MEI Senior Fellow Mohammed Soliman joins hosts Alistair Taylor and Matthew Czekaj to discuss his new book, West Asia: A New American Grand Strategy in the Middle East. The book argues that it is time for the United States to move decisively away from nation-building and focus instead on order-building, outlining a framework for a new regional order that links Europe to the Indo-Pacific. Soliman also shares how he conceived of the core ideas behind his book and explains why his thesis is especially relevant in today's geopolitical, economic, and technological landscape. In today's episode, East-German born, New York based artist, Cornelia Thomsen shares her story of finding her way into becoming an artist. She gives insights into her socialistic upbringing in a small village near Dresden, and how she managed to get accepted to be trained as a porcelain painter at famous Meissen Porcelain Manufactory.Cornelia (a humble powerhouse!) shares how she had believed that the world she lived in would be it, until the Fall of the Berlin Wall, when she stormed into the big world and embraced it. Her worldview became liberated by the discovery of abstract art.Cornelia talks about resilience being her super power, and how she persistently worked as an artists, went to art school near Frankfurt (with two small children at home), moved to New York and started a gallery together with her husband (and meanwhile 3 children). Cornelia and I have known each other for almost 20 years, sharing experiences and emotions, raising children in Manhattan - an East German and a West German united on neutral grounds. Her work has been shown internationally, and is in collections of world renowned museums like LACMA in LA, museum of fine arts in Houston, the Parrasch Art Museum in Watermill, New York and others.AND: In August, just briefly after recording this episode, her newest series of works, the complete sets of Golden Ratio Series have been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.#### On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS' Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas. WA sheep farmers do things "bloody well" if you ask Fraser Stewart, which is why he wrestled the 2025 Rabo WA Sheep & Wool tour to the west side of the country. Fraser was proud to see curiosity and ideas bounce between the 21 big industry players visiting from the Eastern States and New Zealand to WA's Great Southern region last month. WA is a key restocking market nationally, but Fraser wanted to show the impressive adaptations farmers are making to the phase out of the live export trade, and some of the on-farm strategies to maximise production systems in a drying climate. It's impossible to get a full picture of a country as big and diverse as Canada, but audio journalist Kasia Mychajlowycz set out on a road trip to find as many people as she could to ask: what's the most important issue to you in this election season, and why? What people answered ranged through topics like affordability, healthcare, trust in government, reconciliation, tariffs and more. But in over 35 interviews in a dozen places over seven provinces, people went beyond politics, retelling the joys, challenges and tragedies that make up all our lives. In The Fate of the Jews in the Early Islamic Near East: Tracing the Demographic Shift from East to West (Cambridge UP, 2022), Phillip Lieberman revisits one of the foundational narratives of medieval Jewish history--that the rise of Islam led the Jews of Babylonia, the largest Jewish community prior to the rise of Islam, to abandon a livelihood based on agriculture and move into urban crafts and long-distance trade. Here, he presents an alternative account that reveals the complexity of interfaith relations in early Islam. Using Jewish and Islamic chronicles, legal materials, and the rich documentary evidence of the Cairo Geniza, Lieberman demonstrates that Jews initially remained on the rural periphery after the Islamic conquest of Iraq. Gradually, they assimilated to an emerging Islamicate identity as the new religion took shape, sapping towns and villages of their strength. Simultaneously, a small, elite group of merchants and communal leaders migrated westward. Lieberman here explores their formative influence on the Jewish communities of the southern Mediterranean that flourished under Islamic conquest. Learn more about your ad choices. “I was told I didn't matter, that my only value was in being a good wife and “Achi-Bachi.” But I refused to accept that. I broke free from centuries-old cultural conditioning and trauma and created a new path – the Jamali Method. Jamali is a mission and movement to bring freedom and purpose to Muslim women around the globe; to empower them to break free of the chains of societal and cultural oppression, and step into leadership – for their family, community, and businesses.”Meet Eram Saaed, the world's #1 coach for Professional Muslim women, a catalyst for change, empowerment, abundance and connection bridged by Islamic principles with modern leadership.Born in Pakistan, she was raised in a culture where women's voices don't matter and are expected to be silent and submissive. After two failed marriages, physical and emotional abuse, and being financially bankrupt, Eram hit rock bottom. It was then, in her darkest hour, she discovered the infinite wisdom of Allah and developed a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand approach that has transformed her into a global leader. Today, Eram is trusted by and has impacted over 23 million Muslim women worldwide, empowering them to balance faith and freedom. With her daughter Natasha by her side, they offer guidance, tools, accountability, and support to help them achieve clarity, purpose, courage, dignity, self-love, justice, abundance, and freedom bridged with faith.Welcome to the movement.Abundance creates peace. The Jamali Method focuses on three foundations: Jamali Freedom helps you find clarity, confidence and independence regardless of past obstacles and adversity. Jamali Purpose helps you find your passion and purpose based on what your gifts are, even if you can't see it clearly for yourself at first. Jamali Leadership provides the tools and blueprint you need to be 100% committed to your mission, in balance with faith, to reinvent and restart. And there are five more essential insights in this episode that EVERY entrepreneur can benefit from, whether or not you're a man, woman or Muslim woman. KEY TAKEAWAYSEram was raised Muslim in a conservative and religious family and faced significant challenges, including gender inequality and societal injustices. Her first and second marriages were abusive, but the turning point came when she resolved to protect her daughter and build a better life.Without a college degree, Eram started at Chase Manhattan Mortgage and rose to become the highest-producing loan officer in her branch. She made $22,500 in one month - which laid the foundation for her Jamalis of financial independence, self-confidence and leadership. A sabbatical in Pakistan led to viral videos that catapulted her into global recognition, where she gained 100 million views in 60 days during a personal crisisShe then built the first version of the Jamali Love program upon identifying a major need. The Jamali Method includes three transformative programs: Jamali Freedom, Jamali Purpose, and Jamali Leadership.Eram's focus has been on building financial independence and purposeful living.
