Another week has passed and here we are in the same situation as the previous as well as what seems to be the foreseeable future. Many of us are coping, others are struggling with not being able to live their social lives that they are accustomed to but we’re all in the same boat in trying to survive. DJ, Producer, burger connoisseur and a collector of all things fresh, Skeme Richards started DJing in 1981. He stops by the podcast to drop knowledge on Philly, the Second City of Hip Hop... and how he is coping with staying inside with the pressure to stay creative. As we all stay indoors, I try my best to follow Skeme Richards across the vocal map and see the world through the eyes of his lens. From films to amazing cultural sites and under the radar gems that are only in the know by locals and residents. Enjoy! Howdy gang, it's been a few weeks, but we're back in the saddle, and here to present you with the first of a two part special, on Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. On this episode, Hunter and John (no Stu, he's on the upcoming Part 2) are joined by DJ extraordinaire, friend of the show, Martial Arts aficionado, Nostalgia King, and all around good guy Skeme Richards. Sit back, listen, enjoy and look out for Part 2, coming very soon.
Skeme Richards is one of Phillys greatest sons! Amongst a million other things, he is a member of the legendary Rock Steady Crew, a global DJ, cultural ambassador, burger connoisseur, and preserver of culture. Having started Djing in the earliest days of "hip-hop," Skeme, has nearly 40 years of experiences and observations as an active participant. Known as the "Nostalgia King," hes taken note of the dynamic shifts and changes within emceeing, djing, graffiti, and breaking; as well as their relationships to various subcultures through the lense of a life long Philadelphia resident that is still rocking parties around the world. Were big fans of Skemes website, nostalgiaking.com, which documents of his global journeys but it was an honor to sit down with the King himself to kick off the Reiwa era. We could have sat down with skeme for a week and barely broke the surface of his experiences, so we kept this episode long for yall. Also we had the folks Average Guy Named Ran come through to take some photos and video. So be prepared for that. Check it out, expeditiously. This week on Episode #6, we have a special treat for you FleaMarket Funk readers and radio listeners out there. We were joined by The Nostalgia King, Soul Brother #1, Butta Brother and Hot Peas and Butta founder Skeme Richards as well a drummer Soki Kimura from Osaka Monaurail. They both stopped by the studio after we took them record digging and out for some burgers here in Jersey City. During the course of the show we play some funky stuff from around the globe, talk the 45 game, reissuing records, choice hamburgers, shady promoters, staying in our own lane, and more. We also talk to drummer Soki Kimura from Tokyo, Japan about his involvement in Osaka Monaurail, his influences, and his touring time with the great Marva Whitney. After our interview (which took place in a raging snowstorm!), Skeme gets down to business and laces us with a 35 minute mix of funky records of all sorts, mostly from Japan and abroad. Needless to say, there is no track list, so like the old days, you'll have to search for these titles. We were honored to have both in the studio, and hope you enjoy this as much as we did! Skeme Richards once told me that he’s not afraid of a real job. He’s not afraid of rolling up his sleeves and departing the DJ life that takes to him places like Germany, Switzerland, Amsterdam and Tokyo year round. He wouldn’t be upset about not being able to shop in all the best record stores […]
