'Nouvelle Vague' (Vises bl.a. i Grand Teatret) 29. januar: 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' 29. januar: 'Die My Love' 5. februar: 'The Secret Agent' (Dansk biografpremiere) Streaming: 8. januar: 'The Pitt' (Sæson 2 på Max) 18. januar: 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' (Premiere på Max)

This week, our Gabfest panel includes Steve and guest hosts Nadira Goffe and Laura Miller with a typically eclectic collection of topics. First up, Dana hops on the call to decode the unspoken truths and dream imagery of Kleber Mendonça Filho's film The Secret Agent. Set in 1970s Recife, Brazil and starring a very charming Wagner Moura, the film is a heterodox brew of political thriller, magical realism, and attentive character study about the everyday surreality of life under dictatorship.Next, it's back to Westeros with a discussion of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones prequel set 100 years before the original show based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy epic. Grounded and surprisingly funny, don't expect dragons in this knight's tale. Finally, they turn to “Gluttons for Punishment,” a recent Vulture article by Lila Shapiro about UPenn religious studies professor Justin McDaniel using some extreme, unorthodox measures to get his students to finish books. In an exclusive bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the panel talks to Laura about the secret pleasures of wood stacking as discussed in her recent piece “The Art of the Holzhausen.”EndorsementsNadira: Some melancholy shoegaze pop from Scandinavia, specifically the albums Goodbyehouse by Snuggle and Big City Life by Smerz.Laura: The novels of Robert Jackson Bennett in his Shadow of the Leviathan series including Hugo-winning The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption.Steve: The Substack essay “The Wall Looks Permanent Until It Falls Down” by Adam Bonica about the cost of American exceptionalism. And a bonus one from Dana: Pictures of Ghosts, the documentary by The Secret Agent director Kleber Mendonça Filho about Recife, Brazil in the 1970s.--Email us your thoughts at culturefest@slate.com. Reposted from Dragon ‘Cast, which you can find and subscribe to at: podcastica.com/podcast/dragon-cast — Dragon 'Cast returns to Westeros with the premiere of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, exploring a quieter, more personal corner of George R. R. Martin's world. In this episode, Rennie, Veronica, and Wendy cover “The Hedge Knight,” discussing the introduction of Dunk and Egg, the meaning of knighthood beyond titles, and how this series shifts the focus away from dragons and thrones toward character, honor, and moral choice. They examine the tone of the show, the world it establishes, and how it compares to earlier Westeros stories. As always, Dragon 'Cast delivers thoughtful analysis, adaptation discussion, and thematic exploration as the journey begins. Next up: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S1E2 “Hard Salt Beef”. It's the series premiere! Once you've seen it, we'd love know your thoughts! You can email or send a voice message to dragons@podcastica.com.
